Zodiac goes for it, doing a good deed, and the Joker gets about

On 22 January 2008, the nominees for the 80th Academy Awards, to be hosted for a second time by Jon Stewart, will be announced. Despite Paramount's shoddy treatment of Zodiac (see earlier post), the film is still in the running. Here are three of the posters, which have been submitted to the relevant press to remind those who make the decisions about this wonderful film from the Spring.

And to remind us of the days of Zodiac's release, here is a video clip of Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo at the special screening of Zodiac in NYC, which took place the day before the LA premiere. I find it interesting that Jake says that he didn't discuss the seventies with his parents, but this may be because, as Jake also says, his character in Zodiac has a timeless quality to him, unlike Mark's Toschi who appears as if from a seventies' men's catalogue. Unfortunately, I turned up at the LA premiere but Jake didn't.

Good deeds

Both Jake and Maggie have been busy for charity recently. Maggie has teamed up with Trickle Up and designer TenThousandThings to create a necklace for the Seed A Dream campaign, which aims to help fight poverty by selling a special necklace. The video to accompany the appeal is narrated by Maggie. Here it is:

In another project, Maggie and Jake are among the stars designing and decorating kites which will be sold on ebay from next week. The proceeds will benefit the Afghanistan Relief Organization (AFO), which helps raise cash for the training of teachers and the construction of rural libraries in Afghanistan.

Maggie at the New Museum

Last night, Maggie was one of the stars to attend the grand reopening of New York's New Museum, an event hosted by Calvin Klein.

The Joker's looking fine!

The Joker has two forthcoming magazine covers. I love to see Heath Ledger getting this level of attention, disguised as he is. The first is for Empire and the second is for Wicked. The Empire cover is sensational!

Includes pictures from Awards Daily, Getty, Empire and Wizard.

Best ensemble
This award goes to the movie that most successfully juggles multiple story lines and multiple sets of actors.

Winner: Zodiac

Following the intertwining stories of those on the hunt for the Zodiac killer, this procedural thriller showcased another dark masterpiece from director David Fincher. Jake Gyllenhaal was actually fascinating as the newspaper cartoonist who obsesses over the killer while his family falls apart around him. The never-confirmed identity of the killer looms large over the story, and the atmosphere is suffocating and creepy. Zodiac could have stood to be cut down a little though, as its 158-minute running time is a bit excessive.

Hi Anon - I hadn't seen that - great stuff! I absolutely love to see Zodiac getting this kid of attention and acclaim. It really is the film of 2007 for me.

Christie said...

Thanks for all this WDW. I LOVE the Empire cover with The Joker. A BBM bud of my rang me the other day to tell me she had bought this and a few other copies and she was sending one to me pronto! I cannot wait to have it in my grubby hands. Heath is scaring me to death already. I think that is his intention.

I love the first Zodiac Oscar poster, and am keeping everything crossed that it does well at the Oscars. It's great that Jon Stewart is presenting too, I find him funny and attractive.

When you mentioned the kite auction and who it would benefit, I immediately thought of the novel "The Kite Runner". Sadly I can't remember who mentioned this in a previous post, but I know someone said that they'd read it and blubbed at the end. I did too, well I blubbed from about page 50 onwards! It is one of the saddest books I have ever read. If I have the courage to go and see it at the cinema, I will remember to take a box of tissues with me.

I am missing the gap pic of Jake.

Hi Christie - I've been looking out for this Empire mag everywhere - no sign of it yet. What a fantastic cover. Heath looks amazing.

I'm pretty fond of Jon Stewart too.

Oh yes, I remember that discussion of the Kite Runner. I'm keen to see it.

I'm missig the Gap pic too - I reckon it'll be back VERY soon :)) Can't get enough of it and I'm tryi to earn vouchers ;)

I sure do live these updates on Jake and Maggie. I know they try to do charity work whenever they can. Kites huh? I wonder how much they will get for them.

I am also looking forward to seeing Heath as the joker (I wonder if they ever go to each other's movies? I know Jake went to Casanova. I bet he might want to see Heath in TDK)

Linda :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Linda! You can just bet that Jake will be going to see The Dark Knight - wouldn't it be great if he went to a premiere to support Maggie and Heath?! Have to keep an eye on the kites...

If Zodiac made more money at the b.o. i think it would have a chance of a best picture nom, but i have my doubts despite it being a really good movie. American Gangster is also a police procedural that worldwide attracted more viewers, if a film of that kind will be nominated, it probably will be AG. I hate to say it! :(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - So much has gone wrong with the promotion and presentation of Zodiac since the beginning which, if I stop and think about it, makes me extremely annoyed because I really don't think there's been a film to beat it this year. Everyone in it, Fincher, the astounding cinematography, the soundtrack, and that incredible attention to deatil - I can't fault it. I've not seen American Gangster and so I can't compare, but I do believe Zodiac deserves any award going. I'm going to hope to the last minute :)

Hello folks! It's hard to type with my fingers crossed but I'm back online at home for the first time in what feels like eons and, as usual, tonight is a great post,WDW!

I'm keeping everything crossed for "Zodiac" to be showered with nominations for the coming awards season, but it's something of a triumph of hope against expectation. As we know to our cost, the likes of the Academy don't always reward the stand-out quality film, but play it safe and go with the more politically correct choice. Hey,who knows,we may yet be surprised with a few nods for Zodiac...not sure they'll have the balls to do the same for "Rendition" although, God knows,it deserves all the plaudits going!

And the Heath pics are great! I picked up a copy of Empire in Waitrose the other day and then made myself put it back down because I'm trying to cut back on unnecessary extravagances! Wish I'd bought it now,or at least stood there long enough to scan the interview! I am looking forward to TDK almost as much as I would any Jake film..no less than Michael Caine and Gary Oldman have both been moved to wax lyrical about Heath's extraordinary performance as The Joker and the little teaser trailers and pictures we've seen so far are utterly tantalising. I just know Heath will be wonderfully twisted and terrifying in this role.Oooh, makes me shiver, in a good way!

OT Just a heads up to those of my fellow Brits who are into "The Mighty Boosh"...the crazy gorgeous Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt are on Jonathan Ross at 10.35 tonight. Yum!

Aaaah,'tis good to be home :-) !

chillinwitgyllen said...

WDW I'll vouch for that Gap picture anytime. I'll just have to look at your previous post when I need my fix.

Thanks for your concern WDW I am feeling better. It was a Jake filled day for me, that's my remedy :)

Welcome back Nadine.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nadine! Welcome home!! Fingers crossed everything stays up and running this time - you've a lot to catch up on. Go back to the last thread comments so you can see how we've rewritten Brothers - or Twins as it's now known - for Jim ;)

I know it's not that hopeful for Zodiac but I'm not going to stop crossing everything.

You've seen Heath's Empire too! They don't have it where I live but tomorrow I'm going hunting. The whole idea of the film and Heath in it makes me shiver too! Definitely the next best thing to a Jake movie.

Good to see you *)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Glad you're feeling better CWG! - good to see Nadine, eh?

chillinwitgyllen said...

Aaaaaahhhh Heath, the next best thing to Jake, you know I love ya baby.

Welcome back, Nadine - we'll have to part company for once on the Boosh. I've tried, believe me :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Anouska - good to see you :) I'm all for a party - CWG is too hungover ;)

Haven't exactly been abstaining today myself, WDW - work, don'tcha know :) I'm not the party this evening :)

chillinwitgyllen said...

Hey now did anyone say party?

WDW when you come stateside you'll have to let us know, we'll have to plan a get together of some sort...keep us posted, see you got me all excited :D

twistedlogic said...

I have to say I don't really take the Oscars seriously since BBM was robbed, but still I hope Zodiac does get some recognition. It seems Jake sometimes picks films that are dismissed as flops at the time but end up being successful and critically aclaimed years down the line. Good job we're not fickle like that:)

I want to see Jake's kite!! (Btw CWG, I mean that literally, it's not Brit slang for anything!;))

I have to admit, I'm not as excited about TDK as everyone seems to be. It's just not my thing. But I'm sure Heath will be brilliant in it - he looks scary enough in those pics!!

chillinwitgyllen said...

TL, regretable error on the Film Acadmy's part, BBM robbed with their pants down. Unfortuantely, it was too gay for them to win, how sad. Come on did anyone see Crash? I don't get it.

chillinwitgyllen said...

TL, Jake's kite?

twistedlogic said...

Hey CWG! yes, Jake's kite - as in diamond shaped thing that people run around trying to get it to fly;) I'm just really curious to see what design he's come up with. I guess there'll be pics of it on e-bay soon enough, not that I'll be able to afford half an inch of its string:(

As for the Oscars, I can accept that people have different tastes and maybe some just didn't like BBM. What i find unacceptable is that apparently quite a few of the people who vote for the Oscars didn't even bother to watch it, so how on Earth can they make an impartial and balanced decision? Maybe i'm just being naive but I can't understand how the result was allowed to stand when that came to light.

chillinwitgyllen said...

TL, you against me on the ebay bid, if he has a kite I want it!
What happened to WDW? Did Mr. WDW get jealous or something?

chillinwitgyllen said...

TL, some things never change and this is a sensitive world (Heath's saying) and I think as much as those people want to believe they are compassionate and well rounded they are usually the first to judge. I'm never surprised anymore. Just look at the numbers BBM did so much better than Crash could have ever dreamed for. It just proves that you have to be politically correct instead of talented, but we all know the trust and that's what keeps the pulse alive.

chillinwitgyllen said...

typo, we all know the truth

Anonymous said...

Thanks WDW for providing the Access H'wood clip from the NYC screening of Zodiac. Damn he looks hot! I mean. I've watched it three times in a row and he is SERIOUSLY HOT. (I have to go for a walk or something. Maybe I need to sit down.OK. I'm already sitting. I'll walk.) Never mind. Sorry for the interruption.

twistedlogic said...

CWG, I wouldn't worry about competing with me for Jake's kite - I'm skint:( However if my lottery numbers come up at the weekend, forget the big house, flash car, designer clothes and state of the art iPhone for TL Jr, I'm blowing the lot on Jake's kite if I have to!

And yeah you're right, who cares what the so-called Academy thinks, we know the truth! Of course, when Jake gets his Best Actor Oscar, I'll be the first to applaud their excellent taste;)

Lol Bobbyanna! I know how you feel! Jake looks so hot it hurts in that video:D

chillinwitgyllen said...

That's what I say TL, when Jake finally wins we'll be laughing in their faces won't we. If I win the lottery I'm flying my ass up to Santa Fe for a little Jake time myself.

No need to apologize Bobbyanna, we've all been there :)

Maybe WDW got sick of us finally.

twistedlogic said...

Oh CWG, I love your avatar! And yes, I'm not one to say "I told you so" but I definitely will be saying it when Jake's name is read out:) we are gonna have some party here that night:D

I'm sure WDW isn't sick of us (at least I hope not!) :) But she does work so hard for us, she deserves a night off:)

chillinwitgyllen said...

TL, let the party begin...what a nite it will be eh?

G'nite, I'm calling it an early nite myself and you know why I'm sure. Refer to previous post if needed.

twistedlogic said...

Yeah, we better start getting the beers in! If Zodiac and Rendition don't do the trick, Twins will, for sure;) Night CWG - hope you're feeling better in the morning:)

twistedlogic said...

PS: Love your new avatar too:)

chillinwitgyllen said...

TL, I had to own that picture somehow :D

G'nite WDW, may you have sweet Jake dreams floating in your head.

hAhAHAHA said...

Aren't those covers just lovely? I have to say, my doppelganger is doing me proud.

That's *my* vest he's wearing. Stole it right out from under me.

Anyway. You are a loyal one, dear girl. I count you as an honorary minion.

Smile!

Can I just say something. I don't want to be rude. But I am mystified as to why, when one has access to stylists and the haute of haute couture, WHY do these ladies have to look so...blah??? I mean. Really. None of they look particularly suitable at all. And usually Maggie has a cool fashion sense. IMVHO,all four of them just look blah. And that Olsen girl is a billionaire. Yes, she is.

I think Heath will give another amazing performance in TDK. I have confidence that Christopher Nolan allowed some nuance in his performance. Something that will keep us off balance (not hard in my case) and terrorized.

I am buying a ticket for the mega-millions. After I win, I will be setting up my own production company with Jake and we will have a very long term relationship. We will meet at my chateau every day and long into the night developing projects. Many projects. We will explore many options. Many options. Will we explore. And we will practice Braille, too. Just because I think it's a good skill.

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Morning chaps. Thanks for the welcome home and for some seriously funny posts. Braille indeed,Bobbyanna!

The one detail I did pick out of the Heath interview when I was skimming the mag in the shop was that he developed the Joker(who has dropped in I see - hi J,you old devil!) by locking himself away in a flat in London for a month, thinking about the character and trying out voices. There's dedication (and a possible route to madness) for ya!

Typical isn't it?! I only have to work one Saturday in 8 or 9 and just as I get my PC back it's my Saturday in! Have a great day peeps, try to catch you later!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone! I missed you all last night and you were partying!! I had a bit of a wining, dining situation going on... But tonight back with the gang :)

First off - Don't you look great CWG! Fabulous avvie!! Loving it :D

And J honoured - and a not a little frightened - to see you again. You must be very pleased with your doppelganger, he's looking good there.

I heard about Heath locking himself away to get into the part - wow, that must have been odd.

So who's going for the kite then? I don't think I could avoid the string or the ribbon on it - that's if it has a ribbon - if I designed a kite it'd have a big bow on it.

TL, CWG, Bobbyanna - you girls had me in stitches!! And, Bobbyanna, learning braille with Jake in yur chateau, hysterical. I need a cup of tea... How could I possibly be sick of you all!

Morning Nadine - that's not right you have to work... But see you tonight :)

Christie said...

WDW, I saw Empire mag in Tescos this morning, plus there was a big issue of Total Film that had something about TDK in it. Plus I saw a Zodiac pic, I think that might have been connected to Oscar talk.

CWG, love your avatar...I have no idea how to include an avatar when I post, so I'll just imagine I have one.

Welcome back Nadine. I heard that about Heath locking himself away in a London flat to develop The Joker. He also kept diaries, imagine reading those?

bobbyanna, I adore your dream of living in your chateau and developing projects with Jake, and exploring with Jake. It's the exploring with Jake I really like the sound of. Imagine - just you and Jake alone in a chateau.

chillinwitgyllen said...

Morning all. WDW I borrowed my avatar from your site...was hoping you didn't mind :) Needless to say we know you have a life but we still missed you *)

Christie: when you find a picture you like right click on it and 'save as is' then edit your profile by adding a photo, brouse your computer and look under your pics and then just click on that saved pic and voila new avatar.

Eww! I just thought of something. I was watching that video clip again...(I know.) and Jake was talking about the seventies and his character and Mark Ruffalo's character and he talked about the fashion. Mark, with the "big hair, the bow ties, the ..chafing plaid pants..."

I've seen pictures of Joe Namath from his glory days and...he had big hair, and terrible bellbottom pants, flashy shirts! I have to say, men's fashions of that time were pretty flamboyant, almost clownish to some degree. Maybe they will opt for "timeless" again. Poor Jake. The thought of him chafing worries me.

Anonymous said...

forty nine degrees and off and on rainy in Santa Fe snow on the mountains.

hey Nadine, good to see you back, looking all chipper, and all . . .

Bobbyanna, you sound pretty chipper, too.

But tell you what I gotta stop worryng about Jake's thighs, privates, hair, etc. He's got his own damn toucher. Its been wearing me down, this worry about chapped thighs, bruised balls from biking, god knows what besides concussion and bad knees brawling on the ten yard line - ENUFF ALREADY! (But sweetie do wear your lovely marino wool vest under your jacket if you're going out, today)

chillinwitgyllen said...

Pia, same exact weather here in Upstate NY. Jake go skiing at Ski Santa Fe Mountain, awesome terrain but take Pia's advise on keeping warm, we don't want our guy catching a cold or even worst frost bit on ANY part of your body :)

TL thanks for keeping me company last nite.

Glad you had fun last nite WDW.

Christie said...

CWG, thanks for the avatar advice. I think I've done it. This was not the pic I wanted, but hey, I think it will do!

Dear god, Jake talking about chafing, all kinds of images start running my head.

bobbyanna, I can understand you watching that vid more than once, it's gorgeous, Jake looks gorgeous, and I really love his hair.

I've been listening to Jenny Lewis today. I got her CD in a great old record shop in Greenwich Village. My NY travelling bud is a big fan of hers and knows nothing of her Jake connection, until I told her of course. Her music is nothing like I imagined it to be. And she is really quite beautiful. The only pics I'd seen of her before were when she accompanied Jake to the DD premiere, and they really didn't do her justice. I would love to know how they met, does anyone know?

chillinwitgyllen said...

Christie, love the avatar!

Just a little while ago I put on the same ski jacket I wore last year and it still had a Sante Fe ski tag on it :)

Hi everyone :) So great to see yu all. Sorry about the neglect over the last 24 hours, last night was all about looking after Mr WDW and today I've been out Jakin with my Bafta sisters - they got me drunk, can you believe it? So I just got back after a wonderful day in London of tapas, cocktails and hot chocolate. Also we sat at the table next to Pete Burns in full glory. Took me right back to my 80s fan days in Liverpool and Manchester :) What a wonderful day!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Christie, you look great!

See you all tomorrow! *)

Glad you got home safe, WDW. You were managing to get quite nicely drunk there on your own. You know you were borderline Gooberballs, though?

You didn't imagine Pete Burns and his boyfriend :)

Got to say, Heath's Joker will be the reason I go and see TDK, it's not really my sort of thing, but something seems to indicate Heath's going to be sensational.

When I win the lottery I too shall be starting up a film production company, Jake's first role is currently being developed, but involves lots of half naked, sweaty farming scenes :D

christie - it was me that read The Kite Runner, can't wait for the film, but if it lives up to the book I'm expecting another BBM two hour crying fit at the end!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning/afternoon everyone :D Almost feeling human again. I hope everyone is having a good Sunday.

Hi Abstemious Anouska - you did a good job of looking after me *) I'm glad it wasn't all a dream... Gooberballs, moi?

Hey Agent K - This will be the first Batman movie I've seen - not being a superhero fan - but I'm definitely seeing this - Maggie and Heath. Not missable.
