Jim Sheridan on Jake Gyllenhaal: 'he's a sweetheart'

Tomorrow, Brothers is finally released in the UK. It's taken quite a bit over two years to make it, but at last it's here. Not surprisingly for this film, its arrival has been low-key, with even some of the cinemas, just a few days ago, not quite certain if it was coming or not. Then one cinema chain advertised the title with the wrong film, just to make it that little bit harder for potential audiences. Reviews have been all over the place with their verdict but the majority agree that Jake Gyllenhaal, in the words of Film 2010 host and critic Jonathan Ross, is 'outstanding'.

Film 2010 included new interviews with Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman but none with Jake. And, disappointingly, the Guardian's film blogger (and possible successor to Ross on Film 2010) Jason Solomon discussed Natalie and Tobey with Jim Sheridan in his weekly podcast, but not Jake. This is despite the fact that Jason has on more than occasion shown himself to be quite the Gyllenhaalic - I remember BAFTAS 2006.

Nevertheless, in a new interview with Digital Spy, Jim Sheridan did have just a little to say about his star Jake: 'Q: You've previously said that Jake Gyllenhaal drove you mad at points - did you find a way to cope with each other in the end? JS: "Yes, I think we both realised we'd always be fighting to be the centre of attention - two mammie's boys it's called on the set! But he's a sweetheart and after I'd got used to him I adored him. He's easy to work with."'

Natalie Portman has also been telling the Mirror that on occasion, when tensions rose between Jake and Tobey, she was the mediator on set.

However, despite the UK release of Brothers tomorrow, Jake and a host of stars has other business to attend to, helping to raise funds for Haiti in George Clooney's Telethon. Jake was also one of those who filmed a Red Cross commercial for the appeal on Saturday and that will air on tomorrow's Oprah.

And finally...

As we all remember, Jake Gyllenhaal got a well-celebrated mention in a recent episode of House. Last night, it was the turn of Ugly Betty.

Pictures thanks to IHJ.

That's so funny Silver! But I'll be honest, I missed it too :D but it never matters cos of iPlayer. But there was no jake so Boone is missing anything. Sounds like JR thought Jake was the best thing about the film :)

LOL... that's an excellent line from Ugly Betty, even though I normally I can't stand that show.

I know Jake will win over Jim's heart eventually :)

Brothers poster has disappeared in my tube station (and no, not because I stole it). The promotion effort in UK is strangely lacking. Not happy!

On a happier note, even though it gets a lukewarm reception from the "strict critics". Brothers get very good rating in imdb - so the general movie-goers love it. :)

If Jake skips coming to UK for Brothers, will he make it up and come to Bafta?

Anonymous said...

Yes Jonathon Ross did seem keen on Jake :)

I agree with Winterbird.. my cinema took down the cardboard cut-out of the poster aswell..they also only have three showings a day in comparrison with Avatar having 20+ I know it's a blockbuster, but still.. :/

The UK has put very poor effort into advertising this film! :(

"because sometimes, only a squeeeeee will do." LOL! That sounds like a publicity slogan. :D

I'm glad Brothers is finally arriving in the UK. You guys have waited long enough. :)

Is Brothers even having a premiere?

So strange that is not happening a great promotion of the film in the UK. Here they created an official website in portuguese, there are also posting on orkut and a channel on youTube in portuguese too.
In the cinema that I went there were two posters. A normal and a great.

Jake was also one of those who filmed a Red Cross commercial for the appeal on Saturday and that will air on tomorrow's Oprah.

That's a great news.
I saw some images on CNN and the situation is much worse than I thought.

I also don't see UB. Thank you for the information.

Best wishes to all the Gyllenhaalics in the UK as you approach Brothers Day (FINALLY)!! Enjoy and be sure to let us know how you all liked it. I, personally, loved it for a variety of reasons. Have fun tomorrow!!

I've been catching up on things (again) now that I'm back from vacay. I guess coming back to New England winter and having it be only 50 degrees colder than in the Bahamas isn't that bad. It quite easily could have been 70 degrees colder at this time of year so I won't complain too much I guess!

Speaking of winter and cold...Hockey!! (Similarity #19 for me and Olympia - "my favorite sport")!! It was so good to see Jake at a hockey game but it just seems to me like it's not his thing. I thought that when I first read that article way back when re: going to a game while in Calgary and I'm still thinking it after viewing the latest photos. I think he goes to these games to please filmmakers...LOL! Maybe I think this because, in the states, hockey is one of those sports that where you're from tends to really make a difference in how much you like this game. (Note: there are not a lot of die hard hockey fans that were born and raised in the warm weather states - but a quick visit to anywhere in the north or east or especially the northeast and when it comes to hockey you'd think you were in Canada)!

Okay...enough hockey talk...let's get back to the good stuff...Jake on TV! I'm looking forward to seeing him on the telethon and the commercial. My DVR is set for both as I won't be home to see either when they air. It's a serious cause and I don't want to take away from that but a little Jake on TV certainly can brighten a person's day (and will probably do good for the cause as well).

I guess it's time to stop rambling and get back to unpacking...UGH!

Cheers to the Brits and Brothers (even with the lack of enthusiasm from the cinemas over there). What do they know anyway?!

:-)

I was disappointed aswell with no Jake interview on Film 2010 but it was great to hear JR say he was outstanding:)

I can't believe Brothers is finally here. There's been very little mention of it in Ireland apart from a few mentions of Jim Sheridan on the radio during the week.

I'm looking forward to hearing the reaction of everyone who will be seeing it for the first time.

Hey Winterbird! Yeah, Jake won him over at the end :) So, no poster, eh? And you suddenly had that giant PoP poster too - hmmmmm. Where's my deerstalker cap :D seriously though NOT impressed by the marketing here. If anyone goes to see it here it won't be because of the distributor and marketing co.

Hi Silver - that's not good. There are a lot of screenings at my local very lovely cinema but they've not advertised it. No posters - nothing.

Hey Olympia! It's about time it got here!

Hi Anon :) No premiere here, I'm afraid. I wasn't expecting one though to be honest. And Jake is righy busy with the telethon.

Hey Monica! I'm so glad to hear that there's more publicity in Brazil! That's good news.

Welcome home BBMISwear - and wrap up :-) I do agree about the ice hockey! That's so funny! I always thought that too. It's not a sport that's big over here - not at all. It seems strange to see ice hockey in LA. It's so so good to see Jake a part of this telethon. Not much here about the telethon which is a shame. Take it easy - don't overdo it with the unpacking :-)

Hi Carol! I'm looking forward to hearing what people say too! I'm seeing it with friends here on Saturday and I've taken a vow of silence. Can't wait to see it again and discuss it afterwards :)

waves to Sweetpea :)

Very glad to hear that Brothers is coming to the UK!!!

Although I am not happy to hear about the spotty promotion and Jake not being mentioned that much in articles, etc. :/

But thrilled that Jim praised Jake and that Jake will be doing the Haiti charity event Friday...will also have to watch Oprah!!!

Thanks so much as always for all the info. :D

Good mornng all! And it's not just raining in LA...

A special day in lots of ways

I hope everyne who sees Brothers today for the first time has a wonderful time :)

Hugs to BBMISwear on her BBM anniversary :-)

Good luck to the Telethon and any lucky bugger who gets Jake on the phone :D

And today thoughts are never too far away from Heath and his family. Love to Heath.

I was also dissapointed there was no Jake interview on Film 2010 but thought he must have been busy with new projects perhaps.
The telethon in on MTV in the UK from 1am to 4am (!) in case you didnt know and felt like staying up until the early hours!

Karen said...

"is on MTV in the UK" is what I meant to say!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Karen! I wonder if the interviews were recorded while Jake was off finishing LAOD.

Unfortunately, I'm one of those with just Freeview so I can't get MTV but I also hear it'll be livestreamed on YouTube. Downside of that is you can't record it and you'd be up all night!

I'm gonna hope that Stephanie can capture some Jake!

Chucking it down out there...

Today my thoughts are with Heath.
And with his family and friends.

Awwww, thank you for remembering my BBM Anniversary today WDW. A bitter sweet day indeed. This date is now such an emotional roller coaster for me and I'm sure many feel the same today as there is such wonderful "Jake Stuff" going on right now but it's hard not to feel sad as we think about Heath and this tragic date. *heavy sigh* At least we have many here that "get it"...not just anyone does (at least not in my everyday world).

I'm thinking there will be bits and pieces of the telethon that will show up here and there over the next few days and we'll all have our eyes peeled for Jake of course.

I'm glad it's the weekend.

My thought are with Heath, his family, friends and fans today.
What a shame, he had a beautiful daughter, a great career and women seemed to like him. I feel like he threw away his life. :(

I'm glad Jake will take part in the Haiti telethon today. :)

Delighted "Brothers" is finally opening, but I am thoroughly disappointed in Lionsgate for doing such a terrible job promoting and distributing this movie!

I cannot believe some of these critics barely mention Jake, and I would point out that they seem to have forgotten about the two little girls as well.

With all the focus on Tobey, and the recent announcement about "Spiderman," it almost makes me wonder if they decided to use "Brothers" as Tobey's transition to "serious" films on a permanent basis.

It reminds me of what happened with Natalie Portman after "Star Wars." "Closer" seemed to be her "serious" adult debut, in hindsight.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Monica and Jake Fan :)

Hey BBMISwear :-) No chance of me forgetting. I hope today's been ok for you. And yes you most certainly are not alone.

I do hoope something shows up as there's no chance of catching it here for me. Sigh....

That's a lovely pic, 14:27 :)

Hey 16:24 - that's a very iinteresting point and one has to wonder about the timing. Personally, after seeing Tobey as Sam I would find it extremely difficult to see him as Spider-Man but then that might be because I'm not a fan of Spider-Man and not particularly of Tobey. But yes this could easily be his transition film, almost for Natalie too. Jakes just so good in it.

I'm mad at the way Lionsgate have not marketed this film in the UK. There have been tiny bits and pieces in the papers and that is it. Even the cinemas haven't been listing it. No wonder the critics are giving it little time. I'd be surprised if many people see it here, which is such a shame.

One thing about Jerry Bruckheimer, he knows how to market a film. After Brothers I can kind of see why Jake might want a contrast.

New post!
