Heath and Jake

A hard day - the cause of Heath's death was announced and it shouts out a lack of care from Heath's prescribers, the very people who should have given Heath the help he needed. Meanwhile, Michelle and Matilda arrived in Perth for Heath's funeral which, according to this report, may take place on Saturday.

New York's chief medical officer made the statement that: “Mr Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine," said Hirsch. "We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications."

The response from Heath's father, Kim: “Heath’s accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage.”

It's unsettling how coincidences happen, but they do. Jake Gyllenhaal is on the cover of the new Italian Vanity Fair, accompanied by photographs from Mark Seliger's Interview shoot. The interview took place three months ago, when none of us could have imagined how the year would begin. In the interview, Jake discusses the dangers of fame and thanks his parents for protecting him from the film world during his childhood - allowing him a peek but keeping him safe.

It may have felt hard at the time, not to have been allowed to do roles, but now Jake realises 'That was love. Having a child who asks about making a film is like having someone who wants permission to go to a party where everyone is drinking and taking drugs... They wanted to protect me.'

Forgive this translation, it's mine and poor, all mistakes are mine and certainly not Jake's. 'Becoming famous early is dangerous. I have frequently seen actors who have had suuccessful lives come to a bad end. I'm lucky becaue I have a family that helped me to avoid making the wrong steps. The only people who can help you are those who are around you in difficult times.' But as the article concludes, aware of what has happened to Heath, sometimes this is not enough.

Elsewhere, Jake discusses the politics of acting and says that, although he admires George Clooney and Sean Penn, that's not for him: 'I would like to be considered for what I am, with my own thoughts and my own priorities.' Jake talks about how much he enjoyed philosphy at school and how having a Jewish mother and a Christian father made him open to the appeal of Buddhism, which he studied at Columbia. It allowed Jake to break free of a 'cage of rigid rules' and it opened his mind.

Having politely refused to discuss a relationship with Reese ('Are you trying to tell me that you're just friends?' asks the interviewer), Jake discusses love: 'Love is always fundamental to life and to me it's certainly at the heart of my career. But I'm speaking about love in general, not just about the love for one woman.'

'I think that Brokeback Mountain has been the most important experience of my career, which has opened many doors. And you know what's funny? Nobody ever asked me if I was frightened to play a CIA agent. I have taken on serious, controversial characters in my career but only when I played a gay guy was it suggested this might be 'risky', because the public might think I was really gay.'

Jake says that people may not want to speak out for fear of being made a meal of by the public, 'but I grew up in an environment where so many were gay and had no need to hide. Fortunately, the world is evolving: already, homosexuality is much more accepted in my generation. I hope that the prejudices will be overcome soon.'

Jake also discusses his appearance on SNL and the dedication of his opening number to the fans of Brokeback. Jake says that the song title was suggested by his press officer. Jake also enthuses about Italian food, a favourite amongst all his family, and jokes that cappuccino is served for Italian interviewers but the waiter has already lined up the beer for the waiting German interviewer.

As previously mentioned - please excuse all quotations which are the result of my poor Italian and my little better Latin... Thanks very much to a member of IHJ for scanning the cover and the interview.

Includes pictures from Vanity Fair and IHJ.

Like Jake, you deliver, WDW.

Heartfelt thanks for this post with its reassurance that Jake has what it takes to deal with this tragedy.

Yes, he did indeed deliver. Lovely, lovely interview and post WDW. Such sad news today; this shouldn't have happened, and yet it helps a little to read this. :'(

Thanks Pia - that means so much - I'm struggling today, really badly. Some of the things Jake says - they're like the thoughts of an old man. But as you say, able to cope with what life throws at him.

Hi Bertie - thank you. I'm glad this helps a little - I'm clinging onto it myself :(

Thanks K for posting. I am so so sad to find out how Heath died, because I know incidents like this can be prevented so easily...I just shudder to think of how it happened.
We still have not heard from Jake, and I do not care if we ever do. The death of anyone close to you is so hard to handle...you just cannot get a grip on the reality. I do not wonder at his silence..I hope he will find a way..through family..friends etc..to at least cope...you never get over it..but you can cope...
Thanks again babe for always being there for your readers...love and hugs..Michele

Oh Michele - thank you so much for those kind words - I'm very grateful for everyone here and for every voice. I can't get my head round how this should never have happened. Absolutely agree - 100% - Jake must be left in peace to deal with this and nothing must be expected from him. I hope he's getting all the support he must need.

Thank you for your wonderful post and I have a question: on the cover I can see words "solo" and "cowboy" and Heath's name. Anyone knows what the exact translation of this sentence is? Thanks

Anonymous said...

WDW, thank you. Still so sad about Heath. Just tragic and I hope his loved ones are just left alone. No one should be allowed that many prescriptions at once. I am sure it was from different doctors in different countries/movie sets to just give Heath a little calm and sleep.

Thank you for the translation of the Jake interview. His words are very profound.

Always hugs to you all.

It certainly has been a hard day WDW.. just so unbearably sad.

Thank you for the post, and the translation of Jake's interview, he is a wise young man.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - thanks - I'm so glad you liked the post. I'm not absolutely sure but a literal translation is 'Jake Gyllenhaal, The cowboy, And now left alone', referring to the loss of Heath.

Hi Get Real - it's hard thinking how tired Heath must have been to have taken so many prescriptions. Hugs back - good to read Jake's words at this time.

Rosie - such a difficult day, with more to come. But I'm glad you enjoyed Jake's words - I know I did too.

"lone cowboy" ? wonder it's like to be caught, in the public imaginataion, in a character you have played in a film.

Jake's been pretty good at saying "but that's not me. . . "

I hear Vanity Fair party is cancelled because of Writers Strike, even if it is settled.

I like Leonard Cohen when Im upset.
Where is Anouska?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia - I think it must be extremely difficult to feel like you will be forever known for one role and Heath's loss of course is going to make it extra hard for Jake. I can see that he embraces what BBM gave him but it must be hard.

It's a shame about the party - it would be good for people to get together and celebrate the movies.

I'm around pia - feeling wan as well. *

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm feeling wan too, Anouska. What a day, what an evening. I'm going to curl up now with some Jake and Heath on a mountain, along with some Californian red and some Hotel Chocolat praline chocolate log. xx

Hey (((WDW))) thank you so much for putting up this beautiful post when you're obviously struggling as much as the rest of us. I love the pictures you chose of Heath too,one as a young, beautiful and seemingly carefree boy and the other a beloved shot of Heath as Ennis, during those halcyon days on The Mountain.

Thanks too for the translation of the Italian article. It's of some comfort that Jake's family have imbued him with great emotional intelligence and are still there,as always, waiting to catch him if he falls. He's going to need their unstinting love and support more than ever now.

I hope having Matilda amongst them is providing much needed rays of sunshine in dark days for Michelle and Heath's family,a miniature reflection of her lovely Daddy. God bless and comfort them all in hard times ahead.

A "Lonesome Cowboy" to paraphrase the headline - how poignant is that?.I hope that somehow Jake knows just how much love, compassion and understanding there is out here for a man hurting so badly at the loss of a unique and much-loved friend...

Love to you all Nxxx

Just stopping by to say thanks WDW for the VF interview. I know it's not easy, and don't want you to think I don't apprciate it. I just don't have anything to say, it's all so f***ed up - sorry I don't know how else to put it. I'm listening to Leonard Cohen too, Pia, with a bit John Lennon in there too. (((Hugs))) to everyone and to (((Jake)))

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nadine - that is a wonderful comment - I don't know what to say. You put it just beautifully. I love how you say that Jake's family can catch him if he falls, maybe like now. Matilda must be a comfort over there in Perth - a real focus. I really, really hope Jake knows that.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

(((Twisted Logic))) Thanks so much for coming by - I've been thinking of you a great deal - and you know where I am. xxK

twistedlogic said...

(((Nadine))) Thanks for (yet again) saying exactly what I'm feeling and saying it so beautifully too.

And (((WDW))) I do know that and it means so much to me, I can't tell you...And the feeling's mutualxx

I am glad to see that Jake acknowledged the significance of BBM to him and his career again. And he's very perceptive about why people made so much fuss about playing a gay cowboy than playing a controversial CIA agent...

Jake's protecting circle makes me yearn for something like this for Heath - sooner. :'(

Thanks for the heartfelt post.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird * - Jake is canny, that's for sure. I wish Heath had been secure in that circle too - easier for Jake though in LA with his family. Heath was on the other side of the world.

Thank for this interview and for everything you do for us.

Heath's cause of death can only add to the suffering of people close to him...wondering how, when and where they might have been able to help him...even if they know they couldn't have helped him at all.

Jake's interview is just what I needed, because I worry about him. And it's timely, especially when I read about some of our actors and musicians lives.

A few actors checked themselves into psych units this week for evaluation and treatment, probably because of Heath's tragic death.

The DEA is bound to investigate all deaths that occur from accidental medication overdosing, so it's not over yet. Doctors will be located and questioned, both here and in the UK.

Anonymous said...

Nadine thank you for that comment. I feel the same way. TL good to see you here. Please know we are here. This is a hard time for all of us and it has helped me when everyone shares their feelings.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Sass, I think that is so true. I think so many people near Heath will feel lost because of this announcement - but there's nothing any one of them could have done. The responsibility is with the prescribers. It's so easy to forget what you've taken when you're ill.

I'm worrying abut Jake too. And tonight I was so sad to see that another familiar face, Kirsten, may have gone into rehab.

Hi Get Real - thanks for that comment. We need to prop each other up.

Anonymous said...

"Jake's protecting circle makes me yearn for something like this for Heath - sooner. :'("

Me too! :(

WDW, thanks for translating the interview. Very much appreciated!

Anonymous said...

I think Heath had a lot of problems, sadly.

Anonymous said...

I'm with you all that I wish Heath had that support on hand. Clearly his family adored him but they were far away in Australia. :(

WDW, I heard about Kirsten. If it is true I hope she gets the help she needs.

Anonymous said...

Heath's death has been called an accident. I dont see the point of discussng substance abuse among celebs, or personal problems of celebs including HL. I do expect there to be some accountability regarding the unlicensed masseuse, and, as Sass says, MDs who prescribed drugs. Also I would hope drug companies.

Everybody's probably snoozing by now, and Im off to bed with hot teddy, made him take off his cowboy boots, that I ordered especially for him.

thank you so much everybody for sharing your thots and feelings. see you all tomorrow.

((((((everypeeps)))))

Anonymous said...

^^I agree, Pia. I'm also glad to hear that Kiki is in rehab, and I hope she'll have her friends and family rally around her, and her fans of course. I'm so glad our remaining cowboy has such a wonderful family and support system too. Heath is with his loving family too. :'( Goodnight, all.

Thanks for the translation of this article. So is it safe to say that this article will never be issued in English, and if not for you WDW, we would never have known the contents of it? Then double-thanks to you!

Une petite favore, s'il te plait, can you please tell us more about what Jake says about his SNL homerun, singing the Dreamgirls song? Anything and everything about that performance, please and thank-you. I've watched it more than a hundred times, I think Jake was genius in it! Guh!

Jake G., the cowboy was left lonely: "BBM offered me the most important experience of my career, and a true fiend", who was called Heath Ledger, and who now is no more.

BTW, very good translation, Kate. Ciao!

Very very sad news about Heath's death but pretty much what I expected...
Oh Heath you needed better prescribers...:(

The one who posted the article on IHJ it's ME! Bianca, the poster's nick, is the nick I once chose for that forum and remained the same...:)

As for the complete translation (even if Kate's one is not bad at all ;))I and another Italian IHJ member are working on it.
I'm sorry I didn't provide it immediately but I wanted the article posted as soon as possible...:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone. Hope everyone's OK after another emotoional night.

Xenia - that was you! I had no idea, you dark horse you (By the way, I think you'll guess what I'd like to ask you ;) ). Looking forward very much to seeing your translation. Thanks so much for scanning it!

Thanks so much for the kind comments about how I did and a big thanks to Anon 5:40 for translating the cover. So poignant now :(

Anon 2:51 - I don't have the interview with me (I'm at work) but I will put that bit up when I get in - or if someone else has access to it before then?

And hi Bertie, Pia and Get Real - hope you had a good night. If it's true about Kirsten I hope she's being rallied round. And yes thinking of the lone cowboy today - that is such a painful thought - I used to think that was Ennis.

Have a good day everyone.

Yes I know...I will. ;)

I'm sorry to bring that up again, but how can anyone deny that a person who needs antianxiety pills, antidepressants and sleeping pills has serious problems?
But it really is pointless to discuss that now, it's too late anyway.
Again thanks for translating the interview. It was great!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I agree, Anon, and it's heartbreaking. Not least, because, as you say, it is too late to do anything about it, and it's painful to discuss.

I'm glad you liked the interview - thanks :)

Ten pm yesterday in Perth, sixty eight degrees and kinda rainy. Today forecast in the eighties maybe rainy some more.

G'morning darlin's. Some interesting dreams to write down.

Anon, I'll try to be more cleaer about my remark - dont mean to deny that Heath had serious problems or what they were, but Im hestitant to go down that road which sometimes can emd in disparaging of the person. Does this make any sense?

He's said publicly that he's had trouble sleeping, for some time, been taking Ambien, and its been said by reliable sources tht he's been exhausted and ill. Beyond this that we know it deems to verge on speculation.

Back to analyzing last night's dream.

p.s. Xenia! how fortunate to have you among us! The timeing of the VF article was so good, and reassuiring that Jzke's on his game
amd also the acknowledgement of his loss. WDW congrats on your command of languages, and waiting for full translation. We are very lucky.

Morning Pia - hope you're doing good today. Rainy and hot in Perth, then. Absolutely agree about the timing of the article - and good to hear something of Jake. See you all later - not too long now...

I dunno WDW, I will share later my interesting dream.

In the meantime, I will keep my lip zipped and my heart ready for - whatever!

dont go away, y'all. . . . .

Heath is emerging as a very complicated young man. Layers upon layers. Appearing to be all right, in command, and deep down, so deep it was buried and hard to find, he was a mess. Did he set up his own "support system" then sabotage it, not always consciously? It is possible his parents, from the time he was a child, really thought he was coping well with their divorce and his constant shuttling back and forth, but in fact, he wasn't OK at all.
Like he would want you to think he could handle things, even take care of you, but he was very fragile inside and who really knew?

Anonymous said...

I'm heart-broken, but my thoughts and prayers are truly all with Heath's family, today.

A great part of the pain of Heath's death, for those closest to him, who truly loved him, will be reconstructing conversations, and retracing steps, trying to remember everything, looking for signs, second guessing themselves.
Thinking that somehow, they could have prevented it if they'd known or done more.

It also occurs to me that many people still do not understand Depression. When someone is depressed, they simply equate it with being temporarily "down in the dumps." and think a person will come out of it on their own in time.

It is possible his prescribers in one country may have admonished him to "see your regular doctor about this when you get home..."
You almost wonder if Heath even had a regular physician. Don't actors usually get physicals through the studio for insurance purposes before they start filming?

Some people actually think Heath took all these pills at once. But in some cases, some of these meds stay in your system for more than 24 hours. So they "accumulate."

I feel so drained and sad about all of this. Sorry for rambling.

Anonymous said...

Heath was no doubt a very talented actor. Most people who knew him described him as very nice and I believe them, but he obviously was very troubled too. To me he often came off as eccentric and weird. He is a mystery to me. I'll still miss him very much!

paulh said...

I wouldn't be so hard on the masseuse, who probably never had imagined having to deal with this kind of situation.

But Heath's doctors? Very substandard, IMO. I go for teeth cleaning four times a year, and every single time they want to know what medications I'm taking, or whether the profile they already have needs to be changed. Every time I see my PCP for a physical, he wants me to spell out *every* medication I'm taking.

In heath's case, it should not have mattered what country his prescriptions were made in. *Every* med he was taking should have been requested *every* time a new p[rescription was written out.

And there's more: although primary care physicians are not psychiatrists, they get enough training in symptoms of depression that they should be able to ask questions about Heath's descriptions of his mind racing and his only getting 2 hours of sleep at night. He even said those things in an interview that was in print. We aren't talking about keeping it all inside.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone - made it home, very tired. Who knows what was going on in Heath's mind during the last few days, weeks, and, for myself, I feel nothing but pain thinking on it, so I'm going to spare myself. For sure, Heath was eccentric, he could be delightfully odd and he was always fascinating and mysterious and sexy, and now he's missed.

Good to see you all :)

The Karrakatta cemetary where Heath will be buried is said to be very beautiful, with kookaburras singing, gardens, park and cafe, even. It is in Karrakatta, a suburb of Perth. Here is something about the dervication of the name.

KARRAKATTA

The termination katta is well known, and is given as the Aboriginal word for a hill, or the top of any height, in the early Aboriginal vocabularies. The karra is more difficult as it may be derived from - Karri - a crab, Karak - the red-tailed black cockatoo, Kara - a spider, Karh-rh - an orchid with an edible root. The meaning of the combined word could therefore be the hill, or top of the hill, where the orchid with the edible root is found, or the hill frequented by the red-tailed black cockatoo, or the hill where spiders are found and so on. It is not definitely known which is the exact area called by the Aborigines "Karrakatta"
