Jake - 'I liked the idea of being part of an international ensemble - it turned me on'

Today the winners of the Scripter Award were announced - Ethan and Joel Coen, and author Cormac McCarthy, won the screenwriting award for No Country For Old Men. This is of interest here because also in contention was the adaptation of Zodiac and the selection committe was led by the leading star's mother, Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal. The Scripters will be handed out on 2 February.

David Fincher's heroic push to publicise the Director's Cut of Zodiac continues, with very little support, it appears, from the studio, despite the sensational reviews for the DVD across the board. This time, David was interviewed by IGN and, again, he asks the interviewer what they thought of the DVD, who replies: 'Personally, I loved it. I think the documentaries were legitimately strong supplements and I really enjoyed the extended musical transition between time periods.'

Fincher replied: 'Oh, yeah. I really loved that. But when people start booing, you have to take that into consideration... You have ideas that you really love and you want other people to love them, but in the end, it's a group endeavor. There are ideas that you have about how scenes should play and actors just don't agree, and so they play it in a way they think they should and the meaning, for you at least, gets muddled. But in the end, you've asked them to go out and humiliate themselves playing dress-up. So they get to have a say in that. There are all kinds of compromises in movie-making, so when we screen the movie and everybody starts groaning, that's an honest response.'

'I always loved the pictures in American Cinematographer which were taken 18 feet to the left of the production camera… That there were all these people with fake snow machines and fake wind. I always thought people needed to see that – not to better appreciate, but to understand… I'd like the legacy of my DVDs to be about the people who really did the work talking about what their intent was. Because so often, the initial intent can be so obfuscated by the time you're done. Sometimes there may be the thing you set out to do and the thing that it actually is – and those two things may never be one and the same.'

'I'm pretty serious about everything. And to my own discomfort. I wish I didn't care. When I first started making videos, I liked the fact that the director's name wasn't on it. To me, that was very freeing. And then, all of a sudden, MTV starts putting your name there and you think, "Oh, shit. Now these f*@kin' things have to be good."'

And on whether Torso (to which Jake has been linked more than once) is next: 'First, let's get this damn strike over with. Give these guys their four cents. [Pause] Actually, there are a couple of possibilities. Hopefully, within hours, they'll call me and tell me that the deal is done so that I can begin working on another trilogy of Heavy Metal animated CG movies. I'm looking at Devil in the White City. I'm looking at this thing called The Killer. I'm also looking at making a satirical comedy about videogame developing with Sasha Cohen. That one is really interesting.'

We've had the Zodiac DVD release, the Rendition DVD is the next to come. So, after yesterday's look at the the red carpet for Brokeback Mountain in Hollywood, tonight is the turn of the Rendition red carpet at Toronto [the link will take you to a page of videos, this red carpet one is down the page]. The interview with Reese is one I've heard before, but the one with Jake is 'new'. Here, Jake says he was attracted to the role of Douglas Freeman because 'It was nice being part of an ensemble. I liked the idea of being part of an international ensemble - it turned me on at the time.' The video also features an interview with the Gorgeous Kelley Sane - need I say more?

And finally...

Aaaaaagh! I just commented on last night's post and simultaneously you put up tonight's offering,WDW,and I've gotta skidaddle now! Hubby is hungry for company....

With luck,I'll catch up again tomorrow! Might manage a short e-mail by phone tonight. Have a good night one and all!

Hey Nadine :D I just answered you over there - thank you *) Have a lovely evening - I'm in need of some serious relaxation after a very hard day. But tomorrow I have no commute :D Always love to hear from you so email if you can :)

Thank you for continuing the Zodiac goodies! I just got "Once" DVD today but I am still digesting Zodiac, so I'll leave the "Jake's choice" for the weekend :)

I do hope Jake will work with Fincher again, Torso or other project (how about that civil war idea? lol) i am even excited about that videogame project with Ali G (that would be fun...)

Every time I look at pictures with Jake and Fincher, I couldn't help thinking: Gee... Fincher IS tall, I mean Jake is 6ft already. Actually Gavin Hood is even taller, isn't he?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird :D Gavin is sooo tall! I couldn't believe how tall he was when I saw him, and he's not slight either, very big. David is also a big man, taller than Jake. Thanks to Zodiac, I am going to enjoy following the rest of David's career. I love the Civil War idea - I think we should write the script ;)

Hey, WDW, Im joining you in some Australian shiraz. No commute for me, but strenuous day. Supper in the oven. Smells good.

Nadine, thanks for heads up on yr post on yesterday's column! Yay gyllenhaal dimples! & IheartNadine!

Can't call up the Red Carpet video. will try again after supper

in the meantime, I'll talk about how Amazon lets you track your DVD, which is why their arrival is "scanned" at the P.O. which Ive wondered about. Z is "not yet delivered" which means Ive not had time to go to the P.O. Amazing how a "scanner" can notify sender when package is picked up. If this technology existed when Zodiac was about the case would have been solved. :) :) (joke)

I dunno about David Fincher, guys. He's a trip and a half. What was that early comment of Jake's, the difference between focus and obsession? Doesnt mean I dont think DF os brilliant. But being myself an "intuitive" type, I can see why Jake strained a bit at the bit. VERY eager to get to know DF better via Z DVD.

p.s. hey winterbird, Ive got once waiting at PO for the weekend also!

Hey WDW!

Thought I'd mention regarding Jake being linked to Torso.....it so happens recently on the website MTV Movies Blog, a few days ago they done an interview with David Fincher about Zodiac and about some of his future projects. In their interview, Fincher stated that Matt Damon may star in the lead as Eliot Ness in Torso. I then took the liberty to post in their comment that Wiki has stated that Jake was attached to Torso. The MTV interviewer himself responded to my comment and said that Fincher, when he asked him, he said there’s been no talk of Jake....

Hey Pia - I just can't wait for you to get your DVD :) I'm on the Californian Merlot and it's doing the job. The video takes a while to load but it does eventually. It has a view of the crowd that Smiles and Tpe might remember!

I do find David Fincher fascinating - his brain works in an incredible way, possibly a very different way from Jake's. But watching the DVD shows how the two tried to bridge that gap - with rages and laughs. But look at the movie it produced :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Jantoinette - we were posting at the same time! That's so great you got a commetn answered and very interesting to hear that David had never associated Jake with the Torso role. Shows how these rumours can fly around. The MTV interview was fascinating, it's on a post here a few days ago. I love all these interviews David is doing for Zodiac - he's pushing it while noone else seems to be bothered. You'd have thought the studio would have learned after the theatrical release but obviously not. Thanks for that! I never read comments on sites (except for here of course!!) and so I miss these things. I'm so pleased they asked David your question for you :D

I think it would be great if Jake worked with David again. They did speak of it during the Interview Mag session.

I wish that Zodiac got more fan fare.

And I liked the photo of Ramona and Peter :D

Now if only we had photos of Jake, Heath and Matilda :D (well maybe Jake and Heath. I am being hopeful during the TDK premiere.

Hi Trekfan! It'd be wonderful beyond words to see them all togeter at TDK premiere, what a great thought. And I certainly wouldn't complain if Jake worked with David again (although maybe Jake might:) ) have a good night :)

just for our amusement, from the Interview interview:

DF: So, now you're like "Im in a palce in my life right now where, in all seriousness, David, I might never have met you" (laughs: haha)
"Im feeling so good about myself that I would have instantly turned down that last script you sent me."

J: Shut up.

A little testy, guys, or so it seems to me. Not a marriage made in heave, in my view.

Anonymous said...

p.z. but as WDW said, look what came out of their relationship!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

And that tension Pia just fascinates me - the bad and the good together. And so productive obviously, albeit not easy on both sides. Definitely testy and definitely fruitful.

And the good news is I've just discovered that I'm Not There is playing at a local cinema this weekend :D At last I should be able to see the movie that goes with the soundtrack I bought and have been loving to bits.

Thanks for Peter and Ramona -- they are so cute.
I watched Peter recently in "K-19: The Widowmaker", he was very young in it. What a great character actor!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Anon :D I watched K19 not knowing Peter was in it - a very pleasant surprise and an excellent actor.

Anonymous said...

Pia, i am looking forward to watch "once" too :)

Heath looks gorgeous enough to eat in "I'm Not There"... and Michelle, i nearly couldn't recognise her in there... let's just say that she is "very un-Alma-like"..

not everything works for me in that movie, but I'd still highly recommend it, a special experience.

So heath did his biopic.. Jake's first one looks like to be Joe Namath.

I can't give you pictures of Jake, Heath and Matilda, but I saw a trailer for "The Dark Knight" when I went to see "I am legend" this evening. Heath is awesome as the Joker. Maggie appears briefly. I am wondering what the critics will think of her performance compared to Katie Holmes?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning all :) The rain out there... it's like TDAT all over again (without the wolves, and without Jake, and without actually being in NYC, but apart from that...)

Hi Winterbird - I have a bit of a dilemma. The cinema is also showing Lust, Caution and I don't think I can see both. So which should it be?!

Morning Paulh - ooh, great to see a trailer on the big screen. Heath's Joker must be overwhelming almost. And I'm looking forward to seeing Maggie in a film that's not so emotionally painful to watch!

Anonymous said...

WDW... yeah, every miserable in London today, it looks like it's 5pm already, maybe we should all go home! :P

Arggh.. "Lust, Caution" or "I'm Not There"... mmm... Ang or Heath... that's a difficult question.

If you're a Dylan fan, then surely you should go for "I'm Not There". But "watchability" wise, I'd go for "Lust, Caution".

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Winterbird - I'm very grateful I am at home today that's for sure. Hmmmm, well I'm not a Dylan fan, I just like the idea of Heath as Dylan, and I do like the soundtrack... But I've heard some amazing things about Lust, Caution. Have a day to make up my mind. Hope it's better weather in NM or LA today...

G'morning y'all! Its raining in western massachusetts with floodwatch, too - and Ive got to be out and about all day. at least all my beanie babies have paper umbrellas left over from NYEve. Although TDAT without Jake is not much fun.

Can't you do a double feature on a rainy day, WDW? Both films have come and gone in these parts. But Lust Caution will be out on DVD in Fef.

ZODIAC also got a WGA nomination for "Best Adapted Screenplay" yesterday - I am surprised that nobody here has mentioned this!

With a bit luck and some buzz it could get an Oscar nomination for screenplay as well.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Positively Pia -be careful out there - floodwatch is bad. I'm a sickie again, my bug came back so all wrapped up here (and Mr WDW is sick too, I believe in sharing..). Can't make up my mind about the films - it is coforting knowing they're both going to be on DVD soon.

That's great news Anon! I didn't hear that! And fingers crossed for some Oscar buzz... Thanks :D

Morning WDW,
Fantastic post! I Will try again to pull up the video.
Please keep warm. Mulled wine perhaps?

Broadway Joe Namath will be Jake's second biopic. His first biopic and his first lead role was Homer Hickam in October Sky.
October Sky

Paul, that trailer blew me away. I think I watched it at least 395703975 times before I saw it on the big screen and it still blew me away.

Maggie and Heath have fantastic chemistry. Maggie seems totally different from the previous actress... more dynamic more forceful...I can't wait.
back later to enjoy again.:)

Thank you for another interestting post WDW! And congrats to Zodiac for the WGA nomination!

I meant to say for a couple of days...you've given us some lovely videos...I watched them all even though I didn't comment...Thank you for those. I particularly loved the BBM premiere ones. They were so fantastic...just like being there indeed.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass! Good to see you - I feel better after a nap :D Good point about Homer, and even Graysmith to a point I suppose. I'm going to have to see some films just to see this trailer... Have a good day :D

Hey Rosie :) - Glad you liked the videos - I loved the BBM red carpets too, really did feel like being there, didn't it :D

kate I am very sorry to hear you are ill. I hope you feel better soon.

I saw the trailer for TDK a gazillion times. I love Heath as the joker and I can't wait for the movie to come out.

I wonder if Jake is back in NM filming Brothers?

WDW, why not see both movies on the same day; do all the times clash?

Sweet pic of Peter and Ramona*

Hurrah! It's Friday evening, my favourite time of the week and I've found time to catch up with last night's excellent offering,WDW! Thanks for the further insight into David Fincher, his approach to film-making is fascinating although we know how frustrating it can be for the "artistes" at times ! ;-)

Great to hear via "Anon" (such a popular name here ;-D ) that the WGA have given a nod to "Zodiac" in their nominations. Fingers crossed!

Loved the link to the TIFF site, because apart from the Rendition Red Carpet triumvirate of Jake,Kelly and Peter (thought his comment about Gavin's South African background was particularly apropos,as his brother-in-law would say :-) ), I also took a peek at the "I'm Not There" trailer and made a mental note to go back to watch the interview with the magical Mr. Metwally *)

THe INT trailer was a real appetiser, particularly the flashes of Kate Blanchett and Heath. There's a shot in the doorway where Heath as Bob bends down to scoop up/kiss the children and it reminded me so much of Ennis and his girls and, by extension,Heath with Matilda,my stomach turned over and there was a catch in my throat....

I think you should try to see both films,WDW,INT looks really alluring and from what I've heard in critiques and in an interview with Ang,"Lust,Caution" should be glorious too! As for TDK,I cannot tell you how I'm lusting after...sorry, I mean looking forward to Heath's maniacal portrayal of the Joker, for which we've seen such tantalising teasers thus far. I shall be SO disappointed if Jake isn't there to support HL and Maggie at the Premiere. No excuses will be accepted!

Hey (((Pia)))! Thank you hon,Iheartyou too!

I agree,Anouska,it's a really sweet pic of devoted Dad and daughter, even though I'm not the "Gooey over babies" type (Dogs or cats, however, then I go to mush!)

I must apologise too,Anouska, that I still haven't got round to sending you,or Twistedlogic for that matter, the promised e-mail. I intend to put that right over the weekend! In the meantime, please blame WDW for taking up my currently meagre Net-time by putting up such darn good posts! It's all her fault! ;-)

Get well soon,Mr. and Mrs. WDW xxx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks so much Trekfan - I'm feeling a bit better now but having to look after a sick Mr WDW. I wonder if Jake is back in NM too...

Hi Anouska! Hope you're feeling a bit better too *) I know, fab pic of Peter and Ramona... I think one film follows straight on from another. Too much possibly? Have to see what I feel like tomorrow.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nadine - Great comment! Thanks - and we were posting at the same time :) It's great about the WGA, it really is. Do watch th intreview with Omar - he's just great. I watched him being interviewed outside my hotel in Toronto. I don't know how people can think on their feet like that.

Feel free to blame me, I'm glad to take up all your net time!! So you'd better read the new post too now! *)

I wonder if David Fincher's perfectionism isn't maybe overstated. Jake and Mark are the main actors who suffered from so many takes, and they are people who put enormous amounts of energy into everything they do. Naturally, prolonging their agony like that would hurt.

I liked the interview with hloe Sevigny. Yes, jake was quite watchable in TDAT.

Oh, and I had another Jake dream last night. I dreamed that he had worked at a small convenience store just down the street from where my parents live. I had met him while shopping there. At the time of the dream, the store was long gone, but those of us in the neighborhood had memories of it.
