Vote for Source Code in the SFX Awards and Jake Lumberjack Gyllenhaal eats his way through New York City

As the year cracks on, it's time for another poll. You can still vote for Jake Gyllenhaal in the SCREAM awards - and please do keep clicking that link! - and now it's the SFX awards. Talking of polls. Some make sense and some don't. This is possibly the least sense making of any that I've heard. Ever. Jake Gyllenhaal came second in a poll to decide which celebrity should marry Pippa Middleton, aka The Royal Sister. 'Ryan Reynolds topped the vote for The Royal Sister's Suitor - 22 per cent of readers thought he would make the perfect boyfriend for the Duchess of Cambridge's sister Pippa Middleton. Jake Gyllenhaal and Leonardo DiCaprio tied for second place with 18 per cent.' Extraordinary. Of course, if The Royal Sister herself had been asked for her opinion, obviously Jake would have been top of her list.

Talking of Jake, sightings continue of him in the Big Apple, doing what he does best. Eating out. More alarming are reports that he's doing his lumberjack impression again. You know what that means - lumberjack one day, sasquatch the next. Here's another sighting and another... According to the NY Post, there was also a sighting of  'Jake Gyllenhaal hanging with female friends Wednesday night at the bar of Andrew Carmellini’s restaurant, The Dutch, in SoHo.'

While spotting Jake is causing some people to almost faint, it's moving others to words. This wonderful open letter to Jake was written after he was seen and marvelled over at New York's Angelica Kitchen. The food, which contains no animal, dairy or egg products, sounds incredible. Extra points to Jake for going vegan!

I do hope the restaurants of New York have got a lot of food in...

A short time ago, when the weather was as cold as it is again in parts of the US north east, I did a feature about Jake Gyllenhaal's appearance at the glamorous, martini-rich Maui Film Festival in Hawaii in 2005. Moving pictures of Jake at this event are not easy to come by, so I was thrilled to see that this video - entitled This Is Your Life - features clips of Jake at Maui.


The video also includes clips of Jake at other events, such as Rock the Vote, the BAFTAs in 2006 and at numerous red carpets, charming fans and media alike.


Yesterday, we were discussing whether Jake may be lined up to do The Moon Project or Nailed (if he's doing that at all). Today, another interview, in Rope of Silicon, with Doug Liman appeared - all thanks to Doug doing publicity for his new film Jumper - and again he mentions the project. Interestingly, Doug does not refer to the film as Giant Leap, just as The Moon Project, which makes me think this film may be lucky enough to have a better title after all.


'As far as the future is concerned are you still looking at the Moon Project you have with Jake Gyllenhaal as your next film? DL: That's what I am working on, but I so fall in love with the characters of the current film I am working on, and at this point in my career I've had the good fortune of falling in love with every character I have worked with and the actors that have played them it is hard to imagine leaving the world of Jumper behind to go do the Moon Project. I am having separation anxiety, but maybe a two week break I'll be ready to date something new.'


Some good news today for anyone who is a fan of David Shire's superb filmscore for Zodiac. The members of the International Film Music Critics Association announced the winners of its 4th Annual IFMCA Awards, and David Shire was among them, taking the prize for Best original score - Horror/thriller. You can read more about the score - and the orchestration of Zodiac's characters - here. But let's take another look at Hawaiian Jake.

Jake's 'magical and magnetic performances that are equal parts heat and light'

The flood alerts are back in the UK but instead of the deluge pointing me in my usual direction of The Day After Tomorrow and the waterlogged, ship-strewn streets of NYC, this time I've gone the other way. It's made me think of the summer with longing and nostalgia, which means Jake in Hawaii. This is where the water is supposed to be, not streaming down high streets, but providing surf for Jake, or being something to sunbathe and drink cocktails by, or even for holding a film festival by.


I've been to some film festivals in my time, and Rome and Toronto were beautiful, and Cannes was even by the sea, but the idea of a film festival in Hawaii with Jake Gyllenhaal in attendance! I can only plea to Jim Sheridan that the Maui Film Festival would provide an ideal backdrop for Brothers while the moonscapes and dust of Giant Leap would be set off to perfection.



In 2005, between 15 and 19 June, The Maui Film festival took place in Wailea: 'Headquartered on a balmy island paradise where the scent of plumeria flowers waft on the sea breeze and turquoise waves lap up to the sandy shore, the sixth annual Maui Film Festival is in sync with its uplifting setting.' More than 60 films were shown al fresco, including March of the Penguins (if they can show a film about penguins, they can show a film about the moon).


On 17 June, 'in tribute ceremonies at the Wailea Marriott Resort on Friday, the festival bestowed two new awards – the Shining Star to actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who has three major projects set for release in coming months, and the Rainmaker to the versatile and much-loved William H. Macy.' For $40 you could see: 'Shining Star Award presentation and Tribute to Jake Gyllenhaal from 7:00pm -8:00pm. Followed by the Rainmaker Award presentation to William H. Macy from 8:00pm to 9:00pm. Preceded by a Bombay Sapphire Reception from 6:30pm-7:00pm.' This means that not only would you see Jake, not only would you be in Hawaii, but you would also be able to attend a Bombay Sapphire Reception. Does it get much better than this?



Jake's Shining Star award was presented for - and it is put so beautifully - 'his ability to consistently deliver magical and magnetic performances that are equal parts heat and light. Jake modestly places the reasons for the success of his 2005/2006 movies on the scripts: 'It wasn’t really a conscious move. With ’Brokeback Mountain,’ it just moved me deeply. When I read the script, I had never read a love story that was told in the way that one was. ’Jarhead,’ that I did with Sam Mendes – I read the book and felt moved by it. It does happen to be topical, but is pretty universal. They’re all pretty universal.' (I will admit to thinking for a moment that Hawaiian Jake was describing Jarhead here as 'tropical' and not 'topical'.)



The Bombay Sapphire reception mentioned above gave the stars, including Jake, the chance to try some martinis served from ice bars: 'And, of course, you never know whom you’ll meet. Jake Gyllenhaal was among many celebs seen at the Maui Film Festival swigging a martini at the fabulous ice bars. (Note: Avoid leaning against ice bar, unless dressed in rain poncho.) Sponsored by the fun gang from Bombay Sapphire, the ice bars offered spins on the original martini. My fave was the Orchid: Sapphire gin, a splash of Chambord with a ginger ale float—yummy!!' And all this time I've been thinking that was a Cosmo...




Big names attended the 2005 festival, ('Attracting celebrities doesn't come easy, even when they are given awards plus five free days at the luxurious Four Seasons') including the Wilson brothers, Helen Hunt, Woody Harrelson, Mike Myers and William H Macy. And there was free time. On 18 June, Jake was photographed having what looked like a great time, learning how to fall of a surfboard.
