At the movies - Jake and Reese see Bruno and a poster for An Education

The day after the night before, a couple of sleepyheads were seen at Beverly Hills' AMC theatre yesterday evening. It seems that Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon were among a number of well know people who chose to see Bruno, which might explain the facial expressions. I wonder what Jake bought at Bose... Many thanks to IHJ for the pictures.

Talk of An Education

Brothers is being regularly listed now as a contender for the coming award season. However, it is not the only film being discussed which is of interest. I'm delighted to see that Peter Sarsgaard's An Education is also getting some buzz and it too now has a poster. Its other star is Carey Mulligan, who also has a role in Brothers, tightening the connection.

Going off topic again...

I stumbled across another filmset today, not once but twice. Despite reports that the recession had killed off ITV's classy detective drama Lewis, the offshoot of Inspector Morse, I can definitely attest to the contrary. Lewis had taken over one ofOxford's scenic colleges, drawing quite a crowd of tourists. At lunchtime I saw Warren Clarke, a much loved and famously grumpy-looking UK character actor...

... and in the evening saw Laurence Fox - Lewis' sidekick, son of James Fox and husband of a very lucky Billie Piper. I watched the filming standing next to the creator of Inspector Morse, Colin Dexter - an unassuming and very modest gentleman. This was a thrill for me as I've read every single one of his novels.

A reminder of the previous time I saw filming for Lewis in Oxford.

Bruno, eh? *snickers*

I love "An Education" poster. Very... erm... appropriate. Peter looks good. They should hire a local to do the marketing *hints hints*

was it "dress down" day in LA yesterday?

*snickers*

Hey Winterbird :D Maybe they ended up in there by mistake, having tried to see something else? I'd prefer to have my fingernails pulled out...

The poster looks great! I love it - Peter and Carey look amazing. IT's opening in October, we have to see it :D

I'm just grateful Jake has changed his shoes :D For once, I like the hat! Note how I'm ignoring the trousers...

I am not approving this "just been sitting on the couch all day" lazy trousers!

Bruno could be a blast - if you want it with your mates! I don't know what Jake's intention was... ?!?!?

Should I take my girlfriend to see Bruno

Good night, wet dark!
You saw Bruno? Here only in August!

Peter for a long time deserve the recognition of awards.
He's fantastic in so many movies!

OMG Winterbird, that article's so funny - I always enjoyed reading that column when I commuted to London. I still don't want to see Bruno - although I'd see it with Jake obviously...

Hi there Monica :D Bruno's opened here but I'll leave it for other people to watch. I would really love Peter to be nominated for a big award and get some of the recognition he deserves - he's a great actor. It would be strange indeed if he and Jake were up for the same awards.

LOL that article about taking your GF to Bruno was a riot! I think it's probably spot on. I'd suggest Public Enemies too; I found it so romantic it almost brought me to tears.

Jake buying speakers perhaps? :)

Morning everyone!

Hi there Anon :D It was very funny - I thik Ice Age 3 would be more romantic than Bruno. Mr WDW craves Bose speakers...

OMG that's too cool for words, Twitter Search :D I dream of Atti too (and Atti's dad). Thanks for finding that!

Oooooh Warren Clarke - I love him. I miss Morse. Maybe this is a Xmas special or summat?

What were Jake and Reese doing wasting their time at Bruno???

I am a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen and his creations but this movie is such a letdown. First half an hour is classic Borat style humour and it goes down the tubes after that:( Myself and a friend had really been looking forward to seeing this and we were bitterly disappointed.

BTW Reese gets a mention in the movie:)

I am looking forward to seeing An Education. Hope Peter will get recognition for his talent at last with this one.

Have a great day:)

They saw Bruno, lol, I do want to see that. ;)

Great to see An Education poster! And your pics WDW of the filming are always great to see. :)

Hi TD! I love Warren Clarke too :D I think they're filming another series of Lewis, which is good news. They'll be around here for weeks.

Hi Carol! Thanks for the review of the film. I'm not a Sacha fan at all although I can appreciate he's clever. I wonder what Jake thought of it. I hope that for Peter too.

Hey Get Real :D Jake and Reese saw it for us so that we don't need to ;) I'm so glad you liked my pics. The downside of me never going anywhere without a camera is it means others have to look at them!

I hope everyone's having a good day - almost home time and no gym :D

"Maybe they ended up in there by mistake, having tried to see something else? I'd prefer to have my fingernails pulled out..." [WDW]

Your instincts are right, WDW. By all means, do not see "Bruno." I saw it, and I'm still scratching my head wondering if some of the things I saw would be done by anyone on this planet (or any other). Is there really a naive young Austrian (gay, straight, or other) who would have no clue that mentioning Hitler in public is a bad thing? And who is the target audience for this movie? I understand the satiric purpose in showing the vapidity (and savagery) of celebrity culture by having parents so desperate to get their children into films that they would agree to anything a producer asked for, but I'm sure someone could have made it funnier than this movie did. It's a parade of grotesqueries that don't really add up to much.

But Jake certainly had good reasons for seeing it, as one gay icon seeing the work of another.
(This is not a commentary on the orientation of Jake or Sascha, just an acknowledgment that "Brokeback Mountain" and "Bruno" are both about the state of gay consciousness in the decade so far.)

I did think it was funny that Bruno would mistake Ron Paul for Ru Paul, and that he would get Hamas and Hommus mixed up. The film had a few decent laughs, but then so did "Team America," which I would also not recommend.
