For many of us, this month and the next mark our two-year anniversary with Brokeback Mountain. I intend to do something more to mark the occasion but, in the meantime, I thought I'd share one of my favourite Jake and Jack Twist moments. In December 2005, Jake Gyllenhaal was cover boy of the Toronto Now magazine and an appreciative interview asked a relaxed and smoking Jake: 'And what if he, movie star Jake Gyllenhaal, could talk to a real life Jack Twist today? Gyllenhaal's big eyes get even bigger and that grin curls up. "I'd tell him, 'Gosh, I wish I could find a love that was so deep in my life. Oh, and don't worry, man. I've got your back.'"
Also in December 2005, Jake and Ang Lee were interviewed together for the Stanford Daily. During this interview, Jake admits that 'I’m a city kid, so I’ve never ridden a horse, and it was going to be a new experience. I think in the end that worked out for me because my character Jack is in a lot of ways always pretending to be better at things than he is.' As for the apparent violence of the love scenes, Jake says 'I think we were both dealing with it being uncomfortable, and the fighting was just a more comfortable, easier place to go. That’s how Heath and I related to each other. But there were other, harder, more tender scenes too. I have ex-girlfriends coming up to me after they see it saying ‘Hey, that’s not how you treated me!’'
Jake fends off the usual questions about kissing Heath with 'Plus, hey, we’re all human beings, we all have lips, you just get in there and do it.' When Jake was asked what it was like to work with Ang, Jake elaborated on his milk and water metaphor: 'I’ve gotta say that at times it could be very confusing. He would say things all the time... like with Annie (Hathaway) and me, he would say ‘You go together like milk and water,’ and I’d think what the heck does that even mean? Milk and water don’t really go all that well together, but then again if you pour milk into water is could kinda spread out all pretty? Is that what he means? Who knows?'
One can imagine the types of questions that both Jake and Heath had to face during the endless round of interviews for Brokeback Mountain, at the time of its release and in the run up to the Oscars. One journalist gave an entertaining, indignant and very sympathetic account of one such Brokeback press junket in which he is full of respect for the way in which Jake responded to the predictable and less than smart questions.
'Japanese man then ate breakfast until Jake came in, sat down, and the sexy Italian journalist asked, "What was it like kissing a man?" Are you kidding me? Lady, you've kissed one, you should know. And haven't we moved beyond this level of writing? He's an ACTOR. He is ACTING! And he's going to make some useless comment about chin stubble which is a waste of time. Fortunately, a smart writer across the way asked about getting into character, making his kisses second nature, which I thought really got to the point of the craft, character and story, thus a good answer was produced.'
'"Ang said he was trying to push you toward Heath during rehearsals but he went more towards Michelle," says Italy again. "Were you ever jealous?" What the hell is that? How is he supposed to answer? "Yes, and that's when I learned I was gay." I mean, what is she thinking? Because Jake was considered the romantic in the movie, she also asked, "What kinds of things do you do when you want to be romantic?" Then she says, "Can you describe the woman of your dreams?" followed by "Is there something really crazy that you'd done for love that you can tell us?" He said, "No," and I had to love him for it.'
'It's funny because journalists always complain about celebrities having attitudes, being demanding, or just being stupid, but I have to say Jake and Ang were two of the smartest, most humble people I met that weekend. And in case you're wondering, I asked Jake how it felt being a sex symbol for the gay community. He said, "It's fantastic."'
The Smell of Oscar Fever
Zodiac continues to get good reviews as the year closes and the Oscar race begins. I doubt that many critics believe that Zodiac will be able to win such an award but it's not stopping them from wishing that it could and from putting it on their lists.
Baltimore's City Paper polled critics to discover its top ten films of 2007. Zodiac is third on the list: 'Sometimes it feels like David Fincher's on a one-man crusade to move Hollywood forward. OK, "one-man crusade" is selling Fincher's cast and crew of hundreds short, but that's exactly the point: Fincher's the exception that proves the rule, the anti-Michael Bay, the rare director who works in this Hollywood of bloated crew sizes and CGI-happy postproduction yet still realizes his singular visions, telling riveting cinematic stories that reflect our time as well as a 1950s Billy Wilder or a 1970s Sidney Lumet did theirs. In this case, Fincher's tackled the dark, obsessive, rain-drenched tale of a real-life San Francisco serial killer and the people who sacrificed marriages, careers, and years of their lives in the hopes of decoding his ciphers and uncovering his identity. We can't think of a better way to spend three hours.'
FILMdetail has made its predictions for the Oscars and laments that Zodiac is ulikely to be a winner. 'Zodiac - In years to come people will (or at least should) look back on this film and wonder why it wasn’t showered with awards. But then Oscar history is filled with overlooked pictures. This was a stunning recreation of the Zodiac killings in San Francisco during the 60s and 70s and is arguably David Fincher’s finest work, complete with terrific performances from Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jnr. It deserves so much more but may only get a couple of nominations.'
Variety asked a series of experts what they thought of so-called reality-based films. 'Ex-cop Joseph Wambaugh liked what he saw in this year's "Zodiac," even if its makers couldn't corroborate every last detail as he did in his 1979 true-crime thriller, "The Onion Field." "'Zodiac' takes a strong position that the journalist (Jake Gyllenhaal) pretty much had figured who did it. Of course, that guy is dead. If he were alive, the film wouldn't have taken such a strong position. A dead man can't sue," Wambaugh points out. But is the movie killer the real Zodiac killer? "Your guess is as good as mine," says the scribe of the recent bestseller "Hollywood Station." "It's a helluva movie, but it's good that guy is dead."'
And to remind ourselves what Jake himself thought of this fine film, enjoy this video all over again.

Hi WDW and everyone! RL is the reason I've been AWOL for awhile, but I try to get here and catch up as much as possible. I just finished reading yesterday's comments so I'm a day behind. :)
Thanks so much for the radio interview - it's a gem! I just watched MM again and have to laugh at Jake's expression/wink when Joe and Ben are having dinner with Mulcahey, and Mulcahey asks "What do we brothers lack?" And Joe says "uh, so many things." And does that wink. It's such a Jake moment. :)
I saw your reply to Uli, that there is still time for the favorite moments of 2007 and pics, so I will try to get that accomplished as well.
And I may be in the minority here, but I love "Proof". Sure, the first time I saw it I didn't like Catherine/Gwyneth but as I watched it again, I understood her more, and sympathized with her, for what she had gone through. The key to Hal (for me) is when he says "I always liked you". I feel like he knew her a long time, and he still likes the person she was before, and he knows that person is still there inside, underneath all the hurtful things she says.
Thanks WDW for another great post. BBM being my favourite film ever in the whole world, I could talk about it all day! :) I loved what Jake said about Jack Twist, it made me gulp a little. And the journalist's experience at the BBM press junket was hilarious. I read the whole thing which went on a bit, but he makes some great observations about the banal and shallow questions that Jake had to deal with (and Heath too).
I want to hug Jake for saying "it's fantastic" to being a sex symbol for the gay community. That man has class.
Hi Neely - good to see you, you've been missed :D I'm so glad you liked the interview - I love it. I can't decide which Jake film to watch tonight - BBM, Zodiac or MMile.... decisions, decisions. I enjoy watching MM with jake's commentary.
I'll look out for your fave mo and pic :)
Hey, a Proof appreciator who is willing to stand up and be counted! I sympathise with Catherine's situation, I just don't empathise with the portrayal of it by GP. Jake does offer compensations, mind you. The last time I saw it, I did like it marginally better than the time before.
Hi Christie - we were posting at the same time :) That made me gulp a bit too - how wonderful to hear Jake show how attached he is to Jack. As if he couldn't be having portrayed him like that. I enjoyed the press junket account very much too - shows what class Jake has and he definitely deserves our hugs for his 'fantastic' comment.
It's nice to see that Zodiac is included on some lists as one of the best films of 2007, wich it definitely is!
Aw, thanks WDW - I missed being here. :)
About your decision - sometimes you just gotta close your eyes and shuffle the DVD boxes, and let fate decide. You can't lose.
And I do understand the feelings about GP. There are some actresses I can't watch. Luckily, none of them have been in Jake's films. :D
Hi Anon - How I agree! I can never say enough about how good Zodiac is. I'm glad to see it's not being forgotten.
Hey Neely - that's not a bad idea about the DVD cases. At least GP is the only co-star in Jake's films that I have a problem with, so not bad going really I suppose :D
Smokin' hot Jake! I doubt that he'll ever be as smokin' hot as when young and unfettered, what do y'all think? Seems to me he's had to sorta look after his OWN back, as his career has careened. And IMO he has done this very well.
Comparing the cover of NOW with the latest Esquire cover.
Enjoyed the Zodiac video although Id seen it before: I played it with my own music in background, concentrating on simply watching Jake and being again astonished at how each gesture delights me. Conversation today with friend about Patrick Dempsey (I agreed to watch first season of Grey's Anatomy), explaining that falling in love is a specific experience, and fairly irrational. Very deep, our convo. Very deep, "falling in love". :) :) :)
Hi Positively Pia - I find Jake hotter now that he's grown into such an incredible man, but yes I agree now he seems more fettered.
I've always liked this video and rewatch it quite often. This is Rendition Jake talking about Zodiac - can't beat that for me :D Definitely irrational, except in the case of Jake...
Bless yr heart WDW your love for Jake is rational? Teach me!
Ive been thinking, lately, about how J appears to engage all of his senses, and so engages all of MY senses - so much of my attraction is absolutely visceral! None other makes me smile, merely thinking on him. "Dont ask why, just say thank you."
"Where is Donnie?"
Thanks for the great post, WDW!
Jack Twist is my all-time favourite fictional character. I remember I once said to my friends, "I will always love Jake Gyllenhaal no matter what films he goes on to make in the future, for he has brought Jack Twist into life on big screen". (and of course, my friends all thought I was loony :P)
My favourite Jake's Jack Twist moment was duringn the Q&A session of a BBM screening, when asked how does he think Jack died, Jake answered, "I think Jack died when he realized he couldn't be with Ennis". When i first read about that, I think that was the moment I really fell for Jake (and not just him as Jack Twist)...
I haven't seen that picture of Jake and Annie Proulx! i'm gonna snatch that and cherish it in my flickr :)
And thanks for the news about Zodiac as well. It is Fincher's best work - period. My previous favourite Fincher movie was "Fight Club" and Zodiac just showed how much Fincher has matured and outdone himself. It's true that he's going against a tide... the dimwit Jerry Brockheimer/michael bay tide. Fincher could be the few prolific true artists left in Hollywood.
Hey Pia - Jake makes you smile like that too, just like me - he's a comfort to me at so many times.
Winterbird - that's a wonderful statement of Jake's and that certainly brings a lump to the throat. But it's also true. And it makes me feel so good knowing that Jake's Jack and our Jack are so similar - that we've read Jack in a similar way.
That picture of Jake with Annie and the one with Jake and Gustavo are among my favourite pictures of Jake, without doubt.
As for David Fincher - he can do little wrong in my eyes, but I think you know that :)
Did you say,
I've got a lot to learn.
Well don't think,
I'm trying not to learn.
Since this is the perfect spot to learn.
Teach me tonight.
Starting with,
the abc of it.
Right down to,
the xyz of it.
Help me solve the mystery of it.
Teach me tonight.
The sky's a blackboard,
high above you.
If a shooting star goes by.
I'll use that star.
To write I love you, a thousand times across the sky.
One thing isn't very clear,
my love.
Should the teacher stand so near, my love.
Graduation's almost here,
my love.
Teach me tonight.
I'll use that star.
To write I love you,
a thousand times across the sky.
One thing isn't very clear,
my love.
Should the teacher stand so near,
my love.
Graduation's almost here,
my love.
So would you,
teach me tonight.
I've lost all fear,
my love.
Teach me tonight.

apologies for taking up so much space, this post just swung me into a lovin' Jake mood -
Hey Pia - that's lovely - I love how Jake moves you to poetry, he has the same effect on me with music.
I did the DVD case thing and it came up MM so I'm watching Zodiac :D
Hey, I am here again!! ;)
Wow, WDW , that was exactly what I was about to say regarding the Jake quote about Jack in winterbird's comment. "It gives you a lump in the throat." I haven't seen that quote before and OMG I am really literally feeling that lump right now...
It sends me right to their last scene together and the "dead" look on Jack's face when Ennis drives away :(
Thank you for posting that great interview with Jake and Ang!
LOL at the part about carrying the saddle: "The first time we ran it I was all ‘Errrgh’ and stooped over, and some of the 40-year-olds on the set were like ‘Hey, we’re 40, not 80.’"
And I liked this one: "I don’t feel like I need to affirm anything to anyone."
Yay, you go Jake!!
Re: neely I like what you said about the "I always liked you" scene in Proof! I never saw it that way, but it sure makes sense to me!
Don't apologise Pia *) That's a good mood to be in...
I am very happy that a few critics have not forgotten what a fine movie "Zodiac" is. It has already gotten a couple of nominations by a Chicago critics group.
Think what it says about Jake that so many of the movies he's done have been films of real dis-tinction. The guy who was in a tent with Heath ledger is the same guy who talked to Frank the Rabbit, and did the Santa Dance, and introduced Paul Avery to the Aqua Velva.
Thanks so much for the BBM interviews - I love them! I hadn't read the Toronto one before (lovely pic too btw;) That journalist's account of the press conference was interesting as well. You've got to wonder how some of these people get their jobs! I mean, if I had the chance to talk to Jake about BBM I wouldn't waste time asking stupid questions abut kissing Heath. Jake must feel like a hamster on a wheel at these promotional junkets, going over the same thing time and again. In fact there's a quote in the Toronto interview "But this wasn't about politics. I don't think I could play a part with a political agenda. I work in the world of emotions, not politics." that I'm sure he said in one of the Rendition interviews! I suppose he must get used to using these stock phrases all the time but as the interviewer says "one look at his puppy-dog eyes and you believe it.". Let's face it, if Jake told me the Earth was flat, Paris Hilton is talented, and Spurs will win the league this season, I'd probably believe him!
Uli You're back! Keep it up... I got a lump with that too. I'm trying to find the right moment to watch BBM all the way through. I reckon some time over the Christmas hols - I don't want to just watch a few scenes, I want to watch the lot but it's got to be the right time.
That is funny about the saddle - hopefully experiencing the ageing for BBM has shown Jake that us slightly older ones have a lot of go in us yet - remembering the interview from the other day about older women :D
And yes - I don’t feel like I need to affirm anything to anyone. - Good for you, Jake.
I still don't like Proof... :(
Watching Zodiac (with a cheese sandwich and a glass of CA red) - I like that one :)
Paulh - I love this (as I sit and watch Jake excel as Robert) The guy who was in a tent with Heath ledger is the same guy who talked to Frank the Rabbit, and did the Santa Dance, and introduced Paul Avery to the Aqua Velva. Is it possible to be any more gifted? And this is why I feel so frustrated that Zodiac wasn't given the respect it deserved by the very studio that made it. It's an extraordinary and exceptional film. However much I love Jake (which is a bit I admit ;)), I woudn't have seen Zodiac as many times as I have if it didn't have even more to it than Jake's incredible performance. A lot of that is due to Fincher. I could go on about Zodiac all night so I'd better shut up!
Hi TL! I've noticed this a few times since doing this site that quite often Jake says the same thing and it makes me thing that an interview is an old one. But they are often totally different interviews, Jake has his phrases and he'll reuse them - often to deflect the dull and repetitive question. But reading around these stock phrases, there are all kind of riches.
Let's face it, if Jake told me the Earth was flat, Paris Hilton is talented, and Spurs will win the league this season, I'd probably believe him! - I think that goes for me too... are you getting at Spurs again perchance? ;)
WDW , I am also waiting for the right moment to watch BBM again! I think I will find/ take the time around Xmas...
LOL at your logic how to choose a movie for tonight! MM came up - so you are watching Zodiac...
Enjoy! ;)
Hey Uli - a Christmassy evening with chocs and liquor - that may get us through a full Brokeback viewing. I just can't escape the pull of Zodiac tonight - and there's Jake as Robert wearing those very Ennisy shirts.
Sorry about the Spurs thing, WDW. I don't MEAN to pick on them, it just comes naturally;)
It's funny what you say about Jake in the Ennis shirts. I remember drooling when I first saw the stills, before the film came out, but watching the film I don't find Jake as Robert Graysmith at all fanciable. He deserves an Oscar just for that! Zodiac is a brilliant film though, I just don't watch it very often cos a)it's so long and b)I'm a wimp!
I think I might watch TGG tonight. It's a bit like BBM, I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it, but I've had a crappy day today so it can't make me feel much worse;)
Hey TL - you can get at Spurs all you like - I'm giving up football for a new years resolution after the fiasco of Euro 08. Cricket for me...
That's quite true actually, I don't fancy Robert as I fancy Douglas (and I certainly do fancy Douglas) but the film is just so superb. I tink you should grit your teeth and watch it. Enjoy TGG :D Sorry you've had a crappy day, me too. Jake to the rescue, I hope.
I tink you should grit your teeth and watch it.
My crappy day started with a visit to the dentist which I've still not recovered from, so thanks for rubbing it in!;) I'm not sure I can face TGG after all, it messes with my head so much. After reading the post tonight I'm thinking of edited highlights of BBM;)
Oh no TL I'm sorry about that :( Take it easy and wallow in Jakeness. The edited BBM highlights sounds very suitable. I have to be in a very particular frame of mind for TGG.
Hey WDW! It's ok, don't worry about it:) The pain's not too bad now, just don't make any jokes about losing the only bit of wisdom I had cos I've heard them all today! And yes, there's nothing like a good helping of SNIT to cure just about anything:)
Take care TL and enjoy SNIT - should be issued on the National Health :)
Lol WDW! I would vote for any party that promised to give away Jake DVDs on the NHS! Maybe they can also have a word with New Line or whoever and get Rendition out quicker;)
Enjoy Zodiac! speak to you tomorrow:)
A Jake dispensary... G'night TL - speak to you tomorrow. I'll be off shortly as a long journey into work tomorrow :(
..."I did the DVD case thing and it came up MM so I'm watching Zodiac :D
*LOL* If that's what works for you, go with it.
..."Re: neely I like what you said about the "I always liked you" scene in Proof! I never saw it that way, but it sure makes sense to me!
Thanks, Uli. I think of Hal as her lifeline, who can help pull her back to her real self, the person she was at 22.
Morning everyone form a very cold and frosty London :) Watching Zodiac late at night with a couple of whiskeys is highly recommended.
Thanks for the comment Neely - Good to see a bit of Proof love going on - not too much, but a little :D Have a good day - wonder how things are going in Santa Fe...
Will pop back in later! I have an early moring appointment with a periodontist on this, my day off! I had so many plans to catch up on personal, Holiday things....oh well.... I felt sorry for Harold...Harold Dobbs...I will savor all the great interviews when I return...to lessen the pain and distract me. Jake has that effect.
Hi everyone, brrrr cold. NYC's supposed to get 10 inches of snow today. SASS keep us posted. LOve this post. BBM is possibly my most fav movie of all. Can't help but think Jake's having some fun over there, I feel it in my bones...love that man. The pic of him giving a handshake to the music composer of BBM, love it! He seems so sincere. Have a greta day everyone.
Morning Bobbyanna and good luck :\ I felt sorry for Harold and even more sorry for Jake having to play Harold...
Morning CWG blimey, that's a lot of snow. You'll be back on the slopes this weekend then. Thaat handshaking pic is such a favourite of mine, makes me feel good looking at it.
Hi WDW and everyone this morning.
Fantastic post! I'm enjoying it so much. Back soon...off to docs in a few. Yes CWT, snow is to come mid-mirning...not so much to the city, as well the Golden Globes are being announced in about 8 minutes at 0830 EST.
love to ya,
sass
six thirty a.m. in Santa Fe sixteen degrees F but clear and in the forties, today.
Nor'easter coming this way this afternoon, in Western MA -
Have a safe day, y'all
Zodiac didn't receive any Golden Globe nominations! :(
A bit late, but I just listened to the Brad and Jake radio interview and it was wonderful. Brad sounds such a nice and interesting person, and he and Jake seemed to have a great affinity for each other. That was nice to hear. I also loved Brad's praise of Jake's performance in This is Our Youth. They both seemed very relaxed and the interview was long and interesting. Thanks WDW, for giving us such a great treat.
Blimey weather, I'll be skiing for sure WDW. Here comes the snow now.
No GG nominations? These people are crazy, what a bummer :(

Hi everyone - hard to believe, I know, but I actually have got home :\ I'm tempted to go and picket outside the Golden Globes office but instead I'll warm myself up with a glass of wine.
Hi Sass, Pia and CWG! Thanks for the updates and the Santa Fe weather.
I know Anon - it's rubbish :(
I'm glad you enjoyed the MMile interview Christie - Jake does know ow to pick his directors.
