Donnie Darko - 'the perfect teen movie'

Another old interview tonight - this time, from the Erie Times back in 2001, it's the time of Donnie Darko and that ever relevant, always constant question of 'Donnie Darko? What's that about then?' While Jake Gyllenhaal makes it clear that no-one on set really had much of an idea, including Donnie himself, when all is said and done, it tells the tale of the reality of life. Sort of. And it's about your typical teen. Sort of.

'Ask actor Jake Gyllenhaal to describe his latest film, "Donnie Darko," and he gets straight to the point. "Every single person who worked on it, including the writer-director himself, has no idea what it's really about -- and that's probably the perfect reason for someone to go and see it," he said. Gyllenhaal, who plays the title character, is only half-joking. "It really is impossible to come up with any neat description that covers all the bases," he adds, "but I think that's its strength. There's so much going on."'

'Donnie, an extremely bright student who has the usual teen-age problems -- with authority, with his parents, with girls -- along with a few highly unusual ones: he sleepwalks, he has hallucinations and he's being followed around by Frank, an eerie, demonic presence. Yet these are the least of his troubles. He's also trying to make sense of the terrifying world around him -- a 1980s reality besotted by pop culture, material excess, fundamentalism, encroaching cynicism, prescription drugs and hypocrisy. "In that sense, I think it's the perfect teen movie," says Gyllenhaal. "It's all about what growing up is really about -- all the delusions and illusions and hallucinations of that whole experience. Can I walk through that wall? Can I time travel? It's about the realization that everything is different from what you've been told it is by your parents, or school or society, and now it's up to you to decide the reality of world around you and how to deal with it."'

'As Donnie begins to explore what it means to still be alive, and then to be in love, he uncovers secrets of the universe that give him a power to alter time and destiny. Or does he? "For me, what's so interesting and appealing about this film is that it's all left ambiguous and open," Gyllenhaal said. "We all actually had a lot of discussions about the nature of time and the possibility of time travel, and when I first met Richard I'd just been reading a lot of philosophy like Plato and Kierkegaard, and also people like Freud and Jung, so it was really on my mind... But as soon as we began filming there was a conscious move away from thinking about anything in intellectual terms," he notes. "And it was the same with my role and trying to get inside the character of Donnie. Once we had the script in shape, it was all instinctual, and I never tried to analyze Donnie. I just went with it, and the material never failed me."'

Jake went where Richard Kelly led: "He was humble, a quality you don't often see in young first-time directors... He was open to changing anything, including lines, to make the film better. In fact we shot a much longer film, but a lot of great stuff had to be cut in the end." The film also features a strong ensemble cast that includes Drew Barrymore as a sensitive English teacher, Katherine Ross as Donnie's therapist, Noah Wyle as his science teacher and Patrick Swayze as a sleazy fundamentalist preacher. "I was just in awe of all these actors and what they did with their roles," adds Gyllenhaal. "The film may be called 'Donnie Darko' and center on my character, but they really root it in the reality of everyday life and family, and that's what makes it work for me. Yes, it deals with some pretty wild ideas, but ultimately it's about how people relate to each other."'

A WDW Interlude

I have two big interests in my life. The first I think you can guess, the second is natural history and the world about us. Today I met a British wildlife photographer and programme maker who has been an inspiration to me for many years. Brits may know Simon King from Spring/Autumn Watch and the Big Cat Diaries but these programmes comprise a fraction of a fascinating life and career behind the lens. It was a thrill for me, so I'm afraid a picture follows.

I thought I'd take a plunge into the tweeting pool. You can find me here and on the sidebar, looking for fellow Jakers to follow.

Includes pictures from IHJ and WDW.

Ahh Simon K, a long fixture in my TV life. I love Big Cat.
What is wrong with instinctive? Its a nice, different word, bit of an edge, says what it means. Why does everyone say instinctual? ugly ugly word.
Hiya!

Hey TD! I love love Simon King :D I watched him on TV when we were both whippersnappers :)

Instinctual is one of those words that we don't use here and it does sound odd (well... made up!) to our ears. I love the differences in English I wonder how Jake got on with PoP filming with picking up English expressions :D

Wow, WDW, congrats on meeting Simon King! Great post about Jake's thoughts on Donny too, I haven't watched it in awhile. I love language too. :)

My word is woortava, sounds like an exotic big cat or animal. :)

great post!featuring my boyfriend Donnie. :3
i love Donnie Darko so much.my first encounter with Jake.after checking out his imdb page i raided the video store nearby and rented October Sky,Bubble Boy and Moonlight Mile.that was 2003, i was in high school.me and my friend had discussed the movie the whole week.good times.wow it's been long.no one knew him then.i mean no one.i'd get blank looks when i mentioned his name.even after repeating his last name cause no one would understand it at first....

Jake was brilliant in DD.just as good as in BBM.imo.

i didn't understand at all when i first watched it but still loved it.and that never happens.i think Jake is right.it can be what you want it to be.teen angst,sci-fi/fantasy,black comedy, superhero movie, suburbia film, period piece, family drama even horror (because Frank is f*cking scary).i have my own ideas/interpretation but this comment is long enough already.so maybe some other time.

and congrats on meeting someone you admire WDW. :)

Good morning everyone! Friday at last :D

Hey Pia! Great to see you :D Yes, my bear's doing great and he says hello to your bear. I've almost got him housetrained now...

Thanks so much, Gretchen! I'm really pleased you liked the post so much. I didn't realise you were such a big Donnie fan - I'll bear that in mind :)

Donnie Darko is the film that I have discussed the most with my non Jake/BBM friends.Jake deserves so much kudos for what he did with that role - he IS Donnie Darko. I didn't get close to understanding it for a long time. Now, when I watch it, I focus on its atmosphere, the beauty of it all, the music, the cinematography and Jake's fine, fine acting. Fortunately, DDarko was very popular in the UK and so I've never found a shortage of people to mull it over with. I'm so proud of Jake for Donnie. Thanks for that comment :)

Have a great day everyone - it's so beautiful today :D

Hey WDW,so pleased for you about Simon King. And great pic - it's good to "see" you again :) Also love your twitter avatar;) Good to know a Jake teddy isn't just for Christmas :)

"it's so beautiful today"

It's a Beautiful Day for me alright - I'm off to Wem-ber-lee soon to see U2!!!! :D

Love and hugs to anyone who remembers me xxx

My spooky twin!!! Just wonderful to see you, TL :DDD I hope you and TL Jr are doing good xx Good old Jake Ted - he's bringing out old friends. Yeah, not just for Christmas, he's for keeps :D I hope you have your Jake Ted safe :)

Have a fantastic time with Bono and the boys. How I wish I was going too. And you have a gorgeous day for it. Love to you, TL xx

Don't worry, I still have my Jake Ted (and a few other people's!) safely tucked away. Wish I could say the same about the real Jake... Oh well, not long til Brothers is out (touch wood).
I wish Jake was over here, cos we know he's a U2 fan and I've been harbouring a little fantasy that he would go along to Wembley and Bono would bring him up on stage, what with the Brothers connection, but it's not to be this time :( Oh well, I would probably faint on the spot if I saw Bono and Jake on the same stage together. Not that I'd be able to see anything from where I'll be standing, they'll look like ants on a picnic cloth (to borrow a phrase ;)
Anyway, gotta go and get ready now. Speak soon xx

What a wonderful picture! Thank you for sharing! (Although I'll confess I don't know who this man is but it sounds like he has quite the following).

I haven't read any of the DD stuff in this post...I am getting more and more aggravated with the way this week is going by the minute. But...my plan for this Sunday is to go back and read every word of every WDW post since last Friday which was the last time I really "read" WDW (and other stuff on line) and didn't just look at pictures! Damn it's been crazy. I am having withdrawals from all this stuff I love so much. (But I must say even without words it's been a great week for pictures as everyone here already knows)!! I will fix it all this on Sunday (either with a big cup of tea if it's day time or a big goblet of wine if it's night time - hee hee)!

The DD talk did make me think of something to remind you about WDW...don't forget to watch Moonlight Mile this weekend...whoooowheeeee!!

Okay...I'm rambling...back to work...I'll be back on Sunday so be warned!

:-)

Glad to hear the Jake Teds are safe and well-fed and watered, TL :D I know just what you mean about the concert. When Rubes and I saw Rufus Wainwright a couple of weeks after Jake was on stage with him it was so, so weird! Jake would love to see U2 in London I'm sure. I'll be thinking of you xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Yeay BBMISwear! Posting at the same time :D I'm glad you liked the pic - not many people know who he is here, except if they're into watching critters on the telly :)

I know you're having a tough old week :) It's great you can pop by. The posts aren't going anywhere, so I hope you enjoy catching up.

Don't you worry, I'm Moonlighting this weekend! Both the movie itself and then with the commentary :D See you later :-)

Isn't it funny, I fell right into Darko-land with no problem, found meaning and symbolism in everything, loved the music, everything. I lean toward the side of Donnie not being messed up, that it was real for him, that he did save his little corner of the world. What does that say about my mind, I wonder. ;) Although BBM is still my favorite movie, fast becoming my favorite movie evah, I loved DD. Can't wait for Jake's new films either. He'll be Namath to a T. ;)

Hi there 13:36! That's great you're seeing U2 in LA. If Jake's not there you can bet he wishes he were. Have a good time.

That's the side I lean to too, 13:42 :D Most definitely. I think Donnie does save his part of theworld - I love how you put that. BBM is the film that changed my life, but DDarko is hugely special. I can't wait to see the coming films too. We are in for treats!

I hope everyone's having a lovely day :)

WDW, you look fabulous!!!

Sorry I don't know Simon K but you look great next to him. :)

I am loving all the Jake stuff going on. Great to hear Doug Liman really has Jake in mind for his movie, adore the sightings and such.

DD is always a perfect teen movie to me.

Have a great weekend everyone. Lovely to see some folks who haven't posted in a while back here. *Waves to Pia and TL!* :D

Donnie Darko was one of those movies that even after watching it several times can still be confusing.

Simon King huh? Well I'll have you know I am a BIG cat diary fan. It must have been such an incredible experience to study those big cats. I'm so happy you met him. I wonder if they are still doing Big Cat diary?

Thanks Get Real!

I've been loving all this UMP stuff too - it's fun to see some life being breathed into this again.

It's so great to see Pia and TL here again :D I hope you're having a good day too. The weekend has now arrived here thank heavens :)

Hi Sweetpea! Someone asked Simon if the Cat Diaries were running again this year and I think I overheard him say no, which is a real shame.

The opening scene of "Donnie Darko" is breathtakingly beautiful, though it seems odd that the first thing you see is Jake Gyllenhaal sleeping in the middle of a road. Well, what would *you* do if you came across that while driving to work some morning? ;-)

It's almost like River Phoenix sleeping on a road in "My Own Private Idaho, except that that was the weirdest part of that movie, and whehn Jake does the same thing, it's almost the *least* weird thing about "Donnie Darko."
