To coincide with the stunning pictures of Jake Gyllenhaal at the Los Angeles Rendition press conference that I Heart Jake have so kindly posted for us today, here is a video interview that Jake conducted on the same day for a French broadcaster. In addition to Jake looking sensational, albeit hairy, he also gets to speak a little bit of French - adding to our collection of Jake talking in foreign tongues (one of these days he'll do cockney, surely?). Click on these pictures and they shall be large and beautiful.
Jake is asked about the name of his character in Rendition (Douglas Freeman) and if he had to do some sort of psychological preparation to do the part. 'Mostly it was trying to hold as much as I could back. I think performances are always considered performances when there's a lot of emotion, when they're emoting. Emotions are complicated in that holding them back is what we usually tend to do. And this character in particular is not free - I mean that's his last name - he can't show his emotions so I found that the most interesting part of the character... There's just a struggle to protect, keep a game-face - it was like playing poker everyday!'
On the possible dangers of being in Morocco. 'I think before I went there I was concerned about safety, just because I had never been there before and didn't know. But there was never once a concern while I was there. It's kind of amazing actually how open and loving and giving everybody in Marrakesh and Morocco - we shot mostly in Marrakesh but we also shot around Morocco - how wonderful they all were. I mean they were - that culture in particular - any sort of scepticism or paranoia on my part was kind of obliterated by their kindness. Not to choose a word that you use with acts of bombing, but it really was. Their kindness obliterated that American kind of paranoia that I have.'
The interviewer quotes Jake who once said that we live in a sad world where politicians are actors and actors are politicians and asks if Jake believes that actors can't make a political statement. 'No, I just think the job of acting - the irony that most people think the job of acting and I think most actors believe that acting is an act - it is dishonest somewhere. I guess what I was trying to say is that it's a sad time when everybody doesn't get to be honest. It's a sad time when everybody is afraid to be honest and to actually look into themselves and ask themselves what they actually believe.'
'And I feel like I, most of the time, I feel that an actor is a member of the human race and should be able to say what they feel about things and I feel like politicians should be also able to say the truth and not have to worry about what everybody thinks - that they're not, that they're going to lose their vote. And the irony of all that, I think that if everybody did do that, everybody would be a lot calmer [laughs] or more peaceful and there would be better movies made [laughs].'
As for the press conference itself, you can find out more about that and what Jake had to say here.

I need to start cooking dinner in a minute.... just want to come in and say thank you!
I listened to your advice and click to enlarge those pictures.... I just want to say, it should be a crime for a man to be so beautiful and charming.
Can't wait to watch Rendition again on DVD!
Hi Winterbird - these pictures are just incredible - I spent so long staring at them this evening. I'm really looking forward to my Rendition DVD arriving - counting down... Good to see you and have a good dinner - mine's burning nicely at the moment ;)
Hi Herman
Thanks for your comment - I moved it to the previous thread because that's where Paul's question was. For articles, please could you post links and/or brief summaries to avoid causing trouble for those looking at the site with phones/dial up - thanks :)
And he's speaking French...Can he BE any more adorable? No.
Bon soir, Anon - inclined to agree with you :D
Oh Mon Dieu!! J'adore son accent!! Took me about 5 goes before I could watch the interview without rewinding to the beginning (I have a feeling the DVD will suffer a similar fate;). Lovely pics too, albeit as you say, way too much face fuzz going on but hopefully that should be history now that Brothers is finished. But his eyes just shine in those pics. I love the third one, the look on his face is priceless! All being well we should have our hands on the DVD this time next week:D
Bon jour TL! So I'm not the only one who played te beginning over and over - actually, I blame the video not me... Jake 's eyes are stunning in these pictures, simply stunning. Counting the days til I get my mits on that DVD and maybe one day I'll get beyond Jake's opening scene :D
What are the interviewer's second question and Jake's answer? I mean, can someone write it and translate it ,please? Is it:"How are you?" "I'm fine."? Please forgive me my absolute lack of knowledge of French.
Hi anon - No worries :D yep the interview says Bon jour Jake (Good day, Jake), so Jake replies and then the interviewer says 'comment ca va?' which just means, as you say, How are you. Jake's reply 'Ca va bien' just means, I'm well (things are going well). :)
^^^ I like how Jake says it though!
Hey WDW! I would love to blame the video (and let's face it, how many times have they NOT worked for me!) but I can't lie, I just can't resist listening to Jake speaking French. I'm so glad I paid attention in french class all those years ago, it was one of the few subjects I was any good at. I've forgotten most of it now though:(
I can't wait to get the DVD either, let's hope playusa live up to their usual high standards. I'm hoping Jake will be in at least some of the deleted scnes - he has to be, surely! A shirtless deleted scene would be the icing on the cake:D
Id like to put together some Jake snips, "Hey this is Jake Gyllenhaal," from Zodiac commentary, "Ca va bien," etc., and then a few choice action scenes, you know which ones I mean. . .
Jake is indeed ah!doable - I mean, adorable, in this video. He does veer off into gyllenbabble when he speaks of acting, but when he does this he often seems to catch hmself, and laugh at himself.
thank you as always for keeping the faith WDW!
Salut TL! - at first I really did think - 'and I am naive of course' - that it was the player messing up for you! Then I realised... ;) I like it when Jake sticks with French and German as I know some of those!
I'm counting on all of the Rendition deleted scenes featuring Jake in a state of undress... non?
Cher Pia! I'd like you to go ahead with that project as it sounds good. Choice action scenes - I'm coming back to my top 10 Action Jake list again.
In this interview I did have a chuckle when Jake says that the Moroccans 'obliterated' his paranoia with their kindness and says that he's not choosing words associated with bombing when he so deliberately is! Definitely tongue in cheek. And captivating. Thanks for being here, Pia, m'amie :D
Hi all from a very wet and rainy day here...
Jake speaking French...YES PLEASE!! ;p Once again WDW you spoil us with gems like this. Jake seems to take his time with what he wants to say. Nice interview and Jake looks stunning indeed. Can't wait for the Rendition DVD! Also seems Jake was at a Rufus concert. :)
Hi Get Real - feels like winter's back again - not good as the daffodils are coming out here.
Glad you liked the interview - absolutely delicious :D
I saw that about Jake seeing Rufus last night in LA - I love Jake and Rufus so that made me happy indeed to hear Jake was out wnjoying the show!
Jake was at Rufus concert? When? Any links? Thanks
Mais oui, WDW, Jake sans vetements - parfait!Btw, when did Jake speak German? I don't remember that...My preference,as you know, would be Jake speaking Italian (I'm hearing Bananarama in my head now!) or Spanish - I can taech him the latter if he doesn't know how;) Oh, and I have to add "obliterated" to my list of Random Words I Love To Hear Jake Say :D
How about "smoooch" from the GLAD awards?
Hi Anon - here's the 'link' - well URL anyway ;) One of these days I'll learn - if anyone wants to give me a lesson...

'VOCAL YOKELS: Jake Gyllenhaal and a couple of buddies, hitting the Rufus Wainwright concert at the Wiltern theater in L.A.' This was last night.
TL - you are such a Polyglot! I take off my chapeau to vous :) I've never heard Jake speak German - this is just wishful thinking on my part along with hearing him speak like a cockney - or a Brit at least. Or a Scot or an Irishman. Like the Bananarama ref btw ;)
Also like that you have a list of Jake words - 'smooch' is still my favourite.
PIA!!!! - that is so spooky!!!! I'm freaked out now! That's my favourite - I need a lie down or a whiskey or both...
Oh yeah, "smooch" is definitely another favourite of mine, spooky twins, Pia and WDW. And "mascara" and "erotic" and "Malaga" and the bad guy in Highway;D Oh, and I can teach Jake cockney too, if he needs me to;D An Irish accent would have me passed out on the floor though!
Yep, like 'mascara' - as he said it the English way which sounded rather adorable - when did he say Malaga? I think you told me once but I've forgotten (blame the booze). I remember Jake saying 'horrible' in an interview once and it sounded a bit odd - liked that too. But I suppose la piece de resistence was in that Jarhead interview I put on the site in which he said Jarhead was like really good sex without the orgasm. I quite liked that, don't know why...
Jake says "Malaga" in Rendition:) And yes, that Jarhead interview is a classic*swoon*
Forgot to say before, to do a direct link, you just need to type
(a href=http://www.eonline.com/gossip/planetgossip/detail/index.jsp?uuid=deb7616b-770b-4597-bc2c-64e7009ad9b5) Jake at Rufus concert(/a)
but using < > instead of ( )
Jake at Rufus concert
Merci beaucoup, TL! Now all I need to do is remember that... ;)
Oh yes, I remember the Malaga comment now, right at the end of Rendition. Great scene :D
Pas de quoi, ma chere:) Damn, I can't wait to see the DVD again. I just know that's there's so many things that I missed in the cinema, not to mention the extras. And of course THAT scene is worth the price on its own;D
I like the way he says "the Seventies".
Am chuffed he likes obliterated since I used that word in an e-mail to you and Rubes today, WDW. Think I was exaggerating a little, too.
TL, question is, do we know Jake well enough to tutoyer him? :)
Not too long to wait now TL, but I worry that when it arrives through your letter box we may never see you again as you'll be rewinding and rewinding, all day long :)
Hey Anouska. Obliterated is a good word. I liked it when Jake said 'couscous' in such an odd way on the JR show too :D I'm not quite certain what 'tutoyer' means, but I know I want to do it.
Kinda figuring the Canary Islands might be a pleasant place to tutor Jake. Im fond of the word "tutor". . . sounds kinda like smooootch. no, not really. nevertheless!
I think tutoyer means to use the familiar tu or toi, as opposed to vous, but I'm not 100% sure. If I'm right, well we'll just have to ask, won't we? Wouldn't want to be disrespectful now, would we? You've got me singing that Lady Marmalade song now!:D
Yes, that's it TL. Always thought it was odd that they vous'd on that song ... :-/
:D Tutor is lovely too, Pia :)
cooz cooz wasn't it WDW :D :D
Nite all *
Pia, I think I'd happily tutor Jake anywhere but the Canary Islands do have a pleasant climate :)
TL, I love that song. And yes that's weird they would want to couchez avec moi with a vous.
Anouska, yep, it was cooos cooos. Ah sigh. I love how Jake makes cooking sound :D
Bon nuit *
Hey Anouska! I always thought it was weird about the vous in that song too, but hey, who cares as long as Jake says "Oui!":D
All this francais is making me think of the Happy Birthday Cannes video :)
It's making me think of Cannes Jake, that's for sure! Hoping for some doux reves tonight;) Bonne nuit xx
Bonne nuit, TL! See you tomorrow xx
I guess what struck me today was Jake's play on his Rendition character's name. (Not that I don't admire his eyes too). Douglas was not a Free-man... But Jake's interviews, posted by WDW this past couple days, help us to understand what a free man is. A free man is one who is "courageous enough to talk about his feelings"--courageous enough to explore "the sensitivity side of maleness." A free man is also open to the customs and kindness of other cultures.
And I like the idea that Jake is getting that definition out there.
--Kim
(Sorry WDW I tried every choice with blogger but anon was the only one that worked...)
I enjoyed the interview... Jake speaking French... very sweet :)
I just read an interview with Doug Liman, he's promoting "Jumper", he briefly mentioned the moon project at the end:
UGO: What can you tell me about your upcoming moon colonization project?
DL: It's with Jake Gyllenhaal. We're still in development on it. It's a script I wrote about ten years ago. I think the greatest accomplishment in our lifetime really was the Apollo program. And rather than just tell a history of the first lunar landing, I want to make it relevant to a young audience by having the group today recreate what the Apollo program did forty years ago.
I can't say I am 100% ecstatic about the moon project, because Liman did make "Mr & Mrs Smith" and that totally s.... sorry :( but of course, he made the first Bourne franchise. And the moon project story seems interesting.
Kim! Hi! The Name/URL one should work...? Good to hear from you. This was the first time I'd heard Jake talk about the name of Douglas. Jake is most definitely that Free-man - able to talk of his feelings.
That's a great interview, Winterbird. Thanks :D Sounds like the Moon project is still some time off - interesting that jake should have committed to it at such an early stage - as he did with the Namath project of course. Seems all the more likely that Nailed is next.
Jake speaking French had made me all weak in the knees.
Those photos are absolutely breathtaking. His eyes alone are enough to send me over the edge.
I am so excited about the Rendition DVD next week. I have been thinking about it all day. I might wear my copy out at the beginning. I still remember seeing it for the first time at the theater. Out loud I said "Oh my God". I think my boyfriend wanted to crawl under the seat. :)
Morning everyone - These pictures look just as good this morning :D
Hi Bird Girl. I remember when I first saw that scene at TIFF I think I lost some breaths and missed some heartbeats, and I couldn't help thinking Jake was in the theatre and wondering what he thought. I can't wait for the DVD, I may even watch the rest of it as well ;)
G'morning, y'all! A little howlin of wind outside my door, twenty degrees and folks still struggling to clear the walks of heavy wet icey snow. I miss the laconic Perth weather reports. CF: "fine". Seems to me "fine" or "chancey" might just do.
Since y'all aren't my psyciatrist I dont know why I bother you with me dreams but I am fascinated how I continue to be tangled up in Heath - dreamed last night I was five women come to pay him tribute.
I guess H was a lovely lover with those long legs, or maybe it was all that time a-horseback.
I would not mind for all of this to be over, esp since I am a one man woman, m'self. Maybe after the Oscars.
Hope all are warm and safe, esp. in N'east USA today.
Morning Pia - what a dream! And not long to those Oscars now. Look after yourself in that chill and slush.
psychiatrist that mispelling lookd really ugly
On this S:t Valentine's day I give all the females on this blog a link to the most thrilling story with wonderful pictures about

Bonjour mes amis,et Joyeux Jour de Saint Valentine. Like you TL, I left school (30 years ago this year,OMG!) pretty fluent in French, but time and lack of use has robbed me of much of it. A shame, but it doesn't stop me getting the message when Jake speaks French! Sacre bleu!
Before I get back to Jake,I wonder, could it be that they don't tutoyer in "Lady Marmalade" because they are meant to be ladies of the night (ahem!)trying to reel in a punter and are thus saying "voulez-vous couchez avec moi,ce soir?" - just a theory.
Loved the video of the interview,WDW,the last two posts have been littered with wonderfully deep,insightful,make-him-sexier-than-ever comments from Monsieur Gyllenhaal.
On the "totally random words said by Jake that drive me wild front" for some reason I get the shivers when,as in this interview, he says "work". When in "Rendition" he says "It's not working" I am putty in his hands (if only!).
It's us doing the spooky twins bit again actually TL,cos, though Jake adopting any accent is very alluring, it would be Jake doing an Irish accent which would completely pop my cork! What a heavenly thought.
Talking of heavenly, the set of photos in this post are just glorious, particularly embiggened (I even find the fact that this highlights a few enlarged pores in his complexion sort of human and endearing - am I going slightly mad?!).
I also couldn't get it out of my head that these photos, with Jake looking so upbeat, animated and gorgeous (in spite of the face fungus)that these were taken pre Jan 22nd 2008. It's like the whole world shifted on its axis that day, especially Jake-world. To pick up on what Pia said in the last beautifully-Brokie post,I don't think Jake has ever really left the Mountain behind either...and I don't know if you're right about Heath's death closing that chapter Pia. Jake may make other films, move on in life, hopefully happily and successfully, but deep down I think that ol'"Brokeback's got him good for all time. but what do I know...?
Despite the fact that Heath and Jake have been the only thing on my mind lately, when not screwed up by real-life events, sadly I've yet to have any sleeping dreams about them, happy or sad. I love Pia's dream where Heath's lovely long legs feature so prominently...and then I remember a young man stepping down from the cab of a truck, turning away, pulling on his jacket, lovely long legs in those gorgeous blue jeans and...sorry folks, think I'd better shut up now and think of happier things....
((((Everyone)))
(((Pia))) We may not be your psychiatrist but you can bet your last tin of beans we understand better than any psychiatrist could ever hope to. It willl get better hun, it just takes time and there will be ups and downs. I've been feeling a lot better myself the last couple of days but I had a wobbly moment this morning when Kirsty MacColl's "Days" came on my MP3:(
I had a weird dream myself last night, nothing to do with Heath or Jake, just two random cute guys I was playing Cupid for(it worked btw, very slashy!;D)
Hey Nadine! Good to see you:) You're probably right about Lady Marmalade actually, which blows a hole in my theory that occured to me last night as I was drifting off to sleep, that maybe it wasn't meant as the formal "vous" but the plural - hence my slashy dreams. Or more likely, that's just my filthy mind. I'll shut up about this now...
I know what you mean about Brokeback getting Jake good. Look how it got us, and we just watched from the outside. Then again, Jake probably has the ability to keep a professional distance from it, unlike us. I dunno...But I think there's a little part of him that will forever be Jack Twist up on the mountain.
(WDW) (TL) (Nadine) - welcome hugs from you guys and back attcha!
I agree that BBMt got Jake good, being, as he is, a man full of feeling and able to express these which is one reason he is such a glorious trip.
It is so good, WDW, to be able to play on this site, without judgement, play, being, for me, an aspect of FEELING - and that's what BBMt is all about.
Also not to feel like an idiot speaking of dreams - and H'wood is of course, our "dream factory", that speaks in this same language -
Im sure there will be acknowledgement of Heath's work at Oscars ceremony and hope UTUBE will be posted for those of us who dont have TV. Yhsnks TL for reminding me that there will continue to be ups and downa and lots of emotion. Nadine, I esp love the video from Ten Things I hate About You - with Heath's long legs featured as well as that astonishing smile.
Jake, from his own words, came to love Heath during the making of this film. Im not talking of romantic love, in this instance. Nor was he.
Rendition arrives soon. I may faint. However, I'll be in my own bed, not among strangers at the Multiplex. Ordered Philip Glass's renditin of Leonard Cohen poems along with it, I may double faint.
In the meantime, Im realizing that Has Elroy, in the Zodiac commentary, was not speaking of Mark Ruffalo but himself, who was "hung like a mule". TMI, Jimmy. Macho writers annoy me. I would have liked to hear more from Jake and Robt.
Hi everyone - made it back home after 3 hours :(
Good to see you Nadine *) Don't worry, you're not alone in finding nothing wrong with Jake's enlarged pores ;) I rather like the face fungus in these pics though - yep, I've said it :D
And you and TL - listen to you with all your vousing and tuing. I just assumed in Lady Marmalade it was vous cos they hadn't got round to doing anything yet :)
I've had some wobbly moments myself, the last couple of days, and the majority ofthem have been around the BBM soundtrack. I intend to watch the film tonight and spend some quiet tim with it (when I'm not chatting with you all that is...).
(((Pia))) - Play away - this site is all about unwinding and finding some peace and expressing that feeling - the BBM lesson indeed.
I can't wait for the Rendition DVD - won't be long now. Thanks for sorting out the 'hung like a mule' comment ;) I was sure that wasn't Ruffalo! (Not that I'm insinuating anything about Mark you understand ;) )
When I read everyone else's comments here, I thought someone mentioned that Jake was in the audience at a Rufus Wainwright concert this week. When I tried to go back and read it in detail, I couldn't find the reference. :-(
Two separate people in a Rufus Wainwright blog alluded to Jake being there. One said that he (Jake) was dancing and singing along to one of Rufus's songs about 12 rows back. The other scolded Rufus for telling a joke about Heath Ledger, and was concerned that Jake "Blumenthal" might have been offended. :-)
I LMAO'd at that.
Two sightings are more credible than just one, and if this was true, then Jake seems to be healing.
I hope I haven't offended anyone by posting this. I seem to have been born without an essential gene that warns me of trouble ahead. :-(
so Im offended.
I really dont want to hear half-assed reports with intimations of disrespect and anti-semitism - it is difficuilt enough to deal with this tragedy without this stuff.
come on, Paul. any time you gotta aplogize ahead of time something's off. if you know yourself to be a trouble monger, self-monitor, man!
just sayin' honestly!
Dear oh dear oh dear... :(
Paul, if you knew that what you were going to say would offend, why say it?
Pia, I don't want to hear it either.
Putting my moderator hat on, I've said before here, since 22 January, that references to such anecdotal hearsay about Heath (and about Jake for that matter) isn't welcome. What some people find funny, others don't. So if it could cause agro, and especially if you think it's gonna cause agro, please don't bring it here.
I want a quiet life :)
But then you went and repeated almost everything I mentioned in your next post, WDW. So, in the future all I have to do is wait till your next post.
No good deed ever goes unpunished.
Hi Paul - I didn't mention in my last post the hearsay about what Rufus supposedly said about Heath or the anti-Jewish comment. That was what caused upset not Jake being at the concert.
Anyway, let's move on :D
