Watching the sun rise together on a special day - Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal - 'he knows'

Maggie Gyllenhaal's pure delight in receiving her first Oscar nomination comes with an added blessing for us - a glimpse into that close relationship she shares with her brother Jake. Maggie's nomination is a family affair. They've experienced this before and will undoubtedly do so again.

Maggie on ET: 'I wasn't nominated for anything else so I was really surprised this morning! We're staying at my brother's and so my daughter, my husband and I were all in the same room. I didn't want to wake them up and so I ran to the hallway and my brother's housephone rang. And my brother got up and he said 'Did you get nominated?' I said yes and we were just shaking! He said 'Your phone is going to ring all day'... He said he didn't do this stuff, interviews and stuff, as he was working so he just went straight to work. But I was thinking when I was sitting with him, I thought in these kinds of interviews, in junkets, journalists alwas ask me 'Does it help having your husband and your brother doing the same work as you?' I actually was thinking this morning, sitting with him, I thought 'This helps'. It helps that he's been through this. That he knows how it feels. So exciting and overwhelming and scary and thrilling. And he knew.'

Maggie told In Contention: 'The thing is, you know, I’m so proud of the movie and I always have been, more proud of it than any of the work I’ve done so far. But because I wasn’t getting nominated for anything, I wasn’t expecting it. My phone was ringing so early and I thought, “Wait, maybe!” I was staying at my brother’s in LA. He said to me, “Your phone is going to be ringing all day.” He made me a cup of coffee and then we watched the sun rise. It was pretty mellow. But this wouldn’t be happening for Jeff [Bridges] or me if it wasn’t for Scott [Cooper].'

You can see Jeff Bridges describing his own pleasure at Maggie's nomination here.

Edited to add: Another lovely interview with Maggie here for Access Hollywood. Just look at that face! That is a happy face.

Thanks to Monica for the heads up on In Contention. Thanks to IHJ for the pics.

Well, I can't tell you enough how much I loved hearing, reading this - it's so good that Maggie can experience and enjoy all this with Jake and Peter. And of course Naomi has had a nomination too. I'm so happy for Maggie - it was lovely hearing her describe how she was going to enjoy every moment of celebrating and how she was looking forward to trying on the dresses. It'll be amazing!

And the watching the sunrise too - sigh :) Thanks to Monica for sending me that link. It's lovely and goes perfectly with the ET video.

I hope everyone is having a good day.

Can you just imagine the two of them watching the sun rise together. Must take Jake back. Wild congratulations for Maggie, I'm so happy for her and the family. Can't wait to stay up all night and all morning watching everything live including the after parties. I love all that stuff when my favourites are a part of it.

I hope Maggie doesn't have a bird theme like a swan or duck dress. Something that's going to make her eyes pop even more. I look into her eyes and I see Jakes too, earnest, hopeful, cautious. Very proud to be a Gyllenhaalic today.

Me too, Sheba :D Normally, Maggie is quite reticent to talk about Jake so openly but her joy here is too much to keep in and Jake is too important a part of it. It's just wonderful.

Yes, it's time we formed Maggie's Dress Committee!! Hmmmm

Awww... so sweet!

I love that Maggie seemed to be talking more about her brother and his help than her own nomination!! We love it!! lol.

So now we know Jake is working *hee hee*

thanks for all the great info!

Hey Winterbird! It's so lovely :D

The working was referring to when Jake was nominated, but he'll soon be ready to go on Source Code. But hopefully not before he can be there with Maggie on her big day :D

Oh I love these inside glimpses! Maggie is so sweet. I hope we hear more, more, more. What happy times for this family!

Thanks WDW. Maybe we'll get surprised by some photos of some of the celebrating...hee hee!

Aww, such a beautiful thing to hear/read! So special that they had that time together and that Maggie is talking all about being at Jake's when the announcement came. :)

I do wish Jake had had that instead of having to work that day. Just means that he will have to have another nomination! :p And I really hope he can be there for her at the Oscars. Just wonderful stuff.

It feels so good, Get Real, that Jake was such an important part of Maggie's wonderful day - they'll remember it. I do so agree that it's a shame Jake had to work. I'm thinking Zodiac here. But yes it'll happen for him. This is all so wonderful! They're so lucky to have such a o
close relationship and be able to share these fantastic things in common :) A good day!

Hi there! Sorry for not calling in! I've seen Brothers, liked but not loved it (so glad I avoided reviews and spoilers) but looking forward, no doubt like BBMISwear, to DVD extras...

I have to admit I got distracted...by the Watchmen! Very left field, as our cousins would say, but when the black rabbit calls you...*-D

Anyway, all very enjoyable Jakewise too!

It's good to see you, TD, and thanks for telling us what you thought of Brothers :) It's not just you and BBMISwear waiting for those DVD extras! I didn't see the Watchmen but sounds like maybe I should watch out for it on DVD although I think it had Sienna Miller in it - ahem. :D

BBMISwear said...

DVD Extras?! Did someone say DVD Extras?! I love DVD Extras!! I've been excused by a certain someone of only watching the DVD Extras and NOT the actual movies! Not true! (Although the term we used that day was Bonus Features...same thing)!!

:-)

If it had Sienna Miller in it, I did not notice. If you do see it, see it at least twice: you won't understand a word of it the first time round, I know I didn't! I even got Donnie Darko the first time round, but not this one...
Good night!

Hi Gretchen - No but there is in the film I was muddling it up with :)

I updated the post with such a good interview with Maggie from Access Hollywood.

I'm so happy that Maggie was able to share her happiness with Jake and Peter. It's such a great nomination - I loved her in Crazy Heart. I love this interview - she's got such a beautiful voice and a lovely femininity about her. I noticed it first in TDK. I haven't seen her in anything else, just a little bit in Donnie Darko when she was younger.

And Jeff Bridges is like a walking work of art - he's so much the character. Very handsome. :)

Oh, I also can't wait to see what Maggie will be wearing. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Anon! Maggie has become such a beautiful woman - and a lot of it is about the eyes and that smile of her's. Just like her brother :D Yes, I can't wait to see the dress - what a lot of fun it'll be for her to choose!

It's lovely to hear and see all Maggie's excitement about her nomination and how Jake is sharing in it with her. Loved that bit about the two of them watching the sunrise:)

Really looking forward to seeing what she will be wearing on the night.

Well, it seems like I have been on another planet. I missed a few days of WDW due to RL events and came back to all kinds of goodies. Lovely pics of Jake with Maggie, Peter and that absolutely adorable little Ramona. And Maggie's Oscar nomination! How wonderful for her. And wonderful that she has a brother such as Jake to share the excitement with. I love the image of them being together on that early morning.

Morning everyone!

According to Extra TV today, Maggie said that Jake also made her pancakes. I want pancakes too! It's raining and I'm feeling needy :D

Morning Carol!

Hi Dani D This is such a great thing to catch up with.

Hi JoJo and welcome! Maggie looks absolutely over the moon and it's totally infectious. I'm so happy for her :)

Have a good day everyone! Can someone put the kettle on...

anouska said...

I can, WDW, but it might be three hours after you wanted the tea?

Lovely post! Good luck to Maggie -so difficult to know how it will all play when you only get to see the films after the fact.

On the subject of dresses, I loved what Maggie was wearing at the GGs.

I want pancakes too! I did put the kettle on, WDW, and I've had 3 cups of tea...but it's not working!

Is it Saturday yet?

So lovely to keep hearing/reading about Jake and Maggie sharing her big day. :D Pancakes...aww..

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nouskie! So good to see you :D Yes, it's odd seeing nominations for, and hearing about, films that have yet to make a showing over here. SO I'm counting on this being a good film :D Maggie's dress at the Globes was the best of the bunch.

Thnks to you and BBMISwear for putting the kettle on - I wouldn't mind something a little more edgy to drink now, though :)

Hey BBMISwear :-)

Waves to Get Real! Jake and pancakes in the same sentence - this is good!

This just gets better and better!

A few years ago, Maggie appeared in seven movies in a single calendar year. I saw them all. Her roles were quite diverse, and she nailed them all.

I think having a child has added to Maggie's range. The young boy in "Crazy Heart" is roughly the same age as Ramona. I think this helped the chemistry between the two onscreen. I look forward to seeing Maggie in substantial roles like this going forward. Audiences and critics alike have welcomed "Crazy heart." What do you call it when red states merge with blue states? Purple states?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

It really does, Paul, it's wonderful! Maggie's career is going to be exciting to follow. I've not been so sure about some of her films in the past but I'm certainly looking forward to what is to come :D
