Jake Gyllenhaal: 'I am a fan of the unresolved cadence' - goofiness, snakes and having fun

Jake Gyllenhaal is now, at least for the moment, off Martha's Vineyard and is back in Philly indulging in his regular sport: eating in every restaurant a city has to offer before trying to get from said restaurant to vehicle in less time than anyone can utter those immortal words - 'say cheese!'

One definitely gets the impression that Philly's The Insider is enjoying having all these stars in its midst. Today it reports: 'Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal chose not to walk the line Friday night after having sushi at Morimoto on Chestnut Street. They left out a back door and hailed a cab to take them a block to their SUV's parking space, reports photog HughE Dillon, who saw her as the cab zipped past the restaurant. Thursday night, the couple did the steak scene at Butcher & Singer at 15th and Walnut Streets.' As I have wondered so many times over the years: For someone who likes to cook, Jake sure does eat out a lot.

With Jake continuing to avoid cameras it means we must entertain ourselves again. Tonight, I thought I'd take a look at one of the many reasons for Jake's wide appeal to audiences and people general - that loveable quality of his, Jake's goofiness. From Bubble Boy and This Is Our Youth onwards, Jake has been described as goofy by co-stars and critics alike, and almost every single time it is said with the utmost affection and love for the actor and person who never finds it hard to entertain fans and those around him. With a word, with an expression, with a laugh. With a giggle.

Way back when, Kirsten Dunst said of Jake: 'Talent is such a turn-on. If he looked the way he does when and was a bad actor and not a nice person, I wouldn't be into him. He's just smart, thoughtful, goofy, sweet and not trying to be somebody he's not.'

Emmy Rossum, Jake's lucky co-star in The Day After Tomorrow, recalled of Jake: 'He’s a fantastic guy. He’s very intelligent. It was funny because I was kind of like the only girl on the set. There was Mark Gordon, our producer, Roland, Jake, Dennis Quaid and me. So, he’s like the big brother I never had. So it was really nice. We also work in kind of a similar way. We both put a lot of emphasis on preparation but then we get there and we kind of let it rip and are intuitive in a lot of ways within the bounds of the character and the arc. I think we work really well together.' [Q: Is there a side to Jake that we don’t normally see on screen that’s different about him? Does he pull pranks?] 'He’s quite goofy in reality. I think we were so cold and wet and shivering most of the time that nobody had enough energy to pull pranks after running through that tank 500 times in one day with Roland going ‘do it again’! But he’s very much positive. He has a lot of positive energy.' [Q: So nobody gets that he’s really goofy unless you’re around him.] 'Yeah. Then you’ll get it.'

This reminds me of a review of Jarhead: 'If there's anything stranger than the sight of an oil-slicked horse roaming the desert by the hellish red fires of burning oil fields, it's the casting of Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard as uneasy buddies in the sandy trenches. With their heads shaved military style, they're reduced to acting mostly with their eyes. And they both have great eyes - just not the kind you expect to find among the gung-ho Marines, or "jarheads." Gyllenhaal ("Proof") has soft, goofy eyes, like a shy teen, and Sarsgaard ("Flightplan") has the hooded, keen eyes of a white-collar criminal.' I cherish this description of Peter.

As befits a post that celebrates one particularly adorable aspect of Jake Gyllenhaal, here is a classic peace of Gyllenspeak - referring to Zodiac: '"You know, David said about this movie, it's sort of that you can walk around in a forest and there's a killer snake, and you can live your life in fear of that," he says. "Or you can find the snake. You don't have to kill it, but now you know, okay, I found it, now I don't have to go in that corner and get bitten all the time. And, not to get too abstract about it, but it's that dangerous myth of resolution again, that idea that you go in and slay it and now it's over and you don't need to think about it anymore. Instead of saying, okay, I have to face this and deal with it, whether it's the idea of competition or whatever."'

It seems wrong to quote this particular statement of Jake's without looking at other things that he said in the same wonderful interview (with the Star Tribune in 2007). ''I am a fan," Jake Gyllenhaal says with a slow grin, "of the unresolved cadence."... "I hadn't even realized that until now," he says about his work. "But I guess I feel the idea of resolution is kind of a figment of our imagination, and a myth that more modern filmmakers are trying to dissuade us from. So I suppose I am drawn to the sort of movies that have another angle on the world. Or, if they do leave you with a resolution, leave you with one you've never seen before."'

Of choosing to do the non-serious and goofy TDAT: 'But my instinct takes me to funny places, and fascinating places, and `The Day After Tomorrow' was my instinct taking me someplace I really enjoyed. There are choices you make that people are always going to say you shouldn't have done, but they lead to the other movies you do, so, you know, you should have done them. You had to.'

'"If people want to say I'm brave for doing `Brokeback Mountain,' hey, I'll take the credit," Gyllenhaal says now with a smile. "But bravery is about not wanting to do something and doing it anyway. A story that feels new, that feels alive, with a director at the helm who you know is going to steer the ship in a fascinating, beautiful direction - I always wanted to do a movie like that... I do think it's weird that some people have a problem watching actors having sex on screen but not watching them slaughter thousands of people," Gyllenhaal says. "I think that's a very odd thing. . . . But there are always choices in a career. And maybe sometimes you want to be the guy who slaughters thousands of people, and is a badass and all that stuff. And sometimes it's just better to get on a horse and do a movie with Heath Ledger where you have some explicit love scenes."'

'"I've known Jake for a long time," says "Zodiac" co-star Mark Ruffalo, "and it was fun to see him really kind of stretch his wings with somebody like David Fincher. They were tough scenes and they took a lot of building, but I'm really happy with it. I think it's a really wonderful performance from him, one of his best. As much as he was put through the wringer, I think it really paid off." "Yeah, we did tons of takes, and it wasn't always easy, and at the time I claimed that I wasn't the kind of actor who could do that," Gyllenhaal admits. "But I learned from David. And I talked to him the other day and he's so kind to me, and he said, `Now you know you can do anything if you put your mind to it.' And the fact that he said that to me - I mean, he's a really tough critic. And after all we've been through? I'm just amazed that somebody like that would say something like that, to me. It's very cool."

'"The opportunity to be young in the business and to be open to learning a lesson from someone like David Fincher, or Ang Lee, or Sam Mendes?" Gyllenhaal marvels aloud. "I just have a tremendous respect for them, and maybe that comes from my dad being a director and maybe it just comes from knowing the process of filmmaking, but it's just exciting to be a part of their visions. This might sound weird coming from an actor, but that's more interesting to me than the performances I give. I don't know that I'm good enough yet to move a mediocre story to a better place. But I know I can help a great story along. And that," he says with a smile, "is one thing I've resolved."'

hee... the pic of Jale in front of the mic? I thought his eyes couldn't get any bigger! :P

i love goofy Jake! it's refreshing and rare for a good looking guy not to take all these too seriously, that he's willing to look silly to charm or make people laugh.

what a lovely post :)

I know, Winterbird, jake's eyes are ginormous!

I'm so glad you liked the post. I had so much fun doing it, and I was laughing while I did it. This is the Jake that I adore very much. And some of the things he says! They're so out of nowhere, but I could listen to them for hours. Jake manages to combine seriousness with a big sense of mischief and fun. A perfect combination, and it makes me smile and laugh :)

'My instinct takes me to funny places'

How I love that line of Jake's :)

Hi!! I am too tired to leave a long comment :( Just wanted to show a sign of life and tell you that I enjoyed reading the post tonight (DUH! I always enjoy reading your posts...).
Although at some of Jake's quotes I was like "Huh?", but I guess that's to be expected... The Gyllenspeak... I wonder if Jake also sometimes goes "Huh?" when he finished a sentence,LOL!

And I guess now I am chased inside from my balcony by complete darkness and lightning...

Have a lovely evening everyone!!!!

Uli! So good to see you - I do think about you when you're off travelling with work. Glad you get the chance to say hi :D

I sometimes marvel at how Jake can finish one of these sentences and/or paragraphs! I don't know how he keeps the train of thought for several sentences. Snakes in the forest?

There's an owl outside my window...

Uli said...

LOL, you think he actually DOES keep his train of thought??

Jake, don't worry, we love you - even when your train ends up in the wrong station... Or especially when?

hmmm... how much chocolate?

Hi Uli, good to see you.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I don't know, Uli, but he seemed to carry that snake conceit throughn to some kind of conclusion. The cadences and resolution thing was a bit odd though! We do love you, Jake, even when you're playing a ukelele. Uli, your avatar surely fits this post!

It depends on its cocoa content, Rubes, but I'll send it across anyhow *)

That was a fantastic post, WDW! So much fun! Charming, goofy Jake is my favorite Jake.

Do you think Jake realizes that he has a tendency to say incoherent and weird things in interviews? I hope he never changes, it's so entertaining. :D

I love your picture selection for this post. The big version of the second one is so beautiful, I love the crinkle around his eyes when he smiles. The one with Kirsten is one of my favorite of the two of them, it's hilarious and I've seen it captionned many times. In fact that whole series of them is great. And what can I say about that series with Ang? I can't look at these pics without laughing out loud. Jake looks extra goofy when he's tipsy and very affectionate. :D

Peter has the eyes of a white- collar criminal?! Is that supposed to be a compliment?

I hope everybody's having a nice week-end, the weather here is fantastic, we're finally having more than two days in a row of hot weather and sun. Yay!

I think Jake could have a very zen conversation with Ang Li, if they haven't had one already. :)

Hi Uli!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks so much, Olympia! What a nice thing to say *) I'm glad it read as fun, because that's what it was like writing it. And I love Jake's mix of earnestness and silliness - he must know he talks like this on occasion. I can imagine Peter laughing right at him, and Jake would laugh along too. preposterous but very loveable :)

I enjoyed selecting the pics too. And there were quite a few to choose from but these are all favourites. The picture with Kirsten is one of my favourites too and I've re-enacted it with Rubes and Nouskie at the same table! Oh God if anyone saw us....

The Peter comment was hysterical - I don't know what those eyes are supposed to look like, or if Peter has them, but what a thing to say!

It was supposed to be sunny here today but it wasn't, but that gave me more time to do the post so it worked out in the end :D I'm glad it's good for you!

Hey Winterbird, I bet Jake and Ang have had some very zen conversations over a bottle of red!

i ♥ this post.made me lol so much.

the pic with Kirsten begs for a cap.
"hooded eyes" yes!that's the word i kept thinking about but couldn't come up with.i mean Peter's of course.

oh god that snakes in the forest talk is just hilariously cute.and how in the end he gives up with "whatever."ilhsfm.
and you know that's so true with the resolution thing.i hadn't realized that before but yea he's right.

it's just better to get on a horse and do a movie with Heath Ledger where you have some explicit love scenes
YES!!!I WISH THEY COULD'VE DONE A DOZEN OF THOSE MOVIES ;_; *sob*

I don't know that I'm good enough yet to move a mediocre story to a better place. But I know I can help a great story along. And that," he says with a smile, "is one thing I've resolved."'
aw that is so sweet and .such a humble thing to say.he's so earnest and endearing.i want to squeeze him.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

What a great comment, thanks, Gretchen! I don't know if it's the dark, milk and white chcolate bundle that Ruby just sent me, but this post and the comments have had me smiling for hours now!

Some of the things Jake says are so out there, but then you stop and think, and, yes, the resolution thing is true. How Jake must think as he works through a role. I'd love him to write about this properly. I was drawn to Jake because of his acting instinct and skill and I would love to know more about how he processes this in his head as it's certainly complicated!

And yes so many times for the Heath comment.

Jake's closing statement is so humble and modest. Heartfelt. And yet Jake proves himself above and beyond that with each film. We need another new film!

Jake has been described as goofy before. I can only wonder what he was like in school, probably the class clown.

In one pic (the one where he's looking over at Heath, cause I know Heath was sitting on his right during that BBM press junket) he reminded me of a pic I saw today of Joe Namath. I wonder if Jake is indeed going to be Joe Namath in the movie?

He sure does like to eat out a lot. I guess he only cooks when he's at home. I wonder if he and Chris hooked up while he was in MV?

thanks for the article

Hi Sweetpea! Jake seems to have been described as goofy regularly through the years. He clearly likes to entertain. I think Jake will ventually play Namath - I just wonder when! t's nice to think of Jake meeting up with Chris on MV :)

Good night, wet dark!
A great and wonderful post!

I loved all the quotes, especially on David Fincher.
Jake worked with great directors and I want him working with other great directors(Scorsese, Nolan, Mann, Allen,...). But I still hope a partnership with David Fincher.

And sometimes it's just better to get on a horse and do a movie with Heath Ledger where you have some explicit love scenes.

I always dreamed to see these two working together again. But I'm happy that they worked together in the best film.

request in return for chocolate.
Today has chocolate cake here in my house! My favorite!

A fun post today. I love this Jake too. :)

Some random thoughts.....

--I like goofy jake, too. I like him *because* he can be goofy. I just wish his goofiness was on camera, and not between scenes.

--I went to see "Time-Traveler's Wife," starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams today. Jake did a very good job of *not* being in this movie (I checked every scene carefully to make sure).

--The only Jake link in "Time-Traveler's Wife" was Brooklyn Proulx, who played Claire at age six. She was also in "Brokeback Mountain."

--It's probably easier for Jake to eat at a restaurant than cook meals when he's away from home. He may even have friends in the restaurant business. For all we know, his restaurant friends ask him what the competition is doing, and suggest dishes that he might sample.

Good morning everyone! And the sun is out :)

Thanks Monica! Like you, I love to hear about Jake and Fincher and I think it was a huge learning curve for Jake. And what a job he did! Amazing. I have a 'thing' for Fincher and I would love to see him work with Jake again.

I love what you say about Jake and Heath working together on the best film :D

I hope you enjoyed your chocolate birthday cake and that you had a wonderful day xx

Thanks about the Channel - OMG what a job!

Thanks Anon!

Hi there Paul :D Did you like the Time-Traveler's Wife? I loved the book and I worry that the film will be a major let dowb (not least because it has Eric Bana in it). What was it like?

I like the idea of Jake's restaurant pals asking him to suss out the competition!

Have a good day everyone!

Hi, WDW.

I thought "Time-Traveler's wide" was a good movie because of the casting. This was a good role for Eric Bana to play, with his wide-open eyes and totally innocent-looking face. Things happen to him, and he can only try to go with the flow. That's how Henry De Tamble has to live. Every actor has maybe one great role in him. This may be it for Bana. So, don't think of him as a problem in this particular movie. :-) He was all wrong for Henry the Eighth in "The other Boleyn Girl." He wasn't bad in "Funny People," though perhaps any number of other people could have done as well or better. Same with the role of Nero in "Star Trek." With "Time-Traveler's Wife," though, you have a main character who has to do some unsavory things like breaking into shops in order to steal clothes. If your actor projected any kind of meanness, it wouldn't be plausible that Clair would love or even trust him. But with Eric Bana in the role, you can see this sweet, innocent guy who is a victim of a very strange disorder. Why wouldn't good-hearted Clair want to help him and love him? I think it's the best role Bana has ever had (of those that I've seen, anyway), and it benefits the movie as well. :-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! Thanks so much for your opinion of TT's Wife. I have most definitely been put off Bana of late and I was disappointed to hear he was the actor in this film. But you've persuaded me that this could be his film and I should give him a chance. I love this story. I was going to see this or Glorious Basterds today but I got a migraine instead so they'll both have to wait for a day or two.

I hope everyone's having a good Sunday :)

If you happen to wonder from where Jake has got his goofyness, maybe here is the answer; not a month ago his newly divorced father started his own official homepage: http://stephengyllenhaal.net/

He is using his webcamera to spread around various ideas. He is giving some of the background to "Homegrown", he is reading his own poetry, rather prorockative etc. The latest is a strip of Sunset Blvd in Hollywood.

You get a list of all his work for TV and the silver screen.

Well worth viewing.
