Zodiac's barebones DVD and Jake 'owns' Hollywood?

In a little over two weeks the DVD of Zodiac hits the shelves in the US - as well as winging its merry way over the oceans into the multiregional DVD players of the world. But it's a crying shame to learn that what we're going to get on 27 July is a 'make do', bare bones edition, with absolutely nothing extra on it at all - no commentary, no deleted scenes, no features - nothing. This ensures that - unless you have better will power than me - many of us will end up buying two versions of this DVD, at least.

This is what one disappointed reviewer (at DVD Review) has to say: "I was totally fired up after seeing the movie to learn more about the real Zodiac murders and was eagerly looking for the Special Features section only to find none. Wow, what a bummer. Here we have a remarkable film based on real events and the studio lets its customers down by adding not a single feature. In fact, to add insult to injury, the first thing you'll see when selecting the "Previews" section of the disc is a trailer for an upcoming "Zodiac: Director's Cut" version, complete with commentary track, featurettes and interviews with some of the original investigation members. Everything you're hoping for. Of course I am all excited about that, but the fact that Paramount makes you buy this version only to tell you that another, fatter version is coming in 2008 deserves a slap on the wrist. Studios should put their cards on the table and tell people about these plans in advance, giving their customers the chance to decide which version they want to purchase instead of trying to sucker them into buying titles multiple times."

I'm sure I'm not the only one here with a mini collection of Brokeback Mountain DVD issues, all of which have been disappointing. Films such as Brokeback Mountain and Zodiac deserve better. At least, with Zodiac, there is reason to hope that the forthcoming 2008 version will be superb - the studio has certainly given itself enough time to do justice to this meticulous film - and we already know that Jake Gyllenhaal has recorded a commentary. Yet, this initial release doesn't even have any packaging to speak of and little effort appears to have been put into the ghastly cover - the whole thing smacks of indecent haste and a marketing scheme to recover extra revenue for this film (so obviously suited to a DVD format) through multiple DVD releases.

Elsewhere, Stuff magazine released its power list. Its list of Power Guys Under 30 puts Justin Timberlake at no. 1, Tom Brady (New England footballer) at no. 2, LeBron James (Cleveland basketballer) at no. 3, Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook.com founder) at no. 4 and at no. 5 is 'silver screen stud' Jake Gyllenhaal who, according to Stuff, 'basically owns Hollywood'.

Basically owns Hollywood? I'm not certain what they mean - how can a young actor aged just 26 own Hollywood? If they mean that Jake is now in a position where he is offered, and can take his pick from, all of the best roles for young men in the movie industry, then I think that's probably a fair statement. The sportsmen in the list have been praised for breathing new life into their teams and representing their sport to the highest ability; Zuckerberg has captivated countless masses with Facebook, arguably revolutionising the way many people think of and use the internet; Timberlake has, I suppose, crossed genres and media (although I would challenge the no. 1 position). Jake at an equally young age has surpassed other actors of his generation with a succession of hugely influential, different, challenging and difficult roles, continually testing himself and drawing a response from filmgoers and critics. Arguably, more is expected from this young actor than from any other of his generation. Talk about pressure.

Hi WDW. I have to say that I think I will wait for the special edition Zodiac DVD with the extras. I hate that they are doing this and I'm not going to buy more than one copy of a DVD. Well, maybe in exceptional circumstances, but this isn't one of them. I can wait.

I too wondered what 'owns Hollywood' meant. Probably like you say - he has a wide range of offers. I certainly hope so. I recall reading comments from the time he signed up for Brokeback, about how his career would be ruined by it. hehehe, how wrong they were!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby - if only I had your strength! Unfortunately, I'm a Zodiac nut and I can't wait for the next edition. The film itself will have to be enough.

This has made me think - I realise I have two versions of Jarhead, three of BBM (and one of those is wearing out ;D ), two versions of Donnie Darko, plus a Jake Gyllenhaal Collection which just looks good on a shelf. The DDarko and Jarhead versions I can understand because they are very different editions, but the BBM copies were just wishful thinking.

Oh yes, Jake's career clearly suffered a setback when he signed up for Jack Twist - NOT!

Because it's you, Ruby, I think I'll have a glass of wine :D

Because it's you, Ruby, I think I'll have a glass of wine :D

Well all right then, maybe I'll join you!

I have two editions of DD (the original film with loads of extras and the Director's Cut), Mr Ruby spent some time on eBay for me to get the Collectors Edition of Jarhead (my hero!). For the others I just have whatever was easily available at the time.

I think I wait to see Zodiac again. And we have Rendition to look forward to afterall.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Cheers Ruby - having a Californian red in honour of my favourite Californian man :D

I hope I wasn't a bidder against Mr Ruby because that's where I got my beloved collector's edition of Jarhead too. Well worth every penny.

Not long to Rendition, that's true. I can't wait, not least because, as you know, that's my favourite Jake look :D

Hi guys,

Hmmmm . . . not sure what I think of a no-frills version of Zodiac. I was kinda looking forward to one with extras! Oh well - I'm still probably gonna buy it. :) I know what you mean, WDW, about that Jake Gyllenhaal video collection looking good on a shelf - I've been considering getting that too! :)

I'm so thrilled about that article saying that Jake owns Hollywood; to me, it means that he has lots of offers and his choice of roles. I knew it - how could he not with that incredible performance of Jack Twist. I've rarely seen anything so good and so moving. I'm happy that we'll be able to see his wonderful work for a long time, if he decides to stay with acting as a career. We all should have a glass of wine to celebrate Jake's success, or let's crack open a bottle of champagne!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Marina! Yes you should get the collection - it just looks good, kind of like an award on the shelf :D

As we've said so many times, Jake sets no store by polls, but this is all good. It just shows how prominent Jake is in the minds of many and that great things are expected from him.

So yes let's crack open the champagne - oops, not got any - let's crack open the wine and toast Jake! :D

WDW, it's pretty bad when the studios know they've got us, isn't it? To "tell" us that they are going to have a second, special edition of Zodiac coming out in 2008! Oh well . . .

You're right, let's save the virtual champagne for Jake's Academy Award win! :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I know Marina, they're taking us for granted. But, I suppose, at least we know this time that another version is coming out and having the film alone on DVD from 27 July will keep me going til then.

Imagine the night Jake wins his Academy Award - as he will. How will we survive that!!

Thanks, WDW, for this very important information. I can't believe I am going to say this, but I think I will wait for the better version of Zodiac to be released. I already have multiple copies of Jarhead, BBM and DD. If it wasn't for that ghastly photo on the DVD, I might go ahead and fork over the bucks. It's never really about money with Jake. I don't even want to think of how much I have spent because of him. It's all worth it. I just don't think Jake or this film deserves the shoddy way it is being presented. Now, this doesn't mean that I won't be at the video store the second it opens to once again see this incredible movie that I haven't viewed since March! I'll rent it as many times as I have to while I wait for the propper DVD. Thank God for Rendition. The anticipation and the actual debut of it will hold me over. It may actually SEND me over - over the edge, that is when we finally get to see that beautiful look that Jake sported at the Bafta's up on the silver screen. I hope my heart can stand it!

As for Jake owning Hollywood. I see it like you in that he is probably being offered a wide range of roles. But we know that Jake doesn't just jump on anything. In the long run it always turns out good for him and good for us as he is building an impressive body of work. Hollywood knows what he can do, but his deliberate choices will keep him from being one of the "Power" players - commanding tons of money for crappy movies. Something, I am sure doesn't concern him all that much. Hollywood is still about the almighty box office an unfortuately movies of substance rarely make much of it. Thankfully there are film makers out there looking exactly for what Jake has to offer.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks for that great comment Dani. Another strong one ;D But, alas, I'm weak and I've already ordered my copy.

But as you so well remind us, it's not long til Rendition. A mere three months - just compare this wait to the agonising time we had before Zodiac - and then we are in for something amazing. And yes, it will feature Jake as he looked at the Baftas this year - stunning.

I agree that, as long as there are decent filmmakers out there, with a real story to tell, they will want Jake.

I can't express how angry I am about this Zodiac dvd business. The thought of a load of marketing types sitting round a table discussing ways to rip the public off really makes my blood boil!!! I feel like my love, admiration, whatever you want to call it, for Jake is being taken advantage of here. Some of us can't afford to buy dvd's all that frequently and to be penalised and exploited for it is just wrong. I know it's unrealistic to think that anyone involved in the business side of the movie industry gives a toss about their customers, but it still pisses me off. I think I'm going to just rent Zodiac when it comes out and then buy the extended version when that's available.
If Jake does indeed "own Hollywood" I wish he would do something about his fans being ripped off! I realise he doesn't have any influence or power over this sort of thing, and I don't begrudge him a penny of the money I've spent on his dvd's, but...I don't know. It's hard not to be cynical sometimes.
Btw, I too have The Jake Gyllenhaal Collection and not just for decorative purposes. I bought it because at the time I didn't have Moonlight Mile or Proof, nd it actually worked out cheaper to buy the collection. The fact it looks good on the shelf is an added bonus;)
Wish I could join you all in a glass of wine, but I don't have any at the moment, so I'll raise a cup of good ole PG Tips instead.
Sorry to rant, but I had to get that off my chest.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Twisted Logic - I'm glad you got that off your chest!

This whole thing smacks to me of my real pet hate - when bands that I love (ie, U2) release 'best of' albums and throw in a couple of new tracks so, if you want the new material, you end up with loads of copies of songs you originally bought years ago. Now, I know you can download the songs, but I happent to be proud of my CD collection and don't like to be taken advantage of.

I have no idea whose decision it is about all these different versions of DVDs. Does David Fincher have any say in it? I imagine that the actors have little involvement and just do what is required for any additional features/commentaries etc. But I would have thought they reap some financial benefit. I would hate to think that Jake or any actor would like the thought of his or her fans being exploited, but that may be naive of me. It might not even occur to them. We are definitely being exploited - Jake's fans and the fans of David Fincher. I think that, as far as Hollywood is concerned, your cynicism is a good thing.

The Jake Gyllenhaal Collection was actually a good economical buy for a change - not to mention pretty.

Cheers to your PG Tips :D Feel free to rant whenever you wish.

TwistedLogic, I didn't realize the video collection had Moonlight Mile on it! I'm definitely going to buy it now. I love that film. I may wait for the special edition of Zodiac as well.

Dani, you're right; while I was happy to read about Jake's success, we know that Jake will always choose meaningful roles, and that's one of the reasons we admire him so much. I'm so excited about Rendition, I think this is gonna be the Big One for him (fingers crossed).

And, yes, the BAFTA look is my favorite too (one of the other reasons we admire!) ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Marina - I really do think Rendition will be The Big One. BAFTA Jake is my absolute favourite look too and to have a whole film with that look...

I'm a big fan of Moonlight Mile and get a lot of pleasure from listening to the Jake and Dustin commentary.

WDW-So you're a U2 fan as well?! I'm starting to think we must have been separated at birth or something!;) The money I've spent on Jake so far pales in comparison to what I've spent on U2 over the last 20 years. To be fair, both the "Best Of"'s did include a bonus CD of all the b-sides to their singles, so for the average fan it wasn't such a rip-off as a lot of these things, but I already had most of them too, some on vinyl as well as CD. But I still bought them both, and will probably buy the next one too - like you, I love my CD collection.

I think bands like U2 have a bigger say in what products are put out in their name, simply because they have more creative input than someone like Jake, who, in terms of a film, is just a very small cog in a big wheel, but I don't know enough about how it all works to be sure. I would think that Jake and Bono probably take the view that no-one forces us to buy their products, and that's true to an extent, but I do get the sense sometimes of being "bullied" into buying things sometimes. I think part of my anger is diirected at myself for falling for it, as much as at the Powers That Be for exploiting my allegiance to a band or actor.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Twisted Logic - I'm a U2 nut! I've bought everything they've ever done regardless. You're right about the B sides. But I was annoyed with the 18 Singles album I'll be honest. I thought it was too much on top of the previous Best of albums. Although the extras on it are among my favourites - The Saints are Coming and Window in the Skies - can't get enough of those.

I know that noone forces me to buy these albums or to buy all these DVDs with Jake but as a fan and a collector, I can't stop hoarding them, and I think the ones who do make the decisions rely on that piece of human behaviour. But as you said I don't begrudge a penny going to Jake.

I do think U2 has more say than Jake and I wish they would think about all this before they release another best of album. I need more new material from them and I don't want just a couple of songs! My habit must be fed :D Another OT rant from me!

Anonymous said...

Oh I forgot about the 18 album. My brother bought it for me as a Xmas present so I didn't actually pay for it myself, but it went missing somehow at my mum's, so that's probably why I didn't remember it! You're right though, it's abut time they released some new stuff, "...Atomic Bomb" was 3 years ago now! I guess Bono's too busy saving the world at the moment;)
Anyway, just to make this post slightly on topic,Jake said in an interview once that Bono was one of his heroes:) And I used to have a huge crush on Bono back in The Joshua Tree days, so Jake wasn't my first blue-eyed dark-haired bloke in a cowboy hat that I fancied the pants off!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

You and me both with Bono, Twisted Logic. He can do little wrong. I've loved U2 since their earliest days (along with The Waterboys and Teardrop Explodes) And then when I heard Jake say that he'd been to a U2 concert and described hearing Miracle Drug it gave me such a good feeling!

Strangely, I've recently felt a similar thing with Rufus Wainwright whom I adore. There are so many things that all of us have in common.

Anonymous said...

I was relatively late jumping on the U2 bandwagon- it was the Joshua Tree that hooked me. It was bit like how I fell in love with Jake when he stepped out of the truck in BBM- I saw the video of With Or Without You and was totally blown away and I went and got all their previous albums and I've loved evrything they've done since. I keep meaning to check out Rufus's stuff but haven't got round to it yet.I love The Maker Makes though. To me it's "Jack's song", like "He Was A Friend Of Mine" is Ennis's song. I had to take TMM off my MP3 player cos it brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it, which is pretty embarrassing when you're sitting on a bus or walking round the supermarket!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I remember when The Joshua Tree came out and I remember the day I bought it. I also bought The Waterboys' This Is the Sea that day - two very special albums to me.

Oh that is so true Twisted Logic - He was a Friend of Mine is Ennis' song. I'd never thought of that before.

I really recommend Rufus' Want One and Want Two albums. They'e beautiful.

Anonymous said...

I've got This Is The Sea (on good old fashioned vinyl) in the back of a cupboard somewhere. I wasn't a huge fan, but it is a great album:)
I usually don't bother sitting through the credits after a film, but after BBM I literally couldn't move I was so affected by it, so I sat there listening to those two songs and I felt HWAFOM summed up Ennis's feelings, and then TMM summed up Jack's feelings: "the maker" is Ennis, he was the only one who could "make a happy man" of Jack *sob*
Thanks for recommending those Rufus albums:) I'll get round to checking them out eventually (probably put them on my list to Santa this year;)
Ok,I'd beter go now. Sorry for all my completely off-topic rambling tonight. Please feel free to tell me to shut up when I get like this.

Don't apologize, TwistedLogic, you guys must be my soul sistahs or something. I looooooved The Teardrop Explodes and The Waterboys, and of course, U2, early U2 right up to the present, but I love The Saints are Coming. I love that Bono is so involved in humanitarian issues, I really admire him for that, and his music of course. And I've fallen hard for Rufus; I'm going to pick up his latest. I haven't played the BBM soundtrack for awhile, and I listened to it in my car on the way to work recently, and I teared up too, at each song. For some reason, one that really gets to me is the instrumental "Brokeback Mountain 1". "I Don't Want To Say Goodbye (All I Want To Do is Live With You) just rips my heart out, and The Maker Makes, which reminds me of Ennis just going through the motions of living day to day without Jack. It's so powerful - only can the "Maker" make a happy man of him. :'(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey no Twisted Logic - I've really enjoyed reminiscing about all this and the whole point of this blog is to follow the direction in which Jake sends us - sometimes it's not predictable but it should always be flexible.

I've never thought of The Maker Makes like that. I suppose that's because I've always tried not to think about it too hard as it's so difficult. I think in my head it's been the other way around, with Ennis thinking that at long last here is his soulmate who makes him complete and now he's lost. Oh, it is so sad but very beautiful.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Marina - you love U2 and The Waterboys too! That's incredible. I saw the Waterboys in concert a few weeks ago, the first time since I saw them originally years ago and it was so strange to have it all come back to me. It also showed me how many great songs they've done because everyone was calling out their favourites and there would never be time enough to do half of them.

Rufus is on repeat on my MP3 at the moment. Some of his songs are so beautiful, they're exquisite.

As I said on a post the other day, the BBM soundtrack caught me by surprise and it was incredible - as fresh, as painful and as warming as ever.

I love that we have these things in common :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I just noticed in the top picture in this post that Jake has two pairs of sunglasses - one he's wearing and another attached to his shirt. Just got me puzzled, that's all...

Anonymous said...

WOW!!!
Where do I begin? The cream of Jake's unique fan base opens the wine and turns profound while Incognita sleeps. I think I'll have to change my timings so I can join in live on all this.

I have so much to say, so much that I could write a whole article. I'll be back but I'll make my statement of the morning first ... I won't comment about Jake Gyllenhaal owning Hollywood but I'll just say he owns my heart!

WDW "the whole point of this blog is to follow the direction in which Jake sends us - sometimes it's not predictable but it should always be flexible"

May I add here that he sends me wherever my heart urges?

Anonymous said...

Great discussion! Sorry I missed it in real time. I wish I had the self discipline to NOT buy the unadorned Zodiac in protest, but that's not going to happen. I've already ordered it and can't wait to see it again. I own both versions of Donnie Darko and bought the original for my brother and my daughter. I own two BBMs and bought another for my brother and a friend, who has yet to watch it -- some kind of fear working there. I don't know if Jake "owns Hollywood" or not, but he sure owns me!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Beckela! I'm with you on this one - I just wouldn't be able to wait as I want to reacquaint myself with Zodiac as soon as possible.

I'm glad to hear you're doing your bit to spread the BBM - and DD - word. I feel like that about BBM too - I was so happy when I watched it with my mother and loved that she got something special out of it too.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Incognita - It would be great if we were all in one Jake time zone - but at least most of us cross over some of the time.

'Jake owns my heart' - that's a lovely statement and true for a fair few of us I believe :D

Anonymous said...

WDW: "I was so happy when I watched it with my mother and loved that she got something special out of it too. "

WDW it would be lovely if you could share some of your mother's thoughts about the film. My first viewing was with my mother and I doubt if I could have survived the intense emotion that I went through if she hadn't been there with me. Before we had the good fortune to receive a regioncode-less DVD as a gift, we were trying to fill ourselves up watching the clips, the trailer, the LOGO video over and over. She would be the one to generally ask for them and then we would both watch and I would be in a heap everytime. In fact August 2nd will be my first BBM anniversary. Imagine, it was just clips and trailers from April to August and before April BBM was a mere name to me.

As for the Zodiac DVD, it will be the only way I can see the film, so I don't have a choice.

Anonymous said...

And I forgot to add - I find that the Bafta look is everyone's favourite Jake look. I wonder if I will be won over ever, or Ruby and I will remain addicted to the Cannes-Jake-look? I mean hair-wise of course!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Incognita - I fear that I will be forever fighting a battle over Bafta hair with Ruby! But I know I'm right ;D

Sharing BBM with loved ones is an incredible experience but not one that I wanted myself for quite some time. But I saw it with my mother at Christmas finally and it gave her some understanding of why it's become such an important part of me. That's what I got out of the experience most of all.

It's good to hear that BBM was another means by which your mother and yourself were united, and that your experience of the film was so mutually rewarding.

Anonymous said...

Hi Incognita - I fear that I will be forever fighting a battle over Bafta hair with Ruby! But I know I'm right ;D

:D I think it's one of the few things we disagree on when it comes to Jake - the length and product-loading of his hair! That's not bad going, since it's pretty trivial in the scheme of things. very trivial in fact.

I'm curious to see what he actually looks like in Rendition - I doubt the hair will be as 'done' as at Bafta. Now what was that phrase Ingcognita....? ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Ruby! Yes it's a trivial issue and it's fun to 'argue' over it. Because the strange thing is, however much I love Bafta hair Jake, I only have to look at him with his hair in any other way (excluding Jarhead!) and I love it too. I do like the recent short cut and, of course, it's also affected by the length of facial scruff :D
