Interview and Marie Claire scans - The Gyllenhaals and Natalie Portman

After some complicated contortionism with a scanner and an overlarge magazine, I've managed to post here the text section of Jake Gyllenhaal's interview with Natalie Portman from the September issue of Interview. As with Maggie's interview in Marie Claire below, click on the pages and you'll be able to read them. The Interview scans aren't pretty - neither was the sight of me curled under my desk scanning them - but hopefully they'll give you some idea...

Maggie Gyllenhaal is also in the magazines - Away We Go opens in the UK on 18 September and to mark the release Maggie makes a striking cover girl for October's edition of Marie Claire. See below for quotes about Jake and Heath Ledger.

On whether Jake and Maggie have undergone 'a tangible shift in their relationship' and how he is coping with all the attention: 'Of course, everybody does change as they grow up,' she answers carefully, 'but I think it's really hard for him, that stuff. It's hard for anyone who has to figure out a way to manage it. Like in Los Angeles, I don't always know where to avoid going - sometimes you just walk into a paparazzi nest. I get so angry, really upset,' she says protectively, her voice flaring a little. 'They chase him in their car and it's just different for him. More than anything I feel sorry for him that he has to deal with that.'

Of Heath: 'She falls quiet before she talks of him. 'I worked with him very little... but he was great, really alive. I have the feeling that he was just coming into his own, feeling that his point of view about things was really worth fighting for. He was just so free... There are very few people who are free and powerful and it isn't about vanity, and he was just starting to touch on that vein. I think that's what was so sad about him dying. What would have happened to him? What would he have done? Would he have gone on to be this really powerful actor.'

I like to think of Maggie, Peter and Ramona spending a holiday in the beautiful county of Somerset.

No problem, Gretchen! Sorry they're a bit rough and ready, it's a bloody hard mag to scan! Maggie does look stunning.

Maggie is such a class act! I love her. I really enjoyed reading the Natalie Portman interview, too. What I loved about Jake, is how artfully he created a safe space for her to talk. The tone was warm and conversational, and really did show Natalie off well. She's a very intelligent, down to earth person, at least with him. Jake has a really effective interviewing technique.

I forgot. It's obviously difficult for Maggie to talk about Heath. I suppose she anticipated such a question from a journalist, and thought about how she'd answer it. She seemed very protective of Heath, just as she is for her brother. It had to have been awkward. The journalist was doing a job, but anyone with a shred of decency would have felt it was intrusive.

Hi there everyone! Suffering from jetlagzombieitis... :(

Hi 23:55! She does indeed :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the interviews, 3:18 :D I thought Jake's questions were very intriguing and revealing for both him and Natalie. I wonder how difficult it was for him to think of them. I think probably not difficult. I also think Natalie would always respond well to such an old friend like Jake.

I agree that those questions would not be easy for Maggie - it would be better if the interviewers could focus their attention on her (and lovely Peter of course!) :D

I liked the interviews. I agree the Jake and Natalie interview was revealing to me, too. I think they are very close and a couple of times I even thought she was flirting with him. Actually more than a couple.

I think Maggie Gyllenhaal is really pretty. There's people who say she isn't, but I think she is very very pretty in a very unique way. No one looks like Maggie. She sounds really happy too. I hope they will have more kids. I think MAggie's Peter is hot. He is a really good actor. I never saw him in a movie where he wasn't good even if the movie wasn't so good.

Hi there Danuta! I do agree that Natalie and Jake have some pretty good chemistry going on there and have done for years. Jake was the perfect choice to interview her, quite aside from co-starring in Brothers.

Maggie is very definitely uniquely pretty and very striking and interesting to look at. Peter is such a talent (and hot!). Thanks for commenting :D

Maggie has a lot of poise and self-confidence. You also get a sense that she could put her foot down if she wanted to.

I mnight also note that there is a picture of Maggie on the desktop on my computer at work. It's that photoshoot in which she has her arm outstretched, and the edges of her hair are curling around her arm. She looks playful and alluring, and the color on her lips is cherry red. It amazes me that her various photoshoots have given her so many different looks, and she has pulled off pretty much every one of them. How many people can be so versatile?

I honestly don't know what life is like for Jake. If Maggie is right, then having the paparazzi around so much must sap his energy and make him frustrated at times. (We must never let him know what we think of his socks, hats, shirts, jeans, or he'll get self-conscious ;-))

I am very glad Jake and Reese have that farm or ranch or whatever in Ojai where they can be left undisturbed 99% of the time.
Paulh aren't you the person who went to a poetry reading or something once and met all of them?

Maggie looks great and she's a really talented actress. I liked what she said about Heath.
Jake should move away from L.A. and move to Brooklyn. Much less papazazzi there. :D

Hi Paul :D I know the picture you mean. Maggie suits cherry red like no other actress I can think of :) No, we need Jake to know what we think of his hats and socks!! (and overly baggy jeans...)

Hi Danuta :) Fortunately, as we know from the long gaps between pictures, Jake can avoid the paps in quite a few cities. Even when he's in LA, pap central. I think that the paps are more interested to picture Jake with Reese.

Hi there JakeFan :D I ado agree about Maggie. I think Jake should move to Oxfordshire, England. No paps there, I hear...
