Jake Gyllenhaal in spandex - out with Austin Nichols, 5 March

It is a widely known fact that you cannot have enough of Jake Gyllenhaal in spandex - in that sense he's a bit like marmite on toast. Here, with many thanks to IHJ, we have pics of Jake out cycling today in Brentwood with old and hot pal Austin Nichols (5 March).

Yesterday, Jake was back at that favourite haunt of his - The Medical Centre - in order to look hot in a new jacket.

Many thanks to IHJ for the hot pics - and many thanks to Ruby for a wonderful evening!

Jake Gyllenhaal's innocent smile

For someone who once described himself as looking like a tube of toothpaste, it's no wonder that Jake Gyllenhaal is a pinup for dental surgeons. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has announced its annual list of perfect celebrity smiles and there at the top of the 'innocent smile' category is Jake. I must admit, I raised one eyebrow for an instant - I have clearly been looking at Jake's smile through blinkers because 'innocent' was not an adjective that had occured to me in connection with Jake's heart searing, gut clenching, eye piercing, leg wobbling smile. I have, therefore, set myself the task of finding an innocent smile, and so this smiley post is full of such pictures.

A smile expert wrote a guide to the perfect smile: "Raise cheeks upwards to squeeze the lower eyelids - Allow the lips to widen, giving a rounded smile - Look the person in the eye and raise your eyebrows slightly - Run a fun, happy memory through your mind to give your smile genuine warmth - Reveal both top and bottom sets of teeth to make the smile more genuine.' This post includes pictures of Jake running that fun, happy memory through his mind.

In People, a co-star of Jake whom, as far as I can tell, never co-starred with Jake, except on the cutting room floor, replied to the 'What makes him sexy' question: "Definitely his smile... He has that cute little-boy smile." That would be an innocent smile. I'm going to include the rest because it includes two of my all-time favourite Jake quotes: '"I like to cook," he says. "Wherever there's good food, there's good people. As my mom says, 'Good cooks never lack friends.'" (Especially if they're hungry). "I want a lot of kids. Two or four. Not six. It's torture after four." So what's up with three?

But back to the smiles of innocence - the tongue poking out obviously affects the innocence scale, so just ignore that.

More innocent smiles...

So now, turn up the volume and smile along with Jake...

'I like your shoes' - keeping pace with Jake

If it had not been for the hoodie hood being up (clearly a sartorial no-no on one so hot), it is possible that we may never have noticed that Jake Gyllenhaal was following in the footsteps of generations of British men who genuinely believe that socks and sandals go together like pie and chips. I am willing to give Jake the benefit of the doubt in that it may have been unintentional but, clearly, Jake's stay in England for much of last year may have had a detrimental impact on his clothing acumen. Fortunately, it only appears to have affected Jake from the ankles down.

With the guilt of the nation heavy in my heart for making Jake feel compelled to twin his flipflops/sandals/beachshoes with off-white ankle socks, I thought I would explore the lower reaches of Jake's wardrobe to uncover the footwear that lies within (carefully placed and paired or carelessly tossed and scattered?). You won't be surprised to hear that this meant throwing to one side almost every single pair of Nike known to man, certainly those with the most shox. I have considered Jake's Nike 'thing' before (sharing this addiction myself, albeit on a less than moviestar level) and so the lack of Nike in this post does not reflect its prominence in Jake's cupboards.

It is worth mentioning that Jake's Gyllenhaalics are not alone in having a healthy interest in how Jake keeps his feet dry. Robert Graysmith had a fascination - nay, an obsession - for Jake's shoes, as Jake warily reflected in an article about Zodiac: 'Occasionally, he would glance at things on me, and I'd think, what's he looking at? And he'd say things like, 'I like your shoes. Where did you get them? I had a pair of shoes like that once. What store did you get them from?' And then about an hour into it I realised if I didn't answer a question that he wanted an answer for, he would just throw it back in a different way. He was incessant, almost an obsessive journalist. He wouldn't let things lie.'

If Jake had been in the UK for a little longer, no doubt we would have had enjoyment from Jake in wellies (green, perhaps, if he spent too much time in the home counties). As it is, we must instead enjoy the sight of Jake modelling 2010's winter boots of choice - Persian style.

But when the situation calls for it, Jake knows how to wear the finest dress shoes, sacrificing his crocs and comfort for style and crutches. Jake does persist, on a regular basis, in taunting us with 'The Felt Clogs', presumably because their comfortability makes up for everything else...

...but other old familiars have become favourites - the scuffed boots, for example.

While the next couple of years holds the promise of Jake in dancing shoes and baseball boots, we have still the pleasure of cowboy leather and army beetlecrushers to enjoy.

As Jake clearly can't please us all, all of the time, maybe it's just best to go without.

Jake models socks in Brentwood, 2 March

Good to start the day with new pictures! Here are Jake and Reese going out for coffee in Brentwood yesterday (2 March). I have only one thing to say - don't look at Jake's feet...

Many thanks to IHJ for the pictures - you can see many more there.

Every war is different, every war is the same

The yellow sun, well it took the hand
Of a country boy to a city in a far off land
We made no mark, no shadow at all,
On the ancient holy streets, where I learned to crawl.

I'm 25 and trying to stay alive
In the corner of the world with no clear enemies to fight.
It's hot as hell, we're like butter on toast,
But there's no army in this world that can fight a ghost.

At 21 I was born a son, and on that day I knew I could kill,
To protect the ones, we put bullets in guns,
Or anything it takes, to take a life.
Until it's still.

A song that we will hear in Brothers, Winter, reminds me that Jake Gyllenhaal's brave movie choices over the years are to be celebrated. Although we've yet to see some projects come to fruition, or even, once made, to the screen, Jake has taken a mighty leap into the fantasy world into which Disney leads us, he may sing and dance on the screen to millions, he has made love to a cowboy, he's put himself in bootcamp, he's addressed extraordinary rendition - he's even been willing to suffer the Davids - O Russell and Fincher.

With Brothers, there is every reason to believe that we will have another film to make us even prouder. Its excellence is hinted at by the fact that its soundtrack includes such a song as Winter, a winter that's 'hot as hell'.

Winter isn't on the No Lines on the Horizon album, available from today in the UK. But, if you buy the limited edition, you will be able to download many extras, and these include the song and video to Winter. Soon we will see the brother with the tattoo...

But summer sings in me no more.'

Brothers AND Nailed at Cannes? It's only a matter of time...

An article by Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere today suggests that Brothers might not be the only one of Jake's movies to open in Cannes - how about Nailed as well?! See the list here.

On with the post...

A book signing (and beer tasting) this week by a New York Yankees fan and chronicler was attended by Tab Hunter, one of the actors from the original 1958 movie musical Damn Yankees. This 'Yankee by Proxy' told 'the crowd that a remake is in the works starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the Yankee and Jim Carrey as the Devil'.

Jake's singing and dancing credentials have been well documented here, but, following the disappointment of the Moulin Rouge auditions and the triumph of SNL (not to mention the Ellen birthday wiggle), a musical was just a matter of time for Jake.

Back in January 2006, Jake was awarded the Desert Palm Achievement-Actor Award at the Palm Springs Festival by no less a figure than Peter Sarsgaard himself. Peter probably knows better than almost anyone the entertainer that lives inside Jake's heart, and he had this to say in his introduction for his friend:

'"First, I want to say some nice things about Jake... He's got great hair. An amazing head of hair. And the thing about "Jarhead" is that he shaved it all off! Also, Jake is a fantastic singer and I think it's only a matter of time before you get to hear him sing. And I will dance,” said Sarsgaard, doing some suave hustle steps. "So you gotta sing, Jake, if I dance. Let's get this party started!"'

After Jake's rendition of Night Fever, despite having admitted to some stage fright before: '“Wow! Okay, let’s get raucous!," said Gyllenhaal, when he finished. “Listen, I’ve already played a gay cowboy. If I do a musical number, people will really start to question me. So I’ll stay away from music for a while but don’t think that it's not beating deep, deep in my veins. Very deep.”'

There also seemed to be a shout out to Jake's future Parkour prowess - who'd have thought he meant these words literally... “films take me to places I never thought I would get to, and over walls that I never thought I could get over. When I think about that it's just — I dunno — I forgot.”

Bizarre indeed

And the winner of the Most Batty 'Story' of the year so far goes to.... (envelope rustling sounds) The Sun - for this. I know M&S is good, but is it '8,000 mile round trip' good?
