Last seen wearing a leather wrap and chasing mammoths down the sides of Egypt's pyramids, 10,000 BC's Reece Ritchie has now signed up to be in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. And, according to the report, he will be playing the friend and sidekick of the Prince, who is to be played by Jake Gyllenhaal.
'The Disney film, which is being directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and Donnie Brasco) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, is due for release in August 2009. It follows the Playstation computer game classic about a prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. After attending auditions in London in January, Reece received the call that he'd got the part at the weekend and this means that he will be off to Morocco for filming of the video game adaptation in June. With the project also set to be filmed at the UK Pinewood Shepperton studios, Gyllenhaal, who has appeared in The Day After Tomorrow and Brokeback Mountain, plays the prince with Ritchie being his accomplice and best friend. The part of Princess Farah has yet to be announced.'
Whether or not this serves as confirmation, it does add credence to the rumour that Jake's next project will be Prince of Persia, with filming (in Morocco and London) to follow hard on the heels of Nailed. It also makes Jake's involvement in Roland Emmerich's 2012 - also due to start filming very soon - less likely. I am intrigued that Prince of Persia could well star two of Roland Emmerich's previous leading men and, instead of Jake and Reese in 2012, we could get Jake and Reece in Prince of Persia. For me, any film that could bring Jake to the UK is going to get my thumbs up (especially a film in which, for the Prince, a shirt is an optional extra).
So I'm going to say it again, it's a small world after all and, to emphasise this, the news came today from Variety that Maggie Gyllenhaal has signed up to replace Toni Collette in Sam Mendes' new untitled comedy. Sam Mendes, of course, directed Maggie's brother and other half in Jarhead.
The Focus Features comedy, 'which stars John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, is about a young couple who travel around the U.S. searching for a place to put down roots. Dave Eggers and wife Vendela Vida penned the original screenplay. Gyllenhaal will play a bohemian college professor who is an old friend of the character played by Krasinski. Collette dropped out of the film due to scheduling delays on the shoot, which recently got under way in Connecticut. Gyllenhaal begins lensing her role next week.'
'Lensing her role' - now there's an expression you don't hear every day. This isn't a leading role and so may fit in nicely before Maggie goes off to Tasmania to film with Paul Bettany. Going off on a bit of a tangent, if filming is due to start next week, this may indicate that Peter Sarsgaard is now finishing off filming An Education in England.
'The most beautiful thing that's ever been created'
Talking of going off on a tangent... Amy MacDonald, the Scottish singstress and self-confessed Gyllenhaalic, has been playing The Living Room in New York City. Amy's album 'This is the Life' has been a huge success in the UK and is shortly to be released in the US. The song LA is reputed to be all about a certain 'boy named J', or, as the reviewer of the NYC gig says, 'the man that Macdonald once declared “the most beautiful thing that’s ever been created."' No argument there and I heartily recommend the CD which has many fine tracks on it, in addition to the one inspired by Jake.

Thanks alot WDW for knocking me out with first picture on this post. (pia gets herself off the floor) Here's to Jake playing POP for sure! He'd be this century's version of Rudolph Valentino that made my gramma's generation fall flat on the floor in a swoon.
Lensing? I love it. Does it mean "looking at" "focusing upon" "putting into perspective" -
or what?
Hi Pia! My pleasure with the picture :D - the idea of a movie in which we have Valentino Jake (love that) leaping around in the desert - irresistible. Although I think I'd prefer a one off to a trilogy, I really hope this comes off and next summer we can swoon away. So many exotic images come to mind :D
I have no idea what 'lensing' means. I just hope it doesn't hurt.
I'm getting more into this PoP idea, particularly the London part. & Jake must really like Morocco :)
"Lensing" is being used as an alternative to "filming" in this example, Pia and K. We could be witnessing the painful birth of a verb.
Wow, fantastic news! I hoped he'd do this, I think it could be very good if done well. Plus we'll have sequels which I love if the story is good. He'll be a dream as the Prince of Persia.
Now, if we could only get him to play Heathcliff someday . . . *sigh* ;)
I'm not sure exactly how reliable the Lowestoft Journal is, so I haven't started mapping out the quickest route from here to Pinewood just yet, but it's looking very hopeful that Jake is going to do this. I suppose they could have got the information from Reece Ritchie himself. He's quite a hottie btw, are we about to witness the birth of a brand new slash pairing? ;D
Count me along with those thrilled over the notion of Jake of Persia. I have a feeling he's going to have fun with this one, and just think, kittehs, Jake-action figures!
Hey Anouska - maybe Jake's ready for another two months' of tangines :D And we could have Jake as a visitor in London - worried about the possiility of long hair but otherwise all sounds good to me :D
I wonder when they'll start lensing exactly... ;)
Hi Bertie - it really is good news. This report doesn't make it true but it doesn't half make it seem more likely. It does sound as if Reece Ritchie thinks Jake's in it and he's the one talking to the director. So fingers crossed!
Ooh - Heathcliff would be good. I do like the idea of a historical drama. I'd definitely settle for a Persian prince for now :D
Hey TL - posting at the same time :D I reckon that some of this could well have come from Reece himself and he's got to have some knowledge - surely he'd know who he was playing opposite? Get mapping! I'll get back to practising my moves in the game.
I quite liked Reece in 10,000 BC, although he looked a bit grubby in all that prehistoric muck.
Hi JoeAnn! Little Jake dolls - I could do with some of those :D Sounds like it could be a lot of fun for everyone.
I am glad he'll be playing something that will appeal to a larger audience. I have to say that his latest movies have not really excited me. Zodiac was okay, but Rendition just fizzed for me. I am hoping that Brothers might bring some attention. But quite frankly Nailed, well I am not all that thrilled by the synopsis.
This prince role intrigues me alot.
Trekfan
I am still on the fence so to speak about PoP. But I must admit I love the idea of action figures.
When I going through my Orlando phase I had so many Legolas action figures it was embarrassing. I still have them packed up in storage somewhere. Maybe some day I will get rich from them.
Anyway...
I love to hear the Maggie is working with Sam Mendes and John Krasinski (he is a doll). This sounds like great project for her.
"But I must admit I love the idea of action figures."
Re: LIVE Action Figures
Amy MacDonald has inspired me - I guess I'll start not only my own production company for control over Jake's hair, but my own band with a "litter of floppy boy musicians" aka "a stage full of handsome, brunet lads."
"Even her guitar tech bore a passing resemblance to Jake Gyllenhaal — the man that Macdonald once declared “the most beautiful thing that’s ever been created.”
Hi there Trekfan :D 'Zodiac was okay' - sob, a dagger to the heart ;) I love that film and that is an understatement. PoP intrigues me too.
Hi Bird Girl - ahh, an Orlando fan :D Little Prince Jake figures sound like a fine idea to me - ones you can dress and undress, even better. Jake really seems to have made the most of his experience of filming with Sam Mendes - this is good news for Maggie.
Hey Pia - Amy is amazing. I first listened to her because of the LA song but now I listen to her album all the time. A beautiful voice and she surrounds herself with Jake look alikes - a girl who knows what she wants and with huge talent to boot.
ah, Friday evening... Seemed like a long time coming. Hot bath, a few glasses of wine, pizza on the way, I'm making the transition from the working week to the weekend. :)
I wasn't keen on PoP, but as an alternative to 2012, I'm all for it. And we get to camp out at Shepperton :D My brother may get a lodger for a while...
Don't forgot Jonathan Ross tonight, Britses. Robert DJ and his groovy boots. Any whooping from the audience may possibly be me. :)
Hey Ruby - that sounds like a great evening :D I have no wine - I have only one small bottle of stella (although I do have lots of the blue stuff...)
Looking forward to JR tonight - I wonder if they'll show the audience when the elastic band gun comes on? Can't wait to see RDJ and his boots. I'll listen out for ya :D
Just popping in for now to say that on 11th April www.cinematical.com posted a report saying that John Maybury is to direct a new version of "Wuthering Heights" this year, with Natalie Portman cast as Cathy Earnshaw.
At the time that article was published Heathcliff hadn't been cast but perhaps Maybury wouldn't consider replicating Jake's "Brothers" pairing with Natalie by casting him as Heathcliff, more's the pity!
And, of course, the man who was just born to play Heathcliff is no longer with us,God rest him :-(
Must eat...back later xxxx
Hi there Nadine - hope you're doing OK :) I remember seeing that report and actually feeling a bit dismayed of the casting of Natalie as Cathy. I am very fond of Natalie but Cathy is one of my favourite heroines and I used to know the moors quite well - I just don't see Natalie fitting that role and that landscape.
Heath would've made an incredible Heatcliff - and I think Jake would bring something to it too - that way that he has of expressing something powerful with just a glance until it can be suppressed no more.
Wow. I love that last pic of Jake, in the black shirt. Do you know when this taken WDW?
hey everyone!! i'm done with my exams and I passed them all!!! Now I can focus on Jake sightings..
Hey Rubes, I'm afraid I don't - I'll do some searching - there are others too. I love that shirt :D
Congratulations Nicole! Good luck with the Jakequest and let us know what you find. What a great way to spend a break from work.
That's brilliant,Nicole, well done hon!!! Just shows what a clever girl you are, that you were able to pass all your exams with the obvious distractions which might have impaired your concentration ;-) Now you can get down to some serious Jake-hunting!
And I agree,Rubes, much as PoP has left me tepid, at best, up to now, when seen as an alternative to the preposterous "2012", PoP with Reece with a "c" is infinitely preferable! Much more desirable still,in my book would, indeed,be Jake as Heathcliff in "Wuthering Heights",WDW, but we can't have everything,sadly...
Getting pre-RDJ goosebumps :-)
Olá, Wet Dark!
I was disappointed with the confirmation of nearly Jake for POP!
But I hope to make success! Jake deserves!
ola Monica :D I really hope it's a big success for Jake (if it happens of course;D)
Hey Nadine - can you imagine studying with Jake so close and after you've met him?! Nope, I couldn't. You did good, Nicole! I reckon PoP would be fab so I do hope it happens - the disaster movie 2012 would have been awful for everybody. I guess we'll know soon enough. This sounds quick moving.
I'm just settling down to watch JR with a G and T - found some booze after all :D
Well done Nicole, on passing your exams!! Hope you have just as much success Jake-spotting :D
Just been watching RDJ on JR :D The bit when he tried on Jonathan's Ironman helmet had me crying with laughter!:D
Just a quick flyby to say that I just saw "Iron Man" with Robert Downey, Jr. It was great! Downey is great as a reluctant hero.
Hi TL! So funny to watch RDJ again - just love that man :D Such an expressive face and extremely entertaining. He must be such a laugh to work with and I think he did Jake good during the Zodiac marathon. They didn't cut out much of Robert's interview, just all the geeky comic stuff.
They did cut out GP's mention of Proof and the stuff about the Financial Times and not going to movies so she came out of it pretty perky. An amazing dress and shoes. But they cut out the rubber band gun :D I think I can see why! Loved watching that.
Hey Paul - I'm so glad you enjoyed Iron man - I'll see that on Sunday. RDJ was an inspirational bit of casting - PoP could be the same...
Good night everyone - it's been a good day :D
Co-stars of Once are now a pair. Missed the Fresh Air interview, will catch up with it when I have time. Convo with friend today: where's the line between performance and reality for actors? changes all the time, Im sure.
In the commentary to Zodiac Jake mentions a scene where he was most comfortable because "that was me" -
Wondering how much, in Donnie, for instance, is Jake - and of course, other films. Was clear to me, in Zodiac commentary, that he was struggling with identification with Greysmith.
On the other hand - Judi Dench, at BAFTAs when asked if in Notes From A Scandal, she was touching upon the bitchy part of her replied - or perhaps her escort replied - that an actor is all people I believe that. I think Heath was willing to explore character and take interesting risks. He did say this interested him.
Wish I could buzz off to see Iron Man at the Mall but my life is not like that. Wish I could watch Jonathan Ross interview - do share y'all who're watching this!
Hey WDW! Yeah, I was thinking they must have done a lot of editing with Gwyneth's interview cos she came across really well:D
Pia, I'm sorry I never thought to record it, but it should be repeated tomorrow so I'll try to remember to record it and put it up somewhere. It's probably on BBC iplayer or whatever it's called but I don't think that works outside of the UK:(
Hi Pia - that's one of the things I noticed during the Zodiac commentary too - that there were a couple of scenes when Jake felt like he was himself, that he could explore aspects of the character without serving simply to move the plot along - and these scenes were I think with RDJ, as well as the first date with Melanie. In films such as DDarko, the character is the movie, and also in BBM I think, but in Zodiac, the script was probably treated as being more important. But I suppose an actor has to get used to confronting unfamiliar aspects of their personality and it can't always be comfortable. I thin Jake likes to be tested like that. I was amused though in the scene in the archive room in Zodiac when Robert said Jake was in an intense rage but he never let it show on film.
But then many of us, I think, as we go through the working day, put on an act to some degree, judging how much of ourselves we can reveal. In acting, there must be so many decisions to be made during the course of a scene or a day. I think Heath enjoyed those risks. I always get the sense with Jake that he enjoys it less but he wants to challenge himself.
Hi TL! It is on again tomorrow night. Gwyneth was very edited, but she came across well :D
Have a good night everyone!
It is indeed a small world. Even though John Krasinski had a very small part in Jarhead, his scene is one of my favorites. "I studied Classics at Dartmouth". I love his expressions there! :D I agree Birdgirl - he's a doll.
Morning everyone - I hope you all have a great weekend :D
Hi Neely - thanks for that! I didn't know that was him :D
I had a brainstorm just now, and I'd like the rest of you to hear me out, please: there have some well-received zombie movies recently ("I am legend," "Shaun of the dead, "Grindhouse," etc.), so audiences are clearly interested in seing the dead come back to life. Enter Sam Hall, who has taken refuge in Mexico with Mom and Dad and Laura. Meanwhile, the heat radiation a freak supernova 100 light years away has reversed the flash-freezing of New York and other locales. All the people who were forzen wake up *as zombies*. The zombies are hungry, so they head south for Mexico. (evillaugh)
(Okay, I'm kidding here, and it would be a very campy movie, but Jake would get to continue his character, who has aged about 5 years in the interim. :-))
G'morning everypeeps. Hope you guys enjoyed RDJ last night: NPR gave the film and esp. RDJ a good review although questioning the moral good of supehero films. Watched Batman Begins last night, and I thot the film had "moral good" - and lovd the ending where the Joker card was turned up. Ive always had a soft place in my heart for Batman stories as Ive always wanted to be a sidekick, like Robin, to a Hero. Ive also wanted to be a Hero. Heroine. BBMT pushed all my buttons, in this respect.
O the H'wood dream factory! But Saturday is "task day" - trash to the dump, and so forth. I must FOCUS
WDW please no more nekkid Jake (Im kidding of course) Throws me for a loop.
See you later, lil darlins. god bless us every peeps.
Afternoon everyone... i turned on the TV and it's all Boris the clown... what a crazy way to start a day in London, we officially now have a clown as mayor... i think programmes likes "have i got news for you" will be busy these days.
back to more happy subject! i watched RDJ a bit last night, what a great guy and he doesn't look like 43 at all... i am still not warming up to Gwynie, but I guess I probably never will.... but I'll still catch Ironman when it comes out on DVD.
oh... i've just noticed that I've never seen Jake in that black dress shirt... what a nice picture :) Despite the disney and bruckheimer bit, I am sure I'll be excited when PoP actually happens. and yeah, a Jake action figure! how about that?
but you know my first thought when i saw the picture of PoP? Can Jake pull off that "straight hair" look? my friend Jimmy was going like "omg. jake getting his hair hot ironed".... i am sure we'll have lots of discussion on the hair subject when that happens :P
have a good day everyday... it's 20 degree and sunny here. I figure it's the best time to go wine-shopping :P
I didn't realise John Krasinski was in Jarhead either - thanks Neely!
And Winterbird, I know, it's just awful about Boris isn't it? :( I really thought that sanity would prevail in the end, but apparently not. It wouldn't be so bad if he was just a clown, but it's the fact that he's an ignorant, arrogant, racist, homophobic, Tory clown that worries me.
I need hot Jake pics to cheer me up!
London has a clown as a mayor? Did anyone notice?
Has anyone seen John Cleese's letter to the Ameriocans informing them that their inability to produce any viable presidential candidates has led to England rescinding Independence? We yanks will have to drive on the *left* side of the road, take tea at 4:00 p.m. every day, and give up stoplights in favour of roundabouts. :-/
Ya Neely,
I remember noticing him in Jarhead. It was one of those Holy Sh*t moments. I absolutely love The
Office.
I totally agree about the black shirt picture. He is smoking hot.
Hope y'all are having a good Saturday. It is a cold gloomy one here. It's a good day to put on some comfy pants and relax with some Jake.
hi everyone :D out Jaking with ruby and anouska and chocolate mousse! Bad news about Boris :( doing a toast for you all and for our boy - back soon xx
Have fun ladies.
Hey Im comfy on a dim dark day with a great cuppa coffee laced with a bit of spirits.
Hi, Paul, how about Donnie who said in his letter to Roberta Sparrow that he's really excited about what comes after he's dead.
And I've always said that I want to be greeted, in the afterlife, by Gilda Ratner saying Welcome To Sat Night Dead.
Also love John Cleese's comments. Hey, I can do left side of the street driving (although the guys at toll booths in Scotland used to crack up when my side view mirror would get ripped off) and roundabouts and four o'clock tea Way to go!
Evening chaps :-) Ok WDW,Rubes and Nouskie, how many fingers am I holding up?....I knew it,blootered already! ;-) I'm sure you're having a good time girls!
I loved seeing RDJ on JR last night and the lovely Michael Aspel. GP wasn't enthralling but nice enough. Must admit I thought Jonathan took the bad language a bit far last night, especially during the GP interview.
Don't get me wrong,I'm ashamed to say that when I lose my rag I can eff and blind with the best of 'em but I wouldn't do it on national TV. Much of the time I find JR amusing and entertaining, but he doesn't seem to have a self-censorship switch. Maybe because he has a multi-million pound contract he thinks he's fire-proof. JR,believe me,telling GP that you'd be happy to f*"& her is not big and it's not clever.
And then, of course, there's Boris. I'm hoping that, for London's sake,he's going to surprise us all and really will try to make life better for ALL Londoners. As an Oxford graduate there is no denying that he's an extremely intelligent man - trouble is intelligence and common sense are not the same thing and often it's common sense that's really needed in high office. Fingers crossed for all of you in the Big Smoke. xxxxx
Oh and just to get things back on topic, yes Jake looks utterly gorgeous in that black dress shirt! Mouthwatering!
Hi there! Anyone for a cosmo? Just getting in the last round. I can count your fingers Nadine! 13? Cheers!
Mmmm cosmo's. I looooovvvvee em.
Drink one for me.
Ummmm Cosmos, my favourite Italian drink. But, now see if you can walk a straight line for at least 8 feet and touch your nose with your little finger ;D We know you're having too much fun with the girls or are you drowning your sorrows about your new court jester..I mean mayor.
I reckon we've slipped through a temporal vortex and are in one of a number of infinite realities where Boris is mayor and Jake is president... oh, Jake isn't? Sorry, my bad! My sincerest sympathy.
At last I took my beautiful boy to see Iron Man. I would urge anyone to go see it on the big screen - it was awesome. I'm so proud and happy for Robert and I've fallen in love with Tony Stark. Robert is Iron Man - no question. He's inhabited the character that was old fashioned and stiff and made him the coolest dude you can't help but love and admire. It's amazing that Stark only had 3 closest friend. Terrence Howard was beautiful and even Gwynny was believable - I didn't hate her... Man those high heels though. Jeff Bridges was amazing, completely transformed himself. Can you guess I loved it!!
********Spoiler*********
If you go see it make sure you stay until the very, very end. Nuff said.
Hi there - back home and busy putting a new post up :D
Sheba thanks so much for that about Iron Man - I'm off to see it tomorrow and thanks for the useful tip :D
Rubes and Anouska - thanks for a lovely day xx
