Brokeback Tears, Rendition Truffles and Caviar and Batmobiles

We've been chatting here in recent days about our own experiences of watching Brokeback Mountain with those we love - not something anyone would do without a handful of hankies - or one would have thought. In the August edition of Marie Claire, Anne Hathaway reminisces about the time she watched Brokeback : "I didn’t stop [crying] for an hour. And Kirsten Dunst, who was going out with Jake, was like two rows behind me, and [Jake Gyllenhaal’s sister] Maggie Gyllenhaal was right behind me, and we were all crying so hard; my boyfriend offered Maggie his handkerchief, and she was sharing it with Kirsten. And I’m thinking, That’s my boyfriends–can I have my Kleenex that you bitches are using?” I'm surprised that Jake's ladies didn't think to bring some tissues with them - but it's slightly more disturbing that Anne should want the rag back...

In Times Online, in December 2005, Jake remembered with tears in his eyes about the time he saw the film with his parents: 'Gyllenhaal arranged a special screening of Brokeback for his parents recently, and by the end of it they were in a heap, like a collapsed scrum. "They were both in tears," he says, looking decidedly glum again, before immediately brightening up. "Hey, maybe they were crying out of embarrassment."' I doubt that, Jake - and thanks to a good friend for reminding me and us of the link for this favourite interview.

In Marie Claire, Anne also discusses her pride in being part of Brokeback Mountain: “I had such a cool experience. I Was like, Hells to the yeah. If this is possible once, it is worth striving for the rest of my life–to be part of something that is so beautiful and smart, that is the best this medium can be.”

Rendition

As the Canadian media prepares itself for an influx of stars at the Toronto Film Festival this September, the Vancouver Sun has published an interview with the producer of Rendition, Bob Shaye, who is founder, co-chairman and co-CEO of New Line Cinema. It's an interesting interview and allows Shaye the opportunity to describe the pressure of having been the producer of the hugely successful Lord of the Rings trilogy - the problem being, you don't want to clog your audience's arteries with too rich a diet. I like a man who thinks in terms of food analogies.

'"You don't want to put too much caviar and truffles into the mix," he says, explaining that it may cost too much and not taste good. By the same token, no one wants an endless hamburger diet... Right now, Shaye says he's got a truffle and caviar movie called Rendition that just wrapped, but he's not worried about box-office or the menu price. The movie stars Meryl Streep, Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon, which practically guarantees an audience of erudite movie fans and a nomination during awards season.'

Meanwhile back in Gotham City

The good people of Chicago have been warned off the streets by my old favourite The Chicago Sun-Times. It seems Heath Ledger and Christian Bale will be in hot pursuit of each other and, possibly, one of them at least will be in the secret Batmobile. So if you live around Chicago you might want to avoid or seek out (depending on whether you're a fan or not) 'Lower and Upper Wacker drives over the next several weeks [where scenes will be filmed] involving dozens of squad cars, fire trucks, SWAT vans, helicopters and pyrotechnics. The filming will last from dusk to dawn and cover miles of roadway.' The script for these scenes is strictly under lock and key so speculation is rife as to whether everyone ends up in the river.

Sounds like a lot of fun to me - I can see why Maggie Gyllenhaal wanted to be a part of this project. As she told the Living Scotsman this week: "The part came up and something about it just appealed to me," she says. "It was just well-written and fun. And the opportunity to work with [director] Christopher Nolan and an actor like Christian Bale was just to good to pass up."

Pictures from IHJ.

Just wanted to tell you: you have such a neat way of hooking up all these bits and pieces into a seamless whole!

And I LOVE the pictures. (Love to see Reese laughing and just beaming and animated and happy! Think I know why, too.Recent picture of her, she seems down.)

Chris Nolan is using some fine actors and making some really smart films! Loved the first Batman with Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, and Christian Bale. And now to add Heath and Maggie to the mix....it's brilliant! Of course, Christian Bale held his own against the amazing John Malkovich when he was 12...working with Spielberg!

Hi Bobbyanna - Thanks for that. I like all the bits and bobs myself. Ahh, you've reminded me. I forgot that was Chrstian Bale. Any film with both Heath and Maggie in is one I have to see :D

More exciting things to read about - you really do make this blog wonderful, WDW.

I love this pic of Maggie hugging her brother Jake.

Brokeback Tears - it's interesting that everyone who sees it, including the actors themselves, are so moved. I can't think of any film that I have felt this way about. I always need a box of tissues at the ready! :)

Since you mentioned your "Brokeback Moment" listening to "The Maker Makes" on a previous thread, I've been playing the soundtrack in my car driving to work. I hadn't listened to it in awhile. I listened to "Brokeback Mountain 3" (the music that played during dozy embrace) and it always gets to me. All the snaps, pops, and squeaks of the acoustic guitar just "bubbling" over with love and emotion when Jack and Ennis embrace, reaching it's highest notes. Then it slows down and descends into the lower registers, steel guitar in the background with that "achey" sound, when Jack resigns himself to Ennis leaving again. Where are my tissues? A beautiful and evocative piece, and probably one of the most romantic and sad things I've ever seen in a film, I'll never forget it; I've decided it's my favorite scene in the movie.

Great news about Rendition, and I hope any Chicagoans out there get to see some of The Dark Knight filming! I'm definitely going to see it, too! :)

Hi WDW! Great post:) I agree with Bobbyanna, I love how you can weave any number of subjects into one post, and always make it interesting to read too.
No-one is immune to Brokeback Tears it seems. I know that for me sometimes just THINKING about BBM makes me feel like crying. Thanks for posting that interview with Anne, I thought she was excellent as Lureen. And I bet she wasn't exactly crying when she had to do that scene in the car;) No matter how many times I watch that scene, i still go weak at the knees when Jack utters the immortal line "fast or slow, I just like the direction you're going" *swoon*

Marina, you're a braver woman than me listening to the soundtrack while driving. That's a beautiful description of the Dozy Embrace piece, and it's one of my favourite scenes too, even though it tears me apart to watch it.

I really CANNOT WAIT to see Rendition. I just hope I don't have to wait as long as I have for Zodiac.

Another great post, WDW, chocked full of goodies! I love that we are getting more news about Rendition. Can't wait.

And once again, thanks for covering The Dark Knight. I am eagerly awaiting this one even though it will be another year before we see the finished product. Thank God we only have a few more months to see Jake!

Marina, just yesterday I was having a horrendous morning at work so on my lunch break I went out and sat in my car under a lovely shade tree. Suddenly, calling my name was the BBM soundtrack, I hadn't listened to it in a while. Even though the music is so hauntingly sad and hardly what one would normally listen to when already having a blah day, I felt such a calm come over me at the beauty of Gustavo's guitar. I love how you so eloquently described BBM 3.

I generally don't have any interest in comic book movies (haven't seen any of the Batman or Spiderman movies), but the presence of Heath, Maggie and Christian probably will get me into the theater for this one. Christian was absolutely amazing in "Empire of the Sun"..... still probably my favorite Spielberg film.

Cannot wait for "Rendition".....and, yes, that cast and director definitely make this a caviar and truffles film! Thanks WDW for that bit. I know this is kind of trivial, but I wonder who everyone else thinks will get top billing. My money is on Reese (those Best Actress/Actor Oscars probably guarantee that for a while).

(Bobbyanna, I agree with your observation about recent Reese pics.)

"I'm surprised that Jake's ladies didn't think to bring some tissues with them - but it's slightly more disturbing that Anne should want the rag back..."

On the face of it, her words are rather disturbing, but methinks it was all said in jest. I can almost hear her very charming laughter while uttering that. JMO.

Hi everyone!

After all this talk I know what I'm going to be doing tonight and that's watching Brokeback Mountain. Somehow knowing that even its stars, and their loved ones, were as emotionally involved while watching it as us, has made it seem even more poignant.

Marina - That's a beautiful description of that fine piece of the soundtrack. Just knowing that the Dozey Embrace is a few scenes away is enough to set me off :)

I'm glad that the music brightened your bad day, Dani. I find it calming myself and I do like to drive to it.

Twisted Logic - I am sure Anne had no problem at all with that car scene :D I love that scene too - Jack looks so young and so ready. I've always been fond of Lureen. I thought Anne was fabulous in Prada. But in this interview, she was definitely joking as you say Incognita - she's supposed to have a wicked sense of humour :D

Hey Birdie - I'm not a superhero film fan at all but I'm definitely making an exception here. If I lived around Chicago I'd definitely go for a look.

I actually saw some of Empire of the Sun being filmed all those years ago, as the grand house scenes were filmed in my mum's village. I had the chance to be an extra but it required having a drastic haircut and I was at a 'delicate' age. But it was fun to see Spielberg though.

I do like the description of Rendition as a Caviar and Truffles film - it certainly is. Jake, Reese and Meryl... an amazing cast. And we mustn't forget Peter. I suppose Reese should have top billing due to her 'Oscar Status' but Jake's role is the leading role so I don't know how they'll play that. I suppose Meryl could be 'With a Special Appearance from...' so that she won't have to appear down a list. I liked how they did the billing for Zodiac, with Jake's name in the middle and slightly raised.

Anonymous said...

Well my Zodiac dvd came this morning, I will probably watch it tonight. The cover is the one with the faces on, does'nt look quite as bad close up.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ahh Lucky Anon! Enjoy - and try not to look at the cover ;D, although I'm glad to hear it doesn't look as bad as it could have.

I'm loving all the posts about the BBM soundtrack. The music played a major role in drawing my long buried emotions up to the surface. I'm not sure I would be able to go into that zone en route to work though.

Dani your words "I went out and sat in my car under a lovely shade tree. Suddenly, calling my name was the BBM soundtrack" are so poetic and evocative. It makes me want to do the same.

Wish I could comment more .. having awful eyestrain since yesterday.

Anonymous said...

With all the BBM soundtrack comments I think I know which music I will play while driving to pick up my mom today...With all the disturbing memories of Oscar night I was happy for Gustavo S...he so deserved to win.

Anne´s interview was funny - I really don´t think that Maggie and Kirsten would share the same Kleenex but we all get the picture...:-))

Today I found an interesting short article or comment on Rendition:

http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=news&id=10992

I agree with the guys comments on New Lines ability to promote a film that is not "LOTR". "A history of violence" and "Little children" are excellent, kind of eccentric films - but IMO New Line failed to promote them in a appropriately way. Lets hope they learned their lesson and with Bob Shays comments I will try to have faith.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for that link Carla. Just can't wait to see Rendition for myself.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Carla - I know, my memories of that night are pretty painful too. At least the music recieved some recognition.

Thanks for the information about the Rendition article - at the moment it seems we know so little about it. I really want to know more. After all, it's not that long away and a trailer could be soon!

Incognita - I hope you feel better soon *)

Anonymous said...

Great post, WDW. Love everyone's comments, too, and I agree totally. Gustavo's music takes me back to Brokeback every time I hear even a few notes.

But I just have to say something truly trivial, unimportant -- lame, actually. Would someone please explain to me the logic behind Heath's choice of clothes? There are Jake and Anne looking fabulous wearing gorgeous clothes that actually fit and are beautifully pressed, while Heath looks like he has slept in his for about a year. And those shoes! I know, I know -- very off topic and picky, but Heath is a talented, attractive man and it just does NOT make sense to me that he would purposely make himself look so awful -- especially next to Jake, who is beyond gorgeous.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Beckela - oh, you've got me started now :D Now, I hope everyone knows how much I love Heath BUT his clothes are terrible. Perhaps someone can let us know here what he's about. I've heard that he's got a stylist so I just don't get it unless that's the very image he's trying to foster. The shoes are particularly bad, I agree. Sometimes Heath looks wonderful but so many times....

We could be in trouble now, Beckela! :D

Anonymous said...

Uh oh -- yes, we could be in trouble! LOL I guess my age permeates my comment! I am not a fashion officionado (is that right?) and I am not into today's "thrown together" look, but it seems to me that Heath takes that far to the extreme. Yes, I have also read that he has a designer, but I haven't a clue what either of them is thinking!

Anonymous said...

Good Morning, all -

Thanks for your comments - if what you say is true, it's because I love Brokeback so much! I love reading all your thoughts and impressions of it too, our love for it really shows.

Carla, thanks for the Rendition article, and you are right, that was definitely a bright spot at the Oscars, when Gustavo Santaolalla won for his beautiful soundtrack. That and Ang Lee, and Larry McMurtry and Dianna Ossama winning.

TwistedLogic, I really like Anne too, I loved the character of Lureen and loved her in Prada. Damn, that scene in the car with Jack was great - the lucky woman!

"You don't think Ah'm too fast, do ya? Maybe we should put the brakes on?

Answers? If the man is Jake, who cares and NO! LOL

Incognita, feel better soon. I loved your recent post on SNG, "From the Ocean Emerges a Mountain".

Listening to music while I drive is very relaxing for me, it's my Zen time for myself, driving to and from work. Going in, I plan my day - driving home, if I'm caught in traffic, I rise above that listening to my favorite songs! Dani, glad you were able to escape at lunch and listen. I enjoy your lovely comments about BBM too. Luckily, on the BBM soundtrack the sadder songs are offset by a few more upbeat ones, and ones of Jack and Ennis in happier moments. I love "Brokeback Mountain 2" - I think that's the scene where they were setting up camp together, very warm.

I had to smile at your comments about Heath's clothes, especially where Jake must be a stylist's dream to work with. Heath's got that "unconcerned" approach to fashion, but he truly is a gorgeous man too. :)

Anonymous said...

**Sorry, corrections - I meant to write "SMG", and the song is "Brokeback Mountain 1", not "2".

Anonymous said...

I don't know if my being older is a factor, bcz I don't have a problem with edgey fashion choices...if they work!! I adore Heath.I was a huge fan long before BBM. Going back to Ten Things! But I have to admit that sometimes I just want to shake him!!!! The retro-hippie, BoHo, artsy look is fine. ..when it works. But with Heath, it very often doesn't work. I once read somewhere that he admired Johnny Depp as a sort of role model. When Johnny "dresses up" he often looks horrible. (I call it the Tim Burton effect! LOL!) But in his casual everyday look, Johnny is H.O.T. A cover of Newsweek just before POTC III came out this year he looked...just amazing! There was a series of photos of Heath and JAke attending when Ang recieved his DGA award or Producer's Guils award prior to the '05 Oscars. The ones where Heath is adjusting the collar of a grey shirt while Jake "advises."
Jake is sugar sharp and Heath is a mess. That one got to me, bcz even tho I know Heath isn't like this, I felt it was disrespectful to Ang not to look his best for the event. I'm sure there was an explanation. He was a new father, etc. but still... I'd like to take his striped pilling sweaters and give them to the homeless!!!

Sorry! That's me Bobbyanna! Didn't mean to post anonymously.

- Bobbyanna

Wow, Bobbyanna, that was a great comment! Love your choice of words.

I agree, I like BoHo and artsy, or dressed to the 9's. :)

Anonymous said...

Bobbyanna, I agree completely with your "disrespectful" comment. I wish Heath would get a new "stylist" -- or even just get Jake's advice. Or perhaps commandeer Jake's stylist, if he has one. Whatever! Although I'm not a huge fan of Heath (BBM is the exception) and I don't find him particularly attractive, he, and his fans, deserve better.

(Please don't kill me for this. I'll shut up now -- promise!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Fab comments guys! And Bobbyanna, don't be surprised if I work 'Sugar sharp Jake' into a post ;D What a great choice of words - and also a complete contrast to how I might describe Heath's sartorial challenges.

I also enjoyed your impression of Lureen, Marina, quite uncanny!

Listening to music while I drive is one of my biggest pleasures and I have no end of Jake playlists :D

Beckela - I'm with you entirely and we can stand firm against the onslaught! I like to think that I can be a bit edgy myself in what I wear - who am I kidding, I'm a jeans, hoodie and Nike girl - but Heath just looks like someone who takes a lot of effort to get it very wrong - you know what I mean?

I'm not a big fan of many of Heath's films (BBM and Knight's Tale being my exceptions), but as Ennis he does feel like part of the Jake family and so I'll keep an eye on him here as I really wish him well - and better turned out... ;D

I love how this has become a discussion of how we could dress Heath better...

Great comment Bobbyanna - and I'm with you on he 'disrespect' thing. I can just imagine the faces of both Ang and Jake dropping as Heath wallked in the room. I think Ang is probably a very polite man (or maybe not?) but haven't both Jake and Maggie commented on how honest Jake can be - painfully so. I wonder if he ever has a go at Heath? Love to hear it!

What a plethora of wonderful articles I woke up to just now; that's what I love about this site. I am also glad you are here; I need Jaking, and I haven't been able to log on or stay connected to DC for more than 5 minutes these last two weeks:(
I don't think I've read any of the linked articles, or if I have, they were forgotten. Thanks for that.
Last year's pictures of Reese were happy ones, compared to recent snaps taken since her ex lowered the boom on her last month, by initiating a custody suit.
I'm more than empathetic, having known people in similar circumstances getting divorced in CA. She has to put her life, all parts of it on hold, to fight for custody of her children. I know she will not end up like other actors, who still wait for their final custody verdicts, as they date, drink and misbehave in public.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass - That's great to hear, thanks! I know, the server problems at DC are becoming more than tiresome...

I think everyone here wishes Reese well - it will be good to see photos of her smiling again. I hope she'll enjoy the Rendition funfair as it gets underway this Autumn.

Thanks for your comment - I'm always happy do some Jakin anytime :D

Speaking as one who looks "thrown together" instead of "put together" most of the time, I feel I can't say too much about Heath! It's interesing how creative minds put their outfits together, either really well or "unique". I'm mostly a jeans, t-shirt/sweatshirt and athletic shoes type myself, so I can't say too much about him! I do enjoy fashion as art tho, - beautiful designs, colors, fabrics, textures. It's nice too see our favorite celebs looking fab on the red carpet. :)

Also so sorry for the typo in my earlier post. It should read Diana Ossana, not the other. OMG - talk about embarrassed *blushes and turns about 6 shades of red* :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Marina - sounds like we like the same kind of clothes as well as incredibly handsome and sexy movie stars ;D

Please don't worry about any typos - I'm queen of them!

Interesting observations here...

Whenever I see Jake - in his casual everyday clothes, his jeans, his baggies, his shorts with flip-flops, his shirts (especially his favourites), his countless sneakers or at awards shows/official premieres with his tux, the ties and the shirts matching the colour of his eyes, reminding me of those old movies stars like Cary Grant - he always looks absolutly comfortable and self-confident and he has this special charisma around him.
With Heath I never see this self-confidence and he always looks uncomfortable (you only have to look at the DGA pictures which Bobbyanna mentioned) - I always have the feeling he has not found his own style yet. I know that the Heath fans say they love his unique style and so on but I have the feeling that his stylist has imposed this style on him to deepen his "indie" image. Perhaps he should fire the stylist and try to find out for himself what matches him and what makes him feel comfortable.
I have a friend working in the fashion industry and he always says "It does not matter what you are wearing - but it must make you feel comfortable like a second skin - otherwise people get a wrong impression of you".

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I definitely agree Carla and this is what I meant when I said tat Heath's style seems like hard work. Like it's supposed to say something but it's not quite got the language right. I agree that he should just wear what's comfortable - many of the things he wears at public events look the very opposite of comfortable.

Jake by contrast, as you say, is king of his style - whether it's a tux, a suit, a jacket over jeans, jeans and t-shirt, or spandex - he looks great whatever he wears. And I love that he seems to wear some of his favourite clothes out - as I'm sure do many of us :D

Anonymous said...

If I might make a slight clarification: I adore Heath Ledger. I've seen all his films, and I think he is a brilliant actor and supremely sexy. I also think Heath has issues with people emphasizing his looks, so much so that he deliberately makes himself as unattractive as possible...which is too bad.I also think he's a very unpretentious person who thinks a lot of the so called trappings of celebrity are a lot of B.S. I don't have a problem with any of that.He needs to get over the hang-up about his looks, now that we have accepted the fact he's a serious actor. Anyone who's seen a lot of pictures of Heath can testify to the fact he sends out a very sexy vibe...at least to me...so he should just embrace who he is and get over himself! LOL! As for the disrespect thing, When it is awards season, almost everything is black tie. Period. I don't think Heath would stand for a stylist like Jake might have, but he doesn't really need one. I would love a chance to go thru his wardrobe and start tossing things out...except...he might toss ME out...a second story window! LOL!!!

My affection for Heath in no way interferes with my affection for Jake. Two separate things. Like someone once said: There's Jake. Then there's everyone else.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bobbyanna - well, I'd love to see you take over Heath's wardrobe too! I do think Heath can be a very sexy guy and I do think he sends out a vibe as you say. But I just feel like he's trying too hard when it comes to how he presents himself at functions when really, as you say, a black tie is most suitable.

There's Jake. Then there's everyone else. I do so like that! And how true.

I have this image in my head now of Heath chasing you around his wardrobe ;D

LOL!!!I wish!
P.S.
I hate to be catty, really I do. But when he was with Naomi, I think she really made sure he looked good at the appropriate times and also didn't go too far off the beam when he was attempting to be "unique." I think she was strong where she needed to be strong.

I must confess, your serving up all these lovely tidbits, like Jake and Lance in France (!) is really helping me feel better, bcz I am SO missing Jake right about now!.It's really been acute the past few days especially! Don't know why, but I have a feeling he is not exclusively in MV. I can't help but sense, that he might be going back and forth to NYC...if he is in fact preparing for a reading for Promises Promises. When I handled dance companies, we sometimes held backers' showcases (actual abbreviated performances without costumes or sets) to see if we could raise $$$ and sponsorship for a dance company's performances. I think a theatrical reading is similar. They may be trying to identify financing/producers willing to take on a revival of Promises! Promises!. If anyone out here has seen The Apartment, with Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine, it's a musical based on that movie. Old movie.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bobbyanna - thanks for that. I know just how you feel, I'm missing Jake too. And I agree with you that I don't think he's exclusively in MV right now. But my job right now is to remind everyone of everything else that's going on until Jake reappears - I will always have something to say about Jake. He'll reappear again, having had his good long break or having sorted out his business. We just have to be patient. Easier said than done, I know. Oh, and I agree with you entirely about Naomi- she is a very special lady.

Anonymous said...

hope it's not too late to add my thoughts on Heath's "style". I totally agree with Carla and Bobbyanna...... Heath quite often strikes me as someone not at all comfortable in his own skin. He can seem almost painfully self conscious. (Unlike Jake, who personifies confident, self assured stlye IMO.)

I think Heath does make an effort to use his clothes to combat the "pretty boy" actor perception and to try and reinforce the idea that he is artistic and give a shit. And even though I really like him, I can't help but say that strikes me as kind of immature. When I see pics like those with Ang, Jake and Anne, Heath just looks unkempt and sloppy. He's a very attractive man..... I wish he would make his peace with that fact and dress accordingly.

Anonymous said...

oops! that last post was mine..... forgot to sign in.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Birdie - Never too late...

That's such a good comment - the more uncomfortable Heath seems in his own skin - as you saym coutering the pretty boy image he must feel he has - the more self-assured and sophisticated Jake seems. It would be good if Heath could stop trying so hard to be different.

I've just seen BBM this evening, so I'm not at my best right now :)

Anonymous said...

Can I just say Thank you, Katie for all the great Jakeness bcz it really does "take the edge off" and I truly do appreciate the stuff with Lance in France(!) and all the other Jake discussions...and pictures! I'm really enjoying your blog enormously. Great job!!!

Ruby said...

Oooh, you are talking about Heath and I feel the need to weigh in here!! ;D

Apparently he has a friend who is a fashion designer and he designs and makes a lot of Heath's clothes. If Heath is trying to play down his looks it is my opinion that it isn't working - he's still damn attractive to me! Even more so when he speaks - that voice does things to me!

It is my theory that Jake is very comfortable as the Hollywood boy and it shows in his dress and his confident manner. It is also what I would expect from somehow who grew up in the environment that he did. Heath is not in his natural habitat in Hollywood and I understand that he doesn't feel totally comfortable there. But then, what do I know?...I dont know either of them. Just thinkin' out loud!

I can't help but think that if I were ever to actually meet them I would probably feel more comfortable in Heath's company than Jake's.

I do love them both though. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby
That's a good point - Heath's upbringing in Australia must have been completely different to Jake's in Hollywood so of course Jake is going to feel more naturally in tune with Hollywood style.

I wonder if Heath would be more comfortable company? I suspect that Jake would be very charming and amusing and Heath might be more himself. But, as you say, we don't know either of them and so we can only speculate and think out loud - I do think that if I were in their company I would just sit there with my wide open, gaping like a fish, which might not make either of them good companions!

To me, when I think of Heath's voice, I just think of Ennis, and I'm such a Jack girl.

Thank Bobbyanna - You're welcome :)

Anonymous said...

Great post, Ruby. I never thought of it that way, but you could be right about that - Heath may not be at his most comfortable with the HW stuff, and I kinda like that about him! But I adore Jake's comfort level and confidence with it, too.

You're also right about Heath's wonderful speaking voice - it would be nice to hear more of in, in theater or a voice in animated films or something. I can't tell you how much I loved him as Ennis, and the only other thing I'd seen him in was Monster's Ball. It's hard to know which character I identify with most, Ennis or Jack, but I think it's both at times, with Jack having the slight edge. :)

Ruby said...

a voice in animated films or something

Marina, that brought another thought into my head...

I'm sure I'm not alone in hoping that Jake and Heath might one day work together again. I can see that they might not want to, for a while at least, but it did occur to me that an animated movie might be a way of them working together without actually appearing on screen together. I know animated movies are not to everyone's taste, but if it was well done and of the quality, say, of the The Incredibles, then I'd go see it for sure :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Marina and Ruby - I love the thought of an animated movie. On occasion I've played The Man Who Walked Between the Towers at night just as I'm dropping off as I find Jake's voice so relaxing and emotive. To hear Jake's voice with Heath's would be so good. I really would like to see them together in something as well, even if it's a long time off - the chemistry was amazing. As for just seeing them together, I hope we get a chance at the Batman premieres next year.

I love this discusion by the way ;D

Anonymous said...

Oh I so agree -

I loved The Man Who Walked Between The Towers, especially post-9/11, soothing for adults as well as children. Jake's voice was very soothing in it.

I'm kind of a kid at heart, but well beyond in years. I find animated films to be works of art - who could forget the kingdom of the animals in The Lion King, or Beauty and the Beast, or the beautiful Mulan or my favorite, Pocohontas. The message in that one really gets me. To enjoy and share them with children,or just in their own right, is great. I'd love to see Heath and Jake doing something like that, Ruby and WDW. :)

Remember high school? There were a few kids who could stand in front of a large group and speak and make us laugh. They had "public" personalities - Jake. And other kids who were fine in a small groups, but would just be crazy at the thought of speaking before a large audience- Heath.

Ohhhh! I just gave myself goosebumps about their voices! Picture this: It's 1 AM in a pitch dark room. The voice whispering in your ear -Heath. Nighttime voice.
It's 5 AM. just barely a hint of false light at dawn. The voice whispering in your ear- Jake.
I know. I have this vivid imagination. I think I'll go write the screenplay! LOLOL!!!

I think you've got them down, BobbyAnna! I don't know if I could stand that much excitement either, thinking about both Heath and Jake whispering in my ear! ;)

Bobbyanna What are you rying to do to a girl - Jake and Heath whispering in your ears all through the night... and me still in a vulnerable post-Rufus state!

Public and private - that's a good way to think of these personalities, both of which seem huge in their own way.

I love those animations too Marina - they feel sphisticated and childlike all at the same time.

Ruby I think we need another beer ;D

Ruby I think we need another beer

You're absolutely right. Shower for me first though.

Back on topic _ I saw 'The Man who Walked Between the Towers' for the first time a week or so ago. Well read (of course) and I loved the animations.

That's an interesting analysis bobbyanna. I think Jake also has his private personality. We see him - interviews, red carpets etc. - in 'working professional' mode. I'm sure there is more to all of us than we allow to be seen in a work environment.

Now, all I need is some private time with Jake......... ;D

Ruby - I find it interesting trying to reconcile the performer and showman that Jake undoubtedly is with the man who thinks deeply about spirituality, keeps a journal, reads very serious books, runs many miles in solitude and makes the kind of friends who seem to be very protective of him. I love the public Jake when he's on show but I'm very intrigued by these private moments.

You and me both :D

Another missed great conversation. I love all of your thoughts about Jake and Heath and agree with all of them so I won't say anything else.

But I never want to miss an opportunity to identify myself as a "Jack Girl". That I am through and through and I am sure it has a lot to do with how much I love Jake. But I have to give Heath some love, too. That voice! Whether he's speaking in his natural way or in character as Ennis, the richness and depth of it does something to me. And nothing beats the way he, as Ennis, calls that one name - JACK!
I'm getting a chill right now....

Hi fellow Jack girl! There is something very special hearing Heath as Ennis say Jack's name.

I never meant to imply Jake doesn't have a "private" side. Sorry about that. Of course he does. I think he's a
person of real substance: very intelligent, a deep thinker, and an intuitive, perceptive observant, sensitive person. I just meant that I thought of him as more comfortable in public settings than Heath is.IMHO, both guys are intelligent, creative people who are extremely sensitive not only in themselves, but to others. That's what makes them great actors.I think they are both risk takers and intellectually very brave and honest. And I would just like to hug them both!!! LOL!

It's ok bobbyanna. I wasn't disagreeing with you, just building on what you said. :) You are right - Jake does have a public personality - he is a natural performer and likes the attention when he is in work mode. I also see him as a very savvy businessman, when it comes to the choices he makes.

I think we all appreciate that there is heaps more behind public-face-Jake, which he gives us tantalising glimpses of in interviews. The big tease!

'A big tease!' - Oh yes Ruby!

I have an image in my head now of the 'savvy businessman' and he's wearing a very smart suit and shiny shoes and maybe that lilac shirt - I fear I may be dragging the tone of the conversation down ;D

That's a lovely comment Bobbyanna - I think Jake and Heath compliment each other completely partly because they are so different. But as you say both are extremely intelligent and both are committed. However, for me, there can be only one... :D
