Bushy-bushy? The eyebrow issue

While Jake's off enjoying his holiday weekend, we have the chance to address a serious and divisive topic - and I'm not talking green yucky herbs here. We may get used to the coming and going of facial hair, even leg hair (although thankfully the chest hair remains sacrosanct), but the question of whether Jake Gyllenhaal is an eyebrow plucker is an issue that has simmered under the surface for years, dividing families and communities.

Jake Gyllenhaal's eyebrows have a life of their own, judging by the number of times they get a mention in the media. The Blade (in January 2006) put it succinctly: 'Who is this Jake Gyllenhaal? Why is he in everything, but has not yet been embraced by movie audiences? Is it those bushy-bushy eyebrows, Ernie and Bert-esque, framing long eyelashes and the kind of googly blue eyeballs that generally only come glued to clam shells in tourist spots?'

The clam analogy has me perplexed, I must admit, but the 'googly blue' is good.

So, while some regard Jake's eyebrows as 'bushy bushy', others have given the name 'The Jake Gyllenhaal' to the overly manicured. And then, maybe the middle ground, a reviewer of The Good Girl called Jake's eyebrows' perpetually depressed'. However, this suggests to me that, as a good actor should, Jake puts those brows of his to work in front of the camera. Jake's brows have also caught the attention of the furry browbeaters.

These days, though, Jake seems happy with them just the way they are...

This post is a tribute to that little gap in Jake's left eyebrow...

Ooooooooh, and how I loooooove this gap in this left eyebrow!!!!
And I love them bushy bushy...

So, browbeater Tara: Keep your f***ing hands off Jake's eyebrows!

Although I think Jack Twist had plucked eyebrows, but luckily not too much, so they were kind of okay - hm, there probably weren't that many sheepherders around in the 60s with plucked eyebrows, LOL!

Jake's eyebrows sure deserve a post for themselves!!!
So thanks for that!!! ;D

My word today: pantions... Yeah, I have my panties on...

Hey Uli! Good to see you - hope you're having a good weekend - hot here :D

Ooh, I looooove the gap in Jake's eyebrow - love it :) I like 'em bushy bushy too so the browbeaters have to keep clear.

Doesn't Jake have the most amazing expressive face? - beautiful and fascinating all at the same time.

Oh, what a word... Mine is podysess and I have no idea what that means :D

Can't wait for him showing us again what he can do with it in a new movie... (LOL, do I seem impatient?? :D :D)

It's hot here, too... Too hot for my taste already, I have to admit... :P

Have a good start into the next week tomorrow, despite having to work... :)

I'm impatient too, Uli! - the wait goes on and on and on... Thanks, Uli - I hate having to work on a sunny, hot holiday but I have a long weekend next week to make up for it:) No doubt it'll chuck it down...

Have thought a long time about doing a post about the same thing. Great minds think alike Kate. They went a little tweezer crazy around Bubble Boy - even I was jealous of that arch. : )

I like them fuller but you know he does still some weekly maintenance to keep them looking sharp.

Good to see you, Special K - great minds :) Ooh, tweezer crazy - I try to imagine Jake sitting there, with the tweezers, egging himself on. I've only used them the once and I swear I nearly passed out. I like them fuller too, but I wonder if Jake feels like they're in control...

I love your avatar :D

Hi guys,

Jakes brows are beautiful, I prefer them bushy-bushy too, and he does have the most expressive face, those brows bring out his eyes. Too much grooming of them doesn't suit him, IMHO anyway! I wonder if we'll get anymore movie news?

Just got back from Terminator Salvation, very well done I thought. Frightening, but touching, and filmed beautifully. :)

Great post, WDW!!
Indeed Jake's brows deserve a special post. I've always wondered if he plucks them now and then, as much as I used to wonder if he wore contact lenses LOL, but I like him the most when his eyebrows are vaguely bushy-messy, with that endearing gap that you mention too.

I'm still reeling from my latest Donnie Darko viewing the other night. That film seems to get better for me with each vieweing, no wonder it was a sleeper hit.

I'm off to Rome tomorrow for about 3 weeks. Will bring my laptop, but if the weather stays fine (32 degrees today!) I hope to spend some time at the beach.

Have a good rest of bank holiday weekend!!

Good morning everyone! It was like driving through the streets of a ghost town this morning when I came to work - the rest of the country is still in bed - sob :(

Hi Bertie! Bushy-bushy is best as they do allow Jake to pull the most wonderful expressions with them. Good to know you enjoyed Terminator. I'm not sure when that opens here but I'll have to see it. Movie news for Jake would be so welcome - Terminator seemed to come out very quickly, and Wolverine, I wish one of Jake's would do the same :/

Ooh Paola have a wonderful time! I hope you're able to pop in and tell us what you're up to. The beach sounds good :) Donnie Darko just doesn't age :D

Have a good day everyone :D

Are we going to get a special post for every special part of his body??? *wink wink*

LOL... I love thick eyebrows.. in fact, that's like a requirement for boyfriend material for me when I was 16... :P

I think Jake's eyebrows are normally well-kept, I do recommend waxing for his case though - cos waxing just sounds so right when it applies to Jake... *g*

thanks for the great post!

Hi there Winterbird! You mean Jake has parts of his body that aren't special? :D There are plenty of Jake body parts I could devote posts to - you have a part in mind? I like thick brows too, although not so thick they meet in the middle (I get flashbacks from American Werewolf in London for that condition!). I do like though that Jake takes such care of himself and his brows :D I didn't realise you could wax eyebrows?

Is it home time yet? The sun's out, it's hot out there and I want to go out and play :(

Yeah, I'm heading for "Terminator salvation" later today.....

I do spend hours daily pondering the significance of Jake's eyebrows (not!), and my most insightful conclusion so far has been that Jake would probably not stand before a mirror plucking his own eyebrows, but rather go to a salon of some sort to have a professional do it for him. If there are other people there who photograph him using their cellphones......

Is this the first of many posts on each special part of Jake's body WDW. I'll be looking forward to those:)

I like eyebrows to be tidy but not too tidy to the point of being non-existant. I think Jake's eyebrows frame his beautiful eyes nicely.

Good to hear positive comments on Terminator. Looking forward to that. Think it is out in Ireland & UK in two weeks time. 5th June.

Enjoy rest of your bank holiday whoever is lucky enough to have one.

Ours is next week but it won't be a relaxing one for me as
I'm involved in a play bring staged next weekend . The stress levels are already riding and it's only M

Funny post, WD&W. Jake's eyebrows have long amused me. That link you included that accused Jake of being overly-plucked was a low blow. Left to his own devices we've all seen just how woolly Jake can get. The only time his brows look wonky is when he's shooting a movie (Lovely and Amazing, yea gads! Not! Bad make-up artist!)

I'm always surprised just how different Jake's face can look with small changes to his hair and brows.

Hey Paul! I hope you enjoy the film. Ooh it's enough to become a professional BH eyebrow plucker. How I'd love to see the pictures of that one :D

Hi Carol! Thanks for the info on the release of Terminator here. Good luck with your play - that sounds very stressful.

JoeAnn, you did make me chuckle with the woolly and the low blow :DD The eyebrows in L&A were far too manicured, I agree. Jake's face constantly changes with just the littlest of touches - it's fascinating :D
