Jake Gyllenhaal on the Beeb, Zwick and Fincher on what audiences want, and Jack and Ennis, a highlight of the last decade

This new BBC interview with Jake Gyllenhaal proves three things a) Jake only has to say 'Really? really?' and the most hardened interviewer will wilt and whimper; b) the Dorchester has lovely tea services and c) the BBC should most certainly know how to spell G-Y-L-L-E-N-H-A-A-L by now, ok Auntie Beeb? Thanks to CBS we have an embeddable version. Otherwise, you can see it on the BBC.

Love and Other Drugs opened in the UK on 29 December and, despite this being the season for big family movies (eg. Litte Fockers, Narnia and Gulliver's Travels), it was the third biggest taker at the UK box office, which is testament, I think, to the appeal of Jake and Anne Hathaway together. Congratulations are due (and hopefully will be rewarded with more movies featuring this partnership).

Despite the success of Love and Other Drugs, Ed Zwick is part of an interesting article in the Telegraph today that examines what we the audience wants from our movie-going experience (after all, it's certainly not a cheap activity) and what directors want to give us. While some, such as Zwick, argue that the biggest movies now are not so much about good character acting as a dazzling effect, others, like David Fincher, put it that the role of the director is to make the audience feel uncomfortable - to challenge what we expect. This is not a world away from Jake's oft-voiced creed: 'It’s important for me to make choices that make people feel uncomfortable'.

An intriguing argument, although my own opinion is that it depends how often you're able to go to the cinema... If you're only able to go a couple of times a year, you may want something a little more escapist. However, if you're fortunate to go frequently, as I do, then bring it on.

We are in a new decade and so amongst the reviews of the Noughties is this article by the LA Times that considers the top film characters of the last ten years. It's of no surprise to me that among the list is Jack and Ennis:

'The tent. The look. Ennis and Jack (the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, respectively) struggled to maintain a forbidden relationship in "Brokeback Mountain," which won Oscars and racked up box office dollars. The lead actors' performances bled into mainstream consciousness as Jack's line "I wish I knew how to quit you" entered the general vernacular.'

I like to think that in another ten years, when critics look back on the twenty tens, that there's another landmark role by Jake to cherish. I think it's very possible. One at least.

Wonderful pics of Jake and David Fincher at Eden Roc, near Cannes, 2007, thanks to IHJ.

what a wonderful interview. I saw Oct Sky over the weekend and watched the extras and they interviewed Jake and he has the same way of explaining a movie, that laugh and fun side, as he did in 1999. Of course he's filled out since he was in his late teens :D

Loved the pics with David F and for me BBM is the highlight of the decade hands DOWN. And will live on as a classic throughout the ages

Great post, WDW! I didn't have time to finish the article from the Telegraph, and I'm anxious to as the topic of what do movie viewers want/expect/end up with is fascinating to me.

It's wonderful that LAOD is doing well outside of North America; it might just prove (once again) that audience enjoyment of any given movie is tied to cultural influences. That's another reason the "dazzling effects" overshadow more character-driven stories - there is much less of a language barrier when the movie is all about visuals with a very simple story. In the end it all comes down to money, doesn't it? A worldwide blockbuster like Avatar will spawn pale imitations left and right in an attempt to make the rich even richer...

Oh yes, Jack and Ennis! I agree with Sweetpea - BBM is a classic that will flourish throughout time. And I think Jake has a few more timeless classics in him. We'll see!

Hi Sweetpea! It's such a lovely side to Jake and it's do clear in this interview. And It's great to hear critics remind everyone of Jack snd Ennis :)

Hey Susan! It is such a fascinating question abd I live seeing Zwick and my favourite director Fincher in the sane article.

I think audiences are often let down with so called RomComs, but not by Jake and Anne. I'm not surprised this is doing so well over here. Makes me happy though!

Hi!
Thank you for that rich post - WDW.
BBC interview is funny and very enjoyable. Jake looks wonderful. This look suits him the most. He's "really, really" cute :) He could really break woman's heart with this one word and his smile.

I never thought about BBM as a classic, but it really is. Unforgettable. I was doing many gifs lately from screen caps of that movie and it amazed me how beautiful and memorable were those pictures. And it shows when you watch the movie. Those pics together with the great music, certain slowness, cowboy's language and accent, loneliness of characters, mountains and amazing, heartbreaking theme of the movie plus great montage plus unforgettable, wonderful acting, especially Jake's and Heath's - created a classic for me.
Nr 1 in my heart.

Hi Mermon! I love this look on Jake. Perfect. And totally agreed about BBM. Without BBM everything would have been so different. I love your gifs!

Hi again!
I'm also glad that British like LAOD.
In Australia 23 of December LAOD was still on third place in box office.
I read some British reviews, they are mixed like in USA, so well that audience likes it.
In two days we have People's Choice Awards (5th of January). Let's see how Jake and POP will do.

The audience definitely seems to like it, Mermon :) I'm looking forward to the People's Choice Awards (althought there never seems much rhyme or reason behind the choices!) I wonder if Jake will be there! It'd be great to see him. I do miss him. And PoP is definitely worth celebrating - people continue to buy and enjoy the DVD!

Gah, what a lovely interview. And he looks hotter than hot in it. Can't think of anyone else who would shine in a beige environment wearing a beige sweater and pink shirt... Kudos, gorgeous. And congrats on LAOD being #3! Just a few more days till it finally arrives here!!!

"Anne has these big eyes, hasn't she?" "Well, not bigger than mine." *lol* How could anyone's eyes ever be bigger than his heavenly blues?! ;-)

I like that thought that 10 years from now there will be other important stories Jake has been part of. He for sure is an amazing story teller, I could listen to (and watch ;)) him endlessly.

Great post! Love the BBC interview and that "really? really?" - wilt is right!! Glad to hear the Brits are enjoying LAOD. It's honestly going to be strange when the PR for this movie finally ends (and sad as it's been so great). It's been a part of our daily on line reading/viewing for so, so long now.

And that mention of Jack and Ennis...sigh. That makes me want to smile and cry at the same time. 5 years of this - I've given up asking if it's ever going to end because the answer is obvious.

Looking forward to whatever we're going to see next from Jake. Thanks for all the updates WDW!

:-)

Good morning everyone! Back at work - aaaggghh!

Morning Lady Ekster - not long now! I'll go and see it again tomorrow after work :D

Hi there BBMISwear :-) It's going to be so strange. I'm glad it won't be long before the SC publicity but it's going to be tough without regular doses of Jake and Anne :D And we need Jake to make lots of movies fast!

And yep, five years on now for Brokeback - these five years have been so wonderful and jack and Ennis are amongst the biggest infuences in my life. It's nice to think about them.

Have a good day everyone!

It's funny to see the giant David Fincher resigning to Jake's playfulness ;)

Lovely pics!

And of course, Jack and Ennis forever.

Hi WDW...
So great to hear that LAOD is doing so well in UK, hope it will too in S'pore...
And I'm so glad that Brokeback has become a movie classic after all this year, they even remembered as Ennis and Jack, not just Jack or just Ennis.
I haven't been able to watch the vids since yesterday, for I'm on my vacation now, I miss Jake already:'(, and today's vid seems like a lot fun... :(
Anyway thanks for the posts WDW!

Hi Winterbird! Love those pictures of Jake and David - amongst my very favourites :D

Hey Serene! Have a wonderful holiday! It's so powerful how Jack and Ennis are known together - not even a surname is necessary.
