Jake Gyllenhaal - 'a dreamy loveboat whose body you wish you could drape around you like a duvet'

Lately, there's been a lot of talk about possible future movie roles for Jake Gyllenhaal, there's also been talk about possible past movie roles for Jake. This can mean only one thing, it is now time to talk about the past movie role that Jake was rumoured to have got, didn't get, but then everyone thought he'd got it anyway because a bunch of people can't (or at least couldn't) tell the difference between Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. While, to you and me, this might seem a bit like not being able to tell halibut from squid, Jake's alleged similarity to Tobey has persisted. Some people might even think they could be brothers...

There is an upside, Jake gets the credit for a role he no doubt wanted and was even offered when Tobey had to make a choice between having a bad back and doing some of Spider-Man's more spidery stunts. Jake had the role for the grand total of two days. Nevertheless (Alternative Press 2002): 'I have to say, I just saw Spider-Man, and it's awesome... And I'm not just saying that because I always get mistaken for Tobey Maguire... It's really nice now, because people are like, 'We really loved you in Spider-Man', and I'm like 'Thanks! It was fun to make.''

Mind you, it wasn't just Spider-Man. Jake was quoted in a Mistaken Identities article in EW as saying,'I always get Tobey Maguire. 'I loved you in Cider House Rules.''

We've talked before about how close Jake was to being Spider-Man - the movie business can be tough: '"Jake was talked to," [Spider-Man producer] Arad says. "We had to talk to others because this is an action movie. Not a walk and talk picture ... God forbid Tobey signed on and then had a life-threatening injury. But all is well now."'

Nevertheless, it's clear Jake would have loved to have done it (a Day After Tomorrow podcast): 'Something changed in me when I saw Spider-Man actually, I have to say... There was a movie that was a huge movie, that was made for a lot of money, had incredible special effects, but it also had a story that, though it was simple in a lot of ways, was something really important for people to see at the time that it came out - which is just about love, like it's just a love story, but all the love stories that we've seen even in smaller movies become so cliche and it was really great to see a story like that. And something in me switched and said Wow, you can actually be in a movie that is a huge movie, that is like hugely entertaining and so much fun! That some people walk out of going 'Oh wow, there's something to think about' or there's something to feel. Not everybody will but some people will and that was really cool as I think that's why I want to make movies.'

Even during Rention promotion, Jake was quoting Spider-Man: '“Lately it's felt like a great responsibility," Gyllenhaal says of his career. "It's an interesting thing, in our generation at least, to be thrust into [a position of importance.] There's the line from 'Spider-Man': 'With great power comes great responsibility.'"'

When it didn't happen, Jake began to be a regular frequenter of the gym: 'Jake seems to be taking this very seriously. He has bought himself new Nike gear and he works very hard. He has a thin frame, but if he keeps working this hard, he'll be buffed up in no time at all.' When asked about his training for Jarhead, Jake replied once: 'I got bitten by a spider - just call me Spiderman.' In 2005, Jake and Ziyi Zhang presented an Academy Award for visual effects to the Spider-Man 2 team. Jake was a good choice to present it, now completely beefed up for Jarhead and definitely looking every part the superhero.

During the earlier years of Jake's career, comparisons between Jake and the older Tobey were rife. For example: 'Gyllenhaal, with Tobey Maguire's sleepy eyes and sly smile, is fascinating as Donnie, smoothly making the frequent transitions between normal, beyond-his-years angst and the delusional misfirings of someone truly disturbed.' 'In Moonlight Mile, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a troubled young man who is also holding in his feelings, yet with his big, dark doe eyes and Cupid-gone-Mona Lisa smile, Gyllenhaal looks as placid and innocent in his funk as the winner of the Tobey Maguire act-alike sweepstakes.' Both actors have been called natural Holden Caulfields.

I cannot resist quoting this description of Jake from the Telegraph review of Donnie Darko: 'But it's Jake Gyllenhaal who really catches the eye. With his doleful, mischievous features, knowing and yet so fretful, he looks in equal measure like an exhausted catamite and a dreamy loveboat whose body you wish you could drape around you like a duvet. He has a gift for sincerity, convincing us that Donnie's outbursts and feelings of confusion are more than just fits of pre-grunge teen petulance. Tobey Maguire was once - almost - this good.'

But a few years have gone by and now both Jake and Tobey have risen above the confusion and rivalry to work together in the roles that some people may have thought they were born to play - Brothers.

"Jake Gyllenhaal - 'a dreamy loveboat whose body you wish you could drape around you like a duvet'" Wow! That's a very catchy title for a post and one of the best descriptions of Jake I've ever heard! Jake as my own personal duvet...what a great way to get warm on a cold winter night. Or any night, really. :D

I still don't get how people can confuse Jake with Tobey, they look nothing alike to me. Jake seems to be a good sport about it though and I guess there are worst things than being confused with Tobey. He's not a bad actor and seems like a nice guy. Can't wait for Brothers!

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

It's a wonderful description, Olympia! Jake would make the perfect duvet even on the hottest day of the year. I've never understood how anyone can muddle Jake and Tobey either but yeah there are worse things and it's good to see them act together after all this - can't wait!

I hope you have a good weekend too!

I didn't know Mare Winningham is in this movie. I think she is a great actress. I also see Sam Shepherd is in it too.

I would love to see Jake do the Lance Armstrong biopic (if there ever is one. He was biking with Lance (and Matthew M) about 2 or 3 year ago and I had thought that Jake was going to do the movie then.

Mmmmmm what a nice description!

I love Spiderman, and that's my favorite line from it too - and I love the soundtrack to it, and of course, lovely Kiki as M.J. She fits that part so well. :)

I do see a slight resemblance between Jake and Tobey, especially when Jake was younger, so they'll look like real brothers in Brothers. I loved Mare Winningham too - good to see her back. And Sam Shepard, sigh.

What a great, witty, fun post enough to get my head out of these books. "A part they were born to play". Can't wait to see Brothers. Jake takes the comparison of Tobey with such good humour. He was also confused with Jason Biggs so I'll take Tobey anyday (I loved Tobey's rant at the paps few months ago - shows he's not as soft as he looks.). Jake as a duvet? Delicious idea to wake up to.

I hope he's enjoying his time off before the madness begins next year. You play a very important role WDW that you take seriously and are so consistent with. Thank you for keeping us entertained and interested in this 'puzzle inside a mystery wrapped up in an enigma'.

I was wondering why its driving me so mad waiting for his next movie to come out like after BBM when I remembered we had a treasure trove of past movies to catch up on. Some movies I can revisit I suppose. Some I just can't. So still not so patiently waits for my jailbird, street urchin prince of a congressman :DD

I always wanted to see Jake in Spiderman.. :))
God Day :))

Ahh! Donnie. I love him second after Jack, and I knew of him first. He'll always be a very special boy. What a fantastic description from the Telegraph - I'll have to save that one!

I'm sooooo glad Jake was never Spiderman.

There was no sign of Jake on my local streets, I'm afraid; despite veerrrry careful scrutiny.

Happy weekend!

Good morning everyone! The weekend at last and it's gorgeous out there :D Good to see you all!

Hi Sweetpea :D I think Mare is a wonderful actress - Brothers has such a good cast.

Thanks Anon! I've just been having a look. 'no shit, just saw Jake Gyllenhaal in Sherman Oaks...did not profess undying love...how ever, did say "Hi Jake," and got a smile and a hello.' She sounds like she's in shock now.

Forgive the ugly link (but thanks to Nit Twit I know what to link!)

Morning Bertie! Confession time - I've not seen Spider-Man (due to my superhero aversion - with a couple of notable exceptions) but I think Tobey was just right for that - KIrsten too. I do agree about a resemblance when Jake was younger, but he's definitely grown out of that now :D

Thanks so much, Sheba! What a lovely thing to say *) I'm glad this post distracted you from your books. The waiting is hard. I'm too impatient for the new movies to watch the old ones these days.

Hi Flower!

Morning TD :D It's a great description - and so accurate :D With Jake probably back in LA you can take a rest now!

OT for Brits - the Sunday Times comes with a special DVD of Withnail & I tomorrow, along with a documentary, I think, about it and some W&I booze tips :D

Have a great day everyone!

TD i always want to see him as Spiderman because of his relationship with Kirsten but now i realize that wouldn't be such great idea and i think you are Right. Jake is type for character role such as BBM and Brothers. But it doesn't mean i wouldn't watch PoP. I hardly wait for that movie.
Sometimes i think i will grow old till that movie come to my theatres.
xoxo to all..

I don't think anyone would mistaken them in real life, Jake is about half a foot taller!

Tobey is alright, I like him in Wonder Boys, but Spiderman 3 is a disappointment and I think doing Spiderman 4 screams desperation (but then, Hollywood never know when to quit until they ruin a good thing)

I won't use dreamboat Jake as a duvet, but I'll wrap under one with him *g*

Good weekend, everyone - the sun has come out and Jake probably out and about in London?

I can honestly see where someone might think they were related, because there's a certain vague resemblance in a familial way. But I never understood how anyone could mistake Jake for Tobey...or vice versa. I think there's a much stronger resemblance between Jake and early Jared Leto.

Your provocative post has caused me to pause and think about poor Jake and his career and his future.

In order for Jake to separate himself from the herd, so to speak, so that he never, ever again, is ever confused with, or mixed up with other actors, is to finally BE who he is.

Jake has yet to realize his full career potential because he will not confront and embrace his Inner Hunk. Instead, he runs away from it,performing in quirky, off-beat roles. He needs to take a look at the man in the mirror (Sorry Michael!) and realize what he has to work with.

Who knows. He might get nominated for an Oscar or a BAFTA or a Golden Globe, not for being meaningful, but for being hauntingly gorgeous, and incredibly sexy, and obssessively hot.

I have heard rumors that he has already secured these kinds of nominations. Incredibly, even the much coveted MTV award, but I hold with those that urge Jake to embrace the Sexy. He might get to work in a Judd Apatow movie!...:)

Hi Flower! The wait for Pop is a long one - my consolation for that one is it should be in the theatres a long time :D

Hey Winterbird :D Ooh good point about the height. And Jake is just a lot bigger - ahem... It is gorgeous here but it's very possible Jake is back in LA - sigh.

Hi Anon - I've not thought abut a comparison between Jake and Jared before :D

Honoured to have you with us, Baronness... :) I still think that there are times when Jake sees himself as that geek from school with the big glasses and I wonder if it's really hit him how incredibly, uniquely gorgeous he is. I want him to relish in his hotness but, in the meantime, he'll have to take comfort from securing nominations/awards for his amazing talent as an actor :D

Hope everyone's having a lovely day and enjoying some sunshine. I just got ack home and want to sit outside but I'm been distracted by the tennis :D

Good point Anon 'embrace his inner hunk'. He has so much potential and can't wait to see him in other blockbusters.

Speaking of hunks I've just had 4 firemen turn up in their firetruck at my house to check my smoke alarms. One even asked to try on my shoes!

Even more distracting I the tennis going on with Roddick and Blake. I just can't take my eyes off Blake and his incredible butt. I wish Jake were a tennis player. At least we'd see much more of him. What a fun afternoon.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ooh Sheba! That sounds like a treat :D Chuckling at the shoes... What an end to the tennis :(( Looking forward to the final tomorrow. I'd love to spend an afternoon watching Jake play tennis! Can't move round here without stumbling over a cricket match.

sheba said...

Oh no! Dang. Anyway isn't Blake gorgeous. And he's half British :D

Hi WDW we seem to be posting at the same time. Hope you're having a good day.

Its exciting in the run up to Wimbledon. I really hope to see my number one hunk over here watching The greats. BTW have you done a sporting post lately? And not just triathalon.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

A lovely day thanks!I've been at the gym this afternoon, wearing myself out spinning :D I've not done a sporting post for a while (except for the triathlon and a bit on cycling the other day). I do have an idea however.... I hope you're having a good day too!

What a creative, informative and entertaining post! Thank you WDW!

If Jake is really back in LA it is a very odd occurrence that he was in airports 6 TIMES via one trip with no pictures (LA, NYC, NYC, London, London, LA). That simply doesn't happen for him - usually during one or two or more of these airport departures/arrivals he would have been spotted and photographed. He is probably so happy about this!! Meanwhile we're all having withdrawals...LOL!!

All this Jake/Tobey/Donnie/Jared (God I love Jake and Jared together in Highway), etc. talk is getting me so pumped for the upcoming movie openings! I'm losing patience, however. I am seriously losing patience. :(

Have a good weekend everyone!

The trip to NYC was primarily for Reese's Avon job. It's possible they flew in courtesy of Avon on a private charter. Jake likely scheduled some meetings for the same time as well. Corporations most often use the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Columbus Circle, for their high profile business travellers, and that is where they stayed.

From there Jake went to London and Reese went home. Again, if Jake flew into London for Prince of Persia business, he might well have flown a private charter as well.

What I do find strange is that there is no evidence of him since. I cannot imagine him being in Paris, staying at a hotel and not getting tweeted. He may very well have gone back to the U.S. by now.
Someone allegedly saw him in the L.A. area yesterday, I believe.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks BBMISwear :-) That's a lot of airports and a lot of jetlag - no doubt Jake has been stocking up on the Rescue Remedy. But yes, shame on the airport paps! My patience is a little thin, too, but the films will come! Yes, within the next ten years, we will get another Jake film and then it'll all be so much we'll pass out in our theatre seats...

Hi Sherlock! Thanks for the interesting background. I still think Jake's visit to London was possibly more to see Maggie, Peter and Ramon than for PoP post-production, but he certainly gets about! I'm not a big fan of the idea of Jake in private jets and I like to think he doesn't do that too often. In our new Tweet world it is easier to get glimpses, but then it makes it all the more frustrating when Jake disappears again. It seems Jake may be in LA again, as you say. Where next! I'd love to see Jake heading for his new film set... :D

Have a good evening everyone!

I agree that Jake needs to embrace what he has to work with. A Jud Apatow movie? That would be great!
Somehow, though, I think "Prince of Persia" is a good vehicle for him. "Nailed" could have been a good romantic comedy, except that we may or may not ever see it :-(.
"Brothers" may have some good romantic potential; we'll know soon enough.

I personally don't care whether Jake wins any awards. He has good comedic and musical skills, which often are overlooked by the people who hand out awards. In the golden days of Hollywood, the people who excelled at dramatic roles were not more famous than the people who excelled at comedy. You take what you're good at, and make the most of it.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Paul :D If only we will get to see Jake's comic turn in Nailed. Jake does have all the talents - hopefully, at some point we may get to enjoy them again!
