Love and Other Drugs gets a cast injection, Brokeback Mountain remains AfterElton's Best Gay Movie

With Jake Gyllenhaal getting ready to go back to work on Monday, with all that that entails (washing and - optional - ironing clothes, getting one's body clock back into the rhythm of the daily grind, perhaps buying some new stationery), it must be a comfort for him to know he will not be alone. After reports that Gabriel Macht from Whiteout would be joining the cast of Love and Other Drugs, today we have had confirmation that Oliver Platt and Hank Azaria have signed up for duty as well. We also get confirmation that Jake will be called Jamie and needless confirmation that he will be 'charming'. And with Jake playing the role, you can expand that to mean 'Very, Very, Very Charming'.

According to The Hollywood Reporter: 'Macht plays a hotshot Prozac salesman who's invovled romantically with Maggie (Hathaway), a free-spirited woman with Parkinson's disease who enters into a relationship with charming Viagra salesman Jamie (Gyllenhaal). Azaria plays an unscrupulous doctor and client of Jamie's, and Platt plays his boss, a beleaguered pharmaceutical rep desperate to boost Jamie's sales.'

Oliver Platt will forever be known to me as the crocodile whisperering Hector of Lake Placid and Babish of The West Wing, but he also had roles in Kinsey and Casanova. Hank Azaria (Kahmunrah of Night at the Museum) is known for doing every other voice in The Simpsons. Hank and Oliver recently acted together in Year One, which I'm sure they were funny in even though I've never heard of it. I'm delighted in particular to hear that Oliver Platt will be acting in this film alongside Jake and Anne.

The consensus around the net is good, with Empire, for example, saying that this is a film with 'a heck of a cast'. We should definitely expect much more from this project than a typical romcom, with wit, satire, fine acting, an unconventional plot, sizzling chemistry and a charming Jake Gyllenhaal to boot, all competing for our attention.

Last night, it looked like other aspects of Jake Gyllenhaal could have been dominating our attention in May 2010 - a 3D bare-chested, multi-belted, leather trousered, booted and strapped, wet and leaping Prince Dastan! However, this morning, Disney dashed our 3-dimensional hopes. This was probably in the interests of health and safety. One cannot easily envisage the effect of a 3D Jake on audiences, especially IMAX audiences (a 2D Jake is more than enough to cope with). A 3D pecking ostrich and a 3D spitting camel would have been awkward.

Brokeback continues to change lives

AfterElton today announced its new 50 Best Gay Movies and yet again Brokeback Mountain tops the list and yet again it is by a landslide. What particularly struck me about AfterElton's piece on the film is its assertion that Brokeback is as real a place as any and I don't just mean a cinematic location.

'Brokeback Mountain a pretend place? On the contrary, it was the controversy that surrounded the movie’s release that turned out to be the illusion: that ridiculous six-month orgy of conservative outrage and mean-spirited jokes from late-night comedians – not to mention an Oscar snub that was clearly motivated by Hollywood’s fears that the town might be perceived as being too “liberal” as well as plain old-fashioned homophobia.'

'Four years after the movie’s release, we now know that Brokeback Mountain, both the mountain and the movie, was something very real. Did it change Hollywood? Did it change America? I don’t know, and I don’t really care. But I know for a fact it changed me, profoundly and dramatically. And for most of you who voted in our movie poll, I suspect it changed you too.' He suspects right.

And finally...

The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus has been on display in Toronto and the reviews are coming in. Here is Cinematical's review of an eye dazzling spectacle.

I have to be quick!

Love all the news about Love and Other Drugs! We need 3 films in 2010 from Jake!

And Brokeback forever. AfterElton couldn't have put it more perfectly - I don't care about the snub or the outcry, Brokeback is personal, intimate and profound to so many of us.

Zodiac tour??? *g*

Good to see you during your tea break, BBMISwear :-) Pictures! We do want pictures. What's a poP post without camels? I love the idea of re-enacting Zodiac - but not the non-gory bits. I hope your busy wee goes well :)

Hey Winterbird! 2010 is going to be great :D

I thought AfterElton put it perfectly too and it's a tribute to how Brokeback continues to change our lives. And that will outlast any outcry. Yep, a Zodiac tour :D

I hope everyone's having a good evening!

Squee...just catching up on all the exciting Jake news!!! :D

So much great stuff going on with Jake's movies and I can't be more excited that he is in NYC with Maggie and Peter! The Maggie interviews were lovely. Glad to see Peter at TIFF.

Hank Azaria is great, as is Oliver Platt and the PoP costumes are so cool.

Good stuff!! :)

Fitting to the LAOD news... there was a Jake and Anne sighting:

"AtoZcomm: Forgot to note: Anne Hathaway & Jake Gyllenhaal were spotted outside Buffalo Blues in Pgh's East End Thurs. checking Steeler's score."

:)

^^I hope more positive reviews for "Imaginarium" will surface. :)
Terry Gilliam didn't have a commercial hit or critically acclaimed film in a decade. :(

Oliver Platt was a chronic scene-stealer in "Casanova." I love the idea that he'll be stealing some scenes from Jake, after stealing Heath's scenes ;-).

As for "Prince of persia" not being 3D, I thought it was being filmed in 3D. No? Seems as though I read somewhere that it was. Did they film it in 3D and then decide it would be too costly to bring to the screen?

Hi Twitter :D Just the thought of Jake and Anne together again is so wonderful! I can't wait for pictures. I hope they have a lot of fun making the movie. Great stuff :)

Hi JakeFan :D Terry Gilliam is just one of those directors who will never appeal to everyone so I think reviews are bound to be mixed. I do think the buzz surrounding the movie is very positive though.

Hope everyone's having a good evening :)

Hi Paul! Posting at the same time :D I love the idea of Oliver Platt and Jake in the same scene - just the thought of how they'll spark off each other.

Errr.... I must admit that I did a 3D PoP spoof post for April Fool's Day. I felt like it was coming true for a minute :D It sounds like PoP was most definitely filmed in 2D.

OH DEAR GOD!!

Jake half naked in 3D?!?!

I don't think I can take it, I just might as well faint in the theaters. A movie like such should be privately watched at home, not in public with kids and other people around...

Oliver Platt is always wonderful! I love his character in Casanova!

More recognition for BBM? Deserve. Is the best movie ever!

Getty Images has pictures of Jake watching Arrogant vrs. Del Poltro!

Hi Dailing! Oh that's so true - definitely not a movie for the kids :DD

Hey Monica :D I do agree about Oliver. Ooh thanks for the heads up about the pics!

I was very sorry to hear about Patrick Swayze this morning - that was quite a battle he fought. Thinking of his family and friends today.

Hello WDW, another wonderful post (and followed by some wonderful pics of Jake at the US Open... thank you!!).
The casting for this new film reminds me a bit of my former obsession with Matthew Perry (I still like him, but I sort of had to put that obsession on the back burner when Jake "came along" LOL). One of his best friends is Hank Azaria, who's also very very talented, and they worked together not only in Friends, but also on the stage in London West End in 2003. They were doing Sexual Perversity in Chicago, by David Mamet. I went to see them on stage and it was great. The play and the production were good, but I was mostly interested in watching Matthew on stage. He was very good and convincing, especially considering it was his theatre debut, but overall there's something really special about watching a favourite actor playing onstage (which makes me so angry to have missed Jake in This is Our Youth!! ... but that's another story)
Anyway, at the time I'd watched pretty much most of Matthew's movies (most of which were pretty forgettable), including Three to Tango, where he works with Oliver Platt, and the two have a good chemistry there, and Oliver gave a really hilarious performance.

So the mention of Hank and Oliver made me think of my pre-Jake obsessions in some ways.

Thank you also for posting about Brokeback again. I loved what AfterElton had to say about this unforgettable movie.

Love & hugs
