Time to Stand Up to Cancer - and Jake Gyllenhaal attracts

Tonight is the night that the stars will come out to stand up to cancer. It's not known for sure whether Jake Gyllenhaal will be among them at the Telethon or if his contribution will stand as the two TV spots shown in July but, irrespective of that, this is a great cause. No guarantees that this will work, but you should be able to watch the telethon below at the appointed time, which is 8pm EST and 1am BST.



Jake Gyllenhaal attracts

Gemma Arterton's new film, Tamara Drew, opened in the UK today (and I was lucky enough to see it) and as part of the publicity there has been the occasional mention of a recent co-star - and I don't mean Daniel Craig. One article came up with some helpful suggestions for Jake's appeal, to which we can no doubt add a couple of thousand.


1. He is devastatingly handsome.
2. He is lovely, amiable and friendly.
3. He has a sense of wit.
4. And despite mega fame, he is extremely grounded and humble.
[5. Your suggestions please.]


Gemma's own suggestion: 'The nicest thing about Jake is that he’s such a lovely, funny, kind and down-to-earth guy.' Can I add hot?


I don't link to the Daily Mail lightly, but they do have a rather complimentary feature about Jake today. There are some old quotes from Jake but there is a mention of 'the quietly beautiful Brokeback'. I like that.

Jake Gyllenhaal Stands Up 2 Cancer and Nailed loses David O Russell

'We believe that when we all stand up together, we can make cancer history' - this is the message of Jake Gyllenhaal's PSA for Stand Up To Cancer, which aired last night during the MLB All-Star Game. There are two versions of the announcement - below, is the shorter.



In the longer PSA Jake and director Scott Coper talk about the impact of cancer on their own lives, including the loss of Jake's uncle. It does indeed affect us all, I know this too well like many of you, I am sure. Therefore if you'd like to donate to SU2C, please go to their site now.



Nailed Saga Chapter 426

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that David O Russell has left Nailed and now considers the film not his own. Nailed will now be finished with a new director.

A pause while the implications of this sink in.... This is sad news indeed - Russell put two years into that film, not just in (almost) making it, in the face of repeated shutdowns, but also fighting behind the scenes for the last year to keep it alive. There are a couple of key scenes still to shoot. The positive to draw from the news is that the financers are still maintaining that Nailed will be finished. Here is Russell's statement.


"This has been a painful process for me," Russell told THR on Tuesday. "The multiple production delays and stoppages, which were caused by David Bergstein and preceded Ron Tutor's direct involvement with me, have now spanned two years, and the circumstances under which the film would now be completed are much different on several fundamental levels than when we embarked several years ago. I, unfortunately, am no longer involved in the project and cannot call it 'my' film. I wish Ron Tutor well."


'Tutor also expressed his disappointment in an interview last week with THR: "(David O.) Russell conducted himself like a perfect gentleman. I understood his position. It really didn't have anything to do with him but with others, and we just reached a point where I couldn't do what he wanted. But it was a decent negotiation between the two of us. No lawyers. No idle threats, just two people trying to clean something up, and we couldn't get there. It was surprising and disappointing, but I understood." Added Tutor, "So we're going to go ahead probably with 'Nailed' and try to hire another director and finish it."'

This does give some hope: 'To do the reshoots, stars Biel and Tracy Morgan will be required to participate. Bergstein has said that there are contracts with these actors requiring them to do the reshoots without additional compensation.' Also that there is already an edited version of the film. And so the Nailed saga continues...

Jake Gyllenhaal to head the Stand Up To Cancer TV spot tonight, and Donnie Darko released on Blu-ray

This evening, Jake Gyllenhaal will head a public service announcement for Stand Up To Cancer. The spot will air during the Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game (which begins at 8pm Eastern Time) and 'draws parallels between victory in baseball and the triumph of beating cancer through teamwork and collaboration with the message that an end to cancer is now beyond a dream; it is within reach.' The spot is in advance of a TV special for the charity which will be shown across networks in the US in September.


We've recently seen the very physical evidence of Jake's support for Stand Up To Cancer with his hoodie worn last month (perhaps a gift from the commercial shoot?). It is very good indeed to see this addition to the long list of charities that Jake supports - planting trees in Mozambique, encouraging young people to vote, New Eyes for the Needy, gay rights, the Green Schools initiative in LA, ACLU, literacy, Global Green, young readers and writers in prison, Haiti and LiveStrong (and no doubt I've missed a bunch).








On top of this, we've also seen Jake in films with a message, however entertaining that message has been - The Day After Tomorrow, Brokeback Mountain and Rendition, to name just three. There was, no doubt, a message in Donnie Darko, but I don't think I understand it (maybe something to do with smurfs).


Back on MV...

After recent sightings of Jake enjoying his holidays in Martha's Vineyard, there was another posted today - after previously 'yukking', this time he was supping - in the Chilmark Tavern. I can't post a picture of Jake in the Tavern but I can post a picture of the Tavern, which wasn't at all how I expected when I saw it. Much more intimate, friendly and low-key (even has a cashpoint).


Donnie Darko reborn on blu-ray

While we await the release of Prince of Persia in September, you could do far worse that spend some money on the release of Donnie Darko on Blu-ray. Ou on 19 July in the UK, Total Film has awarded this extraordinary film with 5 stars. It is clear that, despite this film being placed squarely in the culture of the 1980s and despite it playing with time, this movie remains a timeless classic. And when one wonders, as TF does here, what is it about this tale that still exerts such a pull. It's almost impossible to put a finger on it - maybe it's because it's almost everything about it.


This edition includes both versions (I can never decide which opening scene I prefer) and Jake's wonderful commentary. There are also some fun accompanying scenes, including Jake entertaining the crew with his infamous Irish jig. I can still only look at that through latticed fingers...
