Jake: Democrats make better lovers

Today is Pancake Day or, as it is known in the US, Super Tuesday. And while we in the UK eat pancakes (preferably with a generous squeeze of lemon juice and a frugal sprinkling of sugar), the people of a sizeable slice of the US go out to vote (preferably for a Democrat). So on Super Fat Pancake Tuesday, it seems fitting to get in the mood and be a little political. Bearing in mind that I'm a Brit with no voting rights in the US, nor a knowledge of either of the Democratic candidates, except that I saw Hillary Clinton perusing the bread section in my local supermarket a couple of years ago and that I seem to bump into her husband with embarrassing regularity (usually while he's out jogging), I'm allowing myself to be led by Jake Gyllenhaal who clearly has some opinions about the qualifications necessary to be a Democrat:

Of course, Jake is a private person and whomever he votes for is his own business, although one can be fairly sure it's a Democrat. It turns out that Jake is on the advisory board for the documentary film Crawford, which tells the story of a small town in Texas (a population of only 700 or so), which suddenly found itself the centre of attention when a new resident moved in - George W Bush. This film looks at what it was like for the citizens of the town to live through the years of the Bush presidency after being shoved so unexpectedly into the spotlight after Bush's arrival at the head of an army of media. Here is the trailer.

The film will premiere on 8 March at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The other members of the movie's advisory board, alongside Jake, are Ted Danson, Gideon Lester, Mary Steenburgen, Brad Silberling (of Moonlight Mile fame) and Claudia Well. More than a few of these are well known residents of Martha's Vineyard, for at least part of the year.

While we're talking about Jake and politics, back in 2004 (see the photos at the head of the feature), Jake campaigned for Kerry and Edwards. This included speaking at a rally for students at Carroll College in Wisconson. Here's what the lucky students got to see.

Elsewhere

The Tech - the newspaper of Massachusetts's MIT - has voted Zodiac as one of its films of 2007, mainly, from what I can see, because of Jake. This is what it has to say: 'Jake Gyllenhaal’s roles seem to possess him, and this is certainly true in the murder flick and biopic “Zodiac.” Gyllenhaal plays real life cartoonist-turned-novelist Robert Graysmith, who falls into an amateur investigation of the horrific Zodiac serial killings that took place in the late 1960s. The film is long, truly, but also engaging; it offers the historical gore while also revealing the real manifestations of the investigation in Graysmith’s life. We feel his rightful paranoia, we grow uneasy as his obsession destroys his marriage, and we bite our nails as he happens upon the truth.'

WDW this was wonderful. I know that Jake is a democrat. I loved the Democrat make better lovers T shirt he had worn.

I was wondering who is going to vote for but I know that is his business. I know he'll be voting democrat (so will I)

Thanks for the wonderful vids

Hey Trekfan - I am SO glad you enjoyed this post - I know what a hard time you're going through. I just love that shirt... I'm wondering too but I guess Jake will support whichever Democrat comes out on top, if you see what I mean :D I'm glad you like the videos. As something of a political campaigner myself - at least in the past when I had the time - I do like to see that Jake is still involved in voicing a political opinion. The film looks very intriguing.

I happen to admire Jake's politics, and only wish younger people were more like him. His activism shows up in many of his career choices, without a doubt.

Jake has had contact with the Clintons (Chelsea, to be exact), but I think he would also be the type who would gravitate toward's Obama's idealism.

Whatever choice you make, Jake, is fine by me. But I'm an Obama supporter all the way! :-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Tpe - Jake's activism is a very attractive part of him, that's for sure, and it does show. It must be difficult for Jake considering his famiy's friendship with the Clintons, but even s I doubt that would influence a private vote. Ahh, another Obama supporter - it is a relief being a neutral over here :)

Anonymous said...

O well I might as well show up as casting a vote for Hillary, although I greatly admire Barry O. Think she has the best chance of beating McCain. Very interesting stuff going on!

Where DO you find these goodies, WDW - ? - you've got MY vote!

Also casting a vote for pancakes although I think I'll roll some flounder in pancake flour, squeeze a lemon on them, and call it pancakes. whatever! let the good times roll. :( :( (visitor slipped on the ice - can you imagine in the time of global warming those poor penguins marchin' and slippin' and slidin'
Today is VERY TDAT! Im headed for the NYC public library, sure enuff!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - I feel like the mpartial host of one of those political debates on TV! I reckon this has got to be a difficult choice. But yeah please vote for me :D

Hmmm, I don't know if flounder can ever count as pancakes... But the throught's there :) If it's at all TDAT - get to the library!!! And watch out for those wolves unless you're prepared to hit one of them over the head with a torch.

An evening of thunderstorms here... :\

Dear Pia, I think it's a win-win situation for the Dems this year, in either case. I suspect that once the party nominee is established, Jake will campaign for this person, as he had done in previous years.

And yes, WDW, his activism is not just for show. For Jake and his family, causes are not fads.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Agreed Tpe - the Democrats look good from this distant perspective at least. I love that about Jake and his family.

Hello people,hi (((WDW))) I have nothing much meaningful to say tonight, because I'm a few posts behind,a situation which I hope to put right tomorrow.

In the meantime,I just wanted to drop in with a hug for (((everyone))) It'll soon be midnight and two weeks, for me, since the world shifted on its axis. As we're talking democracy,I vote we all send (((Jake))) a big hug tonight as his late friend goes home one last time...

Love to all,Nadine xx

ha... i eat my pancakes with peanut butter and jam :P

that Crawford documentary sounds very interesting. I'll definitely catch it when I get the chance.

I wonder if Jake would actively campaign for the democrat candidate this year, like he did with Kerry?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nadine! So good to see you at this difficult time - and all your friends are here. I actually said to a good friend in an email today that I would wish today renamed as Give Jake A Hug Day - he deserves it through these hard days. Take care xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Winterbird - you put peanut butter on pancakes?? I am speechless - ugh! When it comes to pancakes, I'm an unapologetic purist :)

I'd love to see the Crawford documentary too - I love to see Jake involved in financing and supporting this kind of movie project. I think it's a good thing to do.

It really would be good to see Jake out on the campaign trail, as I saw Robert de Niro today on the news. I know that Jake's expressed some views this year about how actors should keep out of politics and politicians out of acting but even so I love to see him out there with a cause.

Anonymous said...

Hey, Nadine. Hugs and also I really think our tears help, too. Man, they keep coming.

Pancakes with peanut butter? Thars gross.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pia - I watched most of BM again last night and it really did me good again. I'm definitely ready for this limbo period to be over, I can't imagine how painful it is for the family.

I'm with you on the peanut butter... there are places for everything and a pancake is not the place for this :)

Anonymous said...

haha... I pretty much put peanut butter on anything that have a spread on... sorry! :P

I think Jake plays it quite right, he's politically conscious but not acting like saviour Bono or Bob Geldorf (sorry to any U2 fans). It is very tricky, sometimes I shudder when I read some silly big political proclamations from celebrities... thankfully, Jake is always tactful about this....

I remember reading an interviewer made this observation about Jake... that Jake would talk about politics or some issues passionately and knowledgeably, and then add something like "but what do I know?" at the end, to take the edge off and keep it light... what a savvy guy :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Remind me not to have a sandwich or anything like that round at your place, Winterbird ;) It's a well known fact that peanut butter is an abomination and its banning would be on my manifesto for sure.

I definitely agree - Jake's support of causes is classy and gives me none of that uneasiness I can feel when people such as Bono or Sting go so painfully over the top. I'm a big U2 fan but it does get to me. You're right - Jake is knowledgeable and well-informed but he's also modest and unassuming. I can feel some gushing coming on...

Ban peanut butter??? please don't run for mayor in London, WDW :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

What an excellent idea, Winterbird :D But just in case I've left it too late, I'll make sure I drop a line to Ken and Boris to remind them of all the votes they'd get by banning peanut butter - much more than they'd get from banning fuel emissions, I'm sure :D

To get back on topic clumsily - wouldn't it be great if Jake would come over here to take part in the mayor of London campaign!

Anonymous said...

I was about to say... i don't mind you banning peanut butter if you can get Jake to come over here and campaign for you :P

jeez... Boris will make Jake go deaf with his voice...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Jake would obviously be the campaign manager... I can hardly imagine Jake having a debate with Boris, be fun! (Incidentally, I saw Boris Johnson not that long ago cycling past Buckingham Palace, I was quite tempted to stick my foot out but I thought that wouldn't be polite ;) )

Anonymous said...

You have Boris Johnson cycling on one side and Jake Gyllenhaal leaning on a bicycle (in body tight biking gear)... who would you vote for? :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That's a tricky one and it took me a fraction of a micronanosecond to make up my mind - what a choice ;)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/graphics/2006/10/05/nboris05.jpg

Just shows, we have our elections too! Just without any stars...

paulh said...

I'm totally hopeless when it comes to making pancakes. I ruin them every time. I once went through a phase where I put peanut butter on pancakes. They're not bad that way, at least not as bad as peanut butter spaghetti sauce...

But why on earth would anyone want to ban peanut butter on general principles? Peanuts contain the same chemical (resrevatrol, I think it's called) that's found in red wine, that improves the health even if you're fat and unfit. I can't drink wine, so it's comforting to know I can get the same protection from eating peanuts.

If the Democrats are such an obvious choice, why have they not won the last two elections? (Just asking. I voted for Hillary this morning...)

I sort of doubt that Hollywood actors have a lot of impact on political contests, because they usually seem lopsidedly on one side of the political spectrum...

I loved the scene in "Donnie Darko" in which the Darko family is hotly discussing Mike Dukakis. I strongly suspect that that scene was not scripted, or at least that some of it was adlibbed. It sounded like the kind of real discussion that you could have gotten from Jake and Maggie. ;-)

Anonymous said...

LOL... Jake might take pity on Boris and give him some tips on shampoo and hair-care...

Goodnight and hopefully I'll dream of Jake personally give me a "WDW for Mayort" pin to wear.

twistedlogic said...

Incidentally, I saw Boris Johnson not that long ago cycling past Buckingham Palace, I was quite tempted to stick my foot out but I thought that wouldn't be polite

Oh WDW, that made me lol! Thank you, I really needed that:) I know,I'm a terrible person for laughing at the (imaginary) misfortune of others but let's face it Boris Johnson is a prat (and a Tory one at that).Politeness be damned next time;) Don't have anything insightful to contribute to the conversation, just wanted to say thanks for making me laugh:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul - to compare peanut butter with wine is disturbing to say the least. One of them (and I'm not talking about the peanut butter) is delicious and warming, the other (and I'm not talking about the wine) provides all the comfort of eating yak fat. Peanut butter on spaghetti? It gets worse...

I loved that scene in Donnie Darko too. I suspect that Jake loves to improvise - he's so good at it - as he mentioned in the Jarhead interview I posted the other week.

That's funny - Winterbird - Boris needs all the tips he can get. I can just imagine Jake shaking his head and tutting.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL! I hope you're feeling a little better xxxx

You're quite right, I should lift my rules for polite behaviour when faced with the reality of Boris cycling past me. He is a prat that's for sure - come on Ken! (It doesn't really compare that well with the glamour of Super Tuesday though!)

I figure this is gonna be one more stinkin' week as far as wonderin' about Jake is concerned making me wonder WHY I got involved witn this guy whom I dont even know but a dear friend reminds me that lovin' someone means you take on the pain. okay. I kmow this.

Hey WDW! Feeling a bit better now, after pancakes (lemon and sugar only here too) and A Knight's Tale.

Well I'll be voting for Ken, on a lesser of two evils basis. I would vote fr Brian Paddick (if he's still running) but it's going to be a straight race between Boris and Ken and I don't want to unwittingly help that Tory buffoon, I wouldn't trust him to run a bath let alone London!
But I'd vore for you if you were running, WDW - with or without persuasion from Jake (although he's welcome to persuade me anytime;).
Off to bed now, thanks for cheering me up xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pia - loving anyone is never meant to be easy, if the loved person didn't challenge us or puzzle us or amaze us then why would we love them? I firmly believe this and I've said this from the very beginning. Whenever I've gone anywhere to see Jake it's always been with the full knowledge that he may well not show up, as he didn't in LA. And that's fine because if it were easy then the rewards would be less. It is hard at the moment and next week is going to be difficult but this is a longhaul thing going on and none of us is on our own. Here endeth the lesson :D

TL - I'm so glad I've cheered you up a bit - that has definitely made my night. Please don't vote for anyone that may allow Boris to sneak through! Thanks for being willing to vote for me in principle. If you can get your people to talk to Jake's people, we could sort something out for the next election :)

Anonymous said...

Im voting for you also WDW!

G'nite, all!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Pia - when I'm mayor of London peanut butter will be banned and Jake will be encouraged to live in London for at least 10 months of each year. He will even be allowed to drive his big gorgeous mercedes through London without having to pay the congestion tax.

Brought back memories of Rendition for me. Thought that was interesting and wanted to share with you all.

On another note, I'm trying to locate a video of the Brokeback photocall interview session with Heath and Jake. I know it exists, because I've seen it before but I can't remember where I got it from now. I do remember that Ang Lee couldn't be present but they had him over the cell phone in it. Perhaps WDW's Googlehaal can assist me?

Thank you so much in advance!

Wish me luck. Maybe our response will be similar to the one we got from that Fox radio slime Gibson when he made his half apology, which we managed to get, after many many complaints and a letter writing campaign. With any luck we'll be able to make them remove Heaths address from the tour.

Morning everyone :) A lovely day here (for the moment anyway) and so warm.

Hi Haalin - good to see you. There was a version of that article in my London paper this morning. Very interesting - and I was disappointed there wasn't a picture of Douglas with it.

I know that video well and I think it's on the site. I'll have a dig around for it.

Hey Sass - looking good! But another peanut butter fanicer - oh dearie me... I'm looking forward to seeing the voting results today.

That's terrible about Heath's home being turned into a curiosity. Good for you for complaining to someone about it. And it goes on.

Have a good day everyone.

Dear Pancakeday Lovers,

One of the things I am entrusted with in the kitchen is frying pancakes; I have a special twist to the pan to make in be even in shape.

But not yesterday, the Day before Lent!

Yesterday I made boiled pickled pork hand and mashed turnips with potato, carrots and a small leek. Yes, all by myself, after the cookbook, just because it was Fat Tuesday and I wanted to impress on Mrs H. Well, it tasted good and she liked it. It is a very traditional old-time dish. I did it because the supermarket had a whole bunch of them "pork hands" ;-/, salted and vacued (?), at hand and it cost us less than a pound and a half per kilo.

And afterwards we had "semla", I had 1½ and Mrs H. had the rest, with warm milk and cinnamon. Yummy!

Today's luncheon was all vegs, of course. One thing was said to taste like chicken filet. Fortunately enough it didn't because that is the only part of the chicken I do not like.

Have a nice Lent :-)

WDW my love is with you in posting your column this week - as others have said, you have done such fine reporting.

Sweet Sass, I dunno if I am offended by tourist buses in Soho -,u experience of being among a weeping crowd at the still smoking site of WDW and seeing all of the heartfelt memorials, people from other countries, on their knees, for goddsake! - I recall esp a non-English speaking Japanese couple on their knees before a make-do memorial site on the Brooklyn promenade - and across the river you saw the smoke - seemed like the whole world crying. as we should. I dunno.

Having tea tomorrow with a man whose recently lost s son. O great. We can cry us a river, I guess.

Toxology report in. Hope Im not overstepping, WDW - for me its been important to know "why" - this is from NYT, just now.

"Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," medical examiner's spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a news release."

Heath's toxicology report. As WDW said, a very sad mix of things - very upsetting. I hope Heath, now that he is home, will be at rest and at peace. Michelle is there now. Reports that Jake may be. I wish they would leave him alone. (((Jake)))

Yes, we must keep each other close. Very grateful for you all and this place.

Im sticking with the NYT reports, dont wanna have to look at celebrity boobs. City Room, y'all know how to get there, has Heath's dad's fine response to toxology report and request to media for privacy. family has been unbelievably gracious.

I feel grateful to have access to a public radio station in Amherst, MA that includes liturgical music for Ash Wednesday. The liturgy for Ash Wed. is, of course, "thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return" = and meaning earth, not "dirt" as some have been told by the killers of joy.

Michelle and child are in good hands and hearts, I think.

I just read the news about the coroner's report into Heath's death and I had to come here straight away, just to "be" with everyone.

It's so sad. It would have been horribly sad enough if they had been able to decide that it was definitely a deliberate suicide,as this would have meant he was so unhappy he had chosen to take his own life, either as a rational or an irrational decision, depending on his state of mind.

The fact that it is deemed an accident makes it all the sadder somehow,as the weight of evidence would suggest that he took an inadvertent fatal cocktail of prescription drugs, just to get some respite from his symptoms, physical and psychological. The thought that he wasn't ready to leave this world and all the people he loved makes his death somehow harder to bear.

I was stunned when I read the list of medication that he had been prescribed. Having worked in pharmacy these last 30 odd years I couldn't believe that he had been written up for all these drugs simultaneously. The concomitant use of these drugs would potentiate the side-effects and possible toxicity of all of them. A mixture like this would be liable to depress the Central Nervous System and/or respiration and there was some talk of him having "walking pneumonia" as it was. All these drugs together, even in relatively small doses, would have been capable of knocking out a healthy horse.

Obviously I know nothing about Heath's medical history or the care that he received. It just makes me wonder if his nomadic life-style meant that he consulted more than one Doctor about his sleeping problems etc and wouldn't have received all his prescriptions from one pharmacy, where any interactions or contra-indications with drugs he was already taking would have been picked up at once when a new medication was added into his records. It's all pretty useless now to try to work out the whys and wherefores of what happened,he was taken in the prime of his life and it's just heart-breaking.

As for poor (((Jake))), I hope he isn't reading all the lurid "is he or isn't he" speculation as to whether he's going to Australia to attend Heath's funeral. Insensitive supposition will doubtless continue whether he attends the ceremony or not.

I also came across a typically puerile article from OK magazine's website, supposedly using information from "a friend" saying that Jake is not "moving on" even after too weeks and is still having problems accepting Heath's death. What the bloody hell do they expect??!! Sorry to get uppity, but some factions of the media are treating these awful events like an episode from some cheap soap opera, rather than the all-too-real human tragedy that it is and it grieves me that Jake and Michelle, in particular, are being written about like characters on a story-board,rather than two fragile people who have just lost someone they loved very much.

I sincerely hope my ravings and meanderings haven't upset anybody. Sometimes sadness and frustration need to be vented and this felt like the most natural place to do that.

(((WDW))) (((Everybody))) {{{Jake}}} Love and hugs to you all, Nxxx

My brother and sister work or live in Amherst, PIA, so they might have heard that radio station.

WDW, I'm sorry, but if voting for you for Mayor of London means no peanut butter, then I cannot vote for you. ;-) The next level of protest would be boycotting Spode and Wedgwood products, of course. :-)

I was on Xanax for two years, and can't believe that any doctor would be encouraging Heath to take that and Valium and some of the other things he was taking. Some doctors are sadly lax about informing patients about the limits of safety in taking multiple meds. Very sad! :-(

Hi - made it home at long last... Thank you my friends for some beautiful comments - I know how hard this report is to read. I'm not up to it yet. Need to sit quietly, have a glass of wine and think of Heath for a few minutes.

Having read various bits of gossip rubbish around the net today, I can only hope that Jake is left entirely alone. I feel very strongly that he should be spared this interminable 'Is he? Isn't he?' about the funeral and that he is allowed to grieve the way that helps him get through this. And as for Michelle - that poor girl.

Whatever the cause of death is... it's a tragic loss, whichever way you look at it. Is it avoidable? I don't know... and afraid to think too much into it. Even though I keep thinking those what ifs... what if something was there with him, someone was there to wake him up? what if...

same old craps and pressure surrounding Jake, it's getting beyond pathetic. :(

(((Jake)))

Anonymous said...

Yes, Pia, It was right to publish that, but this report does not really give the answer to the question "why", more to the question "how".

Let me explain; acting on stage and on screen is a very different thing from ordinary life. The only comparable must be the role of a preacher (tried that). Not the politian, because they go not that deep (yes, that too locally)

On every serious script for stage or screen there ought to be a warnng

"Acting can be dangerous to your health."

Sorry for this seemingly ironic commentary by altering a slogan from our tobacco packages.

But I know from very personal experience that it can be true. The feeling of power you get when you have a very good text in your head which you are about to deliver to a breathless audience in front of you, it does give you a "kick".

To walk off 'the boards that portray the world', into the world of everyday, commonplaceness, is sometimes very hard. You want to come back as soon as you have had some sleep and something to eat. Nothing must come in your way.

It gets worse, the stage-fright, worse for every year, say many old actors. But the need to get back is stronger.

And to do this, when you have a dífficult part, you have to get deeper into your soul.

It was, if I remember correctly, just after the success in his first big movie "October Sky" that Jake said in an interview: "I want to fathom my dark side."

He knew, at the age of 19, what that could mean for an actor, because actors were most of the humans he had met in his life so far. He had very likely seen the dangers when he was very young. And he probably knows how to cope with the triviality better than most actors.

I do not think Heath did. He went too far into the labyrinth of the subconscious and had not any red yarn to find his way back.

One can be so smart that you can outsmart yourself; the smarter you are, the worse it gets. I have seen that too.

Heath did not die because he wanted too. A psychiatrist should have been a help. But there was no one.

I have also had the idea that, as Nadine has written earlier, that Heath died because he had had a different doctor on each production, and the one doctor did not know what the other had perscribed and thus a lot of different drugs amassed in the bathroom cabinet. Heath desparetely wanted to sleep and in desparation he took them all.

That is at least the only explanation I can think of. And perhaps one should not think about that too much. We have Mathilda to think of, and we should give Jake good thougths, that he shall be able to fulfill his duty as a godfather. A role that few usuallly think of being of great importance.

But for Jake must have a feeling that it has. Because I believe it was his co-acting with Heath that opened the eyes of Heath for the beauty of Michelle. Heath needed to show and recieve some authentic feelings to somebody, after having acted contrary to all what he had experienced before this film.

Rest in peace.

Herman
