There's quite a bit to get through this evening, so consider yourself forewarned - I recommend you pour yourself something warming, get out some nibbles, put your feet up and forget the snow or ice outside your window. To get straight to the point, let's transport ourselves to New Mexico and take a look at Brother's filming locations for the next week, thanks to a poster at IMDb today. The signs are that Jake's going to be busy over his birthday, which is something he may well be accustomed to - Jake regularly films at this time of year.
Here's what they say [abbreviations are mine]: 'Filming has begun in Glorietta/Las Vegas and in at the Greer Garson studios in Santa Fe. Filming in Los Alamos will begin next week, December 16-21, 2007 near downtown and on Barranca Mesa. "Base camps" will be set-up nearby each of the geographic filming areas. A "base camp" is the staging area where the film crew put all the big trailers (hair, make-up, wardrobe, actors, etc.) and equipment, with a dining hall/kitchen/restroom area nearby. One of the base camps will be in main parking lot and in the Parrish Hall of the Imacculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. The other base camp will be at the Los Alamos Golf Club parking lot and meeting facility.
Sun, December 16 (afternoon): Trucks/trailers arrive Los Alamos and set-up base camp* in the parking lot behind and around the Immaculate Heart of Mary parking lot.
Mon, 17 (all day): Filming at United Church; base camp at IHM.
Tue, 18 (all day): same as above and then moving base camp to Golf Course.
Wed, 19 (all day): Filming at residence on Barranca Mesa; base camp at Golf Course.
Thur, 20 (all day): same as above.
Fri, 21 (all day); same as above and then leaving Los Alamos.'
You can read an interview with David Benioff, the writer of Brothers, here.
For your consideration - Brokeback Mountain
I am very grateful to a WDW reader who sent me a download of a Brokeback Mountain video, which I believe to be an Oscar 2006 For your Consideration video. Although some of its interviews with Jake, Heath and Ang were recorded at the same time as those in the infamous DVD extras, much is new, including a wonderful section from the BAFTAs 2006 when Jake shows just how thrilled he is to have won his award: 'I totally didn't expect it. It's premature I think but I'll take it!'
Elsewhere in the video, Jake reflects on his filming relationship with Heath Ledger: 'It's been really wonderful creating an intimacy with him - he's like a genuinely nice guy and I just feel like I'm not that afraid of it... Normally, you feel uncomfortable around people or you feel weird, but he's just, I don't know, maybe it's his Australian background, I don't know what it is. He makes me feel comfortable.' You should be able to download the video here (just follow the instructions) - thanks very much, friend, for doing this for us. Any problems let me know.
Zodiac's fortune
The Golden Globe nominations were announced today and, not surprisingly but nevertheless disappointingly, Zodiac was not among them. Rotten Tomatoes and Cinematical ('And where's Zodiac?') are among the sites that have duly noted the absence of Zodiac.
However, the nominations for the London Film Critics awards were also announced today and in these Zodiac fared much, much better. Zodiac has been nominated for Film of the Year and David Fincher is up for Director of the Year. Although, unfortunately, there's no mention of Jake, the good news is that Maggie Gyllenhaal is nominated for Actress of the Year for her performance in Sherrybaby. The winners will be announced on 8 February next year.
Zodiac continues to feature in the top ten lists of film critics. MTV has placed Zodiac amongst its top films: 'David Fincher's inquiry into a spate of serial killings in Northern California at the end of the 1960s (the Summer of Love was definitely over) exhibits a master filmmaker's control of complex data within a highly evolved thriller narrative. The Zodiac case was never solved, but the movie offers persuasive closure with the chilling performance of John Carroll Lynch. And Robert Downey Jr. gives one of his most pungently hilarious performances as the sour, hell-bound reporter, Paul Avery. (Fincher says he just got out of the way and let Downey do what he does — it feels like the actor is pulling his acidulous lines out of the ether.) A lot of people were put off by the picture's 158-minute running time. Personally, I recommend the slightly more expansive "director's cut" DVD — the rare post-theatrical artifact that wholly justifies the restoration of excised material. Special mention: the spookiest use of a Donovan song ever.'
The Orlando Sentinel places Zodiac at No 5: 'A crime mystery benefiting from a dazzling, showy turn by Robert Downey Jr. as a reporter, and the usual solid, ultra realistic work from Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo, all on the trail of an infamous serial killer. David Fincher's best movie ever.'
An overlooked list at 411mania pays tribute to Zodiac: 'Another casualty terribly hamstringed by early release, David Fincher's astonishing Zodiac was run over in March by Wild Hogs. This event, you readers with mildly far reaching memories might recall, is what finally sent me over the edge with the American moviegoing public... As mentioned previously in another column, Zodiac is one of the few times where the marketing people got it exactly right, at least with its tagline. "There's more than one way to lose your life to a killer." David Fincher has told us that story. A story of desperate men doing desperate things, each for their own wildly desperate reasons. Each performance quite strong (with special notice going to Robert Downey Jr.'s addled portrayal of Paul Avery), each depiction part of the kaleidoscopic nature of investigation. Just when you begin to see something solid, the turn comes and the pebbles frustratingly fall into a hopelessly new pattern.'
'The film may be called Zodiac, but it's truly about three men - Robert Graysmith, Dave Tocchi [sic], and Paul Avery - who drove themselves to the brink (and in one case over) because of simple need. Downey's Avery, his need for a story. Mark Ruffalo's Tocchi, his need to catch. In the case of Jake Gyllenhaal's Graysmith (and ultimately them all), the need to know. The things these men sacrificed to that need left them shattered and no more satisfied than when they began their journey. And in that way, those three men were no more or less victims of the Zodiac as anyone else. Lives lost entirely, or lives lost endlessly chasing windmills in the dark. Your choice.'
Maggie and Peter out and about and more lunchboxes...
Maggie, Peter and Ramona were seen out and about in a very sunny and crisp NYC on Tuesday this week.
Their lunchbox is still up for auction with Peter saying about it "I wanted to dip it in wax and then light it on fire to see how it would turn out. But Maggie said that we only had one box and I wasn't allowed to do that." I see Maggie's point here. As we're talking lunchboxes here are three of them, the first is Maggie and Peter's, the second is Reese Witherspoon's and the third is Natalie Portman's. You can see all of them here (and/or bid on them) and you can do the lunchbox guessing game here. It seems WDW favourite Michael Stipe auctioned off his lunchbox, along with many photos, for $35,000. What does one do with a lunchbox that pricey?
Includes pictures from IHJ, Popsugar, the Lunchbox Auction.

OMG Kate, don't tell me I slid home from this bus/train mess and into first posting place here. How delightful to see your new post.
You know I can barely take this all in...it's so great to have such access to Jake news...I will never give up reading until it's imprinted in my pea brain:)
What and grand treat for us all, especially on this cold icy slushy day.
Thank you so much.:)
s
back soon.
Hi Sass! It's horrible out there - fortunately working at home tomorrow while the car spends yet another day in the garage - sob. Glad you liked the post - I enjoyed doing it :D
Thank you so much for the BBM vid, WDW (and anonymous friend!). You know there's never enough BBM as far as I'm concerned:) How sweet and adorable is Jake with his Bafta?! "I'll take it" Aw, bless him..Of course you should take it,you earned it sweetheart:) And I'd forgotten how damn goodlooking Heath is, having only seen pics of him recently as the Joker or um...let's just say not looking his best;) Can't wait to watch Candy later tonight.
Shame about Zodiac not getting any nominations but good to see it getting recognition elsewhere. At the end of the day, people forget who won what award but they remember the film forever if it's good, regardless of whether it won awards or not.
Love Maggie and Peter's lunchbox - although it looks a bit impractical! My favourite is Natalie's, it's gorgeous. I wonder if it's too late for her to persuade Jake to do one? I'd love to see what he would come up with.
Wow, what a packed post! Thank you for all the gems, WDW! Now I have to watch the video and read all the articles. :D I am finally caught up on all the fantastic radio and print interviews you posted in the last posts. They were wonderful and they make me adore Jake even more! I also really liked Brad S. He seems like a great guy. Loved the connection between J and B.
WDW, just got your response email! I will email you back very soon. ;)
Thanks WDW! Perfect post for a cold, snowy afternoon - what better way to spend it than to curl up with a hot cup of something and read about Jake! Loved yesterday's post too - that he's got Jack's back, who means so much to us all. :)
WDW, Good Lord. What a misstep.
The GG nominations are so uninspired this year. I didn't have a chance to digest the nominations this morning. I'm cross-posting, my hastily posted indignation and frustration at their snubs of some of the finest films and directors ever not nominated... have to run out and get more batteries. Back soon to read and view all you've given us these last two days:)
I'm sorry. I am as big as fan of Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, John Travolta, and Tom Hanks as the next person, but this time they didn't deserve these nominations.
Why fill up nominee space with post winners who have done nothing to deserve these 2007 kudos? What happened to original thinking by a nominating body?
I may have have to wait for the AMPAS...as if...to mention Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, Zodiac, Robert Downy Jr, Josh Brolin, Ben Foster, 3:10 To Yuma, Into The Wild, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck and Gone Baby Gone: Aforementioned movies and actors are among some of the most unique and rewarding performances I've been privy to this year.
Hi TL - hope you're feeling much better tonight - any more Jake dreams? Jake is so sweet with his Bafta! It really meant a lot to him, it's obvious. Heath looks pretty fine too, that's for sure...
That's a very good point about how people remember the film whatever and Zodiac is an amazing film!
Natalie's lunchbox is my favourite too - cute and functional - Maggie and Peter's looks 'awkward'... Can you imagine what Jake's would loook like? I think it would be busy, colourful with an interesting functional feature.
Hey Get Real - glad you got the email :) Brad's lovely, isn't he? Jake always surrounds himself with such interesting people.
Hey Bertie - good to hear from you - what a cosy comment :) I feel all wrapped up right now. Thanks so much for commenting and I'm glad you liked the posts :D
Hi Sass - the GGlobe nominations were totally uninspiring and forgetful, as they usually are to be honest. The best thing about the Globes is the hotel in which they take place, which is one of my favourites - otherwise they're all about the status quo. But it is good to see so much recognition about for Zodiac now that the year closes.
Hi WDW! Feeling better tonight, albeit a bit drowsy from the painkillers:) No dreams to report, sadly;( You're right it's obvious how happy and proud Jake was about his Bafta, I never get tired of watching his reaction when he won and his speech :)
an interesting functional feature
Sounds interesting! Care to elaborate?
Hey WDW, thanks for this great post. We have gotten 5 inches of snow today so far and more is coming. Disappointed with the GG nominations but haven't seen many of the nominated films.
TL, I'm so excited your watching Candy tonite, awesome movie!!! You'll love it. Both Heath and Abby were amazing, one of those best kept indie film secrets. Have you seen it before? I recommend it highly.
Hey TL - I keep dreaming about Jake pushing my car... I just think Jake would design a useful lunchbox with built-in gadgets. What do you think?
Love the sound of the snow CWG - none of that here, just sharp frost. Candy's on late here tonight, I've never seen it. I need my recorder to work and record it... Fingers crossed.
Hey CWG! I haven't seen Candy before, I've meant to for ages but never got round to it. I was gutted I missed it on Sunday so when Christie said it was on again tonight (thanks again, Christie!) there was no way I was going to miss it. I've heard it's very good so I'm really looking forward to it:)
WDW, that sounds like a very James Bond lunchbox! Is that your next project for Jake? I'm not a fan of Bond films but I would watch one for Jake and I can totally see him as Bond. as for the gadgets, I can't think of anything off the top of my head - well nothing printable anyway!
WDW, I promise you, you won't be disappointed. Excellent performances. Just remember it was a very low budget film.
Tl, can't wait to hear from you and WDW about it. Stay warm girls
Ski weekend for me again.
wow... that's a very rich post! well done.
i can't believe how young Jake looked in those BAFTA winning pics... i mean, that's only less than 2 years ago, but he seems to have grown up right in front of our eyes.
i want to tell Fincher that he didn't make Zodiac "for Jake and 6 other people", that it was very well received in places outside US... but looks like it's going to be one of those classics that will stay in people's mind but not because of the awards.
it's always kind of strange that no one mentions Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" at all... it swept everything in Chinese oscars.
I can just see Jake getting into design TL - we know how much he likes carpentry and he seems very practical (unlike me). How I'd love to see Jake as James Bond...
Thanks CWG - I'm looking forward to seeing it. Apart from BBM, the only films I've seen Heath in are he Knight's Tale and that one with Mel Gibson (The Patriot?)
Thank you Winterbird! I know, it's hard to fathom how far Jake and his career have come on in the last two years. In the wake of BBM and Jarhead, Jake was flying high! Is Lust, Caution even out here yet? Or in the US? That seems like one of those films that has had a lot of attention but for too long before release -I'm Not There being another. That feels like it's been out for months but it's still not out here for another week or so. I will definitely see Lust, Caution when it's out.
I do believe Zodiac is on its way to be a classic.
Man, do we have snow! Expected twelve inches by midnight. Its lovely! And lovely to have a sweet Jakey post tonight, WDW. As TL said, never enuff, never enuff. . .
Ive got Candy coming in via netflix on Tuesday.
Must admit I dont get my knickers in a twist over awards. Cream eventually rises to the top, as Beckela is known to say. In the meantime I am one delighted pussy cat licking cream from my whiskers.
So curious over the sites for Brothers. Los Alamos is very strange, situated on a MESA (Robert Oppenheim went to a ramch camp there as a boy and when looking for a secret and isolated site to work on atomic bomb suggested Los Alamos)
The town itself was very self contained, and odd, curiously anglo "suburban" in that high desert mostly hispanic and native american coungry. Sorta out of time.
When driving down the winding road of the mesa from Los Alamos, I slowed to ten miles an hour, and was totally terrified, while all the folks from "the lab" were heading for home and honking at me impatiently. embarrassing.'
Knowing that this was the place where work on the atomic bomb had been accomplished and similar wor is still being done - I found disturbing and eerie.
Ive got wine but Id like some chocolate.
Although today's column was VERY sweet and thanks to all!
Hi Pia - I love the thought of all this snow falling, wish we had some of it here. My recorder's still bust so I'm watching a bit of Candy now but it's too late so I'll have to try and rent or buy it. The opening was beautiful - more This Mortal Coil. I can separate Jake from Jack with little trouble, but Heath from Ennis is much more difficult.
I love to hear your thoughts on New Mexico, while knowing the filming is going on there - what an amazing place - made for film.
WDW, this is your week for broken stuff! :(
This London Film Critics gig - will there be awards? Will I have to go to Millets and buy an Orla Kiely tent or what?
Lust, Caution is out here the first week of Jan - I've already lined up my visit - CANNOT WAIT.
Hey Anouska - I know, nothing's working for me this week :( I think there are awards on the 8th of Feb so you've plenty of time to get a nice hat. Thanks for the info on Lust, Caution - I hope you're not suggesting that you're going to see it without lil ol me :D
I was weak - watched a bit of Candy but it just made me want to see Ennis again, so I'm now watching BBM...or at least some of it.
I do like it when Pia goes all Americana - s'like being there.*
I know - I've got such a feel for NM and it's all because of Pia :)
WDW, you still up too? I was about to turn off and turn in (hmm, shades of Timothy Leary ;D) ... YES I was going to see it alone the first time, but it'd make a great meet-up excuse subsequently - I've heard it's great and I watch anything Ang directs multiple times. OK I haven't seen Hulk yet, though hubby has expressed an interest in it ...
What side was Candy on? I know it can't be satellite :) I'd like to see it; thanks for the recommendation, CWG.
I'm off too now Anouska - just watched SNIT, that's all the emotion I can take tonight. I saw Hulk - blimey, I can never believe that was Ang! I hated it (although I used to be quite a fan of the original :D )
well let me know Anouska if this view is boring. I found N.M fascinating. But for all I kmow, the Bros. cast is doing all their work on various sound stages.
Candy was/is on Film 4
Hey Pia - It sounds to me like a mixture of the two - sounstages and the great outdoors. I find the idea intriguing of having a base on the golf course.
I just put Ang's Ride With The Devil on my netflix queque. ???
Sleepin on the golf course, they'll have to watch out for drool spots. :) :)
Pia, no it's wonderful, more please **
Well, it's nearly half past midnight and the long day's journey into the weekend begins soon ... so, nite both *
Ooh Donnie reference :)
I am going, I am going ...
Night Pia - yes, don't stop! - and night Anouska. Friday at last...
I'll catch up with you all later :D
Pia, again just have to say how I love your posts! As I do everyone's here. :) You just have a great way of describing things that make you feel a part of it, like NM.
Night, WDW and all UKers. Still early here in the icy, snowy city.
WDW, your in for a treat with Candy, hope tyou get to view it all. Interested how the UK friends found Candy. Any comments...loved that movie.
Guys, "Lust, Caution" was nomintated for the Golden Globes in the Best Foreign Film catagory. It was an excellent film with great performances and Ang is truly a master. It sucks that "Zodiac" didn't get a nob but sadly that doesn't surprise me with its release date. I am glad critics are still talking about it and putting it on the best of the year lists. Candy is also a great film and Heath (and Abby) is great. I recommend.
^^ that should be nod, not nob, lol. And the same comments about Zodiac should also be about "Renditon".
Just want to say that I've watched "Lust, Caution" in london film fest - and it's definitely in my top 3 this year, it's dark, sexy and very moody.... well, actually kind "WDW"... lol.
Don't miss it. Ang is a true artist. And the original writer (Eileen Chang) of that short story, she's the one of the greatest Chinese female writers. In fact, her strong female characters have kind of made her very popular in gay community.
Morning everyone - another cold one here but at home today, having just taken the car to the car doctor :(
Thanks for the comments - I have a confession... last night I started watching Candy and then realised that I needed to see Heath as Ennis and ended up watching BBM instead!
Hi Get Real - I love the comments here, too, they can carry me off to all places, including NM. That's good about the nod for Lust, Caution, shame about Zodiac and Rendition.
Morning CWG - hope you're wrapped up :D
Morning Winterbird! I was sorry I couldn't go to any of the London Film Festival. But I'll see Lust, Caution in January so I suppose for me it belongs with 2008 films. Thanks for the info about Eileen Chang.
Have a good Friday everyone - we're nearly there...
Morning WDW, yes, I'm staying warm, I have my Christmas Work Party today so it will be a day of cheer :)
I actually watched Candy last nite since there was so much talk about it. To see Heath in that role is very different than what he's done. I'd like to see Jake do a role like that too someday. It shows their vulnerable side and it really puts the actor out there beyond anything they've done. It is a difficult film to watch. I think this was his last film before the more recent ones. I remember hearing Heath talk about this film at a press conference. He did it because of the message it had. Another really important reason to watch Candy is to see the perfection in Jefferey Rush. In my opinion this is one of my fav Rush films.
Enjoy your day...the weekend is almost here!
Talking of Jake dreams, I had another very weird one. Apologies, as you probably have to be a Brit to understand part of it, but just after the fashion show bit of How to Look Good Naked, Gok suddenly announced an extra part and I appeared on stage (not in my undies thankfully) and Jake then appeared and proceeded to cut my hair ??? (very nice cut BTW)
It's a disappointing about Zodiac, but a couple of oscar nods could well create the sort of buzz that finally got Shawshank it's recognition - I was lucky enough to see that when it first came out, and it was frustrating for months talking about this brilliant film that no one had heard of, then came the Oscars and all of a sudden it's acknowledged as a true classic - fingers crossed for Zodiac :D
Morning WDW, morning everyone. A cold frosty day here, have a feeling it could snow.
What a wonderful post from last night, I missed it then as I was on a Christmas do with work. Got in and switched on Candy. Have seen the film twice already. I thought it was incredible. Very powerful performances from Heath and Abbie. CWG, it is an uncomfortable film to watch at times, I agree with you, but Heath and Abbie do something that just draws you in and keeps you there. I adore the soundtrack on this film, I play it all the time. The actual score is one of my favourites ever. Heath I think did this after BBM and Casanova, so three very distinctive and extreme film roles in a short space of time. You would think it was 3 different actors playing in those films. Heath gave everything to this film and was very passionate about it, being independent and Australian-made. I was heavily involved in a forum campaign to get it shown in more cinemas, and not just in art-house ones. That is when I got a pm from Heath thanking me (he wrote to others, not just me!) and wishing me an enjoyable time at the London Film Festival.
As for all the Jake goodies, well where can I start. BBM of course. I loved the vid from the Baftas, what a wonderful night that was. If only Heath had won.
I was intrigued by all the Brothers location schedule, too.
I wonder what Jake will do on his birthday?
Morning CWG - enjoy the party and be careful with those Bloody Marys ;) That's so great that you were watching Candy last night - I should have stuck with it, Ennis was calling me though. I'm a fan of Rush. Heath looked so young!
Hey Agent K - So Jake has another talent, cutting hair! What with that and pushing my car in my dream, he's very useful to have around. And yes, fingers crossed for Zodiac.
Hi Christie - I'm tempted to get the soundtrack for Candy, just my kind of music.
That is so cool about Heath contacting you to thank you for your good work for Candy! What a good guy :) I remember the campaign - it's so good you were involved *)
I suspect Jake will be working throughout his birthday and celebrating it on set.
BUT we are all getting cake in, all right. We'll have a party :D
Did someone say cake? Where is it? Give me cake?! :D
I didn't know Candy was on tv last night, I would have recorded it had I known. I saw it at LFF last year: thought Geoffrey Rush was particularly good, although of course it was Heath that made me want to see it.
I'm hoping to go and see I'm not There next weekend. And I want to see Lust,Caution too!
What's this about a tent, Anouska? If it doesn't have an ensuite and a mini-bar, I ain't interested.
I forgot to say earlier that I'm so glad to hear that Zodiac is getting some recognition, even if its not in award form (yet). A truly wonderful film, in all manner of ways.
Thanks too for the link to the David Benioff interview. I read that the other day on the BBM forum, and its a truly fascinating read, I'd recommend everyone go read it. He talks about The Kite Runner mainly but also about Brothers, and both insights are fascinating. TKR is a film I definitely want to see, along with I'm Not There and Lust, Caution. I read a wonderful interview with Ang Lee last week about the film and about his direction technique. Remember Heath talking about how Ang would do virtually nothing on set, it was all in pre-production, wanting the actors to work hard and continue to do so in order to get the best out of them. Plus he talks about the rating of the film, he was expecting an NC-17, but wasn't sure because (quote from Ang Lee): "Is it four pelvic thrusts that earns you that rating, or three? I know the ratings board hates thrusts.”
Hi Ruby! Oh are you offering to bake a Jake Cake? Thanks! Minibar?? Anouska in a tent, that's not something I can visualise...
Get your supplies in for a Jake party on the 19th :D
If I can see I'm Not There this weekend then I will - Christmas shopping is entirely overrated.
Hi Christie - I read that Ang Lee interview, very interesting. To be honest I'm not at all surprised at the rating. Also fascinated by the idea that Ang's direction is all in pre-production and then leaving the cast to deal with it. It's obviousy a method that works.
Hi everyone! I watched Candy last night and thought it was excellent, you really have to see it if you haven't yet. I was planning to just watch some of it and watch the rest later cos it was on so late, but like Christie said, I was drawn in and I had to watch it all the way through. Heath and Abbie are excellent in their roles. It's a very powerful film that stays with you afterwards, it's been on my mind all day. I'm torn between wanting to watch it again and not daring to cos it was very difficult and painful to watch at times, but that just shows how good a film it is and how strong Heath and Abbie's performances were. I'm not surprised Heath was so passionate about it and its message (and how lovely of him to write to you, Christie). They should show this film in schools as part of drug education lessons, it would do more to put kids off than a thousand lectures. Brilliant film, that's all I can say. For those of you who missed it, it's worth keeping an eye on Film4's schedule cos they do often repeat the same film a number of times over a few weeks.
minibar??
Whatsup WDW? minibar not big enough for you? You want a full bar in your tent?!
INT is out over here on 21 December WDW, so you're out of luck this weekend.
I like Ang's comment about the pelvic thrusts. Not sure it took Ennis that many ;)
I'm very suspicious of minibars after my Rome experience... In addition to a report on 2007's red carpets, I could write one on the minibars I encountered along the way.
At this rate I may never see I'm Not There... :( I feel like it's never coming out.
Are you saying you counted Ennis' thrusts?
Can't believe I completely forgot about Candy last night - that's the evil of Xmas drinking for you :( - although it did produce my Jake the Hairdresser dream
Hey TL - you snuck in there :D I should have watched it, I find the subject matter so disturbing and I could tell I woud find it upsetting because of how likeable Heath and Abbie's characters were. The breadth of films that Heath has been in is amazing.
Agent K - Candy will be on again soon I'm sure, as TL says. I don't think you'd wanted to have missed having Jake cut your hair though :D
That's a very good point WDW, about AK's dream;) Although I have to say if it was me I would've swapped roles> I've always said if I can't be Jake's wife I'd settle for being his hairdresser, he has the most beautiful hair, I would give anything to run my fingers through it *sigh*
As for Candy, it is very disturbing as you say, but you can't help but like the characters and sympathise with them. Even when Dan was being an absolute tosser, there was still a vulnerability about him that made me root for him throughout the film and wish so much they would both sort themselves out. I'm sorry to go on about it, but it really got to me.
I like Candy, but I don't think I can bear to watch it over and over again. My heart can't take too many sad stories about junkies, after "Requiem for a Dream".
The funniest and the saddest line in the film I remember was when Heath said "she's a hooker and I'm hopeless".
Saw "I'm Not There" in LFF, it's good but in the experimental sense. Heath plays the "romantic, vain, flirtatious and mini-jerk" side of Dylan. But he's the most stylish and best-looking Dylan in the film. Hands down. :)
Hi TL well maybe you can swap over when he's finished running his hands through your hair... That's good Candy got to you like that, shows how good it is.
Hey Winterbird - I can't wait to see Heath as a sexy Bob Dylan... dreams are made of that kind of thing. Cady, I think, is just a little too disturbing for me. I enjoyed spending some time on Brokeback instead last night.
Hey Winterbird, that line made me laugh too,(in a sad way, like you say) but I thought it was Candy who said it "I'm a hooker and he's hopeless" when they were talking to the bloke from the estate agents but I could well be wrong, wouldn't be the first time! That's another thing I liked about the film, the dark humour in it.Like the old lady in the chemists asking "is that the flu vaccine?" The scene in the bank made me lol! But the line that got me the most, even though I can't remember the exact words, was when Dan says about clinging to the idea of change. The helplessness of wanting to change but not being able to and the delusion that the present was acceptable because one day it would change :( Ok, I will stop going on about Candy now, I promise:)
Oh blimey TL - I think you need to watch Bubble Boy tonight ;)
TL, so glad you got to see Candy and it had the same affect on you that it did on me. Heath and Abbey give phenomenal performances, and their chemistry was amazing. There were some very harrowing scenes, the hospital being the main one for me, and the shower scene. Heath gave himself a black eye in that. If you haven't read the novel it's based on, I'd recommend it. It's very graphic but excellently written by Luke Davies (who had a cameo role in the film, as the milkman who gives them free milk).
TL, I knew you'd love Candy. As Christie said it's such a profound movie and Jefferey Rush is to die for. The best part is the next time you watch it, it always seems to get better. I have a link to Heath in the press conference talking about it. I have to find it and I'll send it to WDW if she wants to post it. Heath is awesome and really loves talking about all his roles. Like Christie said, his last few films are so different. If you loved Candy then you need to see Casanova.
Chrisite, nicely said, they did have this trmendous chemistry but so did Heath and Jefferey too in a different kind of way. Dark humor all the way. Heath said in the press conference that he was blessed to work with Jefferey again.
Hi CWG - email me the link if you find it and I'll post it :)
I agree, CWG, about Heath and Geoffrey Rush's chemistry, it was wonderful. I loved the whole "gay escort" conversation. LOL But it was sad too. Would love to see the vid of Heath talking about it. Apart from anything else, his voice sends me.
I'm looking but I might have to wait until I get home to find the link later. Thank you WDW for offereing to post it. He also talks about BBM, so I think you'll love it.
Guys here is the Dark Knight trailer. It looks like Heath does a great job and we can also see Maggie, she looks good.

I couldn't make it clickable, just copy and paste it! ;)
Thanks for your comments about Candy, CWG and Christie! I agree with everything you both say. I will definitely try to get hold of the book and I'd love to see that link if you can find it, CWG:)
Oh, WDW, love your suggestion of Bubble Boy for tonight's Jake viewing!Lol:D Unfortunately, I don't have the DVD, I just taped it off the telly and it's somewhere in a pile of unlabelled tapes that I have waiting to put on disc. It never occurs to me to label tapes:( I think I might watch TGG tonight, I've been meaning to for a while and I'm in a "dark place" anyway after watching Candy.
Thanks Anon
TL - you need a labelling system ;) Fancy losing BBoy!!
So, has anyone seen Pia?
It's worth getting the Bubble Boy DVD, actually... because there are many behind the scenes stuff there and you can see poor young Jake getting in and out of that "bubble" in hot weather (and of course, everyone saying what a nice boy he is... :P)
check out your local HMV...i got it for under £5.
Yes indeed Winterbird but the best thing about it is the commentary with the director and 'Jakey' :D
Thanks for the advice Winterbird and WDW!I'll have a look for the Bubble Boy DVD with commentary then, I've heard it's well worth it;)
I like the bit where Jake is sent out of the room so the director (forgotten his name for the mo) can praise Jake. Later of course he hits him!
hi, y'all! been shoveling snow and checking Las Vegas weather report - nine thirty a.m., in the forties and clear - but why Las Vegas? it's a good sized town, history of filming, civil war battle ground, Billy the Kid, railway tales, etcetc. Havent been there. Why no leaks? Im dyin' a curiousity!
But looking forward to CAKE and JAKE.
I guess they arent actually sleeping in their trailers, or on the golf course - where are they sleeping? and is "the toucher" sleeping with Jake, or not? I mean, in the same - suite?
o gosh snow just fell off roof with a roar -
Hi Positively Pia - could to see you! Shovelling snow, eh? Didn't Jake offer to do that on the ZMorning radio show on the post the other night?
I know, there's very litle coming out of the Brothers set. It's frustrating. But I suppose it's still early days. Lucky 'toucher'...
I do believe it's the weekend :D
Crikey,WDW,give a hard-pressed,time-poor girl a chance to catch up! Just wanted to say hi and how much I loved all the "Brokeback" stuff in the last post - just played the promo video and got all choked again, as usual!Just the opening bars of the music and I'm gone!
I'll try to catch up with you all and say something meaningful over the weekend (like, I think Jake would have a well-packed lunch box ;-) !),but in the meantime, hugs to you all, enjoy the weekend and wrap up warm!!! Nxxxx
