Every war is different, every war is the same
The yellow sun, well it took the hand
Of a country boy to a city in a far off land
We made no mark, no shadow at all,
On the ancient holy streets, where I learned to crawl.
I'm 25 and trying to stay alive
In the corner of the world with no clear enemies to fight.
It's hot as hell, we're like butter on toast,
But there's no army in this world that can fight a ghost.
At 21 I was born a son, and on that day I knew I could kill,
To protect the ones, we put bullets in guns,
Or anything it takes, to take a life.
Until it's still.
A song that we will hear in Brothers, Winter, reminds me that Jake Gyllenhaal's brave movie choices over the years are to be celebrated. Although we've yet to see some projects come to fruition, or even, once made, to the screen, Jake has taken a mighty leap into the fantasy world into which Disney leads us, he may sing and dance on the screen to millions, he has made love to a cowboy, he's put himself in bootcamp, he's addressed extraordinary rendition - he's even been willing to suffer the Davids - O Russell and Fincher.
With Brothers, there is every reason to believe that we will have another film to make us even prouder. Its excellence is hinted at by the fact that its soundtrack includes such a song as Winter, a winter that's 'hot as hell'.
Winter isn't on the No Lines on the Horizon album, available from today in the UK. But, if you buy the limited edition, you will be able to download many extras, and these include the song and video to Winter. Soon we will see the brother with the tattoo...

Brothers AND Nailed at Cannes? It's only a matter of time...
An article by Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere today suggests that Brothers might not be the only one of Jake's movies to open in Cannes - how about Nailed as well?! See the list here.

A book signing (and beer tasting) this week by a New York Yankees fan and chronicler was attended by Tab Hunter, one of the actors from the original 1958 movie musical Damn Yankees. This 'Yankee by Proxy' told 'the crowd that a remake is in the works starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the Yankee and Jim Carrey as the Devil'.
Jake's singing and dancing credentials have been well documented here, but, following the disappointment of the Moulin Rouge auditions and the triumph of SNL (not to mention the Ellen birthday wiggle), a musical was just a matter of time for Jake.
Back in January 2006, Jake was awarded the Desert Palm Achievement-Actor Award at the Palm Springs Festival by no less a figure than Peter Sarsgaard himself. Peter probably knows better than almost anyone the entertainer that lives inside Jake's heart, and he had this to say in his introduction for his friend:
'"First, I want to say some nice things about Jake... He's got great hair. An amazing head of hair. And the thing about "Jarhead" is that he shaved it all off! Also, Jake is a fantastic singer and I think it's only a matter of time before you get to hear him sing. And I will dance,” said Sarsgaard, doing some suave hustle steps. "So you gotta sing, Jake, if I dance. Let's get this party started!"'
After Jake's rendition of Night Fever, despite having admitted to some stage fright before: '“Wow! Okay, let’s get raucous!," said Gyllenhaal, when he finished. “Listen, I’ve already played a gay cowboy. If I do a musical number, people will really start to question me. So I’ll stay away from music for a while but don’t think that it's not beating deep, deep in my veins. Very deep.”'
There also seemed to be a shout out to Jake's future Parkour prowess - who'd have thought he meant these words literally... “films take me to places I never thought I would get to, and over walls that I never thought I could get over. When I think about that it's just — I dunno — I forgot.”
Bizarre indeed
And the winner of the Most Batty 'Story' of the year so far goes to.... (envelope rustling sounds) The Sun - for this. I know M&S is good, but is it '8,000 mile round trip' good?

Parkour! Jake Gyllenhaal hints at what's in store
Remember this description of the original Prince of Persia script? 'Parkour is finally going to be given a worldwide audience with Prince of Persia. Because of the incredible athleticism and shape you have to be in to practice Parkour, I would think that narrows down the choices to play Prince of Persia’s lead character – DASTAN.' Well, here, reminding us - should we ever need it - that we are in for a treat next summer, is Jake Gyllenhaal modelling a PoP memento.

Bedhead Jake needs coffee, Peets 27 February
The net might be buzzing at the prospect of an all singing, all dancing, all baseball playing Jake Gyllenhaal in Damn Yankees - hot on the heels of his hip hop video debut - but yesterday (27 February) Jake focused on what really matters: getting a coffee at favourite haunt Peets in Santa Monica. Or is it a nice cup of tea? Yet again, Jake gives us cause to celebrate the demise of the beanie.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey to star in musical Damn Yankees!
Breaking News! According to Variety, Jake Gyllenhaal is to star with Jim Carrey in the film musical Damn Yankees! All the signs have indicated that Jake has a musical in him and this sounds like a big one - who knows, it may even come out on time...
And they say: 'New Line Cinema is playing ball with Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal on "Damn Yankees," attaching both actors to star in a contemporized film transfer of the classic musical. Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel are set to write the script. The musical is being produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the duo behind New Line's musical "Hairspray"; a sequel to that film is in the works.'
'"Damn Yankees," which bowed on Broadway in 1955 and won seven Tony Awards, focuses on Joe Boyd, a happily married middle-aged man whose devotion to a hapless pro baseball team prompts him to make a Faustian bargain with the devil to help the team. He's transformed into slugger Joe Hardy, in exchange for Boyd's soul. Boyd can break the deal, but the deadline occurs during the World Series. For good measure, the devil engages Lola, a gorgeous lost soul, to seduce the slugger and seal his fate. The plan is for Carrey to play the devil, and Gyllenhaal to play Boyd. It's the first musical for each.'
'The producers tried but struck out on a version of "Damn Yankees" five years ago at Miramax, where they made "Chicago." The rights lapsed after Harvey Weinstein exited that studio. After two years of rights negotiations, "Damn Yankees" is moving forward with Toby Emmerich's New Line. The trick is finding a balance that retains the show's classic tunes like "(You Gotta Have) Heart" and "Whatever Lola Wants," while injecting a contemporary feel on a musical that is firmly rooted in the 1950s.'The intention is to get a script from Ganz and Mandel before meeting directors, and actresses who'll want to play Lola.'
Early days but maybe the time will come when we'll be dancing and singing along with Jake in the theatres. So, how about Anne Hathaway for Lola?

Jamie and Jake together again - the premiere of the Blame It video
And now, at last, here is the video to Jamie Foxx's Blame It, featuring one very cool Jake Gyllenhaal. Of course, while in my opinion, the video features too much man with a panda head and not enough Jake, it's good to see Jake in this kind of company, red lights and all. Next time I'll watch it with the sound on... (only kidding!).
