Jake Gyllenhaal on Brokeback 'I was not ever afraid' and Jake's admiration for Ryan Gosling

We've been talking here about some of the other roles that Jake Gyllenhaal may find for himself in the future apart from those he takes on in front of the cameras. But, in this newly discovered video, in which Jake accepts a Human Rights Campaign for 'Leadership in the Service to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community' for his work in Brokeback Mountain, Jake reveals with great emotion what he wants to achieve from his role as actor in these years. He also tells us with enormous conviction of his faith in Brokeback Mountain: 'I was not ever afraid'.

Jake tells us how proud he is of this award, and his family's earlier ACLU civil liberties award, and that he can't say enough 'how much I will earn this - because I haven't yet, but I will earn this over the years, I hope'. And how flattered he is that 'you've entrusted this with me in the hope that I will continue to do movies like this and hopefully work to make sure that equality is something that we take for granted one day'. Jake wasn't able to accept the honour in person because he was tied to the Zodiac set at the time.

Talking of great performances, Nathaniel Rogers mentioned today that Jake spoke of an actor he admired during the New Yorker Festival event last Saturday: 'Jake Gyllenhaal is obsessed with Ryan Gosling. Just saying. I would try to quote his answer from Saturday night when the audience question 'who would you like to work let's just say it began with Ryan Gosling, was jilted by Ryan Gosling via text "I'm busy" and then ended again with a circular non sequitor shout of "Ryan Gosling!" Jake likey. Ryan Gosling is what you might call an actor's actor... since everyone seems to want to work with him.'

This is particularly interesting because at the MTV TRL show back in the Zodiac days of 2007, Jake was asked which movie appearance he wished he'd done himself and he replied, Ryan Gosling's role in Half Nelson.

While I'm about it, here's the rest:

And showing what a small world this Hollywood world is, Ryan is also now attached to Farraut North which, for quite a while, we thought would take Jake to a New York stage.

Hello! Late post tonight (all Gordon Gecko's fault :D). Hope you're having/had a good evening!

I love Jake but it seems he has lost his passion for acting or HW has lost its passion for him. I hate to say this but I think the reason Jake is not doing anything is because he isn't being offered the jobs.

He's 30 and there shouldn't be a retrospective of his career at a film festival. And I don't think for one moment this has anything to do with Prince of Persia.

Something just isn't right and I think Jake has lost a bit of confidence because in the past the boy was cocky and you need that in HW.

I'm worried that Jake may be off the radar in HW and he is feeling it. I hope to high heavens I'm wrong.

Monica said...

He just didn't mention Ryan Gosling, but Michelle Williams too.

Ryan gave us one of the greatest performances by an actor in recent years in Lars And The Real Girl.

It's understandable to know that Jake wants to work with so many talented people. And when you work with talented people, you learn a lot.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Jake Fan! I just have to say it, and I can't say mush as midnight here and off to bed, but I absolutely don't agree with that at all. How do you know he's lost his passion? We've not seen him all summer - just like most summers!

We have no idea what jobs Jake is considering/being offered. It wasn't a retrospective - it was a chat about his processes of acting at a film festival - these go on all over the place and aren't confined to actors of retirement age.

I don't think Jake's lost his confidence - I couldn't know that as I don't know him - he's just getting a bit older and the older the get the less you blurt everything out. Is he off the radar? I don't see how - and what does the radar pick up? Do I want to see him associated with things like Spider-man or Transformers? No.

What's not right? He's had a summer off and here he is wowing the crowd at a film festival. Only thing off is the beard but I'll let him off :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

He also mentioned Johnny Depp, Monica. It is understandable but my point here is how generous Jake is in acknowledging it and how he continues to respect and admire people over the years.

That acceptance speech is so, so beautiful... I got all misty-eyed. What an angel.

It got me thinking - and I hope you don't mind me asking: if I compare Jake interviews/videos from nowadays to oldies like this one, I get the feeling he used to be more open, more comfortable with showing his emotions. I've not been around long enough to know the history, so I was wondering: has there been an event or bad press or something in the past that made him change his attitude towards publicity? Have the senior Gyllenhaalics ;) around here noticed a change over the years?

Monica said...

Yes, wet dark. One of the things I admire about him is that he's respectful and generous to people.

Darling Bluebell said...

Oh wow, Jake Fan, that is quite a statement. :) Mind if I write down my two cents' worth? ;)
I have never met Jake so couldn't possibly say who he really is or what is going around in his head. But looking at his expressions and body-language, to me they radiate confidence. He doesn't need cocky. Arrogance is only a tool for those lacking talent, personality and/or confidence. I think we can safely say Jake has loads of all three. ;)

Anonymous said...

People who know Jake say he has a confidence and that's one of the things that draw people to him.
Of course he will talk about not always being sure what to do with a role but it gets figured out.
And because he hasn't made a movie this summer that means he doesn't care about acting anymore or no one is sending him scripts? As said he has had other summers off he just hasn't grown the beard as long.
Seems to me he has a few scripts he has talked about that he hopes to do.
And when it was mentioned he had talked to the writer of "Wicked" about a musical That was the first time we heard about that.
There are actors & actresses on the radar as in you hear about them all the time, which sometimes make them "household names" but do you want Jake to be in that group? Don't think so.
He's not 24 anymore and as Ed Z. mentioned both he and Anne have had emotional things happen to them in the last couple years - and did say Jake was deeply in love with someone and then it was over. Maybe he just wants to take it easy and recoup.
Tho as far as work goes i wouldn't be surprised if he has been talking to various people about projects that we know nothing about.
There certainly was interest of some sort with the time with the "runners".
He'll be fine in other words.

Wow -- ladies circling the wagons for the Jakester! Jake Fan, now you know how Custer felt! I do think it was rather premature not to mention presumptuous to state that something might be wrong with Jake when none of us has a clue what is going on in the gorgeous, furry little head of his! I will wait here patiently (?) for L&OD, Source Code et al and keep Jake up in the proverbial stars, thank you.

"and did say Jake was deeply in love with someone and then it was over."

who said that, Ed Zwick?

Anonymous said...

It's on this site with a link to the "Blast" interview.

Though billed as a romantic comedy, the film does exactly what Zwick wants and detours from typical contrived conventions, and detours into more serious territory as the bond between Gyllenhaal and Hathaway’s characters deepens. Zwick credits life as inspiration for their performances.

“Everyone goes through things. Annie had this relationship that was traumatic. Jake was deeply in love with someone that had two children and it ended, and these things mark you. They have an effect on your soul and your instrument, and it’s happened to both of them.”

As for circling the wagons for me the main thing is to think Jake isn't being offered roles just doesn't make that much sense. As said, we've read where he does have projects in the future and as movie making usually is something that doesn't happen quickly i don't see anything to "worry" about.

Hi WDW and y'all,

I have the impression Jake Gyllenhaal is much more pro-active. He doesn't wait to get a role. He goes out of his way to get it (stalking Sam Mendes, for example ;-)... or, he creates opportunities for himself and others (e.g. Source Code, to work with Duncan Jones).
If he wants something, he goes for it 200%. Whether it's a role in a movie or anything else. He is not afraid to fail; and therefore rarely does (but yeah, he does fail... sometimes).

I had a little play with Google Trends to compare Jake's online popularity with some of his peers. He is clearly a pop culture phenomenon. The occasional spikes (movie release media hype) are strung together, like a steady pulse, kept alive by a strong beating heart of die hard fans - We, the Gyllenhaalics. ;-)

Moring everyone! Totally hectic here again.... I'm gonna need a month of Jaking soon to get over this busy time!

Morning Lady Ekster :) I've followed Jake for quite a few years now and there's nothing to be read into anything rather than Jake's getting older and hotter :D

Hi KC :) I've always liked how Jake can spend his time living his own life and he does it for big patches of a year - makes me appreciate the coffee/Medical center pics when we get them though.

Anon, as KC says, that interview was in a post here the other day.

Evening Lemniscate! I totall agree - Jake goes for what he wants 100% because, as he's said so many times, he has passion and is passionate. And that is something that unites Jake and many of us. And yes, the spikes come and go but there's a steady pulse beating :)

Have a great day everyone! Is it Friday yet??

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Gyllenhaalisgr8! I didn't see your comment - it didn't load with the others - very odd. But I absolutely completely agree with you! I see no point or interest in trying to fathom the thoughts of another human being that we don't know but simply adore :) Roll on LAOD!

Hello WDW and everyone

Jake's star is still right up there. A poll on his beard in the august Washington Post and a clip on Eonline this week, for example, which were both featured on this blog.

The more I hear about LAOD, the more I want to see it! Roll on the release date...:)

Cheers

Thank you Tui :) These things can all be found here. I would encourage readers to look around. And yes!

I think its great how Jake has a life of his own and takes a break between films, when you think how busy he has been this year filming Source Code and then all the POP promotion, he deserves a break to chill out and grow a big beard!

I think if you are successful as an actor you dont need to be working constantly and can be more choosy about the roles you are offered - which I think is the case for Jake, although I would like to see him on the big screen more often, quality is better than quantity :D

Darling Bluebell said...

Thanks WDW. :) With videos like these I want to punch myself for not having known about Jake before. But knowing that I've missed so much it makes me look forward to the years to come even more. ;)

That is very cool Lemniscate! I didn't know Google Trends even existed. *big grin* Is there an explanation of the scale of the y-axis? I can't find it.

Sasha said...

The acceptance speach video brought me next to watery eyes and a lump in my throat. Thx for that Video WDW.

He sure still is wanted as an actor and as others said before: why not taking some time off and stay under the radar ... I guess it is something that he needs too ... to load up the batteries and be himself without all the scrutinization (?).

And a lack in confidence is really nothing I could see in him. If he would have lost it he would not come up with such a big face bear f.e. ... (assuming as I know when I feel bad about myself the last thing I'd do is dye my hair pink f.e. but rather do things to make sure I'll be "invisible" or dont give room for bad comments)

And - without knowing him - I don't see him as being someone waiting to be offered ... but more finding out whats going on and if there is something interesting he goes for it.
Just as he has those "futur plans" he kept for himself at the Festival but sure will pursue at the right time - his time.

My last word on the Beard: After seeing the Bigfoot and New Yorker photos of said beard, and hearing comments as well as having my own opinion, here it is.

Sometimes soft, sometimes surly, Sometimes short, sometimes curly,
No matter what the hairy blunder,
Beautiful Jake is always under!

He will always be the most beautiful man to me, no matter what!

oh wow, I just LOVE that poem about the beard. I love him in a full beard. What about the "Born to Run" movie. Seems to me he's going after that. I recently read the book and it is GREAT. I can't wait for the movie.

"....although I would like to see him on the big screen more often, quality is better than quantity"

True - but consensus outside the Gyllenhaal fandom is that none of Jakes last four films was successfull - neither with the critics (Except ZODIAC) nor at the Box Office.

I don´t know whether he is off the radar, like Jake Fan said, but it is time for a hit movie again.

Example would be "Farraguth North" - Jake was interested in the play but for the film role now in talks are Pine and Gosling - both in Jakes age.

At the moment I don´t think Jake is first choice when it comes to the interesting, challenging roles.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hello everyone! Totally stressed out here at work but wanted to say thanks for the comments :D

And lovely poem Gyllenhaalisgr8 on National Poetry Day too!

I disagree with every fibre of my body, Sabrina. If you're talking of money measuring a hit then PoP was one of Jake's most successful films and Donnie Darko the least. If you're talking about critical acclaim then Zodiac soars. If you're talking about films that challenge us with what is going on in the world around us, then Rendition and Brothers are brave. If you're talking about a RomCom with something different about it then LAOD is the film for you and then to top it all a movie to come with one of the most exciting young directors about, Source Code.

Jake's films impress and dazzle for their range and scope. And the term 'hit' is relative - do I want Jake to make a succession of crowd pleasing blockbusters? No I do not.

I like that many of Jake's fans such as myself have been around for many years BECAUSE of these films.

I have a plea - can people lighten up and give Jake a break here? This site is here to celebrate Jake's roles over the years, not lecture him to do better!

I told you I was stressed :D

Chris Pine did the play " Farraguth North" a couple of summers ago at the Geffen House. So, their were rumors George Clooney would direct him in this film version, after Leo DiCaprio turned the role down. But, Clooney stated his favorite young actor is Ryan Gosling, so it is not surprising he chose Gosling for this film version.

I agree for some reason Jake Gyllenhaal has to constantly try to prove himself, which is ridiculous , because he has a nice body of work and an Oscar nomination. But, keep in mind Jake doesn't star in many blockbuster films. He is more drawn to character driven movies. Well written material is his priority- and challenging himself. So not having the highest acting profile is to his benefit because the film industry ( and the movie audience) will take him more seriously as an actor.

P.S. I would love for him to get back to the stage- show is acting goods and force the film industry to shower him with great scripts. I heard he received great reviews for the West End production of " This is Our Youth" . He should follow his acting buddy Anne Hathaway. She received incredible reviews for the musical " Carnival " and " Shakespeare in the Park's Twelfth Night". And, the NY theatre critics are the toughest critics on the planet.

Except for the huge blockbusters that people always rem. for being that the majority of people rent and buy movies and have no idea how they did at the box-office.
And that's "now". As the years go on it will be even more so. It's how good the movies are for "the people" Of course for the business it's the money, but even they sometimes do things for the quality.

How many blockbusters has Ryan G. been in? He has done studio and independent films and some that did nicely but there are movies he has made that haven't made much. The most of course was The Notebook but "Half Nelson" barely made 3 million. And I rem. the excellent reviews for the movie and for him. He's a respected actor and will continue to work.

The wide-variety of movies he has made is amazing for someone his age. And it's going to keep going.

I'm sorry your work is so stressful, WDW, I hope it gets better soon. :)

Now, not to stress you out more, but I agree with some of what Sabrina is saying. Zodiac was liked by most critics but Rendition, Brothers and POP did have mixed reviews and had lower box office numbers than hoped for. I think it's okay to say that he needs a box office or a critical hit, in my opinion, actors need those to stay in demand. And I for one wasn't impressed or dazzled by all of Jake's films, especially some of his recent ones. For example, I really didn't enjoy Rendition much (except for the first scene, of course :D ), I have no desire whatsoever to watch it again and I haven't bought any of Jake's movies after Jarhead. I'm not saying any of this to be negative or to criticize Jake, it's just my opinion. :)

Sometimes I think our love for Jake can make us a little biased in his favor. That's ok, we're fans. :)

If you'd rather we discuss only positive things, I'll respect that. It's your blog and your fun place, you get to make the rules. But I just wanted Sabrina to know that others share her opinion. :)

Hi! Just popping by as I have no time to comment just yet! But just wanted to say that absolutely people must say what they like! There are only two rules here - to be polite and not to quote/talk gossip. So yes, Olympia, you must absolutely say what you like.

I just disagree with some of it and it's not helped by being stressed at work and I don't have the time to join in :D

For me, I'm a fan of Jake's as I love his movies - and that makes it much simpler :D And I'll stick up for Jake's acting choices till my last breath - not because of me but because Jake makes his movies for a reason and I respect that and it inspires me.

I like to add something to the discussion of PoP haven't made as good as hoped/expected.
Honestly I couldn't be arsed to watch a movie that is based on a videogame (not even for Jake) - there are too many tooooooooo crappy adaptation ... and I wouldn't wonder if that kept other ppl from watching it too.

I don't know about the others - I have been intrigues by Rendition but they never showed in english here in germany so I didn't see it in theater.

Brother has yet to be released in my country - but I already watched it anyway...if it wont be shown in english I wont see it in theaters again.

I have seen movies that where adveritsed too much and they were completely crap and those that haven't had a whole shot at the advertisement but where so great. I think that is a department where those movie producers really need to learn a lot. They really mess up in the advertising department - IMHO.

And as for the said movies - and pls correct me - but I haven't read anything that Jake was bad. They got mixed reviews bc of storytelling or stuff like that - which Jake has little to none influence on.
I'm not so much a reader of critics - but I can't really remember having read or heard a really bad review/critic about Jakes work.

WOW I'd never seen this video. I knew Jake won quite a few awards for BBM. Of course the best known was the Bafta.

Didn't he get something from GLAAD too?

I was so touched by how he spoke about how much this meant to him. And that he'd like to go on to make movies like this.

It's interesting he mentions Ryan Gosling, he did "Blue Valentine" with Michelle that is due out around New Years.

It would be interesting if Jake did a movie with him (and, just a thought, Michelle again)

After going back and reading some of the comments I have to say that it is okay if we all don't agree. So long as no one is trashing each other or Jake a difference of opinion is nice to see. We're not all bobble heads nodding our heads.

HW is a strange animal, it's all about $$$$ and it's unfortunate. I wanted to see a sequel to POP but Disney dropped the ball (Jake worked SO hard to get ready, I think more was required than any other movie he'd made so far)

He has a right to downtime, he worked his butt off promoting POP then was dogged by the paps. So I think he had enough and removed himself from Calif and pap central.

As for the beard, unless it is for a role, I have a feeling it's days are numbered once he goes into full promo mode promoting LAOD.

I know we haven't mentioned Source Code at any length yet, but from what I know about it I am even more anxious for this one because I love a good edge of your seat movie. Action, adventure and mystery. And I love traveling by train and this movie takes place on a train (or at least part of it does)

I think Jake is going to be on the radar again after LAOD and SC come out.

Hi everybody!
Thank you WDW for digging up all those interesting staff about Jake. I have never seen those TRL little movies. Jake is adorable there. So easy going. And his acceptance speech is charming.

You had a nice conversation today.
I don't think Jake lost his passion for acting. It was important to him since his childhood. I don't think he could easily give it up. However taking other responsibilities would just keep him busy and would fill his life and head with other things and possibly pull him out of frequent acting. I just hope that is a lot of movie directors who like Jake's acting and will keep him busy with movies enough interesting for him.
In my opinion he's a lovely maturing person, very confident with calmness inside. Even in his movements is a lot of peace and charming self-confidence.
I think he could be disappointed with POP' reception. Beside great acting he put so much efforts, charm, humor in promoting that movie that miserable response from viewers could hurt him. It was incomprehensible.
About him being more open in the past. I think it comes with age. You keep some staff for yourself, you don't need to share with a lot with people, special with strangers. You learn to keep distance.

Sasha said...

having read all the comment again:

it's kinda funny ... I see him much more relaxed, charming, funny, witty now (like maybe about 3-4 yrs) with the press/in interviews than at a (much) younger age. And open too - maybe more controlled open (if that makes sense to you)

But that seems to be just me :/

again spamming sorry WDW

Hey WDW and y'all,

@WDW - hope work lightens up babe! Hang in there.

@mermon,
Whenever I read your comments, I'm like,... that's exactly how I feel about Jake? ;-) ~~~wave~~~
His maturity (e.g. how he carefully choses his words), his peacefulness and confidence (e.g. his tone of voice and body language).

One of the things I find most attractive about Jake, the man - not the actor, is his sensuality. The way he uses his voice, his eyes, and his hands in particular, to express himself. (I always pay close attention to a man's hands.) Jake's hands and fingers are usually open, relaxed, gentle. Yep, that's when "it" happened to me, during an interview, not when watching one of his movies.
It's odd. I had enjoyed his performances since DD; clearly the rational part of my brain guarded from falling for fictional characters - but that moment, during that interview - BOOM!
(Yeah... Can't prevent myself from falling in love with inaccessible, unobtainable, *sowayouttayourleaguegirl* men... I still need to work on that one. ;-)

I think he might have had to work a bit in order to embody this engaging, gracious and sensuous presence of inner peace though.
When I watched the Jarhead diaries a while back, I couldn't help feeling irked by his cockiness. Of course he was much younger then and perhaps he was still too much "in character".
Nowadays, I find it calming to watch him. And with that beautiful, shaded beard... Namaste, "Guru Jake".
Rambling... It's been wonderful so far, watching him learn and grow... and teaching me a thing or two along the way. Hope the journey continues, but also hope that I can actually meet someone with similar traits - like, my local barrista, say. ;-)
Jake has made me set the bar (too) high. Fudge!

Hi 0:45 - for any questions like that it's a good idea to search the site as you'll mostly find an answer.

I can't remember exactly, it may have been in GQ this year that Jake said he sees Michelle whenever she's in LA. So presumably he would also see her and Matilda in NYC. But thank heavens he does it privately.
