Jake Gyllenhaal: 'I am inherently a little brother' and New Year's Eve films on New Year's Eve...

A great start to a new year today, Jake Gyllenhaal was in the Life and Style section of The Guardian newspaper, making my morning trip out for post-NYE tums and headnumbers well worth it. There are no new pictures and parts of it are familiar but other sections are new and wonderful.

'Upbringing is fascinating. Both my parents are extraordinary people. They were black sheep in their families. My mother's parents were doctors. My father came from a very small town in Pennsylvania. They were writers, working from job to job, trying to make movies together and still do to this day.'

We were raised in Los Angeles near the unfashionable Eastside. Home was like a circus, with writers and filmmakers coming in and out. We had a room above the garage rented by Steven Soderbergh – before he was Steven Soderbergh. We were brought up with a great respect of storytelling.'

'My mum raised us on classic movies and a lot of musical theatre. The first thing she ever took me to was Yul Brynner in The King and I, when I was three. I remember Guys and Dolls, and seeing Angels in America, the original show, when I was 13. I was mesmerised.'

'When I was young, before school, my father would wake me up and we would go running together. A love of being physical, being active and being outside was something he instilled in me. My parents also taught me to feel comfortable about my body. They told me that there is beauty in whatever you are. That belief has given me – and my sister [the actor Maggie Gyllenhaal] – more courage on a physical level to take chances in my work, like Brokeback Mountain or Love and Other Drugs, in which Annie [Hathaway] and I are naked for much of the time. So many movies are all about sex or love. I hope young people will see this movie and see that love and sex can actually be connected.'

'I am inherently a little brother – that's just my nature. It has to do with my sister being very strong and wanting to protect me. It's the natural order of things. That's the way my sister feels about me in every aspect of my life – my work, my relationships. Women have to pass her test. That's very hard for girlfriends. But I love that about Maggie. When we were younger, there was a typical sibling competition between us. She was always telling me what to do. I always lost – no matter what. We would put on a performance of Cats and I would be the poor lone cat sitting in the corner while my sister performed. I never got to be the star. But I really don't feel that competition any more. We are very different people. We care about seeing each other, we want to inspire each other.'

'Both my parents, my mother in particular, were always very socially conscious. My mother would say that there are people who have so much money who don't give any of it away and there other people who have much less money, who give more than the richest people in the world. It should all be about giving something back.'

'They were relatively progressive in their spiritual beliefs: my father is Christian and my mother is Jewish. On my 13th birthday, they thought it was important for me to experience a rite of passage, an entrance into manhood, and the consensus was that we would do something for the good of the community, some charitable work – a barmitzvah-like act, without the typical trappings. So we went to a homeless shelter and we did some work there and then I had the party – the celebration – there. We were taught by our parents that in the end family is all you've got. Family is all that matters.'

New Year's Eve

Not surprisingly for a film called New Year's Eve, filming was underway in Times Square last night. Although there is no mention of Jake filming last night, there was this tweet: 'last night was crazy. WB shot some scenes with me and my friends for a new movie with Jake Gyllenhall on Times Square.

However, Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted out about in NYC yesterday, jogging and shopping. Jake was seen at Mario Batali's famous Eataly marketplace and also at Tea and Sympathy, the store where you can buy anything British, including my favourite Brit tradition, Treacle Tart. No doubt Jake was looking for a birthday pressie. I did like this tweet from yesterday: 'My sister as we realize we've been walking by Jake Gyllenhaal in NYC, "He's even cuter in person...and he has pretty eyes... :D"'

Includes pictures from IHJ and JustJared.

Happy New Year!! :-D I'm sending out hugs to all of you and wish you all bucketloads of blessings.

Thanks for the nice review of the year in the previous post - quite a GyllenYear for me as it was my first! :-) Hope to have many, many more. I had a good laugh at that infamous Jake Bigfoot pic you posted with September. ;-)

"Women have to pass her test. That's very hard for girlfriends." Oh dear, I recognize that. I've been known to terrify my little bro's girlfriends just because I had my natural facial expression on at diner - which some say is an angry face. I prefer to call it concentrated. ;-)

Happy New Year, Sass! Jake does give good interviews when he's abroad for sure, I wonder if it's because he feels more detached. Interesting. This is a great interview. Good to see you, Sass *)

Hey Lady Ekster! Bucketloads of blessings to you too! x I have that kind of natural face too! I have to remind people it's usually because I can't hear them very well (I'm a little deaf) and so I'm concentrating!

Hi! I just lost the comment I wrote:(
Anyway, good post! THX WDW.
I like everything Jake tells about his family. They are so close. I said it many times. I repeat again. What the great parents Jake have. And his sister is funny. I'm sorry for all his girlfriends, previous and future :) that they had to pass the test. It was not easy probably:).
"I am inherently a little brother – that's just my nature." - sweet, my little brother was not so easy to cope with, maybe I was not so strong like Maggie.

So making NYE movie has started, we soon will know everything we need to know. It looks like Jake will take a part in it. According to twitter. And I'm glad. I want him so much :) to play again. It would be first movie Jake would have make since I know him. I hope it would be a chance to "sneak" on the set.

Jake was seen again on the train looking fine as always.

One more time. Easier to look at.

what a lovely interview. He has always said how much he loves his family and how close he is with them. I envy that, unfortunately I am not close with my family.

So it seems that Jake is doing the NYE movie. I just wished some interviewer had asked Jake if he had a new project on his plate.

I love the tweeters who let us know what Jake is up to. I remember visiting a place in Canada that had Scottish things in it. I knew there was a place in Manhattan where you could get British stuff.

I wonder what Jake ended up getting from there. I guess we'll find out when Jake is filming in the movie

Thanks, mermon, for the Jake pic of him on the subway. I wonder how often he hops on a train (and if he thinks of Source Code when he does :D)

I wonder what he's reading.

I read this morning about the filming and I am sorry to know that Jake will be in this movie, which will probably be one of the worst of the year. Those movies that you forget in a minute.
I still had some hope that he would not act in this movie.
What a shame.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Mermon! Thanks so much for the link to the pic - lovely! And just like us travelling on the tube/subway... I am very keen to see Jake making another movie too - this would do until something else comes along in the New Year :D

Hi Sweetpea! It's one of my favourite interviews for a while. I love the tweets too - love to see Jake getting up to ordinary things. I've been to shops like that when I'm in the states, usually after chocolate!

I've just done a cinema-goer's review of 2010 at MovieBrit

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Monica! Posting at the same time. This film will be quick and Jake won't be in it much so it shouldn't get in the way much - who knows, Jake may get to act with Robert de Niro! Best to see it before we get at it too much! (Then we can lay into it ;D)

A film directed by Gary Marshall says it all: it will be bad as all the films he directed.

And probably will be a failure. So we have two bad things: bad movie, bad box office.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'd prefer not to have to write it off straight away :D I do like to see movies before I judge them - and there is still no absolute confirmation Jake is in it. If he is, he'll have done it in a week and then he will give the film something worth seeing it for. As for Box Office, that always throws up surprises.

Monica said...

I also like to judge movies I see, but there are cases that is not necessary. Just look at who is behind the camera. Gary was never a good director. Do not know if I can tell he is a director!
The material says it will be bad. Simple.

I hope I have not offended you.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Monica! Ooh no you've definitely not offended me. I love a debate about movies. Personally, I can't talk in absolutes about something I've not seen yet. I'm prepared to be surprised while not hoping for much. My approach is to wait and see. I'm hoping, if Jake is doing it, that it'll soon be followed by a meaty role.

First part of NYE - Valentine's Day gross was $110,476,776 (USA) (2 May 2010). I think it was not so bad for a not best movie. I didn't like it too much, because I was so looking forward to see that, because of Taylor Lautner. And I was disappointed. His part was very modest and mediocre. He didn't have any on-screen chemistry with Taylor Swift. So that's was my reason. It was light movie, a bit funny, just for a date maybe, nothing deep. So probably NYE will be the same story, but I believe in Jake. He's charming, funny, knows how to play romance, I like the others actors too, so I will see that movie, probably without any pain.
And one more thing. Sometimes I wish Jake to come here and read what we write about him, but not this time. Because he even didn't start to work on that movie and is so many protests that it could be hard on him to find joy in that acting. Let's him do whatever he wants to. He made quite a lot serious movies, now he has different time in his life an makes some lighter movies. That's fine! It will be a lot in the future of many kind.

Mermon, Jake is a brilliant actor, as I said, he made several good films and I thought he would continue acting in big films, even though players have their ups and downs.
It's a bit annoying to see him walk for bad movies, a shame too. Of course he does what he wants, but as someone who follows him, I am entitled to say what I think about his work.
The same way I showed my disappointment when he accepted POP, I'm showing on this.

Romantic comedies like this are never funny, even when they bring the best actor in the world. If it is to do comedy, do some of Woody Allen.

mermon said...

@Monica - "The same way I showed my disappointment when he accepted POP, I'm showing on this."

And thx God he accepted, because POP it is one of my favourite movies :) and because of it I'm here on his blog!

Right now on my TV is "Highway", so I'm off to watch it. Pilot is adorable. They've just met Cassandra and are all together in the car.
Good night!

Monica, with all due respect: your opinion is welcome. I say this as a reader here. But expressing your opinion once is enough. You're sufficiently eloquent, trust me: we get your point. We got it the last time too. ;-)

You need to chill: have you watched "Groundhog Day" yet? I can't wait to see how you tear it apart. Just kidding. :-P

If Jake is in NYE, I'll watch it. Have no doubts. Hopefully, I'll see the good things in it and I'll come out of the cinema with less prejudice. I'll probably come out feeling happy. And wanting to see it again. Not gonna lie. ;-)

And I hate my optimistic side!!! But this year started with a sweet surprise for me and... I'm beaming with good vibes! Hope everyone gets a million chances this year to smile huge smiles.

Monica said...

Good for you, and bad for me.

I saw only POP three times and the third was enough. The first was good only for him, in the second film seemed better, but when I went to see on DVD, it was difficult. Very difficult.

Monica said...

I was responding to Mermon.

Have not seen "Groundhog Day ". I saw The Social Network. Really a great movie.
Unforgettable.

Just Fan said...

Jake looks so cute in the subway picture. Thanks mermon.

I've got to admit, I'm not very happy about Jake doing NYE. But it's his decision ultimately. I hope we'll see him in better movies in the future.

Monica, I'm sure you'll enjoy Groundhog Day. It's a great movie. :)

Thanks for the update WDW. :)

"A film directed by Gary Marshall says it all: it will be bad as all the films he directed."

As an American and a film lover, I am offended. Apparently you have not seen Gary Marshall's classic films. The reason the first movie did so well besides the cast was Gary Marshall's reputation as a film maker which is why he was able to get such big named actors before and this time around. The movies are meant to be "no thinking" movies, not everything in Hollywood as to a Brokeback Mountain. Quite frankly Valentine's Day in my opinion mirrored looking for real life love. You strike out but keep tyring and actors playing teenagers shouldn't have chemistry, it should be awkard because that's way it is when you are teenagers, awkard.

Monica go watch- Overboard, The Princess Dairies with Anne, Pretty Woman which made Julia Roberts an icon and The Other Sister was totally underated.
Jake ain't stupid, he can't turned down Gary Marshall twice. Gary Marshall is an film maker icon and Jake knows that.

Monica said...

I've seen all the movies you mentioned, Anon. All are more of the same.

Sorry, I do not want to be rude, but he's a terrible director. One of the worst.

not everything in Hollywood as to a Brokeback Mountain

That is sad. We should have more films like The Social Network, I Am Love, Animal Kingdon, Lars And The Real Girl, I'm Not There, Inception, Winters Bone, An Education ...

Jake ain't stupid, he can't turned down Gary Marshall twice. Gary Marshall is an film maker icon and Jake knows that.

So he said not to Garry Marshall in the past? See, if Garry Marshall is a great director, would be a crime say no to him, with all commenting: "Jake said no to the great Garry Marshall!"

But this did not happen.

This occurred when he said no to James Cameron.

mermon said...

What an interesting conversation we have here!
@Monika - so you watched POP 3 times? So it wasn't that bad for you. I don't know what nationality you are, but from some mysterious for me reasons Americans didn't like that movie, the rest of the world seemed to enjoyed it or loved, like me. That's the riddle, difficult to solve. Maybe it's because of British accent, which for me was very appealing. Jake was very excited doing POP, had a chance to work with David Belle, learned to sword fighting, spent great time in Morocco, was happy to work with sir Ben, Jerry Bruckheimer, Mike Newell. It was a kind of adventure for him. I think it is important to have a joy from a work we do. And I can find that joy in the movie.
About Garry Marshall - I didn't even know he was a director of so many movies I like. You made me realised that :) Overboard, Beaches(!),Pretty Woman and the others you mentioned already. I think is nothing to be ashamed of being an actor in GM movies. Good comedies with some romance in it.

Robert de Niro - a real movie star was not afraid to play in "Meet the parents/Meet the Fockers" movies and he was great as an ex CIA agent - future father in low. I know at least one person, who doesn't like those movies :), but does it means that he's no longer appreciated?
I think our Jake does just fine. He's that kind of actor he could play any role and be good in it. I accept him totally and his choices too.
But it is a fun that we have different opinions here and may discuss.

POP will never be a failure to me, Dastan is my favoriate:).
Happy to hear him start to film a new movie. Hope this year is a wondeful year to Jake :)

When did Jake say no to Garry Marshall?

I have to wonder what would have happened if he had said yes to Avatar? I mean I do like the actor who did end up getting the role. someone I had not seen before (and easy on the eyes too :D)

Hello everyone! Been having a major sort out. I seem to have the springcleaning bug early! And I decided to not have any kind of internet distractions - But done now :D

Interesting discussion! Thanks for keeping it polite and friendly. Jake has made such a wide variety of movies it wouldn't be possible for each of us to like them all equally. Jake has said he makes movies to create a debate and he does manage that with his choices. But just as there was some doubt by some when it was announced Jake was making PoP (I just loved the idea from the outset), there is bound to be comment when Jake goes for something like NYE, which, if he does do it, will be a toughie for me, but I'll get over it and I'll enjoy watching the movie process, just as I do with every film, even if the result isn't my favourite.

Jake's made movies before I haven't liked although I have seen them. It's par for the course following any actor I would have thought.

But one thing's for sure, we're each entitled to an opinion and this is a blog about Jake and his movies after all.

The turning down Avatar situation was very interesting. As I've said before, I am so glad Jake didn't do it even though I like Avatar.

Good to see you all! Hope you're having a good Sunday. Such a quiet one here.

mermon said...

I've just read yesterday about Avatar, that Cameron's heart went straight to Sam Worthington - Australian actor, but to please I think producers he proposed a role to Jake and Matt Damon as well. You know - famous names - bring money. They both didn't accept the role. James was quite satisfied having Sam on board. I don't have any opinion about Jake as Jake Sully. It's difficult to say. Would he be good in that role? I just don't know, I can't imagine that. Sam was so good and appropriate. Avatar made a real star of him.

The same with Moulin Rouge - the other wonderful movie. This time Jake wanted to play in it. Heath Legder too. I read yesterday some interview with Jake when he was joking, that the fact they both loose to Ewan McGregor made them friends. As much as I would like to see Jake in some musical, I just loved Ewan in Moulin Rouge. He was perfect. So it's some destiny for actor to make right choices. I think that that kind of role for Jake was being Jack Twist in BBM. I just can't imagine anyone else. The same with Heath as Ennis. They both were just perfect for each other. it was amazing chemistry between them.

Monica said...

Mermon, I saw POP because of Jake. The first was good because for a long time I did not see Jake on the big screen. The second time it seemed best to me.
But in the third it seemed bad, very bad.

I love versatility, but the characters must be good. Nicole Kidman has several different roles in recent years, but everyone was very bad, the movies were bad too.
Apparently she found a great character in Rabbit Hole.

He should not have said no to Avatar. Jake Sully is an interesting character and Jake would have given a good performance. The film's success would have been very good for him.

I know that Baz Luhrman shooting tests, then he must have somewhere to fox the testing of Jake and Heath as Christian. It would be interesting to see.
