Brothers delayed for Cannes? 'We can't promote this movie without Jake'

There's more news tonight - take a deep breath. According to Jeff Wells at Hollywood Reporter, the release of Brothers may be delayed to May 2009 and Cannes. Apparently, Jake Gyllenhaal is unable to publicise the film for a December 2008 release due to Prince of Persia commitments and Brothers without Jake Gyllenhaal publicity is not an option. Therefore, Brothers will get a fanfare at Cannes and Jake will lead the campaign.

Producer Mike DeLuca confirmed to HR that MGM had planned to 'open it on 12.4.08, but now they'll be taking it to next May's Cannes Film Festival. Draw whatever conclusions you want, but the implication is that it's not a quality issue as much as a concern that it might suffer against the heavy year-end competition.'

'The decision to hold was basically due to the "crazy full fall for serious movies" this year, he says. "We love Brothers and want to blitz in Cannes, but it's just too crowded this year for a wide fall release and an Oscar campaign." A key factor in the decision, he says, is that costar Jake Gyllenhaal is unavailable for year-end p.r. due to filming on Prince of Persia and "we can't promote this movie without Jake. So Cannes makes most sense. I'm super proud of the movie and a major unveiling on the Cote d'Azur with all cast present is too good to pass up."'

I want to stress that this is still speculation at this stage. Next time I blow out candles on a cake, I'm going to wish for one of Jake's films to be released on the date intended. However, should this turn out to be true, it does mean we will get more of this... That's quite a consolation.

This is the second post tonight. Earlier tonight, I posted PoP creator Jordan Mechner's vision for the swashbuckler.

I loved the v-neck t-shirt post,by the way, but noooooooooooooooooo!

It's just pants, Zodiac! I'm consoling myself with thoughts of sun-kissed Jake on the Croisette. Until that thought works, I'm necking back my bottle of Merlot.

Glad you liked the v-necked t-shirt post :D Sigh...

Oh that's just great! Just as I start venturing back into Jake world, I find we have to wait another year (well, almost) for him to come out of hiding. To be fair, half the fun of a new Jake film is all the promo appearances so I'd rather wait if it means missing out on all that, but I can't believe he didn't have written into his POP contract that he had to have time off to promote Brothers. I always thought that was standard practice? Oh well, let's just hope it's worth the wait...

Thanks for the other post too, btw, WDW:) POP sounds better and better the more I read about it. I must try to have a go at the game now TL Jr has it on her Nintendo DS :)
And thank you so much for the V-neck pics. I've always liked the v-necks, for some reason...;)

You know, this may be good news *ducks out of the way of flying objects* - I'd hate to see what promises to be a great film not get the attention it deserves, and lost in the shuffle of fall movies - plus, we'll get to enjoy Jake promoting the film and see him in Cannes again. They are right, you can't promote a film with Jake in it without Jake! Ah, think of the delayed gratification . . .

PoP is sounding really exciting, and I love v-neck Jake. ;)

Good to see you TL! I did the v-necked post very much with you in mind. I know how much you like them :D Me too :)

After the initial wanting to thump a pillow moment, I've been trying to look on the brightside - and that is Jake in Cannes and there are few more glorious sights than that - truly. And that beats without doubt any release of the film without Jake to publicise it.

I'm surprised that Jake doesn't have time to publicise Brothers written into his PoP contract - in fact, I'm not sure I believe that one. Even Fincher gave Jake time off (reluctantly) for BBM promotion.

But this way, we'll get Brothers in a wave of publicity, with full attention and not as it would be now, with everyone wondering why it's not being pushed. The price to pay is more months without Jake - the upside will be an incredible wave of Jake from next spring onwards until PoP is released at least.

So don't go anywhere, TL!

Hi Bertie! Posting at the same time :D I think you could be right. I think it could be a blessing in disguise. I just wish all these things were thought through properly at the beginning so we wouldn't have that moment of disappointment - it seems to happen a lot! Cannes would be wonderful - and not a treat I'd expected for quite some time as I couldn't see Nailed and PoP being paraded on the Croisette. So, yes, let's look on the bright side :D

hi y'all! sounded to me like this might be good news - it's Jake's film Im most interested in seeing and Id rather not see Jake on talk shows with that mop of smelly hair.

Anonymous said...

I think it's great that the fans are so positive and relaxed and generally fine with this and......

... gnaws table.......

Zodiac said...

Pia, he would wash it wih some organic shampoo, it wouldn't be so smelly;) Think about it,we will have to wait a YEAR for the release of a new film, unless Nailed is released in spring/summer 2009. No amount of smelly hair is worse than this. At least for me.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Chuckle Pia :DD I didn't think we were ever going to have Jake on the chat shows for Brothers in December - I thought the release would be too low key. But this could mean we will get all that we want, just with a pause before. I think he'd have had a haircut by then... (although I'll take Jake with his hair any which way right now :D)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Narcissa! I'm trying to look on the happy side but yes, when I heard the news, I was eating dinner and I immediately lost my appetite. But what can we do but find the bright side?

Hey Zodiac - I know, that's the hard side of all this and that was my first thought. Unless they can rush out Nailed...! We are definitely due some Jake! If they bring out Nailed, that would keep me going for the Brothers fanfare.

twistedlogic said...

Lol Pia, it's not like we would be able to smell Jake's hair through the TV though! And I bet Jake's hair smells lovely anyway;)
Trust you to look on the bright side, WDW:) I'm sure it'll be worth the wait in the end. As someone once said, "If you can't fix it..." ;(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL! I volunteer to smell Jake's hair to let you know if it whiffs or not. I'm selfless like that.

Unfortunately, I have3 a character flaw which means I tend to find the bright side but I was initially gutted and almost threw my leek and cheese and rosemary bake at my laptop. But I do think that I would rather have Brothers with Jake publicising it than Brothers with just Tobey and/or Natalie publicising it, even if it means that we must wait for that most beautiful of all red carpets - Cannes.

Just think on that :D

Good night, Wet Dark!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OMG
I agree with Bertie Knox. Brothers would not have the attention it deserves!

Brothers for Cannes :)

*sorry, just got back. don't have time to write long*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Monica! Yes we have to think of the pleasure we will finally receive when Jake takes the crowds by storm at Cannes - and Jake seems to love Cannes :D

Hey there Winterbird! Hope you had a good trip. Yep, Cannes Jake is a compensation. We just need someone to rush out Nailed so I can get my Jake fix...

twistedlogic said...

Oh hun, looking on the bright side is hardly a character flaw! It's gotta be better than being a pessimistic old cynic like me :( But hey, we've already waited a year for a new film, what's another 7 months?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks TL :) I would wait a lot longer than that, if it meant that everything would be perfect. It;s incredible that Rendition was a year ago now! I can hardly believe that. Time will pass :D

twistedlogic said...

Yeah, before we know it we'll be complaining that it was ages since Brothers was out and we're having to wait for POP. And it'll give you plenty of time to get everything sorted for your trip to Cannes(I bet you've been looking at flights already;))
Speaking of time passing, I'm off to bed in a bit, going to watch some SNIT first cos that never fails when times are hard:)

Nite everyone, speak soon xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Night TL! Time we'll pass and we'll pass it with Jake - give my love to the boys on the mountain. Talk to you later xx

Morning all! Another busy sunny day :)

Hey Nouskie! Cannes Jake is a fine prospect indeed :D

Have a good day everyone!

Thank you WDW for this update, at first I was really disappointed by the news, but thanks to Bertie Knox's and other positive considerations, I'm looking at this more positively too...or at least I'm trying to :-/ but yes, Jake MUST be part of the movie promotion..so...
Right yesterday I checked the movies in competition at the Rome FF, of course no "Brothers" there, not that I really expected it to be in (but strongly hoped..), since Rome FF is a small and minor festival, compared to big ones like Venice or Toronto.
Well anyway it's been and it's going to be a very long wait. Next hope: him presenting an award at the Oscars? Any chance?
Going to check your previous post now :P
Wish you all a lovely day and fingers crossed for some new pics of Jake :P (at least!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Good Girl :D I checked the Rome list too. I'm also trying to look at this positively because the disappointment of a longer wait is definitely more then compensated for by a full load of publicity for the movie, featuring Jake. For a December release we would have had very little, if anything. But now we have Cannes and hopefully all the interviews again :D So I think it really is good news.

Hope everyone's having a good day - a very busy one here, my hair's going grey. Jake! Where are you?!

Xenia said...

Ok...let's see the bright side: they want "Brothers" to be a success and the actors to be rewarded as they deserve. This could mean it's a really good movie.
I'd rather wait than watch it get lost and overlooked like other Jake movies that deserved more attention (i.e. Zodiac or Rendition).
BTW we have no choice, have we? :/

Thanks as always WDW, have a good day. :)

Looking on the bright side, Cannes is a huge buzz for upcoming movies. If they premiere it soon after then hopefully it will do well. I do agree that a movie like this could get lost in the shuffle of fall/winter/Oscar type movies. It would have needed to be promoted back in late summer and given some buzz already for proper attention. JMO. This way the whole cast can fully promote it. And I do want to see Jake in full mode...love that. Plus, instead of putting it all on him I would love to see some Jake/Natalie/Tobey promotion together.

Carol said...

Thanks for the update WDW.

I'm really disappointed with the news about the delayed release for Brothers but I agree with the other posters that it will get maximum exposure and publicity at Cannes.

Hopefully we'll be seeing a lot of Jake in 09:)

Premiering "Brothers" at Cannes could be a nice chance for WDW and Ing and the others to reunite. It's a cheerful, early-Spring trip to look forward to after a horrid winter, as opposed to squeezing "Brothers" into a crazy-busy December holiday season.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Xenia :D I wouldn't want Brothers to get lost either - and I doubt that will happen now :)

Hey Get Real! Agreed. I really do want to see Jake in full red carpet movie star mode. And it will be good to see Natalie involved.

Hi Paul! A spring break on the riviera - perfect :D

I dont care how much fun the guys are maybe having rattling their swords, but I think Jake's working hard for his seven mil and hope he's tucked some money underneath his mattress but frankly I dont think he's the type.

Debate starring the Alaskan snowbilly dingbat tonight, we are all hitting the bars so we don't have to endure this humiliation alone.

Natalie/Tobey/Jake together on red carpet would be springtime indeed.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia :D Don't blame you hitting the bars (I've been doing the same thing tonight :D) - that definitely sounds like something to miss...

I hope everyone's having a good evening. Had a lovely time with Rubes and a bunch of cocktails :D

Maybe Jake will emerge this weekend in NYC with Reese doing Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Just thinking:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Zodiac! Oh it would be so good to see Jake. I reckon he's back working in Pinewood at the moment but it would be great to see him anywhere!

Hey, everyone,
I'm saddened by the Brothers film:(
Was looking forward to an emotional experience of it with alot of tears!:( And I don't do well in theaters with alot of crying from me....
But, I'm going to try to let everyone's positivity here on WDW to make me smile.:/ I'm almost there. Since I've been catching up on posts ((Thanks WDW so much for them)), I think that I will have to retire for the evening with my rum and return tomorrow...I'm feeling quite bummed...G'night...

I'll console myself with Jake's V-neck short and long sleeved shirts...maybe a sweet smile on him will do...yes, I think so for tonight:))

G'night Jaking friends!

Thanks for new info, a little sad that there's no Jake this year at all - just makes me want to see him more. Jake baby, you're taking me all over the world.... Cannes, a strong possibility... it's ok baby, I can wait... *stokes white cat seductively*

Away for the weekend so.... Y'all have fun and behave yourselves until I get back.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Viv! I do hope you're smiling :)

have a good weekend, Sheba :D

Sorry I missed you earlier, Carol!

Hope everyone is having a good day :D
