Brothers appears on the horizon for December 2008

Well, we said it couldn't be true - and we were right! What am I talking about? IMDb has shifted the release date of Brothers forward a year to 4 December 2008, which means we will (at least in the US) see Jake Gyllenhaal on the big screen in 2008 after all and, not only that, it opens up all sorts of opportunities for publicity and screenings during the film festival season this Autumn. I'm not surprised by the change in date at IMDb - after all, this is a film presumably without spaceships, vast crowd scenes, superheroes, or many other CGI delights - but it is good to see the shift from 2009 to 2008. It also gives me an opportunity to repost these tantalising tasters of Brother Jake.

Zodiac screening and Q&A with James Vanderbilt

The other good news - again if you're in the US and specifically in Jake's neck of the woods (Beverly Hills) - Paramount Studios continue to try to make amends for their earlier Zodiac disdain. This time the studio is hosting a free screening of Zodiac at the Writers Guild Theater (135 South Doheny Drive, Beverly Hills) on 19 January at 7.30pm. The screening is followed by a Q&A with the film's writer and DVD commentator James Vanderbilt. I really enjoy James' voice and accent on the commentary. More details here.

Talking of James Vanderbilt, here is an interview that James did with the WGA in which he talks about Zodiac. I love James' concept of what being a writer is all about: 'I honestly think part of being a writer is that you deal in dark shit so you don't bring it out in your real life. I'm a pretty happy-go-lucky guy because I can deal with dark shit and get it out on the page and not have it follow me home.'

Farragut... again

Meanwhile, on the Jake front, another site made mention of the infamous Farragut North production. I think we may spend much of this year wondering whether Jake is to take to the Broadway stage during 2008's electoral fall or not. Clearly, it's an idea that does arouse interest and I don't think we should rule it out at this stage. Politico has this to say:

'Just read the screenplay for “Farragut North,” a project ostensibly based on the 2004 Howard Dean campaign that has George Clooney attached as a director and possible actor along with Leonardo DiCaprio. There’s no “Yee-hah!!” Dean scream and, in fact, the candidate himself (named Gov. Jim Morris here) barely appears in the story line, which concerns dirty backroom tricks, robocalls, direct mailings, ad buys, get-out-the-vote drives and snagging the support of black leaders before the Iowa caucus — all too familiar for anyone following the 2008 race. The film probably won’t start shooting until later this year and may even hit Broadway first, with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. Joe Trippi, are you ready for your close-up?'

And finally...

Ang Lee continues his publicity rounds for Lust, Caution, a film that is still blazing a trail, albeit in all too few theatres. Here, Ang reflects on the extra lives that each of his films has given him or unleashed from within him. It's good to hear Ang talk about the experience of filming Brokeback Mountain.

The paper says: 'After diving deep into heavy territory with Crouching Tiger and the much-derided Hulk with Eric Bana, Lee used Brokeback to "recover from the past two movies". "It was very relaxed," he says. "Perhaps that's the best state of making a movie. That movie was very simple, honest, and I did my best effort as usual, but I was very relaxed... Lust, Caution, I went deep again... I don't know if I should still keep pushing the envelope or do something like Brokeback, you know, take it like a breeze. Sometimes I think the material demands me -- we're the slaves to filmmaking, not the masters. Brokeback had so much love in it, it just required me to be in such a state, so maybe that's why I did that at that time."'

Pass the dunce's cap! I only had the comments page open from the previous post, I wasn't expecting a new post this early! Anyway, great news, can't wait:D "Brother Jake" makes me think of a priest though!

This Farragut North stuff won't go away, will it? selfishly, I'd prefer Jake to do the film rather than the play, cos there's no way I'd be able to get to see him on Broadway, but there's always a chance he'll get the stage bug and come back to the west End;)

I love Ang Lee's comments abouut BBM....*sigh*

Hi TL - I know I posted early tonight just to throw you :) Seriously, it was such great news I didn't want to wait.

Farragut won't go away that's for sure. I'm not quite sure what I think about it. I need to know before I make up my mind. The West End wuld be so cool, wouldn't it?

I loved Ang's words - I wonder if Jake and Heath remember the filming being as relaxing as Ang recalls :D

Hi WDW and TL! Yes,I'm actually reading/commenting on a post just after it's gone up! Sorry you've had a bad day,WDW - here's to a really good weekend for us all!

I loved the "Access Hollywood" interview in the previous post,as you said I would WDW, a thoughtful interview, by a smitten interviewer(and who can blame him?!)and some considered and/or funny, quirky answers from a devastatingly-handsome-despite-the-beard J.Gyllenhaal Esquire.

Allow me to do a virtual back-flip of delight that we "only" have to wait until December this year to see the release of "Brothers". We'll be more than ready for the fix of another Jake-film by then. Delaying the release until Dec 2009 would have been corporate cruelty on a grand scale!

Like you TL,(well I am a fellow "shallow,slash-obsessed freak"!)I enjoyed the return of "Torchwood",although the "Buffy" guy was new to me,it's the intoxicating Mr.Barrowman who sets my pulse racing.

For me,also like you and many others, there will NEVER be a film that even comes close to "Brokeback Mountain" and I felt a similarly warm and wistful glow reading Ang's fond recollections of the whole "Brokeback" experience. Truly magical, utterly bloody heart-breaking...

Hey Nadine - thanks! I hope you have a good weekend too. Wasn't that a great interview? And Jake was so handsome and thoughtful in it - again he responded in kind to a well-smitten interviewer :D

Here it is, January 2008 and I'm already looking forward to the end of the year. And awards goodies :)

hullo y'all trying to recover a day that sorta fell into shambles. therefore! good news about Brothers! "Once" was filmed in seventeen days. just sayin'

Farragit North. This USAan has had it with politics, at the moment. Let's do the moon pic.

Recalling Ang's words about J and H in alll of their youthful innocense - must have been a delight to work with them, Diane and Larry and that great story of Annie P.

All I have to say is YAY! (again and again ) that Brothers is going to be out at the end of this year.

I will have to keep my eyes and ears open for Farragut North. Cause if Jake is going to be on Broadway I am going back to NY to see it.

And it's great to see Ang still talking about Brokeback after 4 years (since it was filmed)

Having all sorts of PC issues this evening :(

Hey Pia! Really good news about Brothers :D

Fortunately, over here we're spared all but the 'good' bits of the US election and electioneers :) I am interested in it though - far ethan UK politics.

Hi Trekfan - I knew you'd be happy about this :D If Farragut does come off then a trip to NY is definitely in order.

A propos of Lee's comments... I am sure you know the movies "Three Colours: Red" (and "Blue", and "White"). The director, Krzysztof Kieslowski, said after this trilogy (and before his death in 1996) that he sees only one direction not yet completely explored by the cinema: the bedroom. He said he preferred not to go there. I wonder which other directors beside Lee took this clue.

Thanks WDW!! That's great news about Brothers!! Didn't we all think it's improbable that it was Dec 2009??? :P

if the release date is Dec... then it might have a good chance of premiere in London Film Festival (late Oct/early Nov), it's a Jim Sheridan film after all... maybe I need to pay the damn £35 to join BFI after all :)

I kind of hope that Jake will do the Broadway show, to be honest. I think being in the Broadway crowd might allow him to take a step back at all the hollywood stuff that's going around... a play is all about acting for an actor. Didn't Jake once say that he prefers to do a couple of movies, then a play, then back to movie??

If that happens, it will give me the best excuse to go NY... :)

Morning everyone :D Hope you all had a good night and have a good pair of wellies to cope with all the rain.

Hi Anon - thanks for the comment. I'm not familiar with that trilogy. Maybe the only way to competely understand or represent the evolution of a relationship is to follow it into the bedroom, where Ang's clearly gone here. I am amazed, thinking about it, how different all of Ang's films are from each other and I can see why he thinks of them as each coming from a different element of his nature.

Morning Winterbird! And we were right! Yep, it opens up all sorts of possibilities for the end of the year, which means there are months ahead of wishing and dreaming. The British Film Festival - could we be that lucky? But wherever it shows it will be seen in 2008. Might been accruing some more airmiles though. and if Farragut goes ahead all the more reason for a NY road trip :D

Have a good Saturday everyone :D

G'morning, y'all. Anybody want to join me for for a morning run? (whoops. . lumchtime for some a you)

Hi Anouska *)

Hey Pia - (un)fortunately it's evening here now and dark and wet so I'll be unable to join you - thanks for asking though ;)

PIA, they probably can't do the moon film until the writers' strike ends, and no one knows when that will be. At least the Farragut North play is all finished.....

All I know about Farragut North is that it's a subway station that's a few blocks north of the White House. It's not a particularly appealing place, though it at least is new enough that it's not *totally* depressing yet. ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Can't sleep... :\

hey Paulh - I read somewhere I think that the Moon Project was further advanced than that, with a script ready to go and due to start shooting straight after Brothers. The Joe Namath project, however, is awaiting a script.

Why do you think they wnat to release "Brothers" so late in the year ? Will it qualify for Oscars 2009 ? Yeah, I hope the movie will be that good, or at least Jake's performance (about this I'm sure !).
I'm one of those who are very sorry Jake didn't do Broadway - that play sounded really good, the time was right (election year), and do I have to say how good M. Nichols is and what an amazing show it could have been ?! I'm still hoping....

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Ramona! I suppose studios and distributors have to slot in their year's movies and this date would release Brothers almost exactly a year after filming began, which seems unsurprising. The date will also mean it fits in well with the 'silly' season, the awards.

The play could still happen, I'm sure, so keep your fingers crossed. Thanks for commenting :D
