Jake Gyllenhaal IS Mr Right

A British newspaper, the Daily Mail, has today held up Jake Gyllenhaal as the ideal Mr Right against whom other men must measure up (although, according to the paper, Jake was slightly let down by the facial fur). Fair enough, I thought, here's an article I'm not going to argue with. 'With blue eyes, short dark brown hair and a medium build the ideal candidate looks like film-star Jake Gyllenhaal.' Here is the criteria against which men are judged, among whom Jake stands out above the rest.

'1. 5'11'' tall
2. Good looking
3. 12.5 stone
4. Earns more than £30,000
5. Blue eyes
6. Dark brown short hair
7. Medium build
8. Has a BA Degree
9. Never been married
10. No children
11. Three previous serious relationships
12. Clean shaven
13. Drives silver Mercedes
14. Enjoys the cinema
15. Likes eating out
16. Has had less than six sexual partners
17. Owns a £300,000 home
18. Doesn't smoke
19. Dislikes football
20. Likes pets'

Of course, Jake doesn't fulfil all of these, but one thing's for sure, Jake does like eating out and I'm pretty certain he enjoys the cinema. Despite the alleged animosity towards the facial scruff, the article reveals that voters can be fickle: 'Facial hair proved to be surprisingly popular, with 28 per cent of those surveyed admitting they liked a goatee beard and 21 per cent saying they would like to meet a man with a moustache.' It does sound, though, that Jake's Mercedes is the wrong colour - but I'd let that go.

And Jake definitely approves of pets.

So all things considered, and after weighing up the pluses and the minuses, Jake, you'll do.

Zodiac - one of the best American films of the decade so far

John Farr of the Huffington Post has listed his top American films of the decade to date and it's great to see Zodiac at No 8: 'After a series of grisly murders shocks San Francisco residents in the 1970s, editorial cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) meets investigator David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and crime reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey, Jr.), who are each trying to decipher the cryptic clues and letters the killer called "Zodiac" has left to taunt authorities. As time passes, and seemingly important leads turn up nothing but more questions, the case exacts a heavy toll on the three men, but it's Graysmith who won't give up. In this brooding police procedural, David Fincher ("Seven") revisits a real-life case that Bay Area investigators puzzled over for years. Adapted from two books written by Graysmith, this riveting film centers around the experience of an obsessive illustrator who sacrifices work and a lot more to discover the killer's identity. Gyllenhaal's fine turn as the guileless, curious Graysmith is enhanced by Downey's own as a jaded beat reporter. Ruffalo's rugged cop, who discourages Graysmith from traveling too far down the rabbit hole, completes an effective three-way dynamic. Stylish, unnerving, and complex, "Zodiac" is a first-class detective tale with an epic sprawl.'

There are some interesting films on this list, incidentally, several of which completely puzzled and bemused me whilst also mesmerising, notably Mulholland Drive and Insomnia. I loved Best in Show but best film of the decade so far? For me, that would be the result of an untidy showdown between Zodiac and Brokeback Mountain.

Like other critics, Farr is impressed by the ensemble of Jake, Robert and Mark as leads. All three are superb but, also, each brings out the best of talent in the other two. Without doubt (although the cellar scene is the exception that proves the rule), my favourite scenes in the film are those that Jake shares with Robert Downey Jr (in boats and bars) and with Mark Ruffalo (in theatres and diners). As the youngest of the three, Jake arguably had the most to take from the experience. Mark said of working with Jake: 'He was good. I’ve known Jake for a long time, and it was good to work with him. It was fun to see him really kind of stretch his wings with somebody like Dave Fincher. They were tough scenes, and they took a lot of building, but I’m happy the way they ended up. It’s a good performance, and I think it’s one of his best. As much as he talks about being put through the wringers, it paid off for him.'

Interesting post! "tell me something I don't know, Daily Mail"... of course Jake wins hands down.

I find it funny that "have 3 previous serious relationships" as a criteria... if this coupled with "never married", then to me, that's a sign of a man "cannot close the deal" for whatever reason! :P

You're right that John Farr guy has some strange choices on his list. I like "best in show", but film of the decade? I'd put it in like top 20 best comedies or something. I love "Mysterious Skin" and "Mulholland Drive" too though.

Anyway, it's good that Zodiac is getting attention... when will they announce the damn Oscars nominations again?

Hey Winterbird! Yet again, the Daily Snail gets there in the end... I know it's interesting that about serious relationships because especially if the guy is a young guy surely three 'serious' romances is rather a lot?!

I did like Mulholland Drive and in a spooky way I rather liked Insomnia but they woudn't be on my list. Admittedly, my list may be a little Jake heavy... ;)

I believe the Oscar nominations are announced on 22 January - sigh... not too hopeful...

Daily Mail gets something right...shock horror!! I remember someone saying to me recently that you know you're getting old when you start to agree with the Daily Mail! This must be a one-off;) Good call though:)

Is there a critic on the planet now who doesn't love Zodiac? Where were all these Johnny come latelys back in March? Great to see it getting more praise, but the film of the decade,in fact the film of the century, no actually, make that the film of the entire history of filmmaking is Brokeback Mountain. End of:)

some lovely pictures, thank you, WDW, Im in a Jake lovin' mood, it must be the month, I have a tendency to get married in January.

I sure have never seen a guy that has meet my own Mr Right standards, which includes beautifal biceps, body build, playfulness, wit, sensuality, kindness, etc etc.

however, contra yourself, WDW, I dont wanna marry him, since I bet he's a handful and a half, I just wanna kiss him.

although if anything happened to him, I would kill myself. (also watching Piaf film, I am such a movie slut)

p.s. correction. I have never seen a guy OTHER THAN JAKE -

Hey TL - I know, I don't know what's up with the Mail. tehy'll be calling BBM a good film next... Good point - where were all these critics in March?

Hi Pia I'm in a Jake loving mood too (for a change, I don't think :D). A handful and a half of Jake I don't think I'd mind... Piaf?! Oh, let m know what that's like - I'm watching the first part of the new series of Torchwood right now.

I lov'd the piaf film, WDW, but it's gritty and someone this morning said her husband walked out on it. that may have been a compliment to the film, actually.

Not perfect - I wanted more - never enuff piaf! - mever enough Paris -

Thanks for the Torchwood reminder! I only wanted to see what all the fuss was about with Capt Jack and the bloke from Buffy (or whatever it was) and I managed to catch that bit just in time:D Nice...someone's been watching their BBM DVD, I think, a bit of ack of the head clutching going on there;D

p.s. one of the things that bothers me about biopices (piaf) is that there are allusions one is expected to either know or google or have access to the directors cut - hey, gimme the STORY! I love stories!

pardon the brief rant.

Hey Pia - I must admit that at the end of I'm Not There I was more confused than ever (not knowing much about Bob Dylan) but I think in a film about Edith Piaf I would need information.

TL mmm, that was a good bit :D Although never having seen Buffy, it all goes a bit over my head. But good to see Capt Jack again. I need some Jake now... Hmm, what to watch.

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! I've never seen Buffy either (or much of Torchwood for that matter), my reasons for wanting to watch tonight were totally gratuitous! I can't help it if I'm a shallow slash obsessed freak;D Watching the reunion kiss atm...sigh...

I think we're the same there TL :D But new pics of Jake so a new post!

twistedlogic said...

Yeah, except your mind is way quicker than mine - ignore the email I just sent you;) I can't see the new post though?

Well, you've got to let me post it first ;D

Very well done post. well of course Jake fits an ideal man. He doesn't have a megastar ego like alot of actors do and he seems to be very modest.

And as far as movies, I don't think you can compare BBM and Zodiac. it's like comparing Apples and Oranges.

My fave would always be BBM. I love Jack and Ennis. For me Jack Twist will always be my fave character that Jake brought to life

Morning Trekfan - Jake's my ideal man, that's for sure :D I agree Zodiac and BBM are totally different, which is good, as it means I don't have to decide which ofthe two I love the most :) Have a good day!

My list would be Jake heavy, too, with "Donnie Darko, "Brokeback Mountain,"
and "Zodiac" on it.

I always get to the end of a year without having seen many (or, in some cases,
*any*) foreign films. Then I get blindsided with critics' lists of "best films
of the year," some of which are 40 or 50 percent foreign. This is a quandary
because by December, most of the *best* films have left the theaters, or are
playing at a theater that'sd a thirty-minute walk from the nearest subway
station or parking lot. :-( I'd like to see "I'm not there" tomorrow, when I
have aday off, but by then it might not still be playing.

His tastes seem to run to blonds. Not that a bottle of blonde hair dye wouldn't
give the same effect, but some people (Liz Taylor and Delta Burke come to mind)
just have to have dark hair or they don't look right. In any event, I'm too old
to believe that happiness can be found with someone who's "ideal." Nobody is
ideal the way they came into the world, and trying to make someone into something
else is probably cruel and unnecessary. :-(

Hi Paulh - it can be awkward here in the UKL seeing some of the Best of movies too as some haven't even come out here yet! I was lucky to see I'm Not There - it came to an arthouse cinema near me, otherwise I just miss all but the biggest films. Proof and Jarhead didn't even show near me.

I agree that you can be setting yourself up for considerable heartache by creating an ideal against which everyone must come up short. But then, I also don't think it hurts to have a dream, which, by definition, isn't a reality but can bring huge pleasure. Realising it's a dream/ideal is the way never to be disappointed with the reality.

I've found that it's the quirks and the oddities, or the eccentricities, that are so enjoyable to love, more so than height and the colour of their mercedes (I actually like the colour of Jake's mercedes ;D)

Thunder storm out there - creepy :(

At lunchtime, I was in the staff room watching TV. There was a public service ad narrated by Reese Witherspoon. I told the other staff member who was in the room that Reese has cute children, and I'll eat my hat if they don't become actors. ;-)
