September's issue of Interview magazine reached the shelves today in the US and, in a classic case of never mind the answers what about the questions, I have been fascinated by Jake Gyllenhaal's enigmatic interrogation of Natalie Portman, an actress he knows well. Some of the interview we have seen previewed before, but in the additional section, there is a quote that made me sit up in my Legal Seafoods seat. This quote of Jake's may well be in my top 5, my top 2 quotes even.
'Well, I think for the Prince of Persia, I just practiced ass-kicking ... [Portman laughs] But I do think that it's the job of an artist to not just mimic but also empathize - and in that process of empathizing give people a little bit of a rest from what's going on in their lives. And I think that's only possible when the artist, as a person, is really connecting with what's happening in the world. That's something that I can definitely see in your work. I also think that part of the job is to give people a break from the amazingly hard work that they all do. People need to laugh, people need to have fun, and so I think that's the real work. As an actor, you're taking yourself way too seriously if you're like "I'm only going to make films about the current state of the world,"'
If ever I have a quote sewn on my pillow it'll be that one - even if I need a really big pillow, it'll be worth every stitch.
Elsewhere in the interview and previously unquoted: 'The irony I've found in traveling for work is that meeting people and learning about their experiences has often been more interesting to me than even the work itself. I mean, at best, we actors have the opportunity to meet people who are doing real things, and then we get to tell a story that incorporates elements of their lives, and I think that is incredibly important. But, ultimately, what I've found in my life - what I feel gives life some meaning - are the experiences that I've had when I've done research for roles.'
And Jake's response to Natalie calling Jake 'a very special man'? 'You think so? Thank you. That's very nice.'
Today has been a very special day for me. Why? Because I sat in the Green Monster, that's why! From there, I could see Jake's view of the Park, seeing the graffiti in the monster, seen the marks ('They're never called dents', said the guide) from the home run balls and had a feel for what it's like when the Red Sox belt them out to the far reaches of the Park. The guide told us always to wear a glove in the Monster and he listed off the injuries to fingers, hands and heads as people stretch for the ball in the passion of the moment - just remember Jake on the Conan O'Brien Show.
The view from the Monster...
And in the Monster.
I know little about the Red Sox or Fenway but seeing the old wooden seats, that clank like anything when they're lowered and raised, seeing the one red seat amongst a sea of green for that famous shot from the 1940s (knocking out a guy in a straw hat - warning to you, Jake - don't wear hats) and sitting in the Budweiser bar right at the top with a perfect view of the Monster and each and every base, I swear I've almost converted from cricket. I may even start using baseball terms to describe cricket. Whatever happened, I will now wear my Red Sox hat, bought at Fenway, with GyllenPride.

All of these pictures of Fenway Park is a bit of a gas for a Yankee fan, like, haha who cares, but I love to see YOU there (here) WDW - great pictures - and am still trying to figure out a way to get you to stay - let's see - global freeze emergency . . .
have a safe trip home, if I don't get back on line
love
pia
Hi Pia! I am so sorry to be going home tomorrow night - I love this town and state and will be back. Everyone has welcomed me and what with BBMISwear! How could I go wrong?
Chuckling at you the Yankess fan. There were a couple on my Fenway tour, wearing their Yankees hats. But the only teasing they got was affectionate. At least on the surface! I don't think Man Utd and Man City fans would be so civil to one another!
Thank you for enjoying seeing me in Fenway xx It was so special for me and the thrill of sitting in the Monster! l thought I might faint!
I don't want to go home - missing Mr WDW - it'd be easier if he just came here :D
Love to you Pia xx I'll be back!
No you have not resistance of Fenway Park. Now you know what a passion being a Sox fan is and how lucky of a girl am I for getting to so much. Glad you got to see how amazing Fenway Park is, (Jake would totally agree) and hope you are enjoying Boston.
GO SOX!!!
And yeah the Green Monster seats are amazing, and they spoil you real fast.
Yankees were playing Red Sox when I was in NY earlier. Quite an event, but of course, I know nothing about it. *g* But you look great in the Monster! Is it the same box "his highness" was in?
Jake is right. I could use some Jake goodies on screen for distraction :)
The point about baseball and cricket is that they are both games that are best appreciated with large amounts of alcohol to stave off the hours of boredom before you get to the bottom of the ninth or the last wicket. I'd love to see a game at Fenway Park, but I wouldn't dream of doing it sober!
Go to Hanover Street for one more meal before you leave.
What a fantastic visit to Boston, WDW! Fenway is a baseball shrine, glad you got to see it, and got a hat! It looks beautiful in your pictures. Nice words from Jake as well. I loved the whale pics too, I haven't done that in awhile, I should go on a whale watch. :)
Have a safe trip back home,
Bertie
Good morning everyone! Packing up ready to leave, with a few hours left to go clambering up Bunker Hill. And there's always more time for one more margarita :D
Hey Special K! I can totally see now why this city is so crazy for its Red Sox! The history of the Park is amazing but even more special than that was the respect and love that keeps it as it was. Loved all the stories, such as the conversion seat. And the Green Monster was something else! It's like when we walked into the Park and saw the Monster for the first time, you could see people tremble! Resistance is futile :D I love your city.
Thanks Winterbird! I would love to sit there in a game but definitely with full armour on. The marks on the wall behind the seats shows it could be rather deadly. I think Jake was in the next box over, trying to hang on to his friend who was trying to catch the ball.
I love how Jake wants us to feel good. Give us more, Jake!
You are so right, Rob. I've never watched a cricket match sober, I've not even watched all of one awake - but that's part of the charm. I saw one baseball game in Florida many years ago and it was all the extras that made it fun. But it did go on quite a while. I have located Fenway's bars.
Hi Anon! I've had two delicious meals on Hanover Street this trip. What a place. And there was a festival on to so fireworks going off and processions through the streets. Loved it :D
Thanks, Bertie! And thanks for following me on my trip :D I'm glad I have some days off when I get home to reflect on all of it :D
Squee!!! Loving your vacay photos, WDW....you look fantastic in MV (the Obama's went to the Chilmark General Store!), with Brokie friends, on the water watching the whales, in Boston, and in the Green Monster!! :D Am totally living vicariously through you right now.
Aww, do I adore the Jake sightings, adorable photos (I would totally be squeeing if I was the woman at Pinkberry!), totally wonderful interview with Natalie Portman, etc. etc.
Have a great day everyone. :)
Btw, have a safe trip home.
Wow...I just caught up on the last couple of posts and it was so great to see all you did with your last few days in Boston! You know I would have loved to join you but after 6 days of trying to juggle work and family and wild times with WDW I just HAD to get back to reality for a bit. It hasn't been quite as fun as last week though (hee hee)!
I'm blown away by your Whales and Boston updates and pics (thank you for the post dedication BTW...I guess I was with you in spirit)?!
Oh...and you did the Fenway Tour?! What a great idea...I can't believe I didn't think to suggest that but you obviously found it on your own...YAY!!! I'm LMAO because suddenly you are Miss Baseball...what happened to calling it a "match"?! LOL!!! Oh and the Yankees comments had me roaring too...remember the hell I gave to our cab driver on MV because he was wearing a Yankees cap?! He said we have no idea how much crap he gets wearing that hat in MASS (Oh yes I do I told him...and he deserves it...ha ha)!!
Oh I could go on and on but I guess I'll stop here...I really wish I could have finished the trip off with you but feel I was there with you just looking at the posts. Thank you for sharing it all and sharing most of it with ME! Big Hugs and safe travels! Come back soon!
P.S. Jake is Lookin' Good in the most recent pictures today while at the Medical Center - (where else)? I just adore Scruffy Jake!
:-)
The Health center I used to go to was (and still is) directly across the street from Fenway Park. I used to live so close that I could hear fans cheering at the Park. The Boston Marathon used to pass right by my front door.
But now I've moved eight miles away from there. I thought the Monster was called "Big Green Monster."
I like it that Jake enjoys meeting people when researching a role, and that he appreciates how hard they/we work.
I have utmost respect for actors. It takes (artistic)courage and intelligence and integrity to be an good actor. They are the ultimate story tellers.
They illuminate dark corners, they teach, they provoke. In ancient times, they held a sacred trust. In fact, they were often used as spies and as conduits for political intrigue.
Acting is an ancient art and was much revered. I think Jake is being kind and trying to debunk the celebrity mystique that surrounds his profession, but I think he has great respect for it.
I love his humility and his self-deprecating humor.
hey WDW!what a great trip you had.i was busy with moving so i couldn't comment.
my uncle had brought me a Red Sox hat when he visited Boston.i love that hat,i still wear it even though it faded and got old.
loved the quote too.and his response to "you're a special man" aww Jake.
umm i wonder if you'll be able to scan the issue of Interview magazine?i'd have love to read the whole interview.but as it's an American magazine i can't buy it here. :(
hope you have a safe flight home.
Can't believe your hols are almost over WDW. Loved all your holiday posts and pictures - I have to say that like Get Real I have been living vicariously through you aswell for the last two weeks!!!
What a great interview with Natalie and Jake's quote exactly sums up what I feel about the movies as the audience. We really do need a rest from RL in these times of the unmentionable "R" word. Loved the 'special man' bit aswell:)
I tried to see if I could order that copy of Interview directly from the publisher but you don't appear to be able to order single issues only full subscriptions:(
Have a safe journey home WDW.
I made it home and had a nap - ugh feel bad though. Where's Jake and his jetlag cures when you need him. But I am so not doing any running and exercise! I managed to make it to the local coffee shop though.
Thanks Get Real! I didn't know the Obamas went to the Chilmark store - yahay! Thanks for telling me :D Is this a good time to say that I (and maybe not just me...) bought the Bobama First Dog on MV t-shirt :DD
Hey BBMISwear! I thought of you out on the high seas looking for whales :D It was well worth it when we found them but it made me think of those 12 foot waves they were threatening of MV!
The Fenway tour was great! You can only do it when the Red Sox aren't playing at home so it took some planning as they're always playing! Do they never get a day off...?
He's lookin good :-) Hugs to you!!
Hey Paul :D I like it too that Jake enjoys researching his roles and learning from the experiences that all of us live through.
Hi there Anon! Thanks for that very interesting comment and it is so true that actors have been known through the centuries for dabbling in intrigue. I completely agree that Jake has the utmost respect for his craft and it is good to hear that he appreciates that actors communicate to the rest of us on so many levels - including escapism. I always enjoy hearing Jake talk about acting and I can see why he would want to do such a wide range of roles - so many different experiences and viewpoints for him and us.
Hi Gretchen! Hope the moving went well. I'm going to treasure my hat too :) I'll be alternating my Red Sox and Chilmark hats! I will scan the interview. There aren't any pictures of Jake unfortunately (although the pics of Natalie are rather stunning). It's bigger than A4 so I'll do it in bits tomorrow when I'm more compos mentis!
Hi Carol :D I'm so glad you enjoyed the holiday posts. Thank you! If you have a Borders near you, they should have it in a few weeks. But I'll scan it. Thanks for the good wishes :)
WDW, glad you made it home OK. I don't know about Jake's jet lag remedies, but several truths about it that I learned the hard way include:
Caffeine and alcohol dehydrate. That is opposite of what people who are jet lagged need. Hydration...as in lots of water is the best thing.
Secondly, Oxygenation, meaning smoking is very bad when you've come off a long flight. If a person isn't properly oxygenated, they will be headachey and muscle achey and have general feelings of fatigue and sick-feeling. I think that is why Jake must exercise. It gets the blood oxygenation levels way up and gives you energy. Seriously. The final thing is to avoid any mucus producing foods such as lots of yeasty breads, dairy (Including eggs and cheese,) and red meat. I promise, if you do these things even for three or four days, in general, and not just for travel, you will feel absolutely fabulous! If you don't then give it even more days ! LOL!
Thanks for the tips Ingerac! I'm managing to combine water with coffee and fortunately I'm not a smoker. I did go out and have a walk in gales! That helped. What would help even more is if Jake came round and read to me :D OMG I definitely want to avoid mucus foods!! Chuckle :D
You're home safe and sound!
LMAO at this: "Is this a good time to say that I (and maybe not just me...) bought the Bobama First Dog on MV t-shirt" because I AM WEARING MINE RIGHT NOW!!!!!
Ahh, good times...good times...
:-)
Heehee! Love that you're wearing your t-shirt now, BBMISwear! That'll be me tomorrow :-)
yays!thank you WDW.can't wait for it. :)
hope you feel better soon.i've never flown that long so have never experienced jetlag.
oh and i forgot to ask what is your favourite quote of Jake?since you put the one in the post in top 2.
Thanks Gretchen :) I'm mainly tired because I can't sleep on planes so t makes for a long day. And now I'm totally disobeying the jetlag rules - relaxing after a poached egg with a Stella :D
That is such a good question, about the Jake quote and to be honest, I couldn't tell you without giving some serious thought to it. I will do that and it's a great idea for a post.
It's great you sat where Jake sat. I wasn't sure if it was in the green monster. Whatever you do don't ever wear anything that says "yankees" Boston and NY have a BIG rivalry. My friend's husband is a HUGE Red Sox fan and I'm from NY (I'm not a baseball fan, Oh I do keep track of what the teams are doing but the game never caught my fancy)
Whale watching! I always wanted to do that. It must have been a thrill to see the humpbacks. I wonder if Jake ever did that?
I am sure we'll be able to look forward to plenty of mag covers promoting Brothers (and POP) coming soon.
sweetpea
Hi Sweetpea :D As BBMISwear says we did have some fun at the expense of some Yankee fans - I think they expected it :D And then there was the brave soul who went on the Fenway tour in his Yankees cap. The tourguide tried to convert him throughout the tour! But it was good natured.
I'm really looking forward to those magazine covers!
