[Updated] The Love and Other Drugs Pajama Party! The GyllenGuide to what to wear and what not to wear

Actress Katheryn Winnick is in Love and Other Drugs and yesterday, in a passing tweet aboout filming, she happened to drop a bombshell: 'Shooting pajama party scene's today. Lot's of beautiful people in itsy bitsy clothing..' Yes, my fellow Gyllenhaalics, we're talking 'pajama party', 'beautiful people', 'itsy bitsy clothing'. While it is conceivable - although downright unreasonable and miserable to suggest so - that Katheryn is referring to a non-Jake-Gyllenhaal scene, I like to think that Ed Zwick knows very well what we want and he's going to give it to us - in jimjams.


Of course, Ed Zwick would be following a long and fine tradition. Directors have fitted Jake Gyllenhaal out in night attire for almost a decade. It is equally true to say that sometimes the directors have forgotten to actually provide Jake with night attire, presumably due to high temperatures under those studio lights.


Never one to put my own needs above those of science and the greater common good, I thought I would conduct some meticulous and arduous research and so aid Ed Zwick and future Jake directors in their vital pajama research.


Pajamas

Jimmy Livingston would have been king of the pajama party. He not only had train pajamas (as, surely, 98% of all men would if allowed ), he had cowboy jammies. It's possible that Jake's decision to take on the role of Jack Twist was a direct consequence of these little cowboys.



Pajamas are not just for sleeping in

Pajamas have to be put through a range of night time activities and so should be up to the task. Look no further than Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko didn't just sleep in pajamas, he cycled up and down mountains in them.


He even played golf wearing them (or at least slept on golf greens which is about as exciting).


Short versus long

In the commentary to Moonlight Mile, Jake wondered whether his bum looked saggy in his bedtime boxers. Whether it did or not is redundant because Joe Nast was continually modelling these shorts up and down the hallway and constantly had a bedside audience in a household where the main night time activity was watching Joe Nast sleep.


Sometimes, Joe did manage to break free but he couldn't take it all with him.



Socks and shorts

While filming Zodiac, Jake developed his taste for socks as the all-round, all-purpose accessory. Maybe if one wears socks all the time it means you can't lose them.


On and off

Sometimes a director must make allowances for Jake not being able to make up his mind: On?


Or off...?


Camping on chilly mountain tops

Of course, on a mountain top, conditions can vary enormously, meaning that sometimes one has to wear the full sheep coat pajama set. No high performance North Face then...


But sometimes it warms up nicely.


One wonders what early medieval Persian pajamas will look like?

Katheryn has just posted a picture from the filming! Unfortunately while we have itsy bitsy clothing and beautiful people, Jake appears to be absent. I like to think he was in the kitchen making some tea or breakfast when this was taken...


Updated to add: A guy involved with the LAOD shoot has this evening tweeted about the scene: 'Days 2 on "Love and Other Drugs" and the clothes comes off. Shooting same scene as yesterday but now it's an orgy. I have a pretty good job'. One day a pajama party, the next an orgy... it's like watching a teenager grow up.

[Update] It's great to update the post with a much longed for picture of Jake Gyllenhaal on the set of Love and Other Drugs! I'm loving the slovenly untucked and reckless shirt, the careless tie, the in-your-face hair, the cool shades and the even cooler, sexy 'don't mess with me I work for Pfizer' expression... Please note that at no time am I mentioning the sandals and the socks. I know 1997 shoes could be uncomfortable but even so... Good thing they're Nike. Thanks IHJ!


[Updated update] And now looking hotter than I have adjectives to describe, here is Jake (minus the feet) meeting a fan at the Grand Concourse restaurant. Today comes good news for the few remaining inhabitants of Pittsburgh who have yet to sign on as an extra for Love and Other Drugs and who may even have been fearing that they would have to make do with a walk on part in the Russell Crowe movie being filmed down the street. Rescue is at hand, especially if, like me, you haven't cleared out your wardrobe for 12 years. There is no payment - except a donation made to charity - and you would have to spend upwards of 12 hours in the company of Jake Gyllenhaal. It's a tough job but someone (well, 400 people) has to do it. More info here - let us hope that someone gets a picture (make a note of the date and venue - 13 October at the Mellon Arena).


You will have noticed that this post is full of past and present Jake Incarnations. This follows on from my 1000th commemorative post from the other day. After looking at the film moments that have particularly stuck in my mind, I thought it would be fun to see in which of these wonderful roles Jake has made (or will make) your heart miss the most beats. I'm talking hotness here. The poll is at the side here and you can vote for more than one - this is because I suspect many people would vote for Jack Twist. Last night, the NYC premiere of An Education took place at the Paris Theater, giving Maggie Gyllenhaal the chance to support hubby Peter and his co-star Carey Mulligan.

On the trail of Jake Gyllenhaal plus some Peter and some Moon SFX

Jake Gyllenhaal is nothing if not elusive and so I've spent the last day or so trying to follow the breadcrumbs he's left for the Twitters. Over the last couple of days, Jake has been seen in at least two airports, aboard at least one plane, in at least one coffee shop, in at least two cities and attending at least one sporting occasion and possibly a party or two. That's what I call a weekend.


The latest sightings place Jake (probably) safely back in front of the camera in Pittsburgh but certainly in that town at least because several people saw Jake at the Steelers' football game last night. Unfathomably, it appears that most people and most camera people were focused on the game and not on the hot movie star in their midst and so, alas, there are as yet no pictures.


Jake wasn't just seen in Pittsburgh's Airport, he was also seen at the airport in NYC where he charmed people with Spider-man talk. I'm starting to think that Jake must spend at least 50% of every single day telling everyone he's Tobey Maguire. I'm equally convinced Tobey does the same thing in reverse - it's a good job Natalie Portman has her wits about her. The full report is here.

Now that Jake is more than likely back at work after a weekend presumably passing the parcel with Ramona, there's time to catch up with Ramona's dad who continues to charm the world's film critics.


There is a great interview with Peter Sarsgaard on Movieline, which reveals that Peter did all in his power not to see An Education for as long as possible. He also chats some more about The English Accent. 'Q: What’s even trickier about a British accent is that those can be traced down to the very block you grew up on. And British people know— PS: They know their shit, yeah. I just didn’t sweat it that much. [Laughs] I remember the dialect coach said, “Well, a lot of the British actors in this don’t have the correct dialect for what their character would have.” There’s not that level of specificity in this movie.'


Rather intriguingly, Peter talks here about his involvement in the casting of Carey Mulligan in the film, while she has talked before about how she was instrumental in getting Peter his role in The Seagull. Clearly, these are two actors who are omfortable together, and thoroughly enjoy the experience of working together and taking the p**s out of one another:



More Moon SFX details from Doug

Doug Liman has been talking to the Ninjas again, with more fascinating details about trying to visualise the Moon in the movie that remains unnamed. Doug makes it clear that this is make or break time for the project. If nobody is excited by what he's proposing, in terms of the visualisation of the moon and action upon it, then nobody will want to make the film, including himself. We must therefore hope to high heavens that Doug pulls together this crucial phase and we can get to enjoy a movie with which Jake is so deeply involved. A full account here. A thousand movie moments that made a Gyllenhaalic

What with all the excitement of Jake Gyllenhaal sweating in the Burgh, the 1000th WDW post occurred last week. To mark the occasion, I thought I would have a think about some of those movie moments which have stuck out in my mind even more than the multitude of other movie moments which have made a Gyllenhaalic out of me. It would be wonderful if they triggered some memories of your own, at a time when we're getting more than ready to welcome some more, courtesy of Brothers and Prince of Persia.

So, in no particular order... Joe and Bertie's Moonlight Mile dance. I am not able to watch this scene without a million shivers creeping down my spine.



Jake's movies often exert a musical pull and the Killing Moon beginning of Donnie Darko is dynamite.



Swoff in the desert watching and feeling the oil fall and leaving white steps in black ash.



The spectacle of The Day After Tomorrow, with my favourite scenes being the 'Tell her how you feel' moment in the library and Wet Sam dodging tidal waves by leaping over cars. As a Brit, how could I not have fallen for this meteorological delight?



There's not much for me that can beat the opening credit sequence of Zodiac, with the arrival of both the letter and Graysmith to the Chronicle offices. Later on there was the first time that I have ever been really scared in a Jake movie - I'm talking basements, as noone has a basement in California.

Other scenes that I recall are Swoff calming the frightened, oil sodden horse, Dustin Hoffman kissing Jake's forehead as his character realises he can't cling on to his daughter anymore, and Donnie's authoritative Smurf lecture. It'll be impossible to forget Jake's opening scene in Rendition for obvious reasons. But above and beyond all is the first time we set eyes on Jack Twist and the last time he sets eyes on Ennis del Mar and remembers that embrace. Plus about every other minute of Brokeback Mountain.

There are so many extras in Love and Other drugs that the supply of Pittsburgh people (Pittsburghians? Pittsburgs?) has now dried up. The producers are having to resort to new methods to get people to spend a minimum of 12 hours in the company of Jake Gyllenhaal. Here is where they're going wrong - they would only have to look in my direction and I'd be there for a minimum of 12 days but, instead, they're now bribing potential extras by giving them snacks and offering money to habitat construction charities. While I would never turn down a jaffa cake to work with Jake Gyllenhaal, I wouldn't like a casting agency to think I demand it. More here.


Last night An Education continued its pre-award season trailblazing with an LA premiere. As well as doing a very good job of showing off Carey Mulligan, Peter Sarsgaard also talked more about working in England. He will miss the football. As this is a British blog, I'll leave out the inverted commas around football, whilst also assuming that Peter is referring to Man Utd.


'The US actor premiered his new movie An Education in Hollywood and told reporters the best part about living in England was "football". As for the movie, set in 60s Britain, Peter explained it was important to make sure certain elements were factually correct, saying: "We had the Brits keeping us accurate about, you know, how to make the tea - those details are great."' I admit it's complicated - you put a teabag in a cup, pour water on it and add milk to taste. As the subject of tea has popped up, I recall a recent trip to the US when I asked in a cafe what type of tea they served. 'It's in a bag,' they replied. More from Peter here.


Peter also let loose that his next movie will take him to Boston: 'He revealed he’s about to leave for Boston to be in director James Mangold’s “Wichita” opposite Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. When I asked what character he’d be playing, he’d only say he was Tom Cruise’s foil. Does that mean he’s the villain? I don’t know. But I do know he hadn’t been announced as part of the cast yet.'


Another site has dropped hints to a future, revealing interview with Peter, conducted in Toronto: In it, 'he spoke pretty forthrightly about why “K-19” and “Jarhead” didn’t do well at the box office, who his initial fan base was (“Very, very damaged women”), what his choices are like (“I don’t have the pick of the litter”) and why he never wants to make a big movie with his wife.' Clifton Collins Jr has been talking about Brothers again as he continues to promote his zombie movie: 'I just wanted to collaborate with [Jim] and work with him and that's what he does. He's a big collaborator and he's all about the truth, and the truth of the scene and the honesty in it. Working with Toby (Maguire), he's an old friend and (Jake) Gyllenhaal, who I got to know during the Brokeback and Capote days, you know with doing the Oscar circuits and stuff. That, Sam Shepard and Natalie Portman, who I've had a crush on for I don't know how long. She's beautiful and talented and smart and really precious, truth be told. She's a special girl and it was a dream job. It was hard, emotionally, in a lot of different ways. Brad Renfro passed and I thought about Heath (Ledger) passing, literally minutes before they shot my big close-up when I'm debriefing Toby. It was a tough thing just to keep it together and try to act and to have all this new dialogue that Jim, Toby and myself came up with. But I have high hopes for it. It's an incredible script and it's based off a Danish film, which I've heard is amazing. I haven't had a chance to see it.'

'Everybody put their heart and soul into it and I cried my eyes out on more than one occasion, just doing military research and all this stuff. Yeah, it definitely deserves and we definitely put our heart into it.' More here.

Jake Gyllenhaal is hot, that's for sure, even when the sweat is sprayed on.
