It might not be a Sunday, my usual day for Brokeback posts, but after a stormy day of thunder, lightning and flooding rain (seriously, TDAT had nothing on today), I'm in the mood to wallow in Jake Gyllenhaal reminiscing about the choices - conflicts - that have shaped his career, leading him to Jack Twist.
An interview from the Hartford Courant, published on Christmas Day 2005. '"In every creative thing, I have an initial instinctual response... When I read this, and knowing Ang Lee was going to make it, I thought I had to do it. Then I thought about it some more, but I had no fear about it."'
'Although it is Ledger who is being talked up as an Oscar nominee, Gyllenhaal provides the story's more obvious emotional center. Both men pursue conventional lives by marrying and having children. The softer Gyllenhaal has one toe of his boot peeking out of the closet. He seeks paid male companionship south of the border and has other dalliances, while the tension of desire stays coiled in Ledger's jaw throughout. The pair's passion evolves into a 'Same Time, Next Year' rendezvous in the woods. It's a furlough from society's expectations on the pretense of a fishing trip.'
'"I don't believe necessarily that these two characters are gay... They have a homosexual relationship, but I don't know if they're gay." Reminded that Jack constantly seeks relationships with men, the actor backs off. "I think that's true in the story but that's not how I thought about it... I think he's just somebody who's dying for that same connection, like when we look for somebody who looks likes the person we just broke up with when they've broken our heart. He's looking for someone who feels the same, like when Ennis turns his wife around and has sex like he would with Jack."'
'Gyllenhaal stares out at the smog draping the skyline. "You could argue that my character is openly gay. I feel like he's having a more literal response to the love affair." The conversation turns toward the belief in some circles that everyone is bisexual on some level, one of the notions bandied about since the film knocked out audiences at Toronto and Venice festivals last fall. "I don't think so... I think that relationships are relative and sexuality is relative. Everybody has different interests and perversions. Everybody's different. I think what this movie does is deconstruct any idea of sameness. What's similar in all of us is that we're different."'
'All three of the principals -- Lee, Gyllenhaal and Ledger -- sought redemption in Brokeback. Lee's attempt to imbue 2002's The Hulk with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon artistry failed critically and financially. Ledger (A Knight's Tale) has said he deliberately tried to tank his career so he could rebuild it on his own terms. And Gyllenhaal found his try at blockbuster filmmaking on The Day After Tomorrow unsatisfying. "I always have conflicts... Whatever happens in the process of making the movie, as long as it's a collaboration and, even if there's fighting or whatever, as long as everyone is in, that's OK. Chris Cooper once told me, 'Don't regret anything in the process because that's all that you have as an actor.'"'

Thank you for another wonderful BBM post. You know, as gorgeous as young Jack is in the first picture, it's the older Jack in the last scene with Ennis that I want to take into my arms and confort. Jake was so good in this whole scene, so believable. Even with the awful parka and that pornstache, he really made me feel Jack's pain and resentment. That's good acting! :D

I'm so glad you liked it, Olympia, thanks for saying so :) Your comment is very interesting, it makes me think about which of Jake's Jacks is the Jack that sums him up for me. And I think I agree with you - it's that older Jack. Driven to distress, hopelessness. How we felt that pain - Jake deserves every accolade he received and more for how those scenes made us feel. A great actor :)
Maybe we all have our Jake scenes that speak to each us - my very favourite scene with Jack and Ennis is the harmonica scene after the sheep have been retrieved. I don't know why it is but I wish I could have stopped time at that point.
You know, I am trying to decide which Jack and Ennis scene I love the most and I just can't. I love all of them for different reasons and details. When I watch the movie, I anticipate each and savour it, especially those on the mountain.
When I saw BBM in the theaters,I always had the feeling I was missing details because there was so much to take in (even after multiple viewings) so when I got my DVD, I watched the movie one time while only watching Jack when he was in a scene, and one time only watching Ennis. It was great, I caught a lot of little things I had missed. I also "watched it" with my eyes closed, with only sound. That was fantastic too.
This feeling I have of wanting to confort and protect older Jack, I have it also for young Ennis. He was so scared and lonely.
Olympia
That's amazing, Olympia, that you did that - watching each scene for each character. But I can see why. In the campfire scene early on when Ennis tells Jack he's looking forward to marrying Alma and getting his own place, I'm so torn between whose expression to watch.
I remember the first time I saw BBM - all innocent, all unexpecting - I fell for Jake so deeply when he shuffled his boots waiting to go into the cabin aith Ennis. I thought that this was the most handsome man I had ever seen on the screen. And I've seen enough movies through the years to realise that's no small thing. But then the story grabbed me and it was Jack and Ennis that made me sit in my car for quite some time after the screening before I drove home to change my life.
So you're right, there are so many scenes which matter for different reasons. Some make me smile, some make me despair. I know that wanting to comfort feeling very well indeed.
Such an interesting discussion, thank you, Olympia *)It's so good to know that we all felt like this.
You're welcome, I really enjoyed it too!
It's time for me to go home now so I'll be wishing you a good night. :)
Olympia
Good night :)
Oh Lordy,WDW, a beautiful Brokeback post, nothing more calculated to bring me out of the woodwork ;-)
I echo so much of what you and Olympia have said. After all this time, Brokeback has still got us good and forever will have. I've only managed to watch it once since Heath died, have struggled to watch any of Heath's films, but when I next get an oasis in the frenzy of RL I really must answer the ache for the exquisite agony of our favourite film and allow Jack and Ennis, and Jake and Heath,to make me fall in love with them all over again and break my heart for them too.
I'm making a mental note to use the "Olympia method" at some stage too and watch the film concentrating either totally on Jack or on Ennis - there are surely more jewel-like moments to discover, rendered yet more poignant by time and the tricks life has played on us all.
I know exactly what you mean,WDW, about wanting to make time stand still at certain points in the film to preserve and hang on to the all too brief snatches of unfettered love they found together and what might have been.
And in real life, sometimes I wish we could have all hit freeze-frame around the time of the "Brokeback Baftas"...thus the film could not have been robbed of the Oscar, we could not have been robbed of Heath, a beautiful person and wonderful actor, and Jake....well,who knows? But time marches relentlessly on. As John Lennon once said,"Life is what happens while you're making other plans" ;-)
Love to you,WDW,and all WDWers xxx
(((Nadine))) I'd do Brokeback posts more often if I thought they'd bring you out of the woodwork - so good to see you xx
And you quote John Lennon... combining BBM, Jake and Heath, Jack and Ennis, and John lennon, all in one go - woah! That's a heady, wonderful mix. Yes, freezeframe - if only we had it. Love to you xx
Sigh, another beautiful Brokeback post. I always love hearing the impressions of the actors and others associated with the making of this masterpiece of film. It's one of my favorite films I have ever seen. I really can't choose my favorite Jack scenes, depending on how I feel when I watch it, it could be any number of them. The dozy embrace gets me every time tho, gotta have a tissue handy. Same for Heath's scenes, but when he gets out of the truck in the beginning, that's always awe inspiring for me. I love the sight of Jack in that faded blue shirt - he's exquisitely handsome, when he meets Ennis the first time. I may have to watch again. :)
This is a wonderful article. I will forever be grateful to Heath and Jake for taking on the roles of Ennis and Jack and were fearless.

Good night, wet dark!
I'm always happy to see a post from BBM. It seems strange, but I never stop thinking about this movie.

Jake and Heath were great. hey were perfect for their characters.
I remember seeing a video where Heath spoke: Jake gave to us a incredible performance.
Wise words of Chris Cooper.
That's a great interview. Thanks for posting and reminding, WDW. *)
Still haven't decided if I'm ever going to able to go back up on that mountain (too emotional about Heath), but it's nice to be reminded of what it felt like.
Good morning everyone! The morning after the Deluge! We're definitely due a bit of summer now.
Thanks Anon :) I don't think I'll ever forget that first moment with we saw Jake as Jack. I was expecting my crush - TDAT Sam - and I felt like I got hit by a train.
Sweetpea, I'm so glad you liked the article :)
Morning Monica! I always liked how Jake and Heath were always so proud of the other's performance.
Thanks Anna *) There's no rush - it'll wait for you :)
Have a great day everyone :D

Me too. I still can't watch it. :(
