It's winter (I'm quick like that) and for many of you the snow is falling and you're shovelling paths. It's undoubtedly chilly for all those who might be filming in Santa Fe and New Mexico. So it seemed like a fitting time to do a special on Jake's most wintry of endeavours, The Day After Tomorrow. Each of Jake's films has a different role to play - you can turn to Jack Twist when you're in the mood for love but, speaking for myself, no character makes me smile like Wet Sam.
We've heard Jake in interviews in past posts talking about the environmental message behind The Day After Tomorrow, but in this podcast you can listen to Jake tell you why he wanted to do this big film, how demanding the shoot was, and what he took away from Spider-Man. You can listen to the podcast here and you can also download it. The interview also features the lovely and lucky Emmy Rossum and director Roland Emmerich.
As someone who has never made apologies for enjoying blockbusters (with the notable exception of superhero franchises), I do like to hear Jake talk about how much he loves them too: 'I've always wanted to be in a movie like this, despite what kind of the movies I've done in the past might say... All these summer movies that will come out this summer I will go and see. I'll go and see them with all my friends. I have seen them for years in the past and I've always wanted to be in one and hopefully will be in a lot of them.'
'Something changed in me when I saw Spider-Man actually, I have to say... There was a movie that was a huge movie, that was made for a lot of money, had incredible special effects, but it also had a story that, though it was simple in a lot of ways, was something really important for people to see at the time that it came out - which is just about love, like it's just a love story, but all the love stories that we've seen even in smaller movies become so cliche and it was really great to see a story like that. And something in me switched and said Wow, you can actually be in a movie that is a huge movie, that is like hugely entertaining and so much fun! That some people walk out of going 'Oh wow, there's something to think about' or there's something to feel. Not everybody will but some people will and that was really cool as I think that's why I want to make movies.'
'I mean I'm not just an actor sitting here for attention, I'm an actor here sitting here because I need my life to have meaning too, you know what I mean! I want to be in movies that have a point to them and I want to spend seven months of my life making a movie so that when it comes out I go 'That was really worth it!' That's how I feel walking out of this movie, like it makes me feel proud.'
As for all the action scenes, running from wolves, leaping over cars and the like: 'Well, I trained for six months in Malta, highly conditioned my body. No! I didn't really do much of anything. They were pretty demanding but I'm a masochist so I like it... It got demanding running up and down stairs but it wasn't like a lot of these guys are doing in movies this summer.'
'You walk into this movie and you will leave this movie being completely entertained. I'm a really harsh critic of thesse movies and I sense when people are faking it and when they're not, like pretty well. I know when I am and I know when other people are. When I walked out of this film, I was just like...Yeah! I'm so excited that this movie had a point but I was really excited that the movie just was awesome and huge.'
New/old pictures from London
This feature includes photographs from the UK premiere of The Day After Tomorrow. And to continue the theme of Jake in London and Jake in London with Kirsten, here are some new old pictures just posted at the wonderful IHJ from July 2003, a time when it was warm enough to sit out and watch the world go by.
And finally
Talking of big summer blockbusters, the biggest of next summer, and one you can bet Jake will be seeing featuring as it does both Maggie and Heath, will undoubtedly be The Dark Knight. The poster has just been released.
Includes pictures from IHJ and The Hollywood News.

Hi WDW,
Love this post - I finally picked up a copy of TDAT for my collection. I agree about Spiderman's message - one of my favorite movies. Sometimes the big blockbusters can be all they are cracked up to be. Love the poster for The Dark Knight and can't wait to see it. The pics I've seen of Heath look fab. Also love these pics with Kirsten - the expression on Jake's face in the last one is just to die for. *sigh*
Aww...I love Jake interviews! Thank you for this one. I love that series of pics of Jake and Kirsten in London, I think he looks so gorgeous in them.
That Dark Knight poster is fantastic too, I can't wait for that film to come out. Maggie and Heath both in the film is a double plus, and you can bet Jake will be seeing it.
Hi Bertie Thanks. I love TDAT and I love, love this interview :D I also enjoy Blockbusters enormously except, srangely, Spider-Man! Jake is so gorgeous in those pictures and I adore Kirsten. I know - *sigh*
Hey Rosie I'm so glad you like the interview and the pictures. The poster is fabulous! This is one superhero film I'll be seeing on Day One. It feels special because of Heath and Maggie.
I know, he does look gorgeous in these London pics, doesn't he? I love when his hair is slightly mussed, and he's got a bit of a stubble goin' on. Kirsten looks a little demure, (but also like she adores him, and who could blame her?) but Jake looks like he's going to take her in his arms and kiss her at any moment, and who cares who sees? What a great picture. *sigh*
I love bedhead "am I asleep or am I awake" Jake look, oh gosh. Love the brown jacket.
Took a friend to a Batman movie, she kept looking at me in horror: "you like this stuff?" I do, I do.
Saw Timothy Dalton as Jas Bond last night reminding me there are none as beautiful and charismatic as Jake and movies like this could be funnier, more clever than they are. In my next life I'd like to be a script writer.
More and more I want to write the script for a Joe Namath biopic. I wonder if Jake can still call forth that "I just wanna kiss you" look.
And yes TGIF. Ivw been dealin' with terrorists all week long. Takin' next week off for partyin'!
I wonder if Jake can still call forth that "I just wanna kiss you" look.
Oh God help me . . . :0 Pia you hit the nail on the head with that comment. You should be a scriptwriter! :)
Without doubt, Bertie, these pictures of Jake with Kirsten are among my favourites, not least because they're also in London :D Happy days...
Hey Pia - scriptwriter sounds good :) I've never been a fan of the Batman movies (I've not seen one so I'm probably being unfair) but I'm seeing this one all right. I love blockbusters though - I love the occasion of going to the cinema on a Sunday afetrnoon, buyig popcorn and sweets and losing myself in a big, big picture that makes me, like Jake, go WOW!
I still maintain that Jake would make the perfect Jakes Bond, I know he's not British, but he could either do the accent or they could make an exception for Jake. He just is the part and he'd be perfect in that suit.
A week off sounds great - I have one more week to go... It's gonna feel like a month.
And how hot he'd be in the love scenes - OMG - there was a funny line last night in the Bond movie when a guy got blown up like a balloon and exploded in a sort of convector where there were also millions of dollars and one of the latino drug dealer's henchmen said : what about the money? and the drug dealer said: launder it.
there were two few clever lines, though, and not enuff showing off of Bond's body - and frankly I dont think sex HAPPENED before Jake.
p.s. Jake would do a wonderful British accent!
Another greatly entertaining post, WDW, thank you.
I have to say I am not a great fan of TDAT, although I do think Jake looks great as Sam, but that's me being shallow. One of the very first non-BBM interviews I saw of Jake was for TDAT - I had asked a friend of mine who was a HUGE Jake fan to send me her favourite Jake interview. Jake was wearing a very big, warm winter coat, being interviewed in what looked like a hotel made of ice! It was a great interview.
I have to say that I adore those pics of Jake and Kirsten in London. There's another one in this series that I love too, the one of Kirsten kissing Jake on the cheek. *sigh*
I saw the trailer for TDK and it looked amazing and Heath was as scary as hell. I listened to an interview Heath gave talking about TDK and it was fascinating.
Wouldn't it be great to see Jake at the premiere of a film starring Heath and Maggie?
and frankly I dont think sex HAPPENED before Jake that's true enough...
Incidentally, I saw Timothy Dalton on stage as Antony playing against Vanessa Redgrave's Cleopatra, such a long time ago.
How mch would I love to hear Jake doing a British accent?!!
Hey Christie - I included that interview you mention in a post here some months ago - I'll search it out. That picture with the kiss is great! I didn't include it as it's not one of the 'newer' pics from the day.
The trailer for TDK disappeared from YouTube sooo quickly ;) Yes, I'd love to see Jake at that premiere. But whatever, if there's a UK premiere, that's a place to be :D
TD and VR in Cleo - well that must have been a treat! VR is always a treat and TD is very handsome. friend told me this morning TD plays gay in Lion in Winter, and said LIW is a good film so I put it on my Netflix.
That production is undoubtedly one of the best I've seen, up there with Robert Lindsey's Hamlet and Daniel Day Lewis' Hamlet. But Lion in Winter - you HAVE to see that Pia, that's one of my favourite films of all time. TD plays the French King Philip, suitor of Richard played by Antony Hopkins. To see Jake in a period drama like that... I would love to see that!
p.s. WDW Im glad you agree that Jake invented sex. :) :)
I was sure that the Kirsten kissing Jake pic wasn't a 'new' one, it's just a favourite of mine. And the ones you posted are lovely too, I like the one of them looking at (what looks like) a gossip mag. It might not be of course, it could have been the New Scientist or The Lancet :D
I'm glad you knew which interview I meant from my poor description - but then you are the Jake expert around here, not me ;) Didn't he look snug in that coat?
So the TDK trailer has gone from YouTube already? I suppose I'm not surprised. Someone said the official one is coming out soon.
If Heath was at the London premiere of TDK, I would definitely make the trip. Seeing Jake and Maggie there would be like icing on the cake.
And as for Jake doing a British accent, I am with you WDW, I would love it.
Oh God, the thing I have always loved about James Bond is that he's got that polished and refined exterior, but you know that underneath, there's that "bit of rough" just waiting to come out with the right woman. The only American actor who could possibly play James Bond is Jake - he's got those looks (Jake in a tuxedo, anyone?). Jake in a period drama? Oh yes. I better stop now before I get all hot and bothered. lol ;)
Yum, ** AUSTIN ** Thank you WDW :)
I will go back and read the whole post and listen to the interview, I promise :):) After some spring rolls and a nice chilled glass of white. Hope you enjoyed your day working at home *
I like Kirsten's blue-grey dress in that photo, she looks very cool.
We should play identify the cafe when we have a bit more time.
Talking of Bond, I read Daniel Craig is trying to de-cheez the script for the next one - I hope he succeeds as the only thing that drives me crazy about Bond is the tired old repartee!
Oh I love them lookig through that mag Christie and probably doing the crossword. The paper looks like the Herald Tribune, I suppose. I think the official TDK trailer will be out very soon and a better version than the one that YouTube removed today.
Bertie - I agree - noone wears a tux or could look the part of Bond like Jake. Where's the petition? But Jake in a classy period drama would be sensational. He's 27 (almost) we have plenty of time and huge treats to come:)
Anouska - you muct listen to the intrview, you'll love it. Today was OK but my car is sick and still being treated :( I think I know where this cafe is but it needs more work. I think Kirsten looks gorgeous :)
Anouska - I think Craig is such a good Bond (although remember how we ignored him at the Baftas, sweeping past him to go to the pub and toast Jake!!) but one man can do it better. I enjoyed Casino Royale though.
From a woman's point of view, the James Bond movies I thought were always fun-but-cheesy-sexist, but the only thing that made them half-way tolerable was Sean Connery. But they are fun. ;)
I've enjoyed James Bond movies over the years, but never have seen an actor who could match Sean Connery's primal sexiness. Daniel Craig has come the closest, even though he's a blond! Go figure. Jake has that kind of sexiness too. :)
Jake IS Bond without even trying ;)
p.s. Jake would do a wonderful British accent!
PIA, I can't tell you how much I want to hear that! I'm sure I could be his dialect coach. :D
I didn't ignore Daniel Craig at the Bafta's! I thought he looked very relaxed and hot and movie-stary. He seemed to be enjoying the attention. At least as far as I could tell when WDW and Anouska were dragging me away saying they desperately needed alcohol!! ;)
If Jake needs a dialect coach Ruby then get in line :)
I remember at the Baftas that Daniel looked pretty hot and fun but somehow my mind was elsewhere! Did we really drag you off? I know that after seeing Jake like that I just wanted to find a bar, toast Jake and sob!
Just saw an advert for BBC News 24 and it featured Jake at the Baftas!! Coincidence or what!
Exactly, WDW - I was overcome with emotion - otherwise Daniel would have got more of a look in :)
They must be re-running that News 24 ad - I always stop what I'm doing for it :)
I'm baffled by the TD Lion in Winter - I only know the original Lion in Winter?
*rushes off to IMDb*
I know, Daniel was great but he just wasn't Jake :) I remember being cross with Helen Miren because I saw Jake give her a kiss on the cheek and then she stood in the way! I love that advert - sod the news, just keep playing the ad...
Timothy Dalton WAS in the original Lion in Winter Anouska - but as a very young man. He looked very different.
Sorry WDW, I've been trying to forward you the Heath press conference but I don't think it's available any longer. I loved Kirsten and Jake together, they looked so happy, what happened?
Hi CWG Thanks for looking, I was looking too and I reckon it's gone now. I found a link but the video was no more :(
Hey WDW! Guess what? I can't get this interview to play either:( It's been "connecting" for the last 20 minutes or so but I suppose that could just be my computer, so I'll keep trying it.
As you know, I'm not a big fan of TDAT, but it does have its compensations ie Wet Jake and the special effects. And it is quite funny in places, albeit unintentionally;) Love the pics of Jake and Kirsten in London, just gorgeous.Thank you:)
You can add my name to the petition for Jake to play James Bond! I would LOVE to hear him do an English accent, and I might as well add my name to the list of potential voice coaches while I'm at it;) I remember switching over to watch this year's Baftas, after watching TDAT, just as Jonathan Ross was announcing the next presenter as "the sexiest man in the room" so of course I was congratulating myself on my brilliant sense of timing when it turned out JR was talking about Daniel Craig! Not that Daniel Craig's not sexy, but come on, if Jake's in a room then obviously he's going to be the sexiest man there;)
OOh! The interview just started playing!Yay!!! Off to drool over the pics and Jake's voice:D
Loved the interview! I could listen to Jake all day, even if he was reading the phone book his voice would have me swooning. And I love him impersonating Roland Emmerich! That's a very good German accent, so more proof right there that he could do an English accent if he put his mind to it. I still think he needs us as voice coaches though, just to make sure;)
Like all the James Bond talk. I'm not a fan of the films, but I would be if Jake played him. Apparently Daniel Craig comes from round these parts, my childminder went to school with him (which she likes to tell me all the time!!). It's the same with Batman, I would never go to the cinema to see that, but now Heath is The Joker, I'll be first in the queue (hopefully).
I was listening to an interview on Radio 4 the other night with Marc Forster, who directed The Kite Runner (and also Monster's Ball). He is going to be directing the next Bond film.
CWG, I'm sad that you couldn't find the "Heath talking about Candy" vid. I would have loved to have seen that. Was it when he was at the Berlin Film Festival, or was it another time?
Morning everyone! The weekend at last...
Hey TL, when I put this up I was wondering if it would work for you and hoping it would. Phew! I do like Daniel Craig, he just suffers by comparison, on screen and on the red carpet.
I enjoyed hearing Jake's German accent too - I want to give him a list of accents to try...
Morning Christie I love the Bond movies but like you this is the first Batman movie I'm looking forward to. Ih Heath's interview was in Berlin, I think it's been removed unfortunately.
Have a good day :)
Morning everyone, hi Chrisite, that Candy press conference was in Sydney, Australia. It was good and I found the link but the video is down. It was long like over an hour in length. If you want me to go into detail about what he said I do remember some things so let me know. Hope everyone has an awesome weekend, I'm gearing up for skiing myself.
Morning CWG You're up early! Enjoy the slopes :D
G'morning y'all - !
Six a.m. and man, it's cold down thar in Las Vegas, N>M> seven degrees F. Brrrrr.
And in Western MA "It's gonna snow tonight, for sure."
Gotta shower: see you later.
Another superb post WDW! Talking about casting James Bond, while I love Daniel Craig to pieces, and think he is brilliant, when you mention the "bit of rough" under that smooth Bond exterior, I think of Heath. Bet he would have made an extraordinary Bond! Maybe they will cast him for a Bond Villian. His voice in TDK trailer is nearly unrecognizable! I would love to see Jake play a baddie, too. A very assertive baddie. I hate to admit this, but when Douglas Freeman got assertive I liked it ...a lot! I know that often actors look at storylines and say, "Well, that's already been done!" They rightly struggle to avoid cliches. They want to do something more demanding, but it seems that an actor would look at the character and the unique interpretation he can infuse a character with. I mean, Shakespeare's already been done.
I feel pretty confident Jake will be at the premiere of TDK. In a way, this is Maggie's big deal, too. I don't think she has ever done anything like this. I just hope they allow her to be more tha an appendage. The World Trade Center by Oliver Stone didn't give her much breathing room, IMO.
Morning WDW...another fantastic post...so much to read and digest.
I'm in for a really great Saturday.
Ah, Jake as Bond sounds delicious. I loved some of the books; if I remember correctly, book Bond was blonde.
Thanks again Kate...see ya soon:)
"frankly I dont think sex HAPPENED before Jake." [Positively PIA]
Stephen and Naomi would have had to figure it out, or Jake and
Maggie would never have existed..... But I think I know what you *really* mean. If Jake ever arranged to give out free kisses, a very long line would immediately form. ;-) Emmy Rossum had exactly the right idea: go for it, before Jake realized what she had up her sleeve. :-)
"noone wears a tux or could look the part of Bond like Jake. Where's the petition? But Jake in a classy period drama would be sensational. He's 27 (almost) we have plenty of time and huge treats to come:)"
[WDW]
Daniel didn't get tapped for James Bond until he was 37 or 38.
He's so good at the character that he could easily have the franchise for ten more years. Then when Jake is 37 or 38, he could be Bond.
I know there are many who hope he won't do "Nailed," but I think he should do it. As a Congressman, he could wear lots of wonderful suits.... ;-)
Morning Pia! Brrr - a bit warmer here today, well if you count hovering around 0 as warmer. Blimey, that's cold in LV NM!! I think I'll stay in...
Thanks Bobbyanna - I liked it when Douglas got a bit rough too ;) Jake has just the right mix of suave and tough to be Bond. I hope Maggie gets a good deal with TDK too - she was the best thing in WTC.
Hi Sass - I grew up on the Bond books and the written character is completely different from the Bond of the films. Have a good Saturday - mine's been one of hanging around, waiting for my car to be fixed.
Hey Paulh - very good point about the sex part and thank God they did sort it out. Emmy knew what she wanted and she got it - I like that in a girl. The best thing about the Nailed project is that Jake would look good and be a rogue.
Maybe Jake should play a Bond baddie?
Yes, great outfits! & Jake has great taste, or is it his stylists?
Nah, it's him. And of course the gorgeous bod.
Im watching Grey's Anatomy to check out Patrick Dempsey at the urging of several friends. (shrug shrug Im not impressed)
(also: urp! over the bloody stuff)
However, the women wear great jackets and scarfs, reminding me that Jake's wardrobe choises are really pretty extraordinry, doncha all think so?
CWG, I so want to see this Heath video. I've been looking myself with no joy. I would love to know more about it, but maybe you could email me? I'm happy for WDW to pass on my email address to you.
I just read that Moonlight Mile will be on BBC1 on Monday night! YAY! And A Knight's Tale is on tomorrow night.
WDW will you send Christie my email addy so we can connect please, thank you :)
Hi CWG and Christie - I've sent you both emails - I should have been a matchmaker ;)
Hey Pia I just love Jake's clothes, old or new :D
You make an excellemt matchmaker WDW, thanks for the info.
Thanks CWG - spent hours doing the post tonight - someone pour me a glass of vino.... :\
Hey - did you get my phone message? I have some stuff for you. Good stuff!
Give me a call...
Looking forward to seeing you, Major Grooves - always like a surprise :) Does it involve Jake wrapped up in Christmas wrapping paper, tied with a ribbon and a note saying 'Do not open until Christmas day'?
Oh Bobbyanna, I so agree, Heath would make a great Bond too. I just saw the trailer for TDK and he is absolutely thrilliing as The Joker. Of course, you know I loved Douglas Freeman too.
And when I say "bit of rough" I mean "assertive", yes, but never overly agressive. I didn't want my earlier post to be misunderstood!
Hi ertie - I've just seen the 'dodgy' version of TDK trailer and it looks amazing - I need to see more Heath and more Maggie! I know what you meant by 'bit of rough'. But also Jake is a big man (if you see what I mean!) and it would be good to see some of that fitness and power expressed on the screen.
^^^ Oops, sorry Bertie, lost my B!
Oh yes, WDW, I surely do know what you mean. ;) I'd love to see that fitness and power expressed more onscreen too. *sigh*
