And so we have it - Jake Gyllenhaal's in NYC, with Rufus Wainwright

We all guessed it, I'm sure, but now there's proof that Jake's in New York City and by the look of things having a great time! Earlier this week, Maggie was seen at Rufus Wainwright's gig at the Gramercy Hall and on 8 June (I think) it was Jake's turn. But Jake went one better. In the words of the lucky member of the audience (I think I'll forgive him his spelling of GYLLENHAAL because he does say Jake looked 'hotter than hell')...

"The most amazing thing happened last night at the Rufus Wainwright concert at the Blender theater at Gramercy Hall in NYC ... Rufus has a song called "Between My Legs" (awesome song, by the way), during which - near the end - there's a spoken word part that sounds very Smiths-esque on the CD. Well, to read it live last night at the end of the song ... Jake Freaking Gylenhall comes out (looking hotter than hell!) and does it live. It was amazing and the place was freaking out!!!"

Here are the pictures so far (click to make bigger). Jake's been a fan of Rufus' for some time and so this must have been a great night for Jake.

Oh Wow! How fantastic, and what a great song. I wish we could hear Jake doing the spoken word part, it's very dramatic and romantic:

'Cause there's a river running underground,
underneath the town towards the sea,
That only I know all about
On which from this city we can flee
On which from this city we can flee
:)

Oh, I love this account..... can you imagine what it must have been like to be in the audience, and see "Jake Freakin' Gyllenhaal" walk out on stage? I bet they were going wild..... I know I would have probably been in shock (the good kind).

Thanks for this post, WDW. I absolutely love seeing him so happy and enjoying life for all it's worth. And, if he ever did decide to change careers, I say forget the restaurant thing and start a band!

Ask and you shall receive. I just came home from work and as usual my first thought is what has Jake been up to. Log on to the computer and there he is sure enough looking "hotter than hell!" He is the coolest guy without a doubt. If I could have been there, I would never need or want another birthday or Christmas gift for the rest of my live!

OOPS! I meant "life". See, that's what Jake does to me. Turns me into a blithering idiot!

A bit of a shock all this, I was just about to turn off everything for the night, having already done a WDW post, and there he was, on stage, smiling like anything and showing noone can hold a stage like Jake Gyllenhaal!

It's quite possible that if I'd been there in the audience for this, I'd have not seen it as I'd have been unconscious on the floor.

Marina, Birdie and Dani, thanks for commenting.

It's all too much.... Jake "hotter than hell" - understatement of the century!!

Ahh, love this, seeing Jake in NYC on stage with Rufus. :D

Hi Get Real - I think it's brilliant and I love to see Jake having such a great time. These are the perks, sharing the stage with a singer you admire so much. And great for Rufus too - wow, just fantastic all round :D

I don't really "get" Rufus (must be an age thing), but it's great to see Jake having a blast.

Hey Beckela - Since his The Maker Makes, Rufus can do little wrong in my eyes. It's so good to see Jake having such a great time! And I bet the audience wasn't complaining ;D

I like him too, I love his resonant, baritone voice and the dramatic quality of his songs. And of course there's the BBM connection! :)

ah that is SOOOOO amaaaaazing!! Good for our Jakey!!

I wish he would sing, too. I can't get enough of watching his Dreamgirls performance on SNL, in fact I think I'll pop it into the VCR again right now,(65th time I'm sure!)

I sure hope he does another SNL soon!

Hi Welliwont!

It really is amazing, I can't get it out of my head! What a man!

Jake seems to love this live performing, this and SNL. Just put him in front of an audience... I really, really hope there's more of this to come.

Thanks for commenting :D

Hi Anon - thanks for your comment. Jake seems to have excellent taste in music, just as he does in everything else ;D

Jake has such eclectic taste in music -- he even admits to liking musicals, which I adore. I doubt that I would have ever heard of Rufus if it weren't for The Maker Makes, which I didn't understand at all when I first heard it in BBM. (I lead a fairly sheltered life, LOL.) He is growing on me, though, primarily because he is so gutsy, much like Jake. I love to see Jake having such a good time -- there is pure joy on his face here.

Hi Beckela - I bet Rufus has a whole load of new fans this morning, getting to know more about him and his music. The Maker Makes is my favourite piece from the soundtrack and now I feel Jake has even more of a connection with it. But just look at him having the time of his life there - born to be a performer!

Got to admit - I love musicals too ;)

I agree, everyone, I'd love to see Jake in a musical. His Dreamgirls performance on SNL was wonderful, and I recorded it also!

There's so much emptiness and sadness in The Maker Makes, it was a perfect song for the end of the movie and soundtrack, when Jack is gone from Ennis and the emptiness he was left with really settles in. It reminds me of a Spiritual or something. The sound track's music follows the emotional ups and downs of the story, and you are left with that final note from The Maker Makes as a resolution or acceptance of sorts, and then The Wings plays next. What a beautiful soundtrack. :(

Via, IHJ/RW boards:

When Jake G. came out during "Between My Legs", it was just the best surprise! They even pinned a friggin' broach on him, too! :o) And he hammed it up immensely. The best part was Rufus' reaction while Jake was up there - I think he almost lost it himself, he was laughing so hard! I'm sure that Jake will pop up on YouTube, but I hope that someone also captured Rufus, as his reaction was priceless.

Oh I love it and I so love Jake!! :D

Hey Marina - what a wonderful description of The Maker Makes. It comes at that moment of desolation and it couldn't serve it better. I remember after I first saw the film and got my hands (as quickly as possible) on the soundtrack, I played it over and over again.

It's worth mentioning that there are a couple of songs from Zodiac which have a similar affect on me now. Just as there was in Donnie Darko and Moonlight Mile. These films all talk to us through their soundtracks - all part of a great movie, I suppose, and Jake knows how to pick them.

Thanks Marina.

Hi Get Real

Thanks for the info - I was wondering about those brooches and that's really cool that Rufus seemed to know nothing about it! I really, really hope we see more from this. A video would be too much to hope for, i'm sure, but maybe another picture or two.

Thanks for commenting.

Actually, Rufus pins a brooch on all of the special guests that get onstage to sing on that song. It seems to be a ritual to his concerts. :)

So, is it my understanding that this was a surprise even to Rufus himself, of Jake's appearance on stage?! What an amazing experience for everyone to see Jake!

Jake has supposedly been a fan of Rufus' music since quite a few years. He may also feel somewhat of a kindship sort of speak with Rufus perhaps, because they both come from similiar backgrounds and families. Both of their parents were in the film and music business, and they are also both close to their sisters as well. I believe I remember reading an interview from years ago when Jake was promoting a movie, Jake mentioning he was going to a Rufus concert in London. Perhaps also like what was mentioned, Jake perhaps may admire Rufus gutsy attitude, and not being afraid to be himself.

I really like Rufus's rendition of "Hallelujah". Check it out on You Tube for those who may be interested.

I do look forward to the day that Jake will sing in some type of musical, in theatre or in film. Loved him on SNL! Supposedly Jake once sang in a high school band.

Like everyone, I too hope that a vid will pop up on You Tube of this!

Hi Jantoinette

That's really interesting about Rufus - I didn't realise that Jake had liked his music for so long. It must be wonderful if you like a band/singer and you're in a position to even get on stage with them! And it must have been great for Rufus as well if his reaction is anything to go by (judging by the comments of people who were there).

I can't even imagine what it would have been like for the audience....
