Of course, Jake is a private person and whomever he votes for is his own business, although one can be fairly sure it's a Democrat. It turns out that Jake is on the advisory board for the documentary film Crawford, which tells the story of a small town in Texas (a population of only 700 or so), which suddenly found itself the centre of attention when a new resident moved in - George W Bush. This film looks at what it was like for the citizens of the town to live through the years of the Bush presidency after being shoved so unexpectedly into the spotlight after Bush's arrival at the head of an army of media. Here is the trailer.
The film will premiere on 8 March at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The other members of the movie's advisory board, alongside Jake, are Ted Danson, Gideon Lester, Mary Steenburgen, Brad Silberling (of Moonlight Mile fame) and Claudia Well. More than a few of these are well known residents of Martha's Vineyard, for at least part of the year.
While we're talking about Jake and politics, back in 2004 (see the photos at the head of the feature), Jake campaigned for Kerry and Edwards. This included speaking at a rally for students at Carroll College in Wisconson. Here's what the lucky students got to see.

Hey Trekfan - I am SO glad you enjoyed this post - I know what a hard time you're going through. I just love that shirt... I'm wondering too but I guess Jake will support whichever Democrat comes out on top, if you see what I mean :D I'm glad you like the videos. As something of a political campaigner myself - at least in the past when I had the time - I do like to see that Jake is still involved in voicing a political opinion. The film looks very intriguing.
I happen to admire Jake's politics, and only wish younger people were more like him. His activism shows up in many of his career choices, without a doubt.
Jake has had contact with the Clintons (Chelsea, to be exact), but I think he would also be the type who would gravitate toward's Obama's idealism.
Whatever choice you make, Jake, is fine by me. But I'm an Obama supporter all the way! :-)
Hi Tpe - Jake's activism is a very attractive part of him, that's for sure, and it does show. It must be difficult for Jake considering his famiy's friendship with the Clintons, but even s I doubt that would influence a private vote. Ahh, another Obama supporter - it is a relief being a neutral over here :)
O well I might as well show up as casting a vote for Hillary, although I greatly admire Barry O. Think she has the best chance of beating McCain. Very interesting stuff going on!

It really would be good to see Jake out on the campaign trail, as I saw Robert de Niro today on the news. I know that Jake's expressed some views this year about how actors should keep out of politics and politicians out of acting but even so I love to see him out there with a cause.

I think Jake plays it quite right, he's politically conscious but not acting like saviour Bono or Bob Geldorf (sorry to any U2 fans). It is very tricky, sometimes I shudder when I read some silly big political proclamations from celebrities... thankfully, Jake is always tactful about this....
I remember reading an interviewer made this observation about Jake... that Jake would talk about politics or some issues passionately and knowledgeably, and then add something like "but what do I know?" at the end, to take the edge off and keep it light... what a savvy guy :)

I definitely agree - Jake's support of causes is classy and gives me none of that uneasiness I can feel when people such as Bono or Sting go so painfully over the top. I'm a big U2 fan but it does get to me. You're right - Jake is knowledgeable and well-informed but he's also modest and unassuming. I can feel some gushing coming on...

I'm totally hopeless when it comes to making pancakes. I ruin them every time. I once went through a phase where I put peanut butter on pancakes. They're not bad that way, at least not as bad as peanut butter spaghetti sauce...
But why on earth would anyone want to ban peanut butter on general principles? Peanuts contain the same chemical (resrevatrol, I think it's called) that's found in red wine, that improves the health even if you're fat and unfit. I can't drink wine, so it's comforting to know I can get the same protection from eating peanuts.
If the Democrats are such an obvious choice, why have they not won the last two elections? (Just asking. I voted for Hillary this morning...)

I loved the scene in "Donnie Darko" in which the Darko family is hotly discussing Mike Dukakis. I strongly suspect that that scene was not scripted, or at least that some of it was adlibbed. It sounded like the kind of real discussion that you could have gotten from Jake and Maggie. ;-)

Pia - loving anyone is never meant to be easy, if the loved person didn't challenge us or puzzle us or amaze us then why would we love them? I firmly believe this and I've said this from the very beginning. Whenever I've gone anywhere to see Jake it's always been with the full knowledge that he may well not show up, as he didn't in LA. And that's fine because if it were easy then the rewards would be less. It is hard at the moment and next week is going to be difficult but this is a longhaul thing going on and none of us is on our own. Here endeth the lesson :D

Dear Pancakeday Lovers,
One of the things I am entrusted with in the kitchen is frying pancakes; I have a special twist to the pan to make in be even in shape.
But not yesterday, the Day before Lent!
Yesterday I made boiled pickled pork hand and mashed turnips with potato, carrots and a small leek. Yes, all by myself, after the cookbook, just because it was Fat Tuesday and I wanted to impress on Mrs H. Well, it tasted good and she liked it. It is a very traditional old-time dish. I did it because the supermarket had a whole bunch of them "pork hands" ;-/, salted and vacued (?), at hand and it cost us less than a pound and a half per kilo.
And afterwards we had "semla", I had 1½ and Mrs H. had the rest, with warm milk and cinnamon. Yummy!
Today's luncheon was all vegs, of course. One thing was said to taste like chicken filet. Fortunately enough it didn't because that is the only part of the chicken I do not like.

I just read the news about the coroner's report into Heath's death and I had to come here straight away,just to "be" with everyone.
It's so sad. It would have been horribly sad enough if they had been able to decide that it was definitely a deliberate suicide,as this would have meant he was so unhappy he had chosen to take his own life,either as a rational or an irrational decision,depending on his state of mind.
The fact that it is deemed an accident makes it all the sadder somehow,as the weight of evidence would suggest that he took an inadvertent fatal cocktail of prescription drugs,just to get some respite from his symptoms,physical and psychological. The thought that he wasn't ready to leave this world and all the people he loved makes his death somehow harder to bear.
I was stunned when I read the list of medication that he had been prescribed. Having worked in pharmacy these last 30 odd years I couldn't believe that he had been written up for all these drugs simultaneously. The concomitant use of these drugs would potentiate the side-effects and possible toxicity of all of them. A mixture like this would be liable to depress the Central Nervous System and/or respiration and there was some talk of him having "walking pneumonia" as it was. All these drugs together,even in relatively small doses, would have been capable of knocking out a healthy horse.
Obviously I know nothing about Heath's medical history or the care that he received. It just makes me wonder if his nomadic life-style meant that he consulted more than one Doctor about his sleeping problems etc and wouldn't have received all his prescriptions from one pharmacy,where any interactions or contra-indications with drugs he was already taking would have been picked up at once when a new medication was added into his records. It's all pretty useless now to try to work out the whys and wherefores of what happened,he was taken in the prime of his life and it's just heart-breaking.
As for poor (((Jake))), I hope he isn't reading all the lurid "is he or isn't he" speculation as to whether he's going to Australia to attend Heath's funeral. Insensitive supposition will doubtless continue whether he attends the ceremony or not.
I also came across a typically puerile article from OK magazine's website, supposedly using information from "a friend" saying that Jake is not "moving on" even after too weeks and is still having problems accepting Heath's death. What the bloody hell do they expect??!! Sorry to get uppity,but some factions of the media are treating these awful events like an episode from some cheap soap opera, rather than the all-too-real human tragedy that it is and it grieves me that Jake and Michelle, in particular, are being written about like characters on a story-board,rather than two fragile people who have just lost someone they loved very much.
I sincerely hope my ravings and meanderings haven't upset anybody. Sometimes sadness and frustration need to be vented and this felt like the most natural place to do that.

I was on Xanax for two years, and can't believe that any doctor would be encouraging Heath to take that and Valium and some of the other things he was taking. Some doctors are sadly lax about informing patients about the limits of safety in taking multiple meds. Very sad! :-(

Having read various bits of gossip rubbish around the net today, I can only hope that Jake is left entirely alone. I feel very strongly that he should be spared this interminable 'Is he? Isn't he?' about the funeral and that he is allowed to grieve the way that helps him get through this. And as for Michelle - that poor girl.

Let me explain; acting on stage and on screen is a very different thing from ordinary life. The only comparable must be the role of a preacher (tried that). Not the politian, because they go not that deep (yes, that too locally)

Sorry for this seemingly ironic commentary by altering a slogan from our tobacco packages.
But I know from very personal experience that it can be true. The feeling of power you get when you have a very good text in your head which you are about to deliver to a breathless audience in front of you, it does give you a "kick".
To walk off 'the boards that portray the world', into the world of everyday, commonplaceness, is sometimes very hard. You want to come back as soon as you have had some sleep and something to eat. Nothing must come in your way.
It gets worse, the stage-fright, worse for every year, say many old actors. But the need to get back is stronger.
And to do this, when you have a dÃfficult part, you have to get deeper into your soul.
It was, if I remember correctly, just after the success in his first big movie "October Sky" that Jake said in an interview: "I want to fathom my dark side."
He knew, at the age of 19, what that could mean for an actor, because actors were most of the humans he had met in his life so far. He had very likely seen the dangers when he was very young. And he probably knows how to cope with the triviality better than most actors.
I do not think Heath did. He went too far into the labyrinth of the subconscious and had not any red yarn to find his way back.
One can be so smart that you can outsmart yourself; the smarter you are, the worse it gets. I have seen that too.
Heath did not die because he wanted too. A psychiatrist should have been a help. But there was no one.
I have also had the idea that, as Nadine has written earlier, that Heath died because he had had a different doctor on each production, and the one doctor did not know what the other had perscribed and thus a lot of different drugs amassed in the bathroom cabinet. Heath desparetely wanted to sleep and in desparation he took them all.
That is at least the only explanation I can think of. And perhaps one should not think about that too much. We have Mathilda to think of, and we should give Jake good thougths, that he shall be able to fulfill his duty as a godfather. A role that few usuallly think of being of great importance.
But for Jake must have a feeling that it has. Because I believe it was his co-acting with Heath that opened the eyes of Heath for the beauty of Michelle. Heath needed to show and recieve some authentic feelings to somebody, after having acted contrary to all what he had experienced before this film.
