Zodiac impresses and Jake keeps cool

I was very pleased to hear today that the excellent magazine Sight and Sound has placed Zodiac in its Top 10 films for the year, no mean achievement indeed. Here is the full list: 1. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu); 2 Inland Empire (David Lynch); 3 Zodiac (David Fincher); = 4 I’m Not There (Todd Haynes) & The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck); 6 Silent Light (Carlos Reygadas); = 7 The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik) & Syndromes and a Century (Apichatpong Weerasethakul) & No Country for Old Men (Ethan and Joel Coen) & Eastern Promises (David Cronenberg).

MTV 2004

Thanks to I Heart Jake for posting more New Old pictures of Jake to help us get through this wintry drought. These pictures were taken at the MTV awards in 2004.

Jake and Salma dress up in Iqaluit

Fittingly for the time of year, IHJ also posted recently pictures from the Earth Day that Jake attended with Salma Hayek in Iqaluit, in the Canadian Arctic, back in the 'spring' of 2005. We heard recently from Jake himself how much he loves the snow, and you can read more about this adventure here in The Washington Post.

'So when the yellow all-terrain vehicle carrying Hollywood celebrities lumbered down the snowy hill onto Frobisher Bay's sea ice (you can't really do a red carpet here) Friday, the crowd of several hundred well-bundled Inuit were eager to see who was inside. "Is Brad Pitt there?" one shouted. But Hayek and Gyllenhaal (say: JILL-in-hall) emerged from the truck to riotous applause, apparently ready to brave sub-zero temperatures to make an artistic statement about how global warming is harming a traditional hunting and fishing culture that has thrived here for centuries.'

'That's where Hayek and Gyllenhaal, who pass all the litmus tests, come in. Hayek gave up her car for a year and a half in protest of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, then bought a Ford hybrid sport utility vehicle. Gyllenhaal, 24, starred in the environmental-apocalyptic "Day After Tomorrow." While they dressed down for the occasion -- Hayek sported a long underwear-like slate-colored hoodie and gray wide-legged pants, and Gyllenhaal weathered the cold in jeans and a blue button-down shirt -- they radiated a serious level of glamour compared with the earnest environmentalists surrounding them. Sans posse, the two stars exuded a sense of playfulness throughout the weekend, breaking into song at points (Inuit throat-singing and Spanish-language Christmas carols). The Frobisher Inn's suites were booked, so each star stayed in a modest single room. And at one point, when it looked like the event's organizers couldn't secure a private jet, Hayek offered to fly coach and stay overnight in Ottawa in order to make it. (Her handler also told organizers that schlepping to the Arctic meant Hayek turned down a chance to be a judge at the Cannes Film Festival, a post that apparently includes a $100,000 gift bag as compensation.)' [Now that's what I call compensation...]

'The environmentalists found another plane provider -- the stars arrived on a Millionaire Airlines Learjet -- and Hayek and Gyllenhaal did a full tour of Inuit country. The actress, who shares a manager with Gyllenhaal, called to invite him a day before the plane took off: At first, he recalled, "I was like, what?" but he quickly concluded, "You don't pass that up."'

'"This is, unfortunately, an opportunity for the world to see the face of global warming," Gyllenhaal said during an interview over dinner after an afternoon dogsledding on the sea ice. "In helping these people, we help the world."... Gyllenhaal said he welcomed a chance "to be inside the culture" of the Arctic, "which is full of darkness and full of perversity, too. . . . I'm interested in a people who have a lot of pain underneath but still offer hope."'

I did a brief feature on this event and the cause some months ago, but I don't think it would hurt to relink to this video, which gives some idea of how Jake looks all bundled up against the cold.

Newsmax has another quote from Jake from that day, and it contains a classic example of Gyllenspeak: '"Global warming is an abstract concept to most people; we know it's happening, but we can't really visualize its effect," Gyllenhaal told the press. "Unfortunately, the Inuit people put a human face on global warming, they are literally melting away. They are the canary in the coal mine."'

Brothers in Las Vegas, NM

Filming continues apace on Brothers, with some shooting at least going on in Las Vegas, New Mexico. A resident reported on IMDb that 'Roughly 30 minutes ago, I think they were filming in front of the Spic 'n' Span because cops had the whole block barricaded. Pretty exciting. You wouldn't think such big names would hit little ol' Vegas.'

The cast now includes Mare Winningham, who has been spotted shopping in Santa Fe for boots - vital at this time of the year, I would have thought. 'Multiple Emmy-award and Oscar winner (Best Supporting Actress for Georgia) Mare Winningham) and producer Zach Schiff-Abrams stopped by Back At The Ranch last week to check out the boots. The two visited the store at separate times, but both are in town working on Brothers with Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman. According to IMDB, Winningham also worked on the recently completed Kevin Costner film, Swing Vote. She's the mother of five and even went to high school in Los Angeles with Pecos-area resident Val Kilmer. Small world.'

Includes pictures from IHJ.

Hi WDW..thanks for keeping us posted on all the Brothers info. The more I read about it..the more I want to see it. As far as Zodiac goes..it is definitely in my top ten. I am surprised it has not gotten the recognition it deserves from the awards folks...but perhaps come oscar time, they will see some reason. Love this site so much...thanks for your tireless work and dedication...hugs..Michele

Hey WDW! Very timely wintery post tonight! Sounds like Jake had a great time in the Arctic, singing Xmas songs in Spanish *swoon* I saw a documentary a while ago about the Inuit and how global warming is affecting their lives and it was fascinating but also very sad:( I love that Jake seems so interested in finding out about different cultures and different parts of the world, as he alluded to in a lot of the Rendition interviews when he talked about Morocco. Loved the girl at the end of the video saying he was "totally worth freezing my ass off for" Lol:D Btw, I spent the best part of 45 minutes this morning freezing MY ass off at the bus stop, any chance of Jake flying over to see me;)Preferably in jeans and blue button down shirt*drool*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey good to see you Michele! Thanks so much for that. I'm enjoying following Brothers being filmed, not much was coming out during Rendition's filming. Thanks for the hug *) It's a bit of a Heath day here today, I'm watching The Knight's Tale on TV, and I bought the I'm Not There soundtrack today as well as Heath's Empire magazine! I'm looking forward to having Jake back on the mags again and a film in the theatres :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL - I'm in a wintry mood today too - although The Knight's Tale is warming me up as is the miniature bottle of Laphroig I was given today. I like the sound of Jake and Salma being so relaxed on their trip 'sans posse'. It must have been such a different world for an LA lad! I liked that bit at the end of the video and I can empathise having had two near miss pneumonia experiences for Jake, plus chicken pox!

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! If you're going to freeze your ass off, it may as well be for Jake;) I forgot all about A Knight's Tale:( I can't watch a film if I've missed the start so I've just got it on with the sound down so I can admire Heath looking hot in a suit of armour while I wait for MOTD to start:D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

MOTD?? You're talking code again TL - what on earth is that? :D The problem is that when I see Heath in anything I want to turn it off and put BBM on - it's a real medical condition of mine...

twistedlogic said...

MOTD=Match Of The Day :) My Gunner boys beat Chelski today!:D

It's funny about Heath, I like seeing him in other things cos it's the only way I can appreciate his hotness cos it's totally overshadowed by Jake's hotness in BBM;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ahhhh ;) footie. Yes but I see the hotness in The Knight's Tale and I want Heath to be Ennis looking at Jack.

twistedlogic said...

I see what you mean, but I don't get that at all. Must be a medical condition, like you say;) Still, any excuse to watch BBM :)

From where does the last photo come WDW, its beautiful, Ive never seen it before.

Wonder what is paid Catholic and Protestant churches, alo golf course, in Los Alamos for site use. Also "residence" in Baracca Mesa, which, I recall, is upscale residential district. A wonderful federal style house where my family lived for year in Gr Village was later used as a site in Redford's Quiz Show. They changed the house quite a bit - it was startling to see these changes which I figured must have cost a boodle.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Definitely - Have a good night TL :D

Hi Positively Pia - to be honest I have know idea where that pic came from other than it being from, I believe, a magazine photoshoot. I just found it, misfiled, on my PC tonight. It's absolutely gorgeous, isn't it.

I watched Spielberg's Empire of the Sun filmed years ago and it was amazing what they did to change the atmosphere of the area, even making it seem like it was on another continent. And, of course, watching what they did for the Ryan Philippe move, where they blew out the windows of a bar. I suppose the cost is peanuts to them.

Anonymous said...

Thanks WDW! He is just priceless! Bless his heart!!! Gyllenbabbling for days! LOL!!! I also loved the quote about the darkness and perversity and pain of the Inuit people...I do love my Jakey!!!!
I don't remember Mare Winningham winning an Oscar for Georgia. I truly don't.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bobbyanna - I know it's weird, I had no idea Mare was so awarded either! G'night all *)

Anonymous said...

Mare nominated for A award, won for Independent Spirit for best supporting.

Anonymous said...

does anybody kno why there hasn't been any pics from the brothers set? you would think that with such a hot young cast that people would be all over the set.

Anonymous said...

LOL!!! That's the point. Maybe they don't want people all over the set. Another good reason to film in New Mexico, while Britney keeps the paps busy in LA!
BTW, the American Film Insitute (AFI) has released its top ten films of 2007. Apparently Knocked Up is a better film then Zodiac. As for Rendition...say what? I'm in a rotten frame of mind. I just wuz robbed of one of my days off bcz of a celebrity book signing! Don't ask...OK. It's Rachel Ray...definitely not a fan!Oh. And as a result of some informal, anecdotal "polling" at the local booksellers' it may interest you to find know Jake Gyllenhaal is fast becoming a household word. The vast numbers of people buying People definitely know who he is now! LOL!

what is that pic from of jake and that girl. his hand is on his mouth balled into a fist. hes wearing a white shirt. its the last picture.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :) Sigh, Monday, but Christmas lunch day for me :D

Hi Pia, thanks for the info on Mare.

Hi Anon - I imagine security is tight so it's not a surprise.

Morning Bobbyanna - how all these institutes can neglect Rendition so totally is beyond me. Hope you have a better day today :)

Hi Anon - as I mentioned earlier to Pia here, I have no idea where that picture's from unfortunately. I just found it in my PC at the weekend with work stuff!

Speak to you all later :D

Well, that's got the be the fifth time I've managed to fall asleep watching The Knight's Tale - and usually at about the same point - no idea why, and no idea why I don't just stick a tape on and watch it when I'm fully alert :( Not doing to well on the Heath watching this week, missed Candy, dozed off during TKT.

Does seem strange there doesn't appear to be one Brothers photograph as yet, ah well, I wait known fresh Jake is always worth the wait.

Great post WDW. So glad that Sight and Sound thinks Zodiac was a great film, as it was.

Loved the vid of Jake in the cold, he looked snug though.

I liked too the pics of Jake to go with the post, particularly the one of him in the stairway, and the one of him with (I think) Alison Lohan (don't think that surname is right, so apologies if not, just cant think of the right one). I think this was part of a photo shoot they did for Teen Vogue. But then again, I could be completely wrong.

I missed Heath in AKT last night but I do like the film, mostly for Heath dancing, that is just the most fabulously fun scene. Heath is a very very sexy dancer.

Haha...i trust "Sight & Sound" any day over the Oscar nomindations :) It's like golden stamp of excellence to get into Top 3 in S&S's year end vote. It's great news.

oh... i watched "A Knight's Tale" too last night! those blond curls of Ennis... ops, i mean Heath :)

Those layers and layers of clothes on Jake still can't keep him being... errmm... sexy in the snow? lol.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hello friends :) Trying to let the Christmas lunch settle...

Agent K - Bad luck! I understand that MMile is on tonight - are you going to stay awake through that? Let us know how you get on ;)

Hi Christie - Thanks for the info about the Mysterious Photo! The dancing scene in TKT is my favourite too without doubt. Unfortunately, I just keep hoping Jack Twist will pop up.

Hey Winterbird - it is good for Sight and Sound to give Zodiac the thumbs up - it's a magazine that knows what it's talking about. Those layers and layers of clothes on Jake still can't keep him being... errmm... sexy in the snow? - love that :P

Another great post, WDW! Always great to see Jake giving back and bringing awareness to Global Warming. Always love the videos and pics of Jake in the Arctic. Fits with the winter weather! Very cold but nice and sunny here. I will take that over the crappy icy rain we had yesterday. Hope things are going well in NM on the Brothers set. Mare Winningham is a very good actress and a nice addition to the cast.

WDW, have lots of fun at your Christmas party! I give you a ton of credit for your long commute every day. Man, I don't know if I could do it, lol.

Have a great day everyone!

And glad to see Zodiac getting some more attention! Good for S&S for having great taste. :)

G'day, lovelies!

Sight and Sound = Sanity IMHO.

Nine a.m. in Los Alamos, thirty degrees F. and clear. Film crew will be in santuary of United Church today and tomorrow - will
"Pastor Don" preside, I wonder?

Should I stop wondering about whut's goin' on with Brothers? More director's cuts I see, less naive do I become: I guess they could white out the canyons and mountains and pretend Los Alamos is Beverly Hills. It's an up-scale community, mostly "white", expensive boutiques on the main street. I was offended by the prices as well as the Atomic Bomb Museum.

Beginning to figure out my own romantic experiences in N.M. have little to do with the present realities of filming for the Brothers crew. Still, it's fun to put together Jake and my own memories.

My bear's wearing his Santa Hat. Moscow Ballet is doing Nutcracker tonight in Amherst tonight with lots of local kids in the cast, great music on local PBS station. yum yum Christmas time!

Hope everybody's ploughed out and safe and warm and sober. (remembering Christmas office parties in NYC - )

Anonymous said...

Oh, just caught up on your post, WDW. Sounds like you enjoyed your Christmas lunch! :)

Pia, yes I too have had some wild office holiday parties here in NYC. Hehe ;p Thanks for the updates on NM. I love your vivid imagination. Your Santa hat bear sounds so adorable! Any chance of pics? Enjoy the Nutcracker.

hi, get real. remember being on an alcoholic crying jag on the subway going home from an office party, a little white haired woman hanging on subway strap above me cooing in a lovely bro\gue, "it'll be alright in the morning, dearie. . . "

any, I hope WDW will let Hot Teddy come to J's b-day bash. He's got his outfit ready.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

HI everyone - made it home at last - only a 5 and a half hour commute today :(

Hi Get Real and Pia - my Christmas lunch was ... interesting - I was the only one drinking and I came home starving hungry!

Pia Thanks for the Santa Fe update :D And Thanks for Hot Teddy! He's definitely invited to Jake's Birthday Bash, he can hand out the cake and nibbles :)

Anonymous said...

OMG, (((WDW)))....five and a half hours! :( Well, sounds like you were the only one with some holiday spirit at the party. ;) Hope you rest up and have a nice warm, comforting dinner.

Aww, Pia, was nice of that lady to comfort you on the subway.

^^ Sorry, that was me just above.

put on yr bunny slippers WDW - too long a drive! -

What are people bringing for the party? Im preparing shopping list for tomorrow. We have at our local cheese store great lil chocolate pies, also brie made by some woman who lives in a hut in the woods in Vermont, calls herself Lazy Lady, makes great cheese. also for appetizers coquille (aka scallops) st. JACQUES! what are y'all drinking? where's Anouska she gives great parties.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Get Real - I'm relaxing with a glass of red while doing a new post :D

And thank you too Pia - I went on the bus and train today as I thought I was going to be drinking - I'll make up for it now...

Obviously, I can bring some booze - I have red wine, Jamieson and Stella, and I could rustle up a Bloody Mary. So if someone could bring the nibbles... Ruby's Mr Ruby is a great cook - we could ask him nicely to bake the cake.

Jake likes his puddings I think so we may want to get in some icecream and chocolate chip mint cookies.

How about a chocolate fondue?

Anonymous said...

OMG chocolate fondue! I feel an orgy comin' on. :) :)

Christie said...

How about some aqua velva, with those nice cocktail umbrellas as this is a very special occasion? Nibbles, puddings and cake are a must at all parties, will there just be one big candle or 27 small ones?

I can bring the chocolate fondue if you like? What do we have to dip in it though? strawberries? grapes?

What was the name of the whiskey Jack was sharing with Ennis their last night together? Or maybe not - too much of that and I might get depressed. Nothing like a melancholy girl in the kitchen who has too much to drink.

I love that Jake and Salma did this and that Jake when asked to come along felt it was so important he couldn't pass up going. He always, always says the right thing. This is one of the places on Earth where you just cannot miss what is happening. Movie stars and other such people really have the power to draw attention to important things such as this. :)

twistedlogic said...

(((WDW))) Five hours!Damn:( Hope you've had something to eat and are relaxing now:)

Hey guys! This party sounds like fun, do I get an invite? I can't cook worth a damn (and I can never get the hang of can openers either!) but I could provide the Starburst;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Christie - I think we need 27 candles, which means a big cake so we should all get some. Strawberries is good.

We could play the BBM whiskey game I'm so fond of :D

Thanks so much for commenting Marina - this is such an incongruous setting for movie stars - a world away from their (and our) comfort zone but they can really do some good there. I imagine it was a great experience though.

Hey TL You're invited even though you can't cook. Bring the starbursts and keep the wine flowing :)

Please feel free to take this conversation to the next thread as I'm loving it!

I love Jake's comment about the canary in the coal mine.

According to The Oinon, the state bird of West Virginia is the dead canary. ;-)

Fantastic post WDW,
I just enjoyed the Jake/Salma Video. The plight of those people should have had Bush on the alert and ready to embrace environmental changes years ago. NOT!
I cracked up listening to what the two girls said at the end, that it was totally worth it to freeze their butts off...Jake being the worth it person I'm sure:)

I meant to post yesterday so I'm glad you left this open. I read the list of AFI nominees and had to lie down. KNOCKED UP! What's up with AFI. Thank goodness for Sight and Sound.

Zodiac is making top ten lists around the country, but so far no nominations. It seems this is the Coen brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson's year, Both men are directors I like, but neither worked with the Gyllengod this year.
Zodiac is one film that should have been nominated by now. The studio made this mess--released early 2007 and all the rest of their FUBAR's, and they couldn't clean it up in time for award season.

Perhaps when the director's cut DVD, comes out in January, a few nominations might happen.

Oscar ballots are mailed December 26th 2007, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed, for Zodiac, one of the best movies of 2007, to receive some nominations from AMPAS.

paulh said...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, too, Sass, but iot's hqsard to type thzat wathuy ^%%$$# :-(

Jake loves the snow, but he lives where there's very little of it. That's why he should have a little place around here, where we get a bleeping lot of it! Two feet in four days last week. More coming tomorrow and Thursday. :-(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paulh - a state has a dead canary as its bird? Creepy... Although I suppose I can see why. What a lot of snow - too much snow - even for LA Snow Lover Jake ;)

Hi Sass - glad you liked the post :D I wish Zodiac were getting some nominations and I wish Rendition would too - sigh.
