Jake's 'magical and magnetic performances that are equal parts heat and light'

The flood alerts are back in the UK but instead of the deluge pointing me in my usual direction of The Day After Tomorrow and the waterlogged, ship-strewn streets of NYC, this time I've gone the other way. It's made me think of the summer with longing and nostalgia, which means Jake in Hawaii. This is where the water is supposed to be, not streaming down high streets, but providing surf for Jake, or being something to sunbathe and drink cocktails by, or even for holding a film festival by.

I've been to some film festivals in my time, and Rome and Toronto were beautiful, and Cannes was even by the sea, but the idea of a film festival in Hawaii with Jake Gyllenhaal in attendance! I can only plea to Jim Sheridan that the Maui Film Festival would provide an ideal backdrop for Brothers while the moonscapes and dust of Giant Leap would be set off to perfection.

In 2005, between 15 and 19 June, The Maui Film festival took place in Wailea: 'Headquartered on a balmy island paradise where the scent of plumeria flowers waft on the sea breeze and turquoise waves lap up to the sandy shore, the sixth annual Maui Film Festival is in sync with its uplifting setting.' More than 60 films were shown al fresco, including March of the Penguins (if they can show a film about penguins, they can show a film about the moon).

On 17 June, 'in tribute ceremonies at the Wailea Marriott Resort on Friday, the festival bestowed two new awards – the Shining Star to actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who has three major projects set for release in coming months, and the Rainmaker to the versatile and much-loved William H. Macy.' For $40 you could see: 'Shining Star Award presentation and Tribute to Jake Gyllenhaal from 7:00pm -8:00pm. Followed by the Rainmaker Award presentation to William H. Macy from 8:00pm to 9:00pm. Preceded by a Bombay Sapphire Reception from 6:30pm-7:00pm.' This means that not only would you see Jake, not only would you be in Hawaii, but you would also be able to attend a Bombay Sapphire Reception. Does it get much better than this?

Jake's Shining Star award was presented for - and it is put so beautifully - 'his ability to consistently deliver magical and magnetic performances that are equal parts heat and light. Jake modestly places the reasons for the success of his 2005/2006 movies on the scripts: 'It wasn’t really a conscious move. With ’Brokeback Mountain,’ it just moved me deeply. When I read the script, I had never read a love story that was told in the way that one was. ’Jarhead,’ that I did with Sam Mendes – I read the book and felt moved by it. It does happen to be topical, but is pretty universal. They’re all pretty universal.' (I will admit to thinking for a moment that Hawaiian Jake was describing Jarhead here as 'tropical' and not 'topical'.)

The Bombay Sapphire reception mentioned above gave the stars, including Jake, the chance to try some martinis served from ice bars: 'And, of course, you never know whom you’ll meet. Jake Gyllenhaal was among many celebs seen at the Maui Film Festival swigging a martini at the fabulous ice bars. (Note: Avoid leaning against ice bar, unless dressed in rain poncho.) Sponsored by the fun gang from Bombay Sapphire, the ice bars offered spins on the original martini. My fave was the Orchid: Sapphire gin, a splash of Chambord with a ginger ale float—yummy!!' And all this time I've been thinking that was a Cosmo...

Big names attended the 2005 festival, ('Attracting celebrities doesn't come easy, even when they are given awards plus five free days at the luxurious Four Seasons') including the Wilson brothers, Helen Hunt, Woody Harrelson, Mike Myers and William H Macy. And there was free time. On 18 June, Jake was photographed having what looked like a great time, learning how to fall of a surfboard.

WDW this was wonderful. I had not known that the reason behind Jake being in Hawaii was a film festival. Did they show BBM there?

I loved him in a lei and surfing of course. I wonder if he had ever surfed before.

I learn something new everytime I come to this blog. Bravo on being so informative

Wow, Hawaii, Bombay Sapphire martinis and Jake Gyllenhaal, Maui Film Festival, , Jake surfing in the waves, beautiful sunsets, and did I mention Jake? - can it get any better than that?

What an antidote to snowy New England (and stormy England, apparently as well!), although it's beautiful here today. As always, a great post. Always love to hear Jake's thoughts on his films. :)

Hi Trekfan - I'm glad you liked it, I had a huge amount of fun writing it :D BBM wasn't shown there, at least not that year. Jake was seen surfing in Malibu but that was later on and he seemed to have learned a lot in the meantime :D Doesn't he look gorgeous in that white t-shirt and lei :P

Hi Bertie! On a horrible day like today, this all seems like paradise to me - although Jake being about on a wintry wet dull day would do wonders for that as well ;) Good to see you :D

ah, some popular pics now have a context, thanks WDW.

hmmm, Jake and gin, what a great combination. So the ruby-coloured drink isn't a Cosmo afterall?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Yep Ruby - Jake and Bombay Sapphire (fortuitously I have a cupboard of it). And we have to switch our Ruby Drink ;)

Brilliant post, WDW!Definitely the perfect antidote to the horrible weather here atm (one of its side effects is the loss of my internet connection for most of the evening, hence why I've only just managed to get here now).
I'd never heard of the Hawaii Film festival before - just when I think there's nothing new to be learnt about Jake, you pop up with something like this *bowing down in admiration, Wayne's World style*

And I definitely prefer this version of Wet Jake to the TDAT version *drool* I never thought I'd be jealous of a surfboard :D

Hey TL - glad you got your connection going again, it's certainly blowing a gale outside my window :( Better to focus on Jake in Hawaii, surfing, drinking martinis, wearing white shirts and with flowers round his neck - sigh... Maybe in the summer when it's hot and sunny I'll do a post about Jake in the rain :D I wonder if he's ever drunk Guiness...

so if Im going to continue my imitation of the Life a Jake, Ive gotta stock the pink stuff, as well as the blue stuff? okay, Im on.

Hah! wish I was "on" Maui! Is that Jake's darling head shown in the last wipe-out picture? the idea of his delish body in the surf makes me just wanna kiss him all over.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Fraid so Pia - need plenty of the red stuff. That is Jake at the end there! Quite spectacular. I think you may need to fish him out :D

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! I'm happy to focus on Hawaiian Jake, and Jake in the rain, but what does Guinness have to do with anything? you've lost me there, I'm afraid...

And Pia, I think it's Jake's head too, and it looks like the surfboard is heading straight for him! Yikes! i hope it missed:)

OMY I'll fish him out and kiss him all over snd keep on doin' it until spring comes.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

My brain works in funny ways TL and thinking about Jake in the rain made me think of a very wet Irish holiday I had one year - so I was just thinking out loud if Jake had ever tried the stuff :D

Pia Just the spring? Well maybe the rest of us can take over then - Jake's army of retouchers!

he's gonna need quite a bit of re-touching, you know how it is when you get thrown about in the surf, sand in his private places (similarly to in the desert as he reminded us speaking of Jarhead filming, the flirt), his darling hair, his adorable doable ears, etcetc. not a job for the half-hearted!

Anonymous said...

p.s. gonna go finish the ZDVD special effects piece, and come back for the Las Vegas Nev. primary live blogging. see y'all later!

happy surfing!

Anonymous said...

p.p.s. it's a debate, not a primary: Jake-in-the-surf has got me all distracted.

twistedlogic said...

Ah, gotcha WDw! Personally, I hate the taste of Guinness, but I have a weakness for Irish accents, so Jake in Ireland would totally work for me:)
And if we're allocating re-touching jobs again, I claim Jake's chest!

Anonymous said...

Adorable WDW! I love the "action shots" of Jake surfing...LOLOL!

For $40 we could have all been hanging out with Jake! How cool is that!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia It's a tough job that's for sure but I think we're the people for the job :)

Jake would look great in Ireland TL - well, I know he looks great anywhere, but I can see him in Ireland. But maybe not with a Guinness, maybe a Bushmills instead. I'm not so keen on the dark stuff myself (although Mr WDW can't get enough of it). Ok, you can have his chest (albeit begrudgingly) but that leaves the rest of him for me :D

It has been fun to gush and dream of Jake in sand, on beaches, with cocktails, with flowers, on such a gloomy winter's day. It actually feels quite sunny now ;) But it's tomorrow already so I'm off - thanks to you all and Jake for cheering up an evening - g'night *)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Bobbyanna - glad I caught you :D Yep, for $40 we could have had an evening with Jake, Bombay Sapphires and experienced Hawaii to boot. I s'pose the flight/hotels might have cost a bit more than that.... but well worth every penny :D

Goodnight, WDW - sweet Jake dreams:) I had a really scary dream about Zodiac last night, Jake wasn't in it, but the Arthur Leigh Allen character was, accusing me of stalking him! I was planning to watch the DC version of Zodiac tonight but I chickened out.I know, I'm such a wuss...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Scarey dream... :\ I'm surprised I've had none of those the amount of time I've spent watching Zodiac this week! But last night I dreamt that I went to this smart function in London (definitely a dream then) and Jake was modelling on a catwalk - he did a good job too :D Night *)

Another fantastic and informative post, WDW!! Well done, and you've gone a long way in making me try and forget the dismal weather outside and that takes some doing.

Love this post because, like others, I had no idea what these pics were actually for, even though I've seen them many times. So this was AFTER BBM? He looks so young!! Some of the pics I've never seen before, such as the one of him sat down, talking to someone who, from the back, looks like Kirsten? Could it be her? Anyway, I think he looks beautiful, as he does in all of them. You can imagine Jake having lots of fun at such a place, and what a great idea to have a film festival there. I'm glad it attracted big names. I wonder what made Jake attend? And I agree, the praise heaped on Jake here is wonderful and beautifully described. "Magical and Magnetic" - yep, sounds about right! Thanks WDW!

Mornig everyone :) A beautiful day today, thinking about Hawaii Jake must have helped.

Hi Christie :) I'm glad the post took your mind off things, that was certainly an intention of it. I suppose Jake attended because he had three films about to come out - also they did give him an award and it looks like a good way to spend a week before the onset of the Zodiac filming. I don't think Kirsten was there. I think those particular pics were at the press junket at the reception. Have a good day and thanks for commenting :D

[Twisted Logic]

Maybe your dream can be the basis for "Zodiac II". Who knew there could
be a sequel? ;-)

[Wet Dark and Wild]

A catwalk? I hope he left Atticus at home.....

"So this was AFTER BBM?" [Christie]

You're half right. It was after he filmed BBm, but before the rest of us
got to see it in the theaters. :-)

Afternoon WDW and everyone,

Fantastic post! I absolutely love Jake in his lei, and his colorful shirts, and his board trunks, and, and, and,.. *sigh*
Jake and Hawaii... priceless!

The cocktail looks delicious. I also thought it was a Cosmo, when I saw those pics. NOT!:)
I may carry its name around town with me for a while and try to get one made. If it's really good and strong, my only problem will be, how to carefully navigate the trains on the way home:)

I watched Zodiac again last night, and started on its commentary. Jake's commentary is first up of course. I'm enjoying listening to him and the other commentators, including the best crime writer in the universe;) I've often thought about Mr. Elroy, and the tragedy that befell him and his mother.

It looks like I may have a Zodiac day:)
Take care and stay safe everyone,
sass

Good aevening/afternoon everyone :D Good to be home...

Hi Paulh - When I heard that poor old Britney had become obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac killer, I thought here's a gift for David Fincher - Zodiac II :D

Hey Sass - I fancy one of those pink martinis right now! I suppose it's a raspberry one? I must investigate and compare the shades of pink and red. I do like my cosmos though...

I'm glad you're enjoying the commentary, it's an absolute delight, although I wish there was more Jake and RDJ. There are some great accents on that commentary though.

for me pink gin has always been gin and bitters: I dont have Chambord in my closet.

oh, hello, y'all. havent the faintest idea where is donnie darko but the weather report in Western Massachusetts usa is "abundant sunshine" although brrrrr. still, I'll take it.

I was so delighted with the picture of Jake's adorable head in the surf off Maui but decided I didnt want to fish him out to kiss him all over (although that, too), but to plop him down in his own (already established) production company and ask him what he has in mind.

I love that Jake and Heath both loved ONCE - am watching that now. It's been called a "musical". Honestly! Its about music and musicians and etcetec. So far I love it. '

WDW so interesting you dreamed of Jake on a catwalk - red carpet is LIKE that, isn't it? do you think that was a connection, in some way? you've BEEN THERE.

on the other hand images of Jake The Cat (magnetic, magical) or maybe cat burglar? what was that Cary Grant film? oh, right, To Catch A Thief.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia! We've had some of that abundant sunshine here today too - although it's the lull before the storm continues tomorrow. Wouldn't mind knowing whre Donnie is :)

You got Once already! I can't wait to see it and it's on order.

I hadn't thought about that, Pia, Jake and the red carpet. Maybe I will always associate Jake with carpets! He certainly looks incredible walking down them.

oh man that boy does a catwalk (aka red carpet)like nobody else - triple swooooon!
