Rendition Day is here at last and, while the film hasn't arrived on my own doorstep unfortunately, at least I can enjoy the screencaps posted at IHJ, which hint of deleted scenes with Jake in them. Although why any director would wish to delete an instant of film that contained Jake Gyllenhaal will always be a mystery to me.
Looking at Jake in these pictures, so soon after seeing him in Beverly Hills all shaven, reminded me of this old quote of Jake's that I read sometime ago and has now re-emerged along with Jake's beautiful chin: 'Hollywood heart-throb JAKE GYLLENHAAL has developed a huge dislike for facials, after an ex-girlfriend forced him to go through the beauty procedure. The 23-year-old actor, ex-boyfriend of SPIDER-MAN beauty KIRSTEN DUNST, finds the widely-used beautification technique unbearable. He says, "A girlfriend took me to get a facial once. It was weird to have a person pushing on your skin for an hour. I suffered for a week with little red marks."'
For those of us not fortunate enough to be able to settle back tonight with kicked-off shoes to watch Rendition, here is a reposting of a Making of documentary, which at least contains some additional Jake and is definitely worth a rewatch.
Jake's Rendition scenes were, of course, filmed in Morocco and I've spent some time today remembering back to the early part of 2007 when I imagined Jake in some exotic and warm location. Rendition's filming was a big source of interest for the Moroccan media and many local blogs. For instance, we hear of filming at El Badia palace in Marrakesh and at the coastal town of Essaouira. This interesting article by Emmanuel Levy looks at the visual style of Rendition and explores the ways in which Gavin Hood and his crew and actors recreated and visualised the grey area between right and wrong.
This was partly achieved through the opposing ways in which the worlds of Morocco and Washington were captured. There is a great account of what filming in Morocco was like for the cast. '"I think it is wonderful when you walk on the set and you have South Africans, and Moroccans, Americans and Brits," says Jake Gyllenhaal. "There is a real open heart here. I think that comes from Gavin Hood. I think every set I've been on is defined by the director."
"Shooting in Morocco with an international cast and crew was an amazing experience," adds cast member Igal Naor. "For me, as an Israeli, to feel free, and to feel comfortable, to not be afraid of anyone or anything--I felt as if I was in London or Paris. It was great. I met so many Muslims who became good friends and after two weeks, we said to ourselves, 'How can we be together? How can we have fun?? Look how close we are. Judiaism and Islam are so much the same. And it's something that makes me very happy. I have many Arab and Palestinian friends in Israel, too. Why can't it always be like that?"
Hood adds, "One of the fun things about this movie was the fact that we had crew made up from people all over the world working on a film that is essentially about the struggle of different cultures in this very stressful modern time. The debates among the crew members about the issues at hand were wonderful because I watched people grow and come to understand each other and enjoy being with each other. I hope this film reminds us that we are all just people with emotional issues and needs. I get so frustrated the way people want to talk about how people are different, yet we don't talk enough about the ways in which we are the same."'
I hope people will forgive me if I finish this post with some gratuitous Rendition Jake. Just to console those of us who have yet to receive the DVD, you understand.

Hey WDW! I got back from Greece and Jake is clean-shaven! hurray! actually I don't mind his mountain man look, but it's nice to be able to see his handsome face without "interruption"...
LOL about his comments about having facial... if he gets red marks afterwards, it only means he's not used to it... do it a couple more times, his skin will get used to it... better if I am the one doing that for him (may drool on his face though... lol)
I can't wait to see those deleted scenes! Where's my DVD???
Thanks for the post - great yummy pics *winks*
Hey - great to see you Winterbird! Did you have a good time? Jake's pleased to see you again - shaved especially :D It sounds like you're the person for the job when it comes to giving Jake facials - but he may not like the dribble ;)
I want my DVD too :( Nice pics though, eh?!
Yeah I just got done watching mine. I had a minor heart attack though. When I first tried to watch it on my TV with the surround sound, the DVD player would read it. I took it to another one and it worked fine. I guess I better throw that piece of shit out (old cheap DVD player). Ha ha.
I think that everyone will be pleased with it. I don't want to give anything away. Do you want me to tell you about the deleted scenes?
Hi BirdGirl - ooh you lucky BirdGirl you - how anxious I am to see Jake in this and how relieved Mr WDW is that he has a few nights' reprieve! I'd really like to hear about the deleted scenes so please tell us - you could always writer Spoiler above so those who don't want to know can read on.
I've had some good news today everyone - looks like the long, long commutes may soon be a thing of the past :D
hey congrats, WDW!!
now it means you have more time to write more Jake goodies for us??? lol...
this is really good news. tomorrow I hope you'll get the DVD - then you can REALLY celebrate.
Thanks Winterbird - lots more time for WDW and that's just how I want it :D Lots of celebrating to do :) Now all I need is that DVD...

Hey Oia - like the sound of that; now all we need do is teach Jake to make a martini :D
:) :)
^^^ Did I really call you Oia, Pia? Apologies, I blame the Irish Black Bush whiskey ;)
No long commutes, but no more Laahhhndun lunches with meeeee ...
*sulks*
*remembers manners*
Congrats, dear WDW ** :)
Anouska, you are what I'll miss but, instead of lunches, how about some weekend Laaahhhndun afternoons/evenings :D Talking of lunches, see you tomorrow :) xx
Wee...love Rendition Jake! Haven't had time to watch the DVD but will probably this weekend. Would love to hear the deleted stuff, Winterbird. :)
WDW, no more commutes...congrats!!
Pia and Sass have not had any Jake or Heath dreams but I hope yours become more pleasant.
Hugs all
Thanks, Get Real :D And that's such a nice wish for Pia and Sass.
Caught up with you at last,WDW,had 3 days' posts to catch up on - all of them fabulous - and I get here to hear the wonderful news that you're pretty much certain of a new job without all that horrendous travelling! I was going to e-mail you to ask how the interviews went, but no need now I get here to find the party's already started! And you're drinking one of my favourite Irish whiskeys. If only I had a bottle handy I'd join you in a glass and toast your success. Here's to you anyway hon!
If only your "Rendition" DVD would arrive things would be pretty much perfect! I have to admit, despite the lovely TL putting me on the right track to change my DVD to multi-region, that with all the RL turmoil that's been going on lately,I haven't got around to actually doing the technical jiggery-pokery and therefore have not ordered the Region 1 release of "Rendition". The tasters in this tantalising post are telling me,however, that I need to get my arse in gear, otherwise I'll have to wait a few more WEEKS to get my hands on a British copy. I'm sure that a generous helping of Jake as Douglas would do be just what the Doctor ordered!
I had to laugh at the shot of the DVD sleeve with the proclamation that "This film is perfect" underneath a 4 star rating! As five stars is normally accepted as denoting perfection in the film review industry, it struck me as a bit of a daft contradiction and a cock-up in the cover design department. Or is that just me being pedantic and pernickerty?
I'm sure we won't quibble too much with the declaration of perfection as far as "Rendition" is concerned, especially as far as Jake's performance is concerned. It is a beautifully crafted film, which doesn't pull any punches and I appreciate the irony of the fact that Gavin Hood,Igal Naor and Jake were all struck by the wonderful relations between a multi-national cast and crew, brought together to portray the devastating effects of the cultural and ideological gulf that tragically divides the people of the world.
I have to admit, however, that the intellectual and political aspects of the film are not my primary focus at the moment...unsurprisingly because I can't tear myself away from those sizzling stills of His Gorgeousness as one D.Freeman. Surely being so utterly mind-blowingly beautiful can't be legal??!! I think I should make a citizen's arrest...and no Jake, you won't have to come quietly... ;-)
WDW, this is an exceptional post! The set in Morrocco sounds exactly like the kind of place I would have loved. And not bcz of Jake. No. Really. Reading about the various cultures represented on the shoot, it is just a beautiful thing. And Jake's observations about Gavin and how a director influences the set are right on.
I don't have my copy yet, so I am off to IHJ to "capture" Jake.
Hi everyone,
Fantastic post filled with more Jake knowledge for me:)
It's 2 AM and all's well. My movie is in my player and I've watched it once...more to come.
I can't deny, the first scenes of the movie, and some of the deleted scenes are totally delicious Jake.
*speechless* *sigh*
Congratulations Kate! I missed your job change post, but I am extremely happy for you.
I commuted by car when I lived outside of LA, sometimes during rush hour. arrrgh.
One night before a July 4th weekend, I left my job and found myself in the middle of traffic leaving the city for the holiday. It took me more than three hours to make it home.
Again, good for you!
SPOILERS!!!
Deleted scenes.
I wouldn't have minded Gavin pursuing that story arc. The setup of the scene made me suspicious and I expected problems. Jake is magnificent in the movie and in the deleted scenes. I consider them some of the best in the movie.
xoxoxo

Morning everyone - anothre London peasouper out there. Thanks for all the well wishes, appreciate them :D
Hi Nadine :) Yep get your arse in gear and order that DVD! Although at this rate, the UK edition will be out before my R1 arrives!
Hey Bobbyanna - I'm really interested in the discussions about the filming in Morocco and the different cultures involved in making the film - really added colour to the movie.
Hey Sass! I'm so glad you've been enjoying the film :) I'm glad the deleted scenes have Jake in them - can't wait to see them!
Have a good day everyone :D
Good day, everyong. This morning was so foggy, that Tower Bridge has disappeared on my way to work...
Anyway, I saw this article on BBC website about Terry Gilliam's film, the A-list actors solution seems to be still on, but I don't see Jake's name on it. They mentioned Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law (not so keen on Law myself, I have to say).
Wonder if you know the details? i am so out of the loop after a weekend!
G/morning all.
'They mentioned Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law "
NYT reported same yesterday. Seems Jake is not involved.
Hi winterbird - I could barely see my dashboard on the drive into work this morning ;)
I saw this article - I wish Jake were involved but I'm glad to see the film will be finished in this way.
Morning Pia - hope the weather's a bit more normal today.
I;m frankly relieved Jake is not going to be part of the Terry Gilliam film, for me it would be too sad, having hoped to see them in a film together one day.
Hey, WDW, no fun driving in heavy fog. also spooky. like white outs, driving in snow.
Weather normal for New England. I used to come up im the springtime and wonder why everybody looked so peaked. (pronounced PEEK-ed)
Hi, winterbird. send Jakw e-mail about facials. he's gotta take care of the gorgeous phiz.
Special love WDW these days.
Thanks for the gratuitous "consolation" pics,WDW;D Yummy!!! According to PlayUsa my order is in the "packing" stage so I'm hoping it won't be too long now. How long does it take to pack a DVD anyway?! I can't wait to get my hands on it!
Nadine, you owe me a new keyboard, as the last line of your comment made me spill tea everywhere:D Not to mention the images I have in my head now of Jake in handcuffs, which is something that has never ever crossed my mind before at all *trying to look innocent and failing miserably*
Except for Johnny Depp, none of the actors who had been originally suggested are doing Dr. P. It was JD, Sean Penn and Jake. So officially it is JD, CF and JL. Pia, I am with you thinking it is best Jake is not doing it. At first I thought it would be a good idea and now I am glad he isn't on a lot of levels. It would have been a moving tribute but it would have been too sad.
Again, thanks WDW, I am still enjoying drooling over Rendition Jake! ;p
Rendition Jake-in-a-Box (PO box, that is)in Sprinfield (main PO) was "scanned for departure" yesterday. ONO! He should have worn a sweater!
thanks for your comment ((GetReal)), Im often concerned whether or not I should speak of personal emotions, such a sensitive subject, and diff'rent for each.
A thousand apologies,TL,my intention was to make you laugh but not to make you spit PG Tips all over your keyboard! ;-)
"I think I should make a citizen's arrest...and no Jake,you won't have to come quietly... ;-)"
I also found this wickedly wicked, Nadine, where shall we lock you up, coventry or comedy central?
Hi ((Pia)) How about you handcuff me to Jake and lock me in his boudoir....? ;-)
so you can be bad together, huh?
o gosh that reminds me I cant wait to see bad Brode Jake.
Hi everyone - just got home after a monster of a commute (3 and a half hours :() so just catching up and outting my feet up with a chilean red (thanks Mr WDW).
What's all this talk of handcuffed Jake? I think I need to lie down (hope your keyboard's OK, TL!).
Btw, TL, my Rendition DVD is still being 'packed'... :(
poor jake in his boxers, packed, scanned and transited - Jake you shoulda worn that sweater, we arent in Marrakesh anymore, lil darlin'.
