Last night, the 17th Hollywood Film Awards honoured Jake Gyllenhaal with its Supporting Actor Award for Prisoners, hopefully, the first in a long string of gongs that will adorn Jake's mantelpiece over the coming Silly Season. The award was presented to Jake by Viola Davis, one of Jake's Prisoners co-stars

Jake bedecks the cover of November's Australian GQ magazine and it's a great interview. For instance: 'I really, really love listening to really poppy music. I play a lot of intense characters and going the other way can help. Sometimes if you listen to something that’s the complete opposite of the feeling you’re having, you can dive even deeper. Somehow you’re not thinking so much. And then bam, you’re in it. I’m obsessed with food. I love eating in general, but if I’m somewhere on location, I tend to find one restaurant and weirdly will eat one or two things that I love. Then I’ll know I’m going there at the end of the day to eat that thing. It’s like a strange catharsis to me. I don’t know what it does… but it kind of breaks the boundaries of something that’s different to what my character would eat.'

And on how Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain and End of Watch changed his life: '"These movies are markers on my path and life. We all have them in different ways,” he says. “Mine are a little absurd and happen to be movies, but all I have is the experience of those movies and they’ve all been extraordinary in their own way.” It’s clear he loves what he does, but is under no illusions that he’s performing brain surgery. He likes a laugh, and tries to keep things light on set, even when the material is dark. “I’m devoted to what I do and I take it seriously,” he says, “but I have a sense of humour, too.”'

Here is Hugh Jackman's summary of Jake: '“Oh, Jake’s hilarious, he’s a cheeky bugger,” says Jackman. “We became good friends, and he’s a good mate to have.”' I like that.

Jake Gyllenhaal video update - plus Viola Davis joins Prisoners

Prisoners is growing by the week. This week it was revealed that Viola Davis - fresh from appearing in Won't Back Down with Maggie Gyllenhaal - is joining Jake, Hugh Jackman, Melissa Leo and Paul Dano. Good to also hear that plans are afoot to sell the movie to international distributors this week.

Meanwhile If There Is... continues to grab attention. The play is in full swing again after Hurricane Sandy with Jake back to handing out hugs. Yesterday Jake and co-star Brian O'Byrne spoke with NY1 about the play. Thanks to IHJ for the link.



Jake's latest movie End of Watch has yet to reach many of us and so the buzz is still buzzing. In this article, Jake and Michael Pena chat about director David Ayer's manner of praise and Michael marvels at Jake's intense appreciation for yoghurt.

'"His response to liking something is, 'That didn't suck,'" Jake laughed. Michael added: "'That sucked less.' Or, 'Do some other sh*t.' In rehearsals too, he was really rough."' The two actors added they nicknamed the script talks with David 'Poison Meetings' as he was always so open with them. He was never afraid to pull them up on things which weren't quite right, with both men admitting the movie is better for it. '"They really worked. They got you motivated," Michael said. "They'd usually come after sparring, after we'd gone home and showered quickly or whatever."'

'Michael worked hard to stay in shape for the movie. Jake didn't have to work out quite so much and wasn't always thoughtful when it came to his co-star's diet. "Remember dude, with your [frozen yoghurt] when you were like, 'Mmmm! Oh my God, it's so good! Mike, you want some?’" Michael laughed. Jake giggled: "Then I said, 'You wanna go for a run later?'"'

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena's chemistry in End of Watch didn't come naturally, and Won't Back Down screens in NYC

It has been one of those weeks - extremely slow on the Jake Gyllenhaal News Front but as speedy as you like in the World of Sport. Fortunately, while Jake is busy learning his lines for If There Is (not one of his favourite activities judging from reports during his stage appearance in London - his father was so worried about Jake forgetting his lines he wrote a poem about it), we have that little sporting event the Olympics to enjoy. I'm now an expert on sports I didn't know existed a fortnight ago.

End of Watch draws ever nearer - and even more so too with the suggestion that its release may be moving forwards in countries other than the US. It has a page in Total Film's September Buzz section, which you can see here. There is a fascinating segment in it about how Jake and Michael Pena had to work at that essential chemistry. 

Michael: 'There was not much we had in common... Jake grew up in Hollywood, his mum's a screenwriter, his dad's a director. My parents were farmers. I'm sure he worked really hard too, but I had to work hard just to get enough money to go to Hollywood.' In the end, though, chemistry and mutual respect won out, perhaps even more so because each of them had to work on it. Thanks to IHJ for  the picture.

Won't Back Down

Meanwhile, Maggie has a whole line of movies in the offing. The latest is Won't Back Down and last Friday there was a premiere screening in NYC. There are lots of pictures here - the one below features Maggie with co-stars Viola Davies and Rosie Perez.
