Life in and behind the lens

Watching Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese leave Burn 60 this weekend (you can see the pap video here) to a cacophony of shutters reminds me that, despite the inconvenience and the craziness of some pap situations, Jake has had a largely good relationship with the camera for years - both in front of it and behind it. We all know about Jake's passion for cooking but, back in Teen People 2002, Jake's passion was listed as photography.

Jake described his 21st birthday to 17 magazine: 'During the day my mom threw me a party with my family and closest friends. At night my friends had a big party for me at a club in LA. My mom bought me this really old-school Palaroid camera. And I got a beautiful ring from a friend that says: It's important to live, not only to exist.' On recent visits to Europe, Jake has been seen camera in hand taking pictures of the sights, just like the rest of us.

Jake can also be relied upon to help out.

Of course, as an actor, Jake is well accustomed to performing in front of a camera and, as a particularly photogenic actor, he's also well used to posing in front of fashion and magazine photographers, including some of the very best. These include Mario Testino and Annie Leibovitz as well as Michael Stipe. The impact of the paparrazi on such photography is discussed here by Steffan Hill who has photographed Jake in the past.

Beautiful as Jake is, Ang Lee told the Advocate that he'd had some problems photographing Jake, in contrast to Heath Ledger: '“Jake positions himself this way, then that way. He tries everything—like De Niro or something,” Lee says, then cackles. “Heath is not like that. He has a specific target within him. I don’t have to bring him back from here or there. He’s also very easy to photograph, easier than Jake. You don’t have to avoid anything.”' One wonders what this 'thing' was that had to be avoided. Yet it is because Jake has such an interesting, animated and expressive face that one takes so much pleasure in looking at him.

Brokeback Mountain had a stills photographer, Kimberley French, who has the gift of melting into the background and being tolerated and liked and admired by actors. Her photography on the set - especially her images of Heath with whom she had a special connection - led to the instantly recognisable Brokeback poster.

'French met [Heath] on a movie set when he was visiting then-girlfriend Naomi Watts, and when they met again on the set of Brokeback the two instantly bonded over cameras and cigarettes. As a result, French was able to capture poignant photos of the actor. “It felt really great from the start, that I already had a relationship with one of the actors,” French muses. “And it just continued... Heath would let me get so close to his eyeline. Getting in an actor’s eyeline—between them and the camera or another actor, or whatever they think they’re looking at—is a big deal. He also later allowed me to shoot him while he was concentrating on his lines.”

'On one such occasion, when Ledger was pacing back and forth rehearsing a scene, French snapped an introspective portrait that was used in composite for the movie’s iconic poster. The other portion of the final image, featuring actor Jake Gyllenhaal, was taken during a special photography session that lasted all of five minutes. “I had very little time, so I had no lights, just reflectors,” she now laughs. “It’s nerve-wracking, but the job is totally about being fast.”'

Kimberley's images also feature in this video as background to an interview Heath did for an Australian radio station on 22 January 2006.

Nailed

A big thank you to Monica for finding more pictures from the set of Nailed. As with other photos we've seen from the set, it seems the actors and director were quite happy to have cameras around despite the strict ban. The photo of Jessica is interesting because it gives us a good look at the offending nail. Many thanks to the photographers for taking these pictures, which must keep us going until we get to see the finished article.

And finally and off topic...

I took my own camera out today for a trip to Blenheim Palace to have afternoon tea...

... to enjoy the scenery...

...and to pretend my other car is a porsche.

Including pictures from IHJ, links and WDW.

What a beautiful post today! I love your photos, WDW, especially the flower, is that a peony? Beautiful. Also, I have to say that is my favorite Jack Twist pic of all time, on the back of the truck. *thud*Jack I call it, the long legs, the beautiful profile. It's interesting to read about the photographers' thoughts behind the pictures of their subjects. Such a talent. Thanks! :)

I love the Nailed pics; Jake looks appropriately ethics questionable, but good. :)

Have a great day, all!

Hi there Anon :D Thanks so much - this was a very fun post to do. I'm afraid I don't know what the flower is, it was in the beautiful Rose Garden, such a stunning place and I loved how the lake was in the background.

That is an amazing pic of Jack Twist, he of the endless legs and such a beautiful expression. I was interested to hear what Kimberley had to say about taking these. Interesting that she only had a few minutes but she and Jake did perfectly.

I love the description 'ethics questionable' for Jake's Howard! Perfect. I love the pics.

I wish I had a name for you - thanks for commenting :D

I hope everyone had as lovely a day as I did :)

I just watched the video with the Kimberley French images of Heath, they are amazingly beautiful. Jake's expression in the photo is wonderful, a little sadness, and of course, the jeans and boots, and his hands. Is that TMI? lol ;)

Yes, I'm afraid it looks as though Howard will be ethically challenged, but irresistible. Must be that Cheshire Cat grin. :)

Not TMI at all! I know ust what you mean :D It is something though to compare here the soulful face of Jack Twist with the cheeky grin of Howard - I can't wait to meet Howard on the big screen :D

Damn, I could use such a ring right now... :(

How interesting to learn how Heath's part of the BBM poster was shot! I never realised that it was taken from the pic of Heath with the gloves...

Thank you, Monica, from me too, for finding those Nailed pics... I am sooo curious to see that movie!!! I love Jake's smile in the top one...

Oh, and thank you for the lovely pics from Blenheim Palace... Memories from last year!
It looks like you had a wonderful day there... Unfortunately all the Porsches remind me what lies ahead of me again next week... I am just glad there was no Porsche Cayenne - that would have just been too much... :P :D :D

I am sorry to hear about your YouTube channel... You would think they should be glad about more people seeing their trailer - but instead they delete it everywhere... :-/

I hope everybody will have a good week! :)

((((Uli)))) I know you're having very hard weeks - I hope there's an end in sight to all this travelling :(( There was every type of porsche under the sun - although I mainly know them by colour... Strangely there was also a gun display, with someone shooting guns from every period - including the cowboy bison hunting gun - I thought it was an odd mix with porsches :D

I had no idea the poster came from that picture either. I was so interested to read about it.

I'm watching Top Gear and Clarkson is being told about his appearance in the Heat's sexiest guys!

I hope next week is better for you, Uli *)

Very nice post, WDW. Thank you for the video , it had a couple of pictures I had never seen and it`s always a pleasure to hear Heath`s voice.

That pic of Jake taking a picture of Kirsten with the two men always makes me smile. They had no idea who he was did they? :)

Your pictures of Blenheim Palace are beautiful, especially the one with the lake.

I hope we get to see Nailed soon, not just pictures but that hair is just horrible. :D

Morning! Monday - blagh...

Hi there Gretchen :D Yep, a Brokeback Sunday. I hope you had a good weekend.

I'm playing catch-up again after another very busy weekend. It was so good to see new pics...he is really Lookin' Good :-)

Oh to know what is in that script!! And that Joe Namath project still being talked about...I wish they would hurry up and get that together already. Everything in Hollywood takes so long. *heavy sigh*

Wonderful post on Sunday, WDW! Love all the BBM stuff (of course) and your pictures are beautiful (even if you didn't have Jack and Ennis to photograph like Kimberly French did)! We make the best with what we have to work with, huh?!

Big thank yous to Monica for finding those Nailed pics! That little hair piece in front makes me crazy - and not just in an "OMG that looks so horrendous" way...LOL! If it wasn't for that hair piece he never would have said to me "Feel this! It's all hard!" and I could have never said "I'd rather feel this" while stroking his REAL hair!

*THUD* *passes out*

Okay...I'm back...that memory does some weird stuff to me...still. *heavy sigh*

I guess I should say have a good day now since I'm starting to ramble and probably not going to make much sense from this point on! But I will say that more times than not I figure we may never see the end result of Nailed. But every once in a while (like when seeing pics like these) I think maybe we just might...some day. *sick of waiting*

Well off to another very busy day...it was nice being here with my morning tea! Have a good day!

:-)

Hello WDW, very interesting and lovely post. Just had a horrible hard day full of herding cats (you know, other people) and got back to my desk and able to look at this post. I remembered Kimberley French's site was where I found that second BBM cast pic.
Hi BBMISwear - I love reading your story about the hairpiece and the hair stroking. Sigh.

:) That's a great memory to have of your set visit with him. Lucky lady!

Hi there everyone - a day with computer access so I missed you all :)

Hi BBMISwear! How I love to hear you talk about that day - and the stroking of the hair was so amazing!! I go all dreamy-eyed and vacant when I think on it.

Everything does take so long! We hear of all these movie roles and then it goes so quiet on them. Although I think Love and Other Drugs may be different. :-)

Hey TD :D I'm glad you liked the post after all that herding cats - I've been doing some of that myself as well today...

Hi Anon - she certainly is!

Thanks for the background info between that photographer and Heath. It just showed what a generous spirit he had.

I wonder what that thing Ang spoke about when it came to photographing Jake. (I know he said he had an oddly shaped head, that was the problem with getting a hat that fit well on him)
