A thousand movie moments that made a Gyllenhaalic

What with all the excitement of Jake Gyllenhaal sweating in the Burgh, the 1000th WDW post occurred last week. To mark the occasion, I thought I would have a think about some of those movie moments which have stuck out in my mind even more than the multitude of other movie moments which have made a Gyllenhaalic out of me. It would be wonderful if they triggered some memories of your own, at a time when we're getting more than ready to welcome some more, courtesy of Brothers and Prince of Persia.

So, in no particular order... Joe and Bertie's Moonlight Mile dance. I am not able to watch this scene without a million shivers creeping down my spine.

Jake's movies often exert a musical pull and the Killing Moon beginning of Donnie Darko is dynamite.

Swoff in the desert watching and feeling the oil fall and leaving white steps in black ash.

The spectacle of The Day After Tomorrow, with my favourite scenes being the 'Tell her how you feel' moment in the library and Wet Sam dodging tidal waves by leaping over cars. As a Brit, how could I not have fallen for this meteorological delight?

There's not much for me that can beat the opening credit sequence of Zodiac, with the arrival of both the letter and Graysmith to the Chronicle offices. Later on there was the first time that I have ever been really scared in a Jake movie - I'm talking basements, as noone has a basement in California.

The descent into the pit.

Other scenes that I recall are Swoff calming the frightened, oil sodden horse, Dustin Hoffman kissing Jake's forehead as his character realises he can't cling on to his daughter anymore, and Donnie's authoritative Smurf lecture. It'll be impossible to forget Jake's opening scene in Rendition for obvious reasons. But above and beyond all is the first time we set eyes on Jack Twist and the last time he sets eyes on Ennis del Mar and remembers that embrace. Plus about every other minute of Brokeback Mountain.

Oh my, Oh my. I am pretty much speechless right now and we all know that doesn't happen very often!

Thank you for this wonderful recap of some of the best Jake movie moments ever WDW! And congratulations on your 1000th post...Wow...that is AMAZING! And you should be very proud as your posts are not full of simple babbling but always full of fun, informative and often quite humorous Jake info we want and need to hear about! So Thank You and happy 1000th Post Anniversary!

Now...back to the post...I think I need to view it again. Never enough Jake Movies, never enough.

*heavy sigh*

Good to see you, BBMISwear :-) And thank you! It's next to impossible to pick those perfect movie moments, there are so many - and that is the joy of following Jake in the movies. While there haven't been nearly as many films lately as I'd like (never enough :D), what we do have is full of treasures. That's what, for me, is unique about Jake's movie career and makes me continue to wait with breath held for what's to come. Jake should be very proud of what he's given us and I'm very happy that he's out there working to give us more!

Being a Gyllenhaalic for me is all about having fun and so I'm glad that spills over into the posts :) Made some good friends along the way and made some journeys too, BBMISwear xx

I hope everyone's having a good Saturday - I'm watching Lord of the Rings 3 before watching Brokeback :)

Congrats on WDW's 1000th post!

The dozy embrace - out of what must be countless time viewing Brokeback, it always brings me to tears. One of the few times Ennis shows emotion, the others being the reunion kiss, and when he first comes down from the mountain and leaves Jack, getting sick in the alley. And the emotion he draws from Jack in that dozy embrace, it just does me in. I loved the Moonlight Mile dance scene, but when Joe comes to Bertie at her house, that does me in.

beautiful trailers, WDW. It's nice to revisit these movies.

I think Jake is on his way to Philly. someone on twitter said they were on their flight but they didn't way where the flight was heading. I'm just assuming

Congratulations on your 1000th post, WDW! I'm an avid reader, very lax commentator... but I just had to come here to say what a fantastic achievement! All of your posts are timely and top-notch - your Jake love shines through... looking forward to the next 1000!

PS My word is 'musnesso' - I rather like the sound of that!

Morning everyone and a happy 60th to Stephen Gyllenhaal :)

Thanks Anon! I watched Brokeback late last night for the first time in quite a while and it was such a powerful experience - because of it being BBM but also because of the wave of nostalgia that came over me for what it was like in 2006 to be swept up in it all. Very strong emotions. The dozy embrace just sums it up :)

I love that moment when Joe visits Bertie's house and they're both so vulnerable. After Jack and Ennis, Joe and Bertie are my most beloved of these couples.

Thanks Sweetpea! I think it's more likely that Jake was flying to Pittsburgh or NYC (the tweeter was a New Yorker). He'd been in Boston the night before (it was reported that he and Reece attended a wedding there) and so he was probably flying back to work or back to NYC for the Ramona celebrations.

Hey... X! Good to see you here :D I'm so glad to hear the Jake Love shines through - it's quite a strong force! I hope you're feeling better *)

My word sounds like something you feed pigs...

I hope everyone has a good Sunday :)

X said it so well, I can't even compete. But I agree with all of it! Congratulations, WDW!! :*

happy 1000th post WDW!and here's to 1000 more!
thanks for providing this great, (agenda free) blog about Jake and Jake only.

i can't see the videos now but i see you didn't include the 500 dolla scene from Bubble Boy! *pout*
=P

anyway have a nice day.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Anna! *)

OMG, that was such a great scene, Gretchen! There's a real problem with Bubble Boy - I could never in a million years pick a scene from that one as I love every scene Jake's in! But I reckon if I had to pick one, the cow split in half, the buying the bus ticket, the shiny happy people, the first moments out in the bubble and the underpants scene :D And the 500 dolla scene, oh yes - Jake mud wrestling, even in a bubble, yes please!

And it's a pleasure, thanks!

Wow, what a great post to celebrate!! Congrats and may there be 1,000 more! :D

I love Brokeback so much that I sometimes don't give as much credit to his other films - he is just amazing in MM, especially being so young. He really is able to show feelings and emotion realistically. We love him in October Sky too. :)

Gretchen said...

what's also amazing about the 500 dolla scene is that it's improvised!i listened to audio commentary few days ago, director said that they knew they were going to do a mud wrestling scene but the entry into that was not exactly written.and that was all that other actor (i forgot his name,Pung Wi?or something similar) and Jake.

yes to all the scenes you mentioned!the beer stealing scene is also hilarious.and the first moment out of the bubble is too adorable for words.

Bubble Boy is so underrated!!it is a great comedy.i'm glad Jake does not feel ashamed of it despite people trying to make him(another reason to love him).he was beyond cute in that film. :]

Happy 1000th post! It's an amazing record to achieve in a relative short time... it's like your average number of post per day is... 2. something? wow.

We need more Jake-movies! After starving in 2009!

Anonymous said...

He was very, very funny in Bubble Boy, I never thought I would like it but I did. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks, Get Real! I'm looking forward to the next 1000 posts, there's going to be so much going on!

Hi 13:29 :D It is god to go back and see the early ones. I love October Sky, that always moves me so much and now it's amazing seeing how much Jake has changed (and grown) in 10 years.

I love the commentary to BBoy, Gretchen! I can't tell you how many time I listen to it - always cracks me up. Jake and Blair have some great chemistry going on. And this just shows what I mean - I'd forgotten the beer scene - how could I? I love that scene!!!

Hi Winterbird! Oh blimey, that makes it scarey :D We so need some Jake movies, so, get on with it please, Jake!

Hi 13:47 :D I don't think I would ever have seen BBoy otherwise and I'm so glad I did - it's hysterical :D

Congratulations, wet dark.
My favorite scene from BBM is the second night in the tent. Always crying every time I see this scene.

All the scenes with Ennis and Jack are beautiful and touching.

thank you!

IMDB
There's another day I have on "Love and Other Drugs" that shoots a week from Tuesday at Mellon Arena. I think we'll be shooting what's supposed to be a Pfizer corporate rally or convention or whatever. I think there's going to be something like 450 extras.

Anonymous said...

Oh yes, Second Night in the Tent - so much tenderness and emotion in that one also. It's hard to describe - Ennis so vulnerable and Jack there for him.

Anonymous said...

These were fun. But I can't believe you left out Rendition. Jake certainly had his "moments" in Rendition.

Anonymous said...

Definitely! :)

Congratulations WDW on 1000 posts. And not just any old chucked together posts either, but all well-written, thoughtful and entertaining. I admire your dedication. ;-)

Thanks for the clips. I haven't watched any Jake movies for a while (I'm getting impatient for new ones), so it's nice to see a few favourite moments.

We’re actively doing what’s called the “Effects Breakdown” for my untitled Moon film in order to budget the movie, given how effects-intensive it is. Kevin Elam and I go through the script and come up with every single effects shot we anticipate might be in the film. Obviously, it’s a guess right now because we’re so far out from shooting the film, but you read a line in the script and you think: How many shots am I going to need to make that idea work onscreen? Then you come up with this list of probably 1,200 shots. That list then goes to someplace like ILM (the mother of effects houses) and they bid, and that probably takes a couple of weeks. This is one page of the list that we put together. We’ve blacked out the numbers, but it’ll give you an idea of what we’re working on: Visual Effects Breakdown.

So good to see everyone here! A very nice break from all the housework I'm doing today - ugh. Housework while singing along with Abba - I apologise to all neighbours...

Hi Monica and thanks! 450 extras in one fell swoop eh... I don't think they'll be anyone from Pittsburgh soon who isn't in it! I definitely suggest Oxford for the next Jake location...

That's a very special scene, Monica. I watched it last night :)

Hi 15:05 and 15: 18! well, I did give the opening Jake scene from Rendition a shout out in the post but I couldn't find a clip... Shame, because that is most definitely a defining Jake movie moment and I want similar scenes in all future movies - Ed ZwicK, are you listening! Jake was so hot in Rendition.

Thank you, Rubes! And thank you for the WDW brainstorming sessions over tea! I'm more than ready for us to see another Jake movie - I'll get the beer if you get the popcorn *)

Thanks Tas! '..a quiet and shy young thing' - ah, you know me too well ;)

Good to see friends old and new here :) It wouldn't have been any fun at all doing WDW if I'd been talking to myself...

I refuse to do any more housework this month. Except if Jake comes round. Then I'll get him to do it.

Hi Monica! Posting at the same time. That was a good post from Doug - I did a post on it some days ago here but it's good to read it again :)

I already said congrats to the 1000th post and listed why WDW should be so proud of this blog (and was quite excited that I got to be the first to do so)! But I just love what Gretchen said here so I need to second it: "thanks for providing this great, (agenda free) blog about Jake and Jake only". BEEP, Perfect Score, Gold Star! You nailed it Gretchen!

This post of movie clips had me going back and forth re: which Jake movie to watch last night (I finally had an empty house to watch whatever I wanted...which doesn't happen much). I decided on Highway, which has always been a favorite of mine. Why I don't watch that movie more is beyond me...it always, always, always makes me smile and cheers me up when I'm down. I guess I know why I don't...it's not easy to do with a 13 year old in the house!

Anyway, one more movie note...Monica says this about BBM's second night in the tent: "My favorite scene from BBM is the second night in the tent. Always crying every time I see this scene." - I agree 100% - but have always taken it one step further. I have told just about anyone who will listen that this isn't just my favorite scene in this movie, it's my favorite scene in any movie ever made. Period. *heavy sigh*

Okay...back to what WDW says she's not going to do anymore!

:-)

so he went to Boston I wonder how many friends he has from up there (I know he must have many from MV. I have to wonder if he stays in touch with Chris Fischer)

I forgot yesterday was Ramona's birthday, I bet Uncle Jake went to celebrate

Hey, Bright and Shiiiiineys - who could forget adoreable mixed up Holden "that's my slave name" Caufield. Most of his characters have heart and show it.

Congrats on 1000 wickedly fun, good natured, well researched posts. You're a one stop health shop for the heart of all of us that love Jake and his peeps. Look forward to the next 1000.

How about us Gyllenhaalic really making 1000 movie moments.

PS. Saw Dr Parnassus advertised on TV as being out October 16 in the UK.

Pilot! He's a great boost when you're feeling down - I hope he did the trick. BBMISwear *)

Hi Sweetpea :) I'm sure Jake finds the time for his old friends, he seems to be whizzing about constantly jetting up the airmiles.

Hi Sheba! I like that - that the characters have heart. I saw Dr P advertised today too and I think the Vue cinemas are going to be showing it in a week or two - good news :D

I hope everyone's having a good Sunday - I've been watching Bride Wars with Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson, ignoring Mr WDW rolling his eyes in the corner... Burnt pizza, anyone?

thanks BBMISwear :] and i agree with what you said in your congrats post.

oh The Good Girl - i only saw that once.it's too depressing for me.but i bought the dvd recently, i'll watch it again sometime.he's so good there.the "you're a hooker!you hooker" scene is funny.

Congratulation on your 1000th post, WDW!!! It's beyond amazing, how you've consistently written so many enlightening, informative, often light-hearted but never shallow, posts on our Jake!
Thank you so much and here's to another 1000, at least!
Love & hugs

I think, Gretchen, that The Good Girl is the only one of Jake's films that I don't return to very often. Just too depressing for me, although the last time I saw it, I did enjoy it more than before. I love Jen so I really hope that at some time they do another film together - a bit lighter though, please :D

Thanks, Carol! That's such a nice thing to say :)

Thanks so much, Paola - it's always such a pleasure to talk about Jake :D

Since you've brought up the opening of "The Day After Tomorrow," I have to mention the trailer for "2012," which reminds me of TDAT a lot. All those waves inundating New York, etc. Which reminds me that I'm writing a short-short story about 2012. Actually, it's a mock-disaster story because to me the idea of a calendar-based end-of-world scenario is so bizarre as to deserve considerable ridicule. ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! I'd admired Jake before - with Donnie Darko - but I first fell for him with TDAT so it has a special place :D You're so right about 2012 - absolutely ridiculous, but what a corker of a trailer! I'm so weak...
