Yesterday, Saturday, around noon, a private memorial service was held for Heath Ledger on the Sony lot in Los Angeles and it was a star-studded affair, with Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Sienna Miller, Ellen DeGeneres, Lindsay Lohan and Josh Hartnett in attendance.
According to People: 'The gathering also included Ledger's father Kim, industry luminaries and those connected to CAA (the agency that represented Ledger), including Cruise and Holmes, who costarred with Michelle Williams on Dawson's Creek. It comes a week after relatives and close friends – including ex-girlfriend Naomi Watts – paid tribute to the 28-year-old actor at a smaller service at an L.A. cemetery. Saturday's service began around noon on the lot, which is closed to the public. Attendees included Miller, Ledger's Casanova costar, and Shannyn Sossamon, who starred with Ledger in A Knight's Tale. Speakers included [Todd] Haynes, who directed him in last year's Bob Dylan film I'm Not There.'
According to another account, 'The hour-long service included five eulogies, one from Ledger's father Kim and another from his sister Kate, as well as director Todd Haynes...' This report goes on to speculate that Michelle 'Williams and Matilda are expected to fly to Perth for the funeral, as are Ledger's close Hollywood friends, including Brokeback Mountain co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, who is Matilda's godfather.'
Rendition
Although Rendition will shortly be released as a DVD (on 19 February in the US), it has yet to reach the cinemas of more than a few countries. This month, the film opens in Norway, Australia, Sweden and Italy. Today, the film - and Jake - featured in one of Sweden's leading papers, Dagens Nyheter, in an article by political commentator Niklas Ekdal. Thanks to Herman for sending this to me with the accompanying photograph of Jake.
The feature brings the subject of extraordinary rendition to the fore and is a commentary on the use of this practice by the Bush administration. It comments that dictatorships around the world can not be expected to act in the spirit of international law while such activities continue. 'The disregard of human rights in the war against terrorism is worse than a crime. It is a stupidity.' Ekdal concludes by calling the practice an 'historical catastrophe'. Incidentally, Jake is described as 'dazzling'.

I;d love to know the thoughts of Annie Proulx, upon the death of an actor she said understood Ennis better than herself.
Impossible to discuss this with RL friends, who are not immersed in the film and lives of the actors.
Frustrating! When I attempt to do so I feel like a fool. which I am not.
anyway: service was in mortuary, not "cemetary" as People peeps(booo!) say: - mortuary also indicates funeral home and it is common to have "viewing' and service in a funeral home. although Im for Jewish tradition that does not allow open coffin (cause this allows enemies to say bad things)and burial as soon as possible.
Im getting fairly sick of the artist/actor community being characterized according to their celebrity, wealth, shenanigans, etc. Although this has always been true, I suppose.
Im not a Heath-an - it must be terrible for those who are. But I did today print a picture out and place it on my desk, with lit candle. Maybe out of desperation that this will help hasten the goodbyes, that seem endless but are, of course, necessary. Sigh!
But seriously I love seeing the picture of Heath on my desk. He's so beautiful, and has served his art so well!
Lovely picture of long legged Heath. & yes who cannot be dazzled by Jake?
Hope you're taking care of yourself WDW - ! ! !
Hi all
Am at Barnes and Noble and browsing Interview Mag w/Amy Adams on cover. Letters to the editor section has replies to Jake's Oct. cover story.
"A Stake In Jake"
"I've never seen Jake Gyllenhaal looking as sullen as he does on your October cover. What did photographer Mark Seliger do to piss him off? I was almost worried Gyllenhaal was in a bout of depression, but at least he seems okay in his interview with David Fincher. Please, we all like seeing Jake happy!
Steve Raglin Omaha, NE"
"Getting to read about actors like Jake Gyllenhaal is refreshing. It's good to know that there are some real people out there who act as a profession and not in order to make a statement in the media.
Robin Starr Via the Internet."
I will be back later to comment on the post.
Hi Pia, thanks for that. I find it difficut myself processing all this, but I'm glad I can work through it here. I can't imagine how bad it must be for those who hold Heath as dear as we do Jake, in fact I try not to think on that one. I'm doing OK, thanks Pia *)
Hey Get Real, thanks for the info on the letters. I thought Jake looked absolutely sexy as hell in those pictures, I don't need to see him grinning in a photoshoot. Just the thought of that picture of Jake carrying the bike... It's funny how people can look at the same photo and interpret it so differently. See you later!
Hey all,
Back from B&N. I agree with you, WDW. I thought Jake looked hella sexy on the cover and in the Interview mag pics. I don't know why some need him to smile all the time. Sure he has one of the best smiles out there today, but I think he looked amazing in the pics. Especially the bike picture....guh so hot! I really liked the other comment (from Robin Starr) though.
I am having a hard time like others here about Heath's death. Am amazed at the beautiful tributes to him. Michelle's statement was achingly beautiful and totally heartbreaking. Heath was very loved. I feel so for those that knew and cared for him. If it hard for us I can't imagine what they are going through. That is why I wish people would leave Jake alone about making a statement. Some reports are that he will be at the Perth funeral next week. Guess we will have to wait and see. I think he is back on the Brothers set. I hope they are caring for him. (((Jake)))
On a lighter note. I had to cheer myself up yesterday so I went and saw the movie "27 Dresses" with Katherine Heigl. I was not a big fan of hers even though I thought "Knocked Up" was very funny. Anyway, she was charming in this one and had great chemistry with James Marsden. If you just want a mindless fun film to make you laugh a little go see "27 Dresses."
Off to watch the Superbowl. GO GIANTS!!!
Okay am watching and Russell Crowe is doing Superbowl promos...weird, lol.
(((hugs all)))
Go Giants, indeed! Im a New Yorker living in Massachusetts and find myself a minority voice big time.
Laughed myself silly over "Knocked Up"
LOL, I am sure you are a minority voice, Pia. I lived in Mass. myself and yes it was the minority to love NY teams.
Yeah I laughed myself silly to "KU" too. :p
Hey Pia and Get Real. I expect Jake's on the set too, which is good as he can be left alone there.
They're actually showing the Superbowl live in the UK tonight on normal TV for the first time - but too late for me.
Hope the right team wins :)
Mornging everyone... good weather in London this morning, for a change.
Sunny and warm in Perth, it will make a good resting place for Heath...
i can't believe some people would give Jake grief over "what to do when your good friend dies", I hope people stop demanding and speculating what he will do or should do.
Thanks for the Rendition news... this time I will order from playusa in advance. Quite amazing that it's still waiting to be opened in some countries.
The fact that ''Rendition'' has not yet been shown in some countries in Europe including my own, Sweden, might have something to do with that the distributors waited for a possible nomination for the Academy Award, but I have not heard any speculations about it here.
BTW, I translated the Swedish word "lysande" in the caption to the picture of Jake, with "dazzling". After having looked in my dictionaries and my big Swedish synonym book I perhaps ought to have translated it with "luminous". The word "lysande" has to do with the word "ljus" i.e. "light". The word "dazzling" has a connotation to "blinding" which I believe is not a word for Jake's performance in ANY movie. I believe Jake is a man who believes in "enlightment", i.e. to inform people what is happening around and inside them.
As my favourite reading in my early teens, besides Jules Verne, Conan Doyle and Alexandre Dumas, was to take one of our about 24 volumes of a Swedish encyclopedia "Svensk Uppslagsbok" and just open it anywhere and read and look at the pictures.
A little snobbishly I sometimes call myself an encyclopedist. Well, it was a good start for my later job, after having quit studies in theology after seven years, journalist.
Yes, please don't throuw egg and rotten tomatoes, please, I am as aware as any critic of our profession, of all the sins of my collegues. My ideals for newspapers are The Guardian and The New York Times, but I cannot refrain from looking into others. I excuse myself, sometimes, with the idea that I really have to see what The Others are reading. ("Highbrow!" - note of the printer)

Hey Winterbird - what a gorgeous day it is - and a day's holiday for me. Perth is a beautiful place and it's nice to think of it being so warm and sunny there.
Hi Herman - these staggered releases are usual for most movies and it often bemuses me. But with Zodiac it infuriated me.
Have a good day everyone.
6:30 a.m. in Los Alamos, not so brrr, 37 degrees F, and snow showers: exact same forecast in Western Ma.
Perhaps putting a handsome photo of Heath on my desk near my candle was good medicine. Lovely dream of a beautiful man who wrote something for my diary.
Good holiday WDW and yay Giants heh heh heh.
Morning all!
YAY GIANTS!!!!!!!!! It was like New Years Eve outside last night. People honking horns and screaming. :)
Cloudy now but should clear later and fairly warm. Have a good day everyone.
Have a nice holiday, WDW and all those who celebrate in the UK!
Spoke to soon. It is snowing outside!
Aggghhh, Blogger ate my comment again...
hey Pia and Get Real! Congratulations to your guys for winning. I was looking up the result this morning and Mr WDW said 'What sport is that?' Is it my imagination or have I seen Jake wearing a Giants' cap?
Not a national holiday, just me putting my feet up. It's such a beautiful day out there, I should get out. Snow in NY? I like the sound of that.
Have a good day and do some celebrating - that must have been some party in NYC :D
Thanks WDW for posting the story about Heath. I had read this before from another site. I had thought that Heath was already in Australia and they had laid him to rest.
I agree, Pia, I am Jewish too and while I respect other religion's traditions I like the Jewish belief in burying a body as soon as possible then going through the grieving process. I feel for his family. It was horrible having Heath die but to have him die so far from home and having to make the long trip to take him back home, must be horrible.
I think they are being very generous in letting his friends say goodbye to him. All of these memorial services only prolong their own agony.
I wonder did they have an open casket? I know I didn't have that for my parents and could never put myself through that. I wouldn't want my last memory of my loved one to be lying in a casket (this is my own feelings, I'm not knocking anyone who does want an open casket)
I have to admit when I first saw BBM I had it bad for Jake and considered myself a major Jake fan. But over the two years Heath had slowly grown on me. As I got to know him through his other movies I was amazed at his talent. So I can definitely say I am a Heathen and yes his death hit me very hard.
I do hope that Jake will go to Perth to say goodbye to his friend
About Rendition, I wonder what the countries that are about to see it will think
Trekfan
Thanks WDW as always for your wonderful post, I'm so happy that Hollywood seems to be showing its human side for Heath...
Yes, finally Rendition is about to be released in Italy too (29th of February) and I will let you know about the audience and critcs response over here.
Although I live in Massachusetts, I'm wary of sports teams who win all the time, because they can get insufferable. It does the Patriots no harm to lose the Superbowl once in a while. I had hoped that Jake might have attended yesterday's game, if he is seriously thinking of portraying football star Joe Namath.
Hi Trekfan. I know it's hit you hard and I wish you love to cope with it. It sounds like the funeral will be later in the week. It definitely is generous of Heath's family to allow so many people the cchance to pay their respects. It seems the Sony service had 1000 attendees.
Hi Xenia - yes, do let me know what Italy thinks. It's about time it opened there - it feels like quite a time since we saw it together in Rome.
Hey Paul. I doubt Jake's much in the mood for this sort of thing at the moment. There'll be plenty more games to watch before he's ready to be Joe Namath.
Just as I was about to go out, the heavens opened...
"Just as I was about to go out, the heavens opened..."
Not only you write great headlines, WDW, but great tag-lines (exit lines). :) :) :)
Lovd the last line of EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN. Won't give it away. Lovd the film.
Aw, shucks, Pia! Thanks. I'll try and watch that film if ever I should get the time for anything!
I love reading this wonderful post, as usual. These are sad times all round, but I pray Jake is getting plenty of love, and hugs, and family time, while he mourns and remembers his dearest friend Heath.
