Rendition on the horizon

There's no doubt that it's been an exciting time over the last few days - well, the last month - for all Jake fans and the indications are that it will just keep getting better as 2007 progresses. Zodiac is still in the cinemas of much of the world, doing its best as the only non-franchise movie against the likes of Oceans 13, Pirates 3 and Spidey 3, but now Rendition, Jake Gyllenhaal's next project (at least on screen), is just beginning to show above the horizon.

We all remember the agony and frustration of the repeated delays that dogged Zodiac's release, not to mention the exasperating lack of information, but it looks like we could be rewarded with Rendition. Rendition, directed by Gavin Hood, hasn't been delayed but, on the contrary, it's been brought forward in both the US and the UK to October 12 this year (although, for some unexplained reason, Canada has to wait for another two months). Not only that, the production and post-production have progressed so smoothly and, one would think, to schedule, that advance screenings are underway and, judging by an account at imdb of one such screening, it looks like only minmal 'tweaking' will be necessary.

This is what the lucky viewer had to say yesterday: "Rendition is a very solid film with strong performances and direction, a taut script, and great cinematography and locations. Some scenes can be hard to watch, but the various intertwining storylines pay off and are well edited, and the movie runs on a steady pace. Definitely a possible Oscar contender. The audience seemed to like the movie quite a lot when they gave it a good round of applause at the end. This version of the movie was pretty much in the final stages in terms of editing, etc., and certainly there will be some fine tuning going on."

Rendition is not necessarily going to be an easy film to watch - the practice of rendition has been in the news in recent days, particularly concerning the existence and movements of 'torture planes' and the disappearance of individuals, now countryless non-citizens, who have no recourse to justice. So topical and controversial Rendition will be, and it will make us think. Here is more information about the film's story and characters, including Jake's role as Douglas Freeman, the National Security Agent based in Cairo who faces a crisis of conscience.

At the moment, one can only speculate about the reasons for Renditon's new release date. Does it, for instance, have anything to do with the film festivals of Venice, Toronto and Vancouver? It looks like the promotion will be well underway at the New York Film Festival, where New Line Cinema, the makers of Rendition, will be celebrating 40 tears of cinema at Lincoln Center's Theater on October 5 - Jake, along with other members of Rendition's starry and award-winning cast, is expected. And after the news of today, one can only speculate on what else Jake may be doing in NYC in October.

Not that it isn’t great news that our next dose of Jake on the silver screen has been brought forward, I really do hope that it hasn’t been done to coincide with the recent media attention to the practise of Extraordinary Rendition.

Much as the practise of torture by proxy is as abhorrent as torture directly, it would be equally abhorrent for the filmmakers to attempt to boost audience levels by capitalising on current events.

Yes, the film should be used to highlight these kinds of practises; I suspect that was always the case, and what attracted Jake to it in the first place. It’s just there is a world of difference in making a film in order to spark socio-political debate and awareness, and rescheduling your film release date to possibly capitalise on the existence of the very thing your film intends to highlight.

Maybe I’m being naive, but the latter doesn’t sit well with me – and I would hope it wouldn’t with Jake.

Interesting, playmaker. I hope it's the film festivals that are influencing the release date. Quite disturbing otherwise.

Hi Playmaker - Good comment there.

My gut feeling tends to agree with Beckela that the release date has been changed because of the festival season and also, perhaps, because of award nomination time.

I would prefer to think that the filmmakers have not been influenced by current events. I mentioned them in my feature because I thought it showed how timely the film was, not that it was trying to capitalise on this abhorrent behaviour.

As you say, this film can highlight these practices and bring them out of news broadcasts and the serious press onto the big screen and into the wider perception - surely, all for the good.

I am sure that Jake would not want his film to benefit from these practices - I would argue that he sees it instead as a means of informing a mass audience.

I think it all boils down to Venice, Toronto and Vancouver - and the chance for the film to be introduced to the world in as big a spotlight as possible.

Thanks for the comment, Playmaker. This is very interesting and this is what I like about Jake's choices. His films are not always easy (I'm still trying to fathom Donnie Darko!) and that's all for the good. I can't wait to see Rendition.

As do I Beckela, hopefully I’m just being overly suspicious and seeing co-incidence where none exists

I agree with you - I'd hate to think that was the reason. This is going to be a very powerful film, in the way Syriana was, I think. I'm very much looking forward to it. I'm so happy that Jake likes to take on these kinds of issues in his roles, and we also may have a Jake theater performance to look forward to as well! :)

Hi Marina - Thanks for commenting. This could be an incredible fall/autumn.

Maybe I'm being greedy, but I also want to hear of future movie roles!

Hi WDW...I am excited about this film..I just hope it is not too one-sided as liberal Hollywood is in many cases. Also..I thought Jake's character was supposed to work for the CIA..not NSA. But I could be wrong...thanks for posting...still loving your site so so much..

Hi Anon - I'm so glad you love the site.

I may well be wrong about the NSA - I've read both. imdb has CIA but other articles have said NSA, so I'm by no means sure right now!

I hope this is an intelligent film too. Jake's judgement has proved true so far.

Thanks for commenting :D

I sincerely hope it keeps its release date for the UK for October as it would be a great bday pressie for me. It would probably be unlikely for Uncle Jake to be away from the family as Ramona's 1st birthday would be around that time.
