Happy birthday Jake - A year of Jake moments

Even the freebie newspapers of London know today is a special day if you're a Gyllenhaalic - they kindly gave me Jake's horoscope to read on the way back home this evening. Not only that, Buzzsugar gave Jake a little present - having awarded Zodiac its prize as top drama, today Jake was announced (albeit a little and absurdly reluctantly) as top dramatic actor: 'The winner for this poll is technically Jake Gyllenhaal, with James McAvoy coming in second place. The most popular write-ins were Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin for No Country for Old Men, and Emile Hirsch for Into the Wild.' I reckon 'technically' means in this instance 'actually'.

Jake's birthday is the perfect date on which to embark on our Personal Moments Tour of Jake's year and our year, as we've endeavoured to keep up with him through long-awaited film releases, grand public events, and fantastic TV appearances as well as tried to keep track of him through a long (was it hot?) summer and a busy winter filming schedule. We've had glimpses of him out and about, on his own, with family, loved ones old and new, and the ride has been fun, emotional, sentimental and sometimes downright hilarious. But the ride hasn't been solo - this 19 December is so much better than the same date last year, because this time, my life is full of friendships, which are a direct result of this year with Jake and which I now cannot imagine life without. So I beg your indulgence to allow me to kick off the Personal Moments Tour with my own memories from the year.

No 1 - BAFTAs 2007

There are moments from the year, which are particularly special to quite a few readers and so I'll leave those moments for other days, but I have to start with the event that changed everything for me - Sunday, February 11 - BAFTA day. This event was a major day not just for me, but for three others, and I'm going to come back to it in the coming days. But for now, I just want to remember the moment when I heard over the radio headset I had been given that Jake Gyllenhaal was getting out of his car. I pushed forward (apologies to the professional autograph hunter I may have slightly shoved out of the way), looked left and saw Jake coming down the line, on our side, towards me. A few minutes later, he was right in front of me and I got my autograph and had the first opportunity to say Jake's name to his face - an ambition of mine, you see. The other prize from this Sunday is a knot of friendships I never want undone. The appalling pictures below are mine (that Jakequake I've mentioned before) and the good ones aren't.

No 2 - Zodiac premiere, LA, March 2007

The second event is a strange one because Jake missed it - a shame because I flew all the way to Los Angeles for it but there were compensations in meeting old and new friends. This was a very odd experience - we had discovered not long before that the 'proper' premiere in Hollywood had been cancelled (no reason given). The disappointment eased when we then learned at the last minute - literally - that there was to be a behind doors premiere at Paramount Studios. We sped through the streets of LA, thanks to a superb driver, and got as close as we can - ie, not close at all. We tried all our cheeky wiles to get through the Paramount Studio gate but security were mean. We tried to sneak in as press but we didn't have stepladders (always take a stepladder to a premiere...) and we got ejected. But, we had the honour of being among only a handful of fans, even if it meant that all we saw was a succession of limos and SUVs streaking past, some with people in them who wound down their windows to shout encouragement, and some with people in them who just taunted us.

Chloe was there, as well as Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr - I could just make them out. Emmy Rossum looked lovely. But no Jake and no David Fincher. But what we did get was Mark Ruffalo's brother who came out to take pictures of us. One woman, who I think was Mark's wife, yelled from her car as she passed that Jake was even more gorgeous in real life than on the posters some people were carrying. We also met a girl who had had her life changed by meeting Jake on the set of Moonlight Mile. She had spent a day with him and he had been wonderful, she told us. He had also told her to look him up when she was in LA. So she brought him a note but there was noone to give it too.

No 3 Cannes International Film Festival

The Zodiac gala at Cannes was indescribable, which is fine, because the pictures that came from that event and from the festival as a whole are sensational - they really are. They more than compensate for me not being able to describe this event in words. It was made more surreal by the fact that I came down with chicken pox that day and I had a fever, which, at the time, I couldn't explain, except thinking that maybe my Jake allergy was coming out again (I had a bad case of flu after the BAFTAs). One main difference about Cannes was that it was hot, very hot (I could write a medical report on the correlation between severe sunburn and chicken pox) but through a mixture of luck and hard work, myself and my two friends had a perfect spot to enjoy the whole event.

Again, I'll return to Cannes later, because several people enjoyed this event above all others in 2007. But I just wanted to share here my own personal happiness when, with the sounds of the Zodiac soundtrack belting out, I realised that Jake had heard us calling his name and I knew he was going to respond. He did and our own moment was captured by the world's photographers - and I really do think these are the best pictures of the event - the point, the cupped ear, the laugh and the wave. Strangely, I find the pictures difficult to look at and I know that one of my friends from that day feels the same.

No 3 - The pink bracelet

Many interviews and videos were recorded at Cannes and so many of them I have carefully tucked away. The two videos I love the most though are the Happy Birthday Cannes video - posted below - and the ITN overview of Cannes, which features Jake fascinated by his interviewer's snap-on pink bracelet. I'm surprised I haven't worn this video out. Enjoy it here.

No 4 Rufus Wainwright and Jake

If I had to choose a favourite moment from the year that I was not able to attend, then, with no hesitation whatsoever, it would be Jake coming onto the stage in NYC in June to join Rufus for the end of Between My Legs. As a fan of Rufus (I saw him with Ruby just a couple of weeks later), this was incredible and the huge pleasure I felt when a video at last came to light... A thrilling event for the audience in the theatre and for so many of us.

No 5 Toronto International Film Festival

My long weekend in Toronto was life-changing and I will remember it forever as one of the most special events in my life - there was no time for jetlag (after that initial exhaustion that Bobbyanna will remember!) and not enough time for what mattered. It was hot and the place was alive with movie stars and real fans and appreciators of good films. The place really didn't sleep and the atmosphere was incredibly exciting, full of anticipation. There was good food, good company, lots of cocktails and plenty of drama. Seeing Jake and Peter outside the press conference was unforgettable, but it was also so great to see people such as Gavin Hood, Omar Metwally, Kelley Sane and Chris Fischer, walking around the place, just like you or me. Again, I wasn't the only WDW reader to have been fortunate enough to have been a part of this and so there is more from Toronto to come.

No 6 Rome International Film Festival

I was fortunate to see Jake at a fourth event this year, and this time in one of my favourite cities, albeit so, so cold. I was very well looked after thanks to a another of the friends that I've made because of Jake this year. The stars were late to this one, too late, and so there was very little time. Just a few glimpses of Jake, as well as Reese, Gavin and Kelley. But because of Jake I reacquainted myself with a city I first visited as a student and now I associate it with him.

No 7 Gooberballs

I enjoyed everyone of Jake's shows for the Rendition promotion, most especially This Morning, Late Night with Jonathan Ross, the Heart radio interview and Conan. But my favourite, without doubt, was the Letterman Show and Jake's perfect rendition of his encounter with the drunken lady in his hotel. Jake's comic timing was perfect, as amazing as any of his performances in film. I regularly watch this during my long commute and I unfailingly laugh. I just can't help it. And I still maintain that wasn't me - I know how to make a damn fine martini.

No 8 The films

I was not alone in feeling cheated and angry by the repeated delays in the release date of Zodiac. It felt like it took forever to arrive, but at last it did and Zodiac captivated me from the first time I saw it at the Grove in LA (at the very first showing) and it still hasn't let go. Rendition seemed to arrive so quickly by comparison, with a shared release date between the UK and US. I saw it the first time in Toronto and, perhaps understandably, the whole event completely overshadowed the film for me and I could hardly remember a frame of it afterwards (except for Jake's opening scene...). When I did finally see it properly, it produced a very similar reaction in me that Brokeback had done. Zodiac is my film of the year, but Rendition is not far behind.

Thanks for listening!

Other highlights include the poetry reading with Stephen Gyllenhaal just the other week, joining in a web chat with Maggie some months ago now (when I asked her three questions, including why she lived in NYC and not in LA like her brother), the Zodiac Conan interview with the modern dance moves, and the moment when I held the Interview magazine in my own hands (also the fun of watching Anouska and Ruby buy handfuls of copies when it could at last be found in the UK). Although not a highlight, I also remember how I felt when I heard about the fire in Marin County that Jake and his family had been caught up in.

Last but not least, there's a party for Jake tonight and a very special guest is Pia's Hot Teddy Jake. And here he is, a gift for you, Pia.

This post includes a few of my favourite pictures, in no particular order, and it is dedicated to Jake and to all the readers who have supported WDW over the last nine months, but with a special mention to my dear Ruby and Anouska - we may argue incessantly (and good-naturedly and occasionally drunkenly) but doesn't that make life interesting? Thanks for listening and joining with me in sending best wishes and love to Jake for his 27th birthday. I hope he gets everything he wishes for when he blows out those candles.

Includes pictures from IHJ.

Bravo on a fantastic post, WDW!!!! Loved every minute of it and felt as if I were there with you at every moment! And OMG is that Pia/Jake Teddy bear adorable or what?!?! I want one! ;p Btw, I didn't know you asked Maggie questions during an online Q&A? Would love to hear more about that sometime.

Now, onto the Jake birthday celebration!!! I have some red wine -Shiraz- and the cheese fondue with some yummy bread and the Pigs in a blanket (mini hotdogs in pastry) all set to go! Who's ready to join in? :D

What a fantastic birthday post, WDW!!! Like get real said, I felt like I was there with you during your walk down memory lane. I loved hearing about your special moments and what they and Jake mean to you. You are so very lucky. I adore the Cannes pictures, so can only imagine how they make you feel since that wave, point and smile were all directed at you. Hard to believe.

I adore Pia's bear. I want one too!! He is the coolest bear I've ever seen. Will he become the WDW blog mascot?

Sorry I can't stay up for the party, have been working and am dog tired, but so glad I was able to be here for the start. Have fun, but please save me some cake. :)

Get real - I'm ready to join in. I'm in bed already, but I can party from here. :D

I didn't buy that many copies of Interview!! two of them were sent to friends overseas who couldn't get them! ;) I don't have a stash under the bed, honest. :D At least I didn't try to sell one back to the Borders employee. ;)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAKE!!

I forgot to mention that I loooove Pia's bear and I want one! :D

O gosh doesnt my bear have a LOOK -isn't he The Sex? Ive dressed him up in sunglasses, t-shirt and santa hat, he is so Jake! tee hee hee.

Ive been kissing him on the nose and telling him HE'S FAMOUS! - but he knew that, already. . . (flexing his biceps, the lil son of a bear. . . )

chuckle chuckle chuckle

Kate, of course you shared personal memories. I, for one, was in your pocket, all the way!

O gosh, what a year! the sparkly sea of Cannes - Jake's response to the Cannes contingent! - will life ever be so good! YES! Even better!

Thanks Kate! (Im popping mussels in wine with shallots - OMY!)

Did you like it?? I feel very self-conscious as this was a personal and emotional post and I don't want to bore y'all!

Thanks Uli - thre's so much more but I thought this could start things off. It's been an incredible year in so many ways...

Hey Get Real - thank you :D Pia's Bear is adorable and I must must THANK TWISTED LOGIC for all the great work she did by getting Hot Jake Teddy suitably dressed for the evening.

The Maggie thing was incredible - feels like such a long time ago. I'll have to find all my info on that and post some memories of that.

Onto the party!! I've not eaten anything yet so I'm ready to dive in - have red wine, so on to the dips!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks so much Christie - that's not a bad idea about Pia's Jake Bear - the mascot!! Looks cute doesn't he?

Thanks to you for taking this sentimental trip down memory lane with me - it's been so amazing :D

Hey Ruby - quite a year, indeed, and you've been with me all the way *) Are you sure you only bought two copies of Interview? Seemed like a lot more than that....

Positively Pia - we dressed Ted for you!! Doesn't he look gorgeous! Oo muscles in wine - one of my absolute favourites and takes me right back to beautiful Cannes :D

Great post wdw! :) Ah memories...
I still love Jake's interview cover, especially because he supposedly wears Heath's pullover. How cute is he to wear his friend's clothes all the time.

Wow. I loved reading your emotional post, and sharing your highlights WDW. It was some year for you wasn't it, don't feel self conscious, savour it!

The Cannes moment was just wonderful, I feel emotional looking at the pics...I can only guess how you all who were there feel. A Jake moment all your own..sigh..in fact all those moments are sigh enducing.

I'm way too tired to party..but I'm off to bed with a happy face now. Loved all the pics...and Pia's bear! OMG!!! I love him..

Anonymous said...

Ruby - partying from bed sounds really good! ;p

YES, sexy Jake Teddy should def. become the WDW mascot! Luvs it!!

Okay, broke out the Champagne (or Champers to the Brits ;)) to toast! Here's to Jake and here's to all the wonderful WDW and everyone who posts and who makes this blog the joy that it is. *Cheers*

Nibbling on the food goodies as we speak!

Thanks so much TL! I didnt know how to work with Hot Teddy's hat and tattoo - being a technobunny - but dropped a hint! bless your hearts for responding. If I could give up the Dozy Embrace, Id change my wallpaper.

In the meantime, GO Hot Teddy, GO -
he really wants an Oscar! although he realized it wouid be a REAL break=thru for bears!

This white wine is so good I may not even open "the blue shit" - but there it is - blue curacao and tequila. Sorta inspiring.

Believe me, WDW, there was nothing like Cannes - ! almost got chicken pox, myself!

Ruby said...

Slightly off-topic, but not really 'cause it's in your post.... the current edition of UK Esquire magazine has Rufus on the cover and a short interview with him, which I skimmed over in Tescos. There was a discussion here a while back about what Between my Legs is about - apparently it's about a New York hustler called - if I recall correctly - something like Tony Hotpants. :D

Ok back to the party............I'll take a Mojito please.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Are there drinks going rund - I'm just finishing my bottle of wine... Ruby can you pass the blue stuff? (love Rufus)

Thanks Anon - I love to see the clothes sharing too ;) Jake must be the size that fits all.

Night Rosie - Cannes was unbelievable and sometimes it doesn't seem real!

Ooh Get Real Thanks for the champers - definitely ready for it. And yes we must toast everyone here that has made this site so much fun :D

Hey Pia - we got your hint and TL's been working on it for days - she's just wonderful. But then Bear is adorable - and I think we should all have one... You're not going to bother with the blue stuff? That's a shame - I have a cupboard full of it.

Anonymous said...

Hey, Ruby!

Has anyone made a drink with the "blue sbit" yet? Hard to explain to Jonathan, the delivery kid from the booze store, why I was buying this stuff.

Gosh the mussels in wine are good! I made rice with candied ginger and pecans, too.

I look at my Teddy in his sunglasses and white t- and say, O gosh, I just wanna kiss you. and I do!

Anonymous said...

Well, it's true, Ruby - I did try to sell one copy of Interview back to the till guy in Borders. He was definitely keen and I nearly had a sale :):)

Thanks for the reliably great prose and wonderful memories, WDW. Wish I'd been at Cannes as well as BAFTA - and thank you for finding me Happy Birthday Cannes again ** a person'd need to be dead not to giggle at it and I really appreciate the laugh today :)

Long may we three laugh, bicker and argue about angels on the head of a pin, and books not yet written. Love to our BAFTA sistah mouk as well and to Cannes birthday boy of yesterday, Ingmar (if he reads here).

Pia, I've a theory about that teddy bear of yours. I think your shrink is trying to effect a transference from Jake to the bear. I get the impression from what you've posted that it might just be working :D

I have some leftover Valhrona chocolate and orange torte for the party, with creme fraiche - any takers, WDW?

Anonymous said...

o gosh MDW you really have a closet full of blue curacao? it took me a bit of googling to even learn how to pronounce it! (not to embarass myself in the eyes of the divine Jonathan) I needed more wine glasses, too. J said, red or white. I had no idea that there are diff'rent wine glasses for red and white wine!

I frankly dont have the nerve to make a blue margueritta. but gosh it's Jake's birthday!

Anonymous said...

Anouska! hahaha! yeah, my shrink is working really hard on this! any ideas about how to FOIL her? Im all ears! (see Donnie Darko, second scene)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pia - just keep kissing the ted. I'm short of one ingredient for an Aqua Velva - no soda. Is that necessary? I can do a Bloody mary though but it won't be blue. I suppose I could try and make it blue.

Hey Anouska1 I remember you trying to sell a copy back to the guy in the shop - he nearly went for it, didn't he? I wish you'd been at Cannes too :) The way the three of us bicker and argue is just so much fun - thanks for our birthday lunch today :D I wonder if the waitress has guessed what we're arguing about!

Can I have some of those leftovers - they sound fabulous. And huge love to our Bafta sister Mouk and my Cannes brother Ing *)

Is the bear tipsy yet?

Anonymous said...

O god chocolate? Ive got Cote D'or 70 percent cocoa to share!

(back to the mussels, god they're sweet!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pia I have a cupboard full of blue stuff but I can't pronounce it ;) I'm so good at making blue margaritas though. I'm out of lemons so I can't do one tonight :( I love red wine glasses because they're so much bigger!

Ruby said...

(((Anouska))) good to see you. *) Orange torte with creme fraiche sounds delish.

Pia tell us more about the divine Jonathan ;)

and are those Blinde sunnies that the bear is wearing? :D

twistedlogic said...

What a fantastic post, WDW! " fun, emotional, sentimental and sometimes downright hilarious" - that totally sums it up! It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, hasn't it? I love how you describe all your Jake memories and you've got some gorgeous pics to go with it:) Thank you so much, not just for tonight's post, but for all of them over the last year. You do a fantastic job here, there's so much stuff about Jake I would never have kbnown about if it wasn't for you. Finding this place, and the people here, is definitely one of the highlights of my year:)

Glad you like Hot Teddy's new look, Pia;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ruby - we never bought the sunglasses! We have to do that, mine are wearing out. Jake bear is more prepared than we are... Orange torte :P Can I have some?

Aww TL - thank you! Meeting you has most definitely been one of the very best points of my year *) Thanks for all you do to help with the site. And look what you did to Hot Teddy? He's now extra Hot.

Anonymous said...

O yes Ing and Mouk bless their hearts!

Hot Teddy cracks me up in his white t - he is SO COOL - like those meatballs on SNL - O Jake, come on, you sure you wanna miss our party?

Aqua velva; soda? NO WAY? Im gonnma do blue marguerittas. (sp?)
tequila, the blue shit, lime juice and salt.

if I last past this very good white wine. . . salut jonathan!

Anonymous said...

Pia, it might be too late to foil the shrink but you could ask her what you are *supposed to do* now that the transference has *worked* and you are fixated on an inanimate (albeit cute 'n' fluffy) object?

Big refund due, maybe?

Mind you, with the cap sleeves and tat I could go for him myself :)

I think you need to tell her about Jonathan. He is allowing himself to be your container, by the way :D

(WDW, so sorry to bring serious to the party, but I love this shit ;)).

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pissed pia - White wine has never agreed with me - best to stick with the red stuff. As for the blue stuff, better in margaritas than Aqua Velvas quite possibly. Hope you're letting Hot Ted have a drink.

Hey Analytical Anouska - that's fine - analyse away - but I can't understand a bloody word you're saying, mate ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Container??

Anonymous said...

Blindes are good but I hope hot Teddy never gets into the aviators. Dang, we're all falling for the bear ...

Nice work, TL *

(((Ruby)))

Wet Dark and Wild said...

As it's a party I think I'm going to have to put Bubble Boy highlights on :D

Anonymous said...

I'll tell you ALL about containers next time we meet, WDW ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks.... I think :\

Anonymous said...

I dunno WTF kind of sunglasses this bear is wearing, he's into his own thing, he wants an effing Oscar! honestly!

Jonthan? He is young and darling, why is he working in a booze store in Stockbridge. must be writing a novel. he has a girl friend and a pig tail. he and his girl friend sit in front of the fire and read F Scott FitzGerald and dont watch TV. Cool!

he is very interested in My Life. (must be writing a movel). remembers everything about my college b.f. Ralph Buntrock Draves, football hero, and his slut sister Corneli, who grew up in Gatsby country on Long Island. Must be writing a novel.

Anonymous said...

It'll be OK :)

Fix a round of drinks, WDW, my sobriety is killing the party :) None of that blue stuff, though.

Anonymous said...

LOL Pia, we *heart* you :)

Anonymous said...

Anouska! I wanna know about "containers" I have a feeling my shrink is kinda behind the times. She's fallen for Jake, actually - she actually thinks the bear LOOKS LIKE HIM (in a mood of gravitas) - although not yet, herself, made a projection onto The Bear.

Help!

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! We need to find an excuse to have lunch again;) And as for anything I've been able to help with, you're totally welcome:) And I had fun with Hot Teddy, so thanks Pia for letting me borrow him;)As TL Jr has decided at the ripe old age of 8 that she's too old for teddies, our yearly trip to the Build a bear shop didn't happen this year,so Hot Teddy made up for it in a way:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I feel like I'm in a novel listening to this, Pia! All right, Anouska, I'll do a round - this time - my fave - Cosmopolitans :D

What do you think Jake will have for his birthday dinner? And what kind of presents will he get? Maybe Stephen got Jake something from his visit to London... (like my phone number for instance - ooh did I say that outloud ;))

Wet Dark and Wild said...

TL - No excuse is needed, we just need to do lunch whenever you can get free :D Can you decipher what Pia and Anouska are talking about??

In reply to queries, Hot Teddy is not getting lit. he is totally focused upon his Career.

until this moment it's all been in his head. now that he has fans, he feels SANE and READY TO GO . . .

Lovely post, WDW! Lovely. Funny. I didn't go to BAFTA, but I felt as if I was there on the red carpet with you. I remember vividly, waiting for "reports" from all of you who were there for all of us. But my most special moments will have to be Toronto. Not only did I get to see Jake... and actually make eye contact, and exchange a few (very few) words(!) but I saw Chris and Peter and Reese as well as Omar, Gavin and the Incomparable Kelley Sane.(Did I say that right? LOL!)And I actually got to talk to both Gavin and Kelley. (The cool thing about TIFF is that you can actually walk up to a director and tell him you really liked his movie.) But most important of all, at TIFF I met WDW and other Jake fans I've come to admire so much! I think Jake would very much enjoy the fact that through our love and admiration for him, we've met one another!

Thanks, WDW, for sharing your incredible Year of Jake with us! It doesn't seem possible that all that took place in just one year. We were all there with you all the way.

No, seriously, really seriously. I want me a Jake Bear too. It's exudes Jake's incredible studly, confident, sexy air. A confident studly Jakey Bear! If we could ever buy one, I'd like too.

Ok, his stance, the sunglasses, the way he looks right at you from behind those sunglasses, and the white T-shirt and Jeans all fitting nicely round that sweet Bear ass scream Jakey. But....... I'm thinking the Santa Hat (wink wink) is probably what's putting this Bear in the dangerous sexy zone for me!

What a rollercoaster year has been,eh?

I will never forget all the cold we got in Rome that day, as I will never forget the thrilling waiting for Jake to arrive!

Such great moments of 2007, WDW, and you are so lucky to have experienced them. *sigh* It's nice to hear your thoughts about them. I'm not sure which of Jake's 2007 films is my favorite, Zodiac or Rendition, I love them both. Thanks! :)

Hi all :) Got back from my last commute until the New Year - how good is that!

Just gotta say Anon - that bear has The Pose - it doesn't even need to work it ;) If ever a bear was intended to look like Jake it's that bear.

Bobbyanna - thank you! TIFF was about Jake but it was just as much spending time so many miles from home with such good friends. I'm grateful to you and your daughter for everything (including the way you can both fight your way to the front of the line for the drinks at the bar...)

Time for some fish n chips...

woof woof woof you're home WDW and have some holiday! yay! (wags tail madly runs around in circles)

enjoying reviewing your birthday post today when more hsha sober - and that darned teddy, he got a big head from all the attention, thinks he's gonna be on tbe cover of Interview, "Hottest Bear In Amwerica." (Settle down, cowbear. . .")

Im not surprised you can barely tolerate lookin' at the Jake Waving From Red Carpet in Cannes picture - makes me weak and I wasnt even there!

Also, speaking of weak-in-the-knees, when Jake comes out to join Rufus - well it is a defining moment of the year - dont know what it defines, the whole Jake stuff is a mystery to me! - but I love that moment!

Hi,everybody! Hope everybody's safe and warm!

I find it so funny when people say something about Jake as if it's news - I don't know whether to act surprised and appreciative or outraged!

Unfortunately, I'm not quite done for the holidays yet - working at home tomorrow and then that's it for a week and a half :D
