A good day for the Sarsgaard-Gyllenhaals

The Seagull opened last night at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway to some rave reviews and a standing ovation. One of its leading lights, Peter Sarsgaard, had this to say when it was all over: 'I feel good, I feel great, I feel a little high. It feels a little like when you get into a very minor car accident where no one got hurt and you get that little feeling. The feeling where you go 'ahhh' and you need a drink? That's what I feel like.' Hopefully, at the after party at Sardis, Peter got one.

With Peter on the stage, Maggie Gyllenhaal was in the audience, looking stunning. It is good to read such fine reviews for the whole cast, including Kristin Scott Thomas, Carey Mulligan and Art Malik (whom I saw last month round the corner filming for a television drama). Incidentally, Peter and Carey's film An Education will receive its 'Market premiere' at the American Film Market, which takes place in Santa Monica from 5-12 November.

Do check out this New York Times audio slideshow for the play, which is accompanied by a discussion by Peter himself. The NYT review can be read here. More photos from the evening can be seen here.

However, despite Peter's stage success last night, there is no doubt who is the star of the Sarsgaard-Gyllenhaal household today - Ramona, who has her second birthday today. Happy bithday Ramona! You can bet Ramona will be much in the thoughts of Uncle Jake as he goes about swashing his buckle at Pinewood.

Here's a link to NYTimes rave, and audio commentary of Peter S., who was described as "slyly brilliant". . . including the familiar giggle. http://theater2.nytimes.com/2008/10/03/theater/reviews/03seag.html

Hi everyone!

Thanks for that link, Pia :D I added Peter's audio slideshow to the post as it's fab. Maggie looks lovely and I hope Ramona has a perfect birthday (with trifle) xx

Hi there Xenia :D That is so true - amazing to be a mix of Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard! I absolutely adore those Jake and Ramona pics. I hope you have a good day too :)

Hey Get Real! I hope you get to see the play too. I also hope that Jake has had (or will get this evening) the full rundown on Peter's big night and Ramona's big day :D

I agree that Maggie looks wonderful in that picture. The man right in back of her, who is half-hidden, looks just like my brother. I don't think my brother had planned to go to that play, but if he did, I'll have to ask how he liked it. ;-)

I think that Maggie has a girl-next-door look. This was especially evident in "Mona Lisa Smile" and "Stranger than fiction."

This has an upside and a downside. The upside is that she can have a busy career for the next 50 or 60 years.

The downside is that most girls next door don't always look great. If there are times when Maggie's hairdo or clothing are not especially flattering, she has one priceless ace up her sleeve: acting talent.

Sophie Tucker put it all in perspective many years ago: From ages 1-16, a girl needs good parents. From ages 17-35, she needs good looks. From 36 to 54, she needs a good man. After 55, she needs cash. [We can obviously update this for an actress like Maggi,e and say that from 36 to 54, an actress needs talent. If she's got that, as Maggie does, she will still have it well after she's 55 as well. :-) ]

Oh I'm so thrilled that opening night was such a success for The Seagull and it got such rave reviews - Peter and Kristin look wonderful, as does the always lovely Maggie. Congrats! I really do hope I get to see it.

Happy 2nd birthday to Ramona, and you are right, she's got the hottest uncle in the world! :)

Hi there Paul :D Maggie looks really gorgeous here and even more so because she is so talented, just like that sexy guy of hers. (As for Ms Tucker - a girl can be a lot younger than 55 and need some cash...) Maggie and Jake have fine futures ahead of them :)

Hey Bertie! Be great if you get to see it. Kristen does look lovely, doesn't she? I hope we get to see Hot Uncle Jake very soon :D

Hi Dailing :D More gossip, something we can all do without... Best to take no notice of any of it.

Hope everyone's having a good evening! They're threatening snow in Scotland this weekend - time to head south with the birds...

Hi Monica! I'm so happy for Peter too :) I don't know if my heart could deal with having Jake in the theatre each day but it would be so good to have Jake the centre of attention like this. I hope Ramona is having a lovely birthday :D

I really do not want this escalating into a row - with me in the middle - so, with respect to all, I'm going to delete all these comments and ask you to take deep breaths and focus on the hotness that is Jake instead.

Hey WDW, good for Peter :) I'd love to see him in The Seagull ... (looking forward to Ivanov in London next month).

Hi there Anouska! I'd love to see Peter in the Seagull but I must say that I saw so much Chekhov when I was at University in London that I'm a bit Chekoved out but this does sound like a wonderful production - I wish it had stayed in London though. Hope you're having a good night :)
