A Chic NYC Sighting and Sam Mendes wants another shot at Jarhead

The strange and mysterious tweeting world of twitters has alerted the inhabitants of New York City to the possibility of encountering Jake Gyllenhaal around each and any corner of that city. Time for all NYC Gyllenhaalics to start frequenting those bistros and coffee shops, and hat shops. Talking of hats, Jake has been spotted again today. This time Jake was a 'Chic Sighting' for Fashion Weekly: 'Meanwhile at Balthazar, a knit cap-wearing Jake Gyllenhaal arrived for a late breakfast with three distinguished gents.'

From my reckoning, it would seem that the sighting was chic for five reasons: 1) It was Jake 2) the hat was a beanie and not a fedora (the beanie is now officially forgiven by WDW) 3) Jake was with 'distinguished gents' (presumably, they wore ties) 4) Balthazar is a French bistro of 'exceptional design' 5) it was a 'late' breakfast. Having studied the breakfast menu, I like to think that Jake's breakfast featured egg with soldiers.

I also like to think that a late breakfast meeting with three distinguished gents means that Jake is putting his autograph on the contract for Love and Other Drugs, aka LOG.

Sam's Jarhead regrets

Sam Mendes has briefly touched on Jarhead during his publicity rounds for Away We Go and there would be no complaints about this statement: 'I’d like to do a director’s cut of Jarhead.'

'[How was that film compromised?] I took the politics out of it. [Why?] I don’t know. Because it felt wrong at the time, I think. I was too close to it, and I couldn’t give it a context. We were in the middle of the height of the Gulf War, and people were determined to make the film into something that was political, and I felt that I wanted it to stand on its own, and be timeless. The thing I regret, which I didn’t have to do on Away We Go, was that I didn’t have a chance to be away from it for a while. I shot Away We Go, then did a play, then came back to the film and did post. So that gave me some objectivity with it, whereas with Jarhead, I was working on it right up until its release date. I had a strange experience during the premiere of Jarhead, I was watching it and thinking ‘Wait a minute, they’ve skipped a scene! Where did that scene go?’ Then I realized, I’d cut the fucking thing! (laughs) And that shouldn’t happen to you as a filmmaker. You should know the landscape of your movie intimately. That just shows you that sometimes when you don’t have the time, you can really compromise your own material without meaning to.'

Jarhead is such a strong film that I doubt many of us (biased as we possibly are) would have thought the film compromised and would instead argue that some films have too long in post-production - I can think of several examples. But a director's cut of Jarhead would be some treat and I hope Sam gets the chance to release a film with a landscape he recognises and feels comfortable in. Obviously, it would feature more shower scenes.

More of Jake in NYC! :D Balthazar is a great restaurant, owned by a Brit. Seems he also charmed a bunch of ladies at a business meeting. Thanks to Twitter for all the info, but now we need some pictures.

Sigh, it is so rainy and nasty here today. Seems he was able to be out and about! :) I just want to see him. Am going out later *hopes*

Hey Get Real! I didn't realise Balthazar is owned by a Brit - no wonder there are soldiers on the breakfast menu then :D

I like the sound of all this business going on - makes me think we may actually see Jake in the movies again one of these days! But yeah, Twitter is good and fun for little tips, but we do need pictures. How I want pictues...

It's raining here too, after weeks of sun. I wish you every luck when you go out later! *)

Hi Flower! I'd like to be there too :D (You won't realise and I hope you don't mind me mentioning it but 'bastard' is rather rude :) ) Brit here means someone from Britain. I hope Get Real manages to be in the right place at the right time!

No worries Flower! You do brilliantly posting in English. I occasionally write in French and German and I know how hard it is *) It would be great to be in NYC with Jake!

jake gyllenhaal and robert pattinson are staying at the same hotel? um, you know where to find me this weekend.

Just saw this on twitter. Posted about two hours ago.

Does anyone know where Robert Pattinson is staying:)

A possible Jarhead Director's Cut...YES!!!

A "business" meeting...Yay! Beanie or no beanie this is good news!

Hmmm...I am getting weary of twitter reports...how does anyone know if what people report on twitter is accurate? Not that we know for sure if what is posted on JJ, TMZ, x17, etc. is accurate either but with those sites we get pictures and videos so we can "see" for ourselves where he is. With twitter...well...I could go on twitter and say I saw Jake Gyllenhaal at the supermarket down the street from me in Massachusetts. And who could stop me?!?! Just saying.

Anyway...my research on Robert P's hotel came up to nothing but a bunch of his fans doing what we're doing...wondering where he is staying in NYC...LOL!!

I love all the info, though, so thank you for the research WDW! I want pictures so, so bad...where are the people with cameras in that great big city of New York anyway?

BTW - Flower - you are doing a great job with your English and you're so cool to be open to corrections when it is needed (just to help you along like WDW did)! I don't know how you do it...I don't know how WDW speaks the other languages she does either...I can speak my native language and that is IT!! So kudos to everyone here that can speak more than one language!

Sorry...another l-o-n-g comment from BBMISwear...I'll sign off now!

Cheers! :-)

It is very windy here and little bit depressive.. C'mon paps do some work and bring us some pics. :))
I am so impatient !!!!

I'm looking for help (or explanation). For a month I cannot open the 'gallery' part of IHJ... Maybe anyone knows what's wrong?

The error massage is: the connection with the server has been reseted during loading of the site. Plaese try again.

I'm trying and trying and it never works... :(

Please feel free to delete this comment if it's completely out of place...

Good morning everyone! Chucking it down out there - yuck. Definitely picked the right weekend to go away. Hope it's better in NYC...

Hey Carol! Jake and Robert in the same hotel? Oh, the world is a strange place.... It's funny thinking of Rob's fans thinking along the same lines as us!

Doesn't anyone have a camera?????

Morning BBMISwear! Business meetings are good, very good :D Twitter is such an odd beast. People can say anything they like, truth or made up. But I suppose sometimes you get a pattern. I was thinking about this, that now instead of texting a sighting to your friends, you can just twitter it to friends and anyone else listening it. Hmmm, Jake's in a Mass. supermarket? Excellent! I love that you did research on Rob's hotel! Keep going!

You're so right, I am so impressed that people can comment in a foreign language, and also that anyone can get past some of my BritSpeak!

See you later, BBMISwear :-)

You're doing a great job, Flower! Italian too? I tried Italian (by reading Italian Star Trek books!) but I found it too hard. I feel like I should have a go at learning another language.

I want to see Jake too! He's out and about being busy, and not a glimmer of a pic.

Hi there Ania :) Sorry to hear of your IHJ troubles. Are you using Internet Explorer? I can't access the gallery at all with IE without deleting my cookies each time. But now I've converted to Mozilla I have no problems at all. Have another go with Mozilla, or delete all your cookies in IE. Let me know how you get on. If you still have trouble, I'll ask Steph if she has any ideas.

Have a great day everyone! And if you're in NYC remember the Golden Rule - Never leave home without a camera.

Hi WDW :)))
Italian language is very similar to dialect which people speak on Croatian islands plus two or three years learning at courses... there you go.. you are almost Italian. :D

Robert P. is too pale for my taste. No wonder he plays vampire :)))

Carol said...

I have my friends on holidays in New York warned to have the cameras at the ready:)

I don't understand the Robert Pattinson thing at all. I agree Flower he is way too pale. I don't think he looks very healthy to be honest. He reminds me of Pete Doherty though having seen Pete Doherty performing live a few times- Petes better looking.

BTW Flower I have to say your English is really good. I haven't much foreign languages except a bit of French so I envy all the multi-lingual posters here.

Have a great day:)

Hi Flower! Robert's not for me either - far too skinny and young. He looks quite sweet, though.

Hi Carol! Good luck to your friends - on the mission :D I think I'd go for Robert over Pete though cos of his smile.

It's just about stopped raining here - I may venture out :D

BBMISwear said...

Okay so I went to bed and then woke up (assuming Jake did too as he is currently in the same time zone as me) and still no pictures!!! LOL!!! And nothing new on Robert P's hotel (his fans are becoming very frustrated indeed)!!

I love the Italian language discussion...I took a bit of Italian before I went to Italy for a 2 week trip and I found it very difficult. It did help me to read some signs and understand a few words while there but that's it. All 4 of my grandparents moved from Italy to Boston when they were in their late teens and spoke Italian fluently...you'd think it would be in my genes to pick up the language easily...NOT!!

I have so much fun here! Talk later...

:-)

Hi BBMISwear :-) I really thought there might be new pics today.... sigh. I bet you had a great time in Italy - that's a heritage to be proud of. My family tree has been traced back quite a few hundred years and there's not a drop of any blood from outside these shores - I think that may be partly why I like travelling so much. Mind you, having said, I think half of Perth is populated by my relatives! I have so much fun here too - it does me good to hear you do :-)

WDW, thank you very much for the advice, unfortunately it didn't work for me :(
I usually use Mozzilla, but I tried IE, as well...

Perth ??? Heath Ledger Perth ???

God this man makes me so sad. Every look of him reminds me how beautiful human being he was.
I can't help it :D
i am so weak when Aries come at questions.. i have many friends born in that great zodiac sign and i love them so much.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Ania - I'm sorry that didn't work - I don't understand it. I've emailed Stephanie to ask if she has any advice.

(((Flower))) I didn't meant to make you sad - Perth is a beautiful place :)

Beautiful place with sun and sandy beaches.. : )))

Given my family tree, it's not unexpected that I would suffer from bloody-minded spells. Right now, I'm brooding about the comments about Jake's acting in "Brothers." And the posting above about Jake kissing Kirsten Dunst reminded me of that "Spiderman" actress who committed suicide. When AOL gave the headline that an actress who starred in "Spiderman" had killed herself, I assumed that they meant Kirsten. :-( What a terrible blow that would have been!

But, I think I'm feeling better already. A director's cut of "Jarhead" would be great, though I would want to have a chance to see it in a real movie theater.

I just saw "Hangover," which was just the kind of surreal screwball comedy that I like. One of the leads was in "Bubble boy" with Jake, and another was in "Trust the man" with Maggie.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Very beautiful, Flower - I'd love to go! My nephew is there at the moment.

Paul! Good to see you :) The Sheridan comments about Jake stuck in my mind too, but I do think the film could have been a learning experience for both Jim and Jake. Such a cultural difference for the two of them. Sam Mendes had troubles sometimes with the way Jake interpreted scenes but look at the result - and also an ensuing friendship with Mr and Mrs Mendes.

The suicide of this young actress is simply awful for its senselessness. Kirsten would be a great loss - I don't like to think of that.

I'm glad you're feeling better. I don't know the film Hangover. We're so far behind here. I didn't get to the movies today as it was so wet, which makes me moody. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I most definitely agree with the concept of a "director's cut" of Jarhead. There are some scenes that truly deserve more attention for a much longer period of time.

I can think of at least two such sequences...
