Get out the champagne! Here's Jake with Rufus!

You're going to want to sit down for this one - I know I did. I'm sure, like me, you had given up hope that any clip at all would emerge of Jake Gyllenhaal having the time of his life up on stage with Rufus Wainwright on 9 June. Well we were wrong! Today, we can at last see and hear the reaction of the so so lucky audience as Jake walked on to stage and we can just watch in amazement with them as Jake does his stuff in his own inimitable way.

These videos have a habit of disappearing so I won't apologise for the number of pictures here. Thanks very much to a good friend for giving me a loud shout!

WDW, I about fell out of my chair when I saw this! Thanks so much, I'm downloading it right now. Jake does look like he's having a great time. I love this song so much, there's just something about it. This will make my day, it'll be playing in my mind all day now! Incognita, this should cheer us up. :)

Hi Marina - I'm in a complete state of shock right now! This has got to be such a tonic for us all - Incognita emailed me the good news so I hope she's smiling right now. I feel weak... Has anyone got some brandy....

Anonymous said...

Love it, love it, love it!!!!! I haven't a clue what the song is about, but seeing Jake have so much fun brightens even the darkest day. Thanks, WDW -- yet again.

Hi Beckela - That's all I can say right now - I am mush...

Anonymous said...

LOL, WDW! No worries -- I understand totally.

Anonymous said...

gold star for you WDW - as a journalist in a former life, I am
in awe - you certainly do get the
"scoops" (if that word is still in
motion) - yeah Im mush too, on a Sunday morning -

I KNEW we'd see this, one a these days!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi pia! Thanks - can't take all the credit though! But at the moment this does feel like a big scoop :D

I'm torn now, the shops shut in 20 minutes and I need to buy some food but I can't leave the video!

I think we should all take a deep breathe - feeling giddy...

How are you doing Beckela!

If its not okay to post the lyrics please delete -

You can go out, dancing
And I'll write about you, dancing without you
And I'll shed a tear between my legs

When you were here, I missed you
Now that you're away, I'm out there without you
And I shed a tear between my legs

Though we live in the same city,
You live in another state far away from me and all of my unfaded charms
But when the rocket ships all fall, and the bridges, they all buckle
And everybody's packing up their station wagons
There's a number you can call, like a breast that you can suckle
And we quietly will exit as it all is happening

Again, I'm afraid of one thing,
Will I walk away from love knowing nothing, wearing my heart between my legs?
But when I know you're naked, lying on the bed while I'm at the piano
All I can say is I can't fake it

When the rocket ships all fall, and the bridges, they all buckle
And everybody's packing up their station wagons
There's a number you can call, like a breast that you can suckle
And we quietly will exit as it all is happening again
'Cause there's a river running underground, underneath the town towards the sea,
That only I know all about
On which from this city we can flee
On which from this city we can flee

Thanks for those lyrics, PIA. I have to admit I just don't get it, but I will continue to try.

I'm good, WDW -- how are you? Well, besides being mush. Oh, and the shops will be open again tomorrow. :-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks very much for posting the lyrics pia :D

I couldn't make out what Jake was saying in the last line ;D

This is such a good song to hear live - obviously I heard Rufus sing it without the added euphoria of having a Jake moment, but it was such a good way to close the first half of the how. Allowing Rufus time to get into his ledehosen!

I think they're extraordinary lyrics and create incredible images in my mind, even though I'm not sure of their full intention, which is probably a point of them.

Beckela I think my pulse may have calmed a little now. But I've missed the shops. Who needs food when you have Jake? :D

"There's a number you can call, like a breast that you can suckle"

All those numbers are of my beloved friends in cyberspace. yes this video had helped me no end. thanks to drakius who posted it on the DC Forum's Temporary Refuge. marina this has cheered me up after a horrid day.
Pia it's great to see you and thanks so much for the words. I look forward to having some word play with you over this.
Beckela don't worry, you'll get it all of sudden out of nowhere. Just keep reading them

WDW, now you have an excuse to go out to eat. That's what Jake would do, of course. And do choose a restaurant with free wireless so you can take your handy/dandy new laptop -- which means you will take Jake with you!

Anonymous said...

One two three DEEP BREATH!

Anonymous said...

This was just wonderful! *Sigh* Jake did a fabulous job and I loved the kiss. There's just something about the ending of this song, I love the part where the keyboard intstrument comes in, sorta sounds like a steel drum?

"There's a river, running underground . . .

It's so dramatic, like Phantom of the Opera or something. Love it. This made my day, WDW, thanks to you and your friend for finding it! :*

Anonymous said...

Incognita, you have much more faith in me than I! I will keep trying.

I asked a friend recently, who is an audiophile extraordinaire AND gay, what he thinks of Rufus. His response describes my feeling exactly: "I like the IDEA of Rufus Wainwright. The REALITY, not so much." But, I'm thinking I must listen to more of Rufus' work to give him a chance -- I'm trying NOT to be like my father regarding music, I guess.

Anonymous said...

I need a handy dandy laptop too!
How about a discussion thread for those lyrics. They deserve it. WDW run for your food. The shops close pretty early?

The kiss was lovely, thanks for capping it.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Beckela you're so right! Now I have my laptop I can carry Jake and everyone here around with me all day. I can just imagine sitting in a restaurant and discreetly bringing out the laptop and sticking YouTube on and out blasts Jake!

It really is so dramatic Marina - I don't know what school of acting that was, but extremely theatrical and very funny! I loved the kiss too :D

And the friend was Incognita! I'm glad this has helped you feel a little better today, Incognita. Jake heard you needed cheering :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Beckela - I probably would have thought the same thing as your friend but having seen the show, I went away and bought three more albums and there are some stunning songs in terms of melody, delivery and lyrics. I really recommend the Want One and Want Two albums. There are some songs on there that are sublime and so beautiful. While others are pure theatre.

And on stage Rufus comes across as the most modest and unassuming performer and man - just sharing his gift, not making a song and dance about it - if you know what I mean - because one thing he does know how to do is sing and dance. His Judy Garland was something to behold!

hi Incognita Shops shut here very early on Sunday so too late!

My favourite line in the song is the one about the rocket ships and bridges. Also it's a wonderful image - the idea that there is an escape underneath the city, underneath the troubles, if you reach out and call.

Still feling very giddy... :D

Ruby said...

LOL. What a ham!! Very funny and totally out of sync with the song, I wonder if they rehearsed it all?! Love it. :D

This is off topic for this entry, but I'm sure WDW will forgive me, especially with DC being down, which is where I'd normally share this.

I just took one of those silly internet quizzes - The Book Quiz - which asked some rather odd and random questions to identify which book you are. I'm sure Jake fans will appreciate my excitement at my result:

"You're To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee....." :D

You can do the quiz here:

http://bluepyramid.org/ia/bquiz.htm

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby! I see no evidence of rehearsal here at all! Maybe Jake didn't understand the lyrics either and thought he would give them his own unique interpretation! So funny and Rufus looked like he enjoyed every minute of it :D

Thanks for the link to the quiz, I'll have a go and let you know what book I am - I suspect it might be one aimed at 5 year olds.

No fears about going OT - we're good at that here and I like it!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

No favourite Jake book for me, Ruby - Apparently I'm Love in the Time of Cholera and I have to stick to bottled water...

Anonymous said...

why these lyrics affect me deeply

I hope this is not TMI, but Im finding myself fairly emotional this morning -

1) Jake is a figure of compassion, in my view - one of the meanings of him. and so "a breast to suckle" indicates consolation, etcetc. dont mind me. I wax profound over Jake (and I think for Rufus fans, of which I am at least not yet - just becoming acquainted) there is some of the same kinda love. maybe maybe not

2) at the time of the onset of Persian Gulf War, being devastated - rockets falling, bridges, too - I found myself at a Holly Near/Ronnie Gilbert concert in NYC and HN and RG said, there's a strong river of song/love and peace work that runs underneath - something like that - it was similar consolation in a terrible time.

What a funny little quiz! I am Watership Down -- here is what it said about me:

You're Watership Down!
by Richard Adams
Though many think of you as a bit young, even childish, you're actually incredibly deep and complex. You show people the need to rethink their assumptions, and confront them on everything from how they think to where they build their houses. You might be one of the greatest people of all time. You'd be recognized as such if you weren't always talking about talking rabbits.

The only rabbit I ever talk about is Frank, of course, quite recently, in fact.

Anonymous said...

sems to be an improptu thing they do, since the guests seem to carry out the words they're to perform on a prompt sheet.

Anonymous said...

(((PIA))) -- How beautiful! Thank you for that.

Anonymous said...

Hey from the friend Marina!
Beckela this is like Stephen's poetry. It's incredible the way "At 25" came back and hit me in a way that I got the whole thing unravelled crystal clear. And I had loved it for months without understanding big chunks of it which all just fell into place.

Anonymous said...

Ah, yes, Incognita! And my hearing many of Stephen's poems read by the man himself was quite helpful in understanding them better. So, I guess that means I must listen to Rufus himself as well.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Beckela - that sounds very complimentary. I can't say what the dscription said about me as it makes me sound like a right floosy!

Pia - thanks for sharing that here. When we're feeling emotional, Jake becomes the perfect conduit and it should demonstrate to everyone that being a fan of Jake means much more than just oohing and ahhing over a movie star. He's done some things, intentionally or otherwise, that make us think about a whole range of issues - just look at some of the strange and wonderful topics we've discussed here over the weeks! And it brings us together for fun and for discussion.

The idea of a river running dark and true below chaos is an important image I think, and also a great consolation when bridges are falling down around you. There is a safe path if you reach out. And while cities crumble, buried rivers flow.

So keep going Pia. we can talk about anything here.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm out of sync with my comments again! I was replying to your comment, Beckela about the rabbits :D

We are in a poetical and lyrical mood today - very nice, inspired by Jake's great hammy performance! It seems very suitable for a late Sunday afternoon. (Is it too early for a beer?)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey pia - your's is even worse than mine :D All right, I'll share mine as you were brave...I swear it's not true if you're reading this Mr WDW!!

You're Love in the Time of Cholera!
by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Like Odysseus in a work of Homer, you demonstrate undying loyalty by sleeping with as many people as you possibly can. But in your heart you never give consent! This creates a strange quandary of what love really means to you. On the one hand, you've loved the same person your whole life, but on the other, your actions barely speak to this fact. Whatever you do, stick to bottled water. The other stuff could get you killed.

Anonymous said...

OMG, PIA! What answers did you give? That result seems to totally negate the entire quiz. Of course, these things are only for fun. But that result is far from fun!

Anonymous said...

I don't understand. Guess that quiz is one to forget about entirely!

Anonymous said...

Heee heeee see what it says about me!

You're Pale Fire!
by Vladimir Nabokov
You're really into poetry and the interpretation thereof. Along the road of life, you have had several identity crises which make it very unclear who you are, let alone how to interpret poetry. You probably came from a foreign country, but then again you seem foreign to everyone in ways unrelated to immigration. Most people think you're quite funny, but maybe you're just sick. Talking to you ends up being much like playing a round of the popular board game Clue.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I know, seems like a strange thing to say in a quiz...

As for the poetry, lyrics etc, I think it's very true that sometimes we don't know what they mean for us until a situation happens and then they become our songs.

Anonymous said...

"You might be one of the greatest people of all time. You'd be recognized as such if you weren't always talking about talking rabbits."

Totally hilarious, Beckela/aka Dawn Darko

What a funny quiz, thanks Ruby.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Did we all answer the same questions?

Anonymous said...

"The only rabbit I ever talk about is Frank, of course, quite recently, in fact. "

Beckela LMAO at that!

Anonymous said...

PIA: Totally hilarious, Beckela/aka Dawn Darko.

I thought so, too. And, yes, I love the Dawn Darko story!

Good question, WDW -- surely we had different questions to answer.

Anonymous said...

"Jake heard you needed cheering :D "

WDW seriously Jake never lets me down. He never lets any of us down. Pia you are so right about Jake standing for compassion. Maybe some people will laugh at this but I think he has a vast and beautiful aura and that helps anyone who comes to know of him.

"sometimes we don't know what they mean for us until a situation happens and then they become our songs. "

WDW you are so right about this.

Beckela we should go back and try again to see if the questions are different.

Anonymous said...

hee hee indeed incognita. this is SO YOU -

very eeerie! And I do love Nabakov!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I went back and my questions were the same... How can we all answer o differently? :D

Incognita - I do think Jake has an aura about him - it was very apparent on the two occasions I saw him.

pia - we should lie next time. I'm going to pretend I like Oprah... ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

And so just because I lied and said I liked Oprah, this is what I got...I'm a waffle!

You're The Poisonwood Bible!
by Barbara Kingsolver
Deeply rooted in a religious background, you have since become both isolated and schizophrenic. You were naively sure that your actions would help people, but of course they were resistant to your message and ultimately disaster ensued. Since you can see so many sides of the same issue, you are both wise beyond your years and tied to worthless perspectives. If you were a type of waffle, it would be Belgian.

Anonymous said...

Oprah? I didn't have anything about Oprah!

Anonymous said...

Love the "Jake Aura!" I think Stephen has a bit of that as well.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I was just thinking how incredible it would be to go and see a band and suddenly Jake emerges from behind the curtain...

Ruby said...

The questions do vary on that silly quiz. Not to be taken seriously. Well, apart from my result of course! Mr Ruby wasn't too impressed at being Lolita I can tell you!!

Oh and WDW - no it isn't too early for a beer, I'm about to crack one myself!

Sorry guys - you are all talking poetry and I'm in a frivolous mood!

Anonymous said...

Nor did I get anything about Oprah?

Anonymous said...

"but maybe you're just sick."
but this was eerie

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ruby - I hear you - I'm crack open a corona and seek out some lime.

So how come I get all the Oprah questions?

I'm feeling a little frivolous too, Ruby! And I'll be feling even more frivolous when I get the bottle open :D

By the way, I'm listening to Rufus' Beautiful Child right now - recommend it. A big number.

Anonymous said...

Poetry and frivolity go quite well together, methinks! I LOVE this place!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

So Ruby What did actually BEING Jake's favourite book tell us about you?!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Apologies for my spelling today by the way - blame Rufus and Jake for raising my blood pressure. Beer's open...

Ruby said...

So Ruby What did actually BEING Jake's favourite book tell us about you?!

"Perceived as a revolutionary and groundbreaking person, you have changed the minds of many people. While questioning the authority around you, you've also taken a significant amount of flack. But you've had the admirable guts to persevere. There's a weird guy in the neighborhood using dubious means to protect you, but you're pretty sure it's worth it in the end. In the end, it remains unclear to you whether finches and mockingbirds get along in real life."

The bit about authority and taking a significant amount of flack is definitely true of my worklife at the moment. I wonder who the weird guy is!! :D

Anonymous said...

Yes, Incognita, it is eerily you. Don't know about that "sick" part, though. Maybe whoever put up the quiz just needed to have some sarcasm in there. But I do believe we all have some sort of "sickness" in us -- at least some kind of obsessive disorder. Or is that passion? I'll go with the latter.

Anonymous said...

Beckela,

I'm Watership Down too, which I'm very pleased about! I do love rabbits. :) Thanks for this quiz, Ruby. These things are great fun.

Pia, I love your interpretation of the lyrics of Between my Legs, those are the impressions I have too - security, comfort, a refuge for someone, plus a lovely secret that only the two characters of the song know - escaping with the one you love! :)

Ruby said...

BTW Mr Ruby re-did the quiz with slightly different questions and became The Hobbit. I think that eased his mind a little. ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Int-er-est-ing Ruby. Strange about the weird person but at least he's protecting you. I wonder how many books there are.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Marina his is incredible: security, comfort, a refuge for someone, plus a lovely secret that only the two characters of the song know - escaping with the one you love! :)

That rings so true to me and I think now I get the Between my Legs line. It's all about secrets! To me anyway. Fascinating!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Beckela - we are definitely all about passion, that's for sure.

Seems like the rabbits are taking over, I'm going to do a Mr Ruby and find a more satisfactory answer.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

All right, I had another go and now I'm being told to avoid rabbits!

You're Alice's Adventures in Wonderland!
by Lewis Carroll
After stumbling down the wrong turn in life, you've had your mind opened to a number of strange and curious things. As life grows curiouser and curiouser, you have to ask yourself what's real and what's the picture of illusion. Little is coming to your aid in discerning fantasy from fact, but the line between them is so blurry that it's starting not to matter. Be careful around rabbit holes and those who smile to much, and just avoid hat shops altogether.

Anonymous said...

Well, don't avoid Frank! He is actually a good guy when all is said and done!

Food and sleep both are highly over rated! I can't believe I have been sleeping away for the last six hours and the coup of the century had occured. When I first awoke and got the word to hightail it over to WDW, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My brain was still clogged with sleep and my eyeballs felt like sandpaper. But it didn't take more than a second for the brain cells to kick in and with a few rapid blinks of the eyes I was ready for Jake and Rufus, Finally!

Thanks so much, WDW and Incognita. I think the delayed gratification of getting to see this instead of when it first happened has intensified my response to it. Like some of you have said in the many posts before me that I read before leaving my comment, Jake just seems to know when we need him. I am sure there are others who think we are all simpletons because we react to Jake in this way. But there are fans and then there are FANS who totally get him and have been lucky to have been touched by that "aura" around him.

As you said, WDW, through Jake we have been lead to many new discoveries that have brought about great conversation. Now I am not going to pretend that I totally understand this song but I will definitely give it the attention that all of you and Jake feels it deserves. There is no such thing as too much knowledge or too much creative diversity. So it looks like buying the Rufus CDs that you recommended, WDW, are on my immediate shopping list!

How could I forget to mention the kiss! Loved it. Love Jake.

He was definitely having the time of his life up there. I wonder if it brought back memories of when he was in a band when he was younger? The kiss at the end was so sweet- I bet Rufus loved it ;)
Thanks again WDW and Incognita :)
I'm off to do the book quiz now.

Ok, I've just done the book quiz- I got Ulysses by James Joyce, which is kind of ironic as I've tried several times to read it and never made it past the first 6 pages or so!
You're Ulysses!
by James Joyce
Most people are convinced that you don't make any sense, but compared to what else you could say, what you're saying now makes tons of sense. What people do understand about you is your vulgarity, which has convinced people that you are at once brilliant and repugnant. Meanwhile you are content to wander around aimlessly, taking in the sights and sounds of the city. What you see is vast, almost limitless, and brings you additional fame. When no one is looking, you dream of being a Greek folk hero.

The scary thing is, some of that is pretty accurate!

Btw, forgot to say earlier, thanks Pia for posting the lyrics to Betwween My Legs:) Analysing song lyrics is one of my favourite pastimes, and these are full of possibilities. I think I need to watch the video again though, just to get a better feel for the lyrics of course, nothing to do with "never enough Jake";)

Anonymous said...

Is it my imagination or wishful thinking, or does Jake sound as if he's putting on an English accent in the video? Something about it reminds me of the beginning of "Magical Mystery Tour" where it goes "Roll up, roll up..." It's probably just me, making no sense as usual.

Anonymous said...

Well, that video was a hoot. What a ham! The few times I have seen clips of Jake performing live, I always think of those photos of him at age 6 or 7 singing "Born in the U.S.A." for his dad. He really hasn't changed all that much, has he? :D

I say this with the utmost affection..... I think he is something of an attention junkie. I'm convinced he will do just about anything (on stage), especially when he is front of an adoring audience. And he's totally equal opportunity....... he loves attention from any and everyone..... women, men, children, little old ladies, dogs, cats...... he loves it all. This guy was born to be onstage!

Anonymous said...

I forgot to thank Ruby for the link to the book quiz. Turns out I am "Watership Down"..... a book I have never read. I remember when it was quite popular, but for some reason it just didn't tempt me. Perhaps if I pick armadillos as the animal I prefer, I'll get a different answer? (Well, I was born in Texas.... the same town that Jamie Foxx is from, actually. And, no, I don't know him..... my parents moved when I was 6 months old.)

Anyway, the quiz was fun. Thanks, Ruby!

Hey WDW...you and your site are the absolute best. Thanks so much for finding this and posting it. It does weird me out a bit though. Jake sounds like he is possessed. Hi guys! And it's a complete coincidence but Between My Legs has just shuffled onto my MP3 ;D Spooky...

Anouska the Monkey Lover - can we swap books?

Twisted Logic - I definitely agree with you and that's what I thought to. Jake sounds just like one of those Shakespearean actors of yesteryear - maybe someone from amateur dramatics? I hope this wasn't an audition :D

Hey Birdie - If anyone thought that Jake couldn't dominate a stage, this'll prove them wrong. And he's totally equal opportunity....... he loves attention from any and everyone..... women, men, children, little old ladies, dogs, cats...... he loves it all. - Oh yes!

And you're another rabbit? It's getting scarey. I didn't have any armadillo qustions :( And you another one Bobbyanna?

Hey Michele - I know, it wasn't what I was expecting at all. But I suppose if you're going to go for it...

Hi Good Girl - Good to see you here! :D

Anon, yes, we're very lucky indeed. And they did such a good job, the camera only shaking when Jake walked out on stage. Admirable as I would have dropped it. A good idea about posting some comments over there.

I think I'm going to watch it again...

Anonymous said...

Ah this is a great day for a Rufus's and Jake's fan!!

Speaking of the song meanings I think I got it...:)

It talks about a secret relationship IMO, where one of them is married or something like that ("...Though we live in the same city,
You live in another state far away from me and all of my unfaded charms etc."), maybe even a homosexual relationship...

And, you know, in this kind of relationship there's always someone who is the compassionate one, who waits for the other one to be available or ready to be led in an almost magical world, hidden to anybody else, where their love is the only thing that's real...

And who can play "the Compassionate One" better than our own Jake/Jack Twist??

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Xenia - Great day indeed! I've been distinctly giggly and giddy for the last 24 hours...

That's an interesting interpretation. I like the idea that one of the lovers is ready to take the chances and can see the way through the difficulties. So he's there to lead the other through. As you say, if only Ennis had taken Jack up on this. As for Jake, just let him lead..

Anonymous said...

I don't have time to analyse this song at the moment, but I'm willing to try later (I've had a lot of practice with poems recently). Xenia, yes, could be a secret/forbidden love, metaphorically bringing down the world if it gets found out.

I just want to say I love the line:

Again, I'm afraid of one thing,
Will I walk away from love knowing nothing,

Makes me think just a little of Ennis! :(

ps I'm glad every liked the book Quiz. I can't take credit for finding it though, I was lead to it.

Hi WDW! Glad it's not just me that thought that! It's the way he says "city" that made me think that, he pronounces the "t" more strongly than Americans do usually (though saying that, I'm English and often drop my "t"'s altogether). I've wanted to hear Jake speak in an English accent ever since the GQ interview, where the interviewer said he put on an English accent at one point. I've always wondered what he would sound like.

Xenia, I like your interpretation of the lyrics. I never thought of that. I thought it was about taking a relationship for granted, being with someone physically but feeling they're distant emotionally ("when you were here I missed you...Though we live in the same city,
You live in another state far away from me") and wanting to break away from that person but knowing you'll always be there for them whether you want to or not. But who knows, apart from Rufus himself. And even if Rufus were to spell it out, the great thing about lyrics is that they can mean whatever the listener wants them to mean, no-one can take away the feeelings they inspire in you. My favourite song ever is "One" by U2, because the lyrics mean so much to me, but I read an interview with Bono where he explained what it was about and it was nothing like I had imagined. But he also said that it can be applied to any situation, so it still has the same meaning to me.

Hey Ruby - That is a wonderful line. It's strange how a few of us are now finding Jack and Ennis in this song.

Your quiz has filled the site with rabbits... ;D

Twisted Logic - I remember that interview and how Jake did an English accent. I would love to hear it too. It's about time he got over here and did some Shakespeare!

As for the lyrics, I saw it too as a means of trying to unite physical with emtional love, and being in touch physically while missing them emotionally. The beauty of lyrics as you say.

As you know I'm a big U2 fan too and not least because their lyrics are superb and mean so much to me. I think I particularly appreciate the lyrics of Yaweh and most of the songs on the Achtung Baby album. I can suit every mood with a U2 song, and now I've found I can do that with Rufu' songs too :D

I think it's about time Jake got over here and did ANYTHING! He could do panto with the latest bimbo off Big Brother and I'd be happy to see him!

I could talk all day about U2 lyrics. The whole of Achtung Baby, especially "One" and "So Cruel" are my favourites, but also "Stuck In A Moment", "Crumbs From Your Table", "Running To Stand Still" "Please"...I could go on and on and on...No wonder I got Ulysses in that test, the way I ramble on about nothing!

Anonymous said...

Ahem, twistedlogic, I'd have to disagree ;)

The song - didn't Rufus write it about boyfriend Jorn, or am I thinking of another one?

Anonymous said...

Hey Anouska, that's cool, we can agree to disagree. Like I said, I've never made it past the first few pages of Ulysses so I'm in no position to argue!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Twisted Logic - Jake in panto - I wonder if he's ever been to a panto? He'd be great! But I think it should be a private viewing for just us ;D

I love 'So Cruel' - one of my favourite songs of all time. Oh and 'Please' to. I wish U2 would do a UK tour...

Hey Anouska the Erudite - I'm not certain this song is for Jorn or not but I believe many of the songs are. I love the 'Release the Stars' album.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Twisted Logic - I did once buy Ulysses at a car boot sale but I never read it - Ihave a hard enough time just spelling it ;D

I dont think the full text of us Lolitas has been posted; Ive taken the quiz again and am certifiable. To wit:

You're Lolita!
by Vladimir Nabokov
Considered by most to be depraved and immoral, you are obsessed with sex. What really tantalizes you is that which deviates from societal standards in every way, though you admit that this probably isn't the best and you're not sure what causes this desire. Nonetheless, you've done some pretty nefarious things in your life, and probably gotten caught for them. The names have been changed, but the problems are real. Please stay away from children.

-

So I'll 'fess up.

This is pretty funny in view of my pursuit (as Anouska, for one, knows) of a certain twenty two year old parking valet, that is appalling certain friends who think I am "deviating from societal standards" and indeed,"I'm not sure what causes this desire."

And then, there's Jake. O sacred name. gosh.

Oh by the way - thank you ALL for yesterday! I believe in it. haha.

Rufus dedicatd The Maker Makes to Jake, I believe. Someone asked him why not both Jake AND Heath and he said he had a thing for dark haired men. also Im sure its well known by now that in the performance following when Jorn read the lyric lines Rufus commented that the only man more beautiful than Jake was Jorn.

I *heart* pia ;-D

PIA - Go for it and deviate! never mind what your friends think!! :D

I too have a personal interpretaion of One. Too personal to go into here that's for sure.

I love singing along to the track Release the Stars. I guess that one is a little easier to interpret than Between my Legs ;)

*waves to Anouska the perpetually renamed*

Pia - Go for it!! And Good luck :D

I had no idea that Rufus dedicated The Maker Makes to Jake! That makes it even more special for me now. Rufus certainly shares our taste in men. That's made my day, Pia :)

I loved his comment that Jorn is the only man more beautiful than Jake.

Hi to Ruby and Anouska the Compassionate!

Love the song Release the Stars. Beautiful Child is my favourite right now..

Sigh I'm just loving this thread .. all the interpretations of the song, the book quiz and all the fun. And all Anouska's names! And our dear Rufus and Jake.

Dark chocolate o you're raising the temperature Incognita - or perhaps raising the QUESTION - what would be even more sublime than the taste of fine dark chocolate upon the tongue - (pia swoooons, thinkin' on it!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Incognita and pia - it's definitely approaching that tim of the evening agai - time to bring out the chocolate and the red wine and think on happy things :D

Zinfandel?

Warning: obscure reference ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Anouska the Engimatic - a delightful puzzle true enough.

I'm opening the wine now so I'll soon be on to you :D

Anonymous said...

Hi guys! Zinfandel and chocolate - sounds like match made in heaven. Only I can't have any wine yet, it's only 2 pm here! ;)

It was interesting to read that Rufus dedicated "The Maker Makes" to Jake. It's just so Ennis to me. I always think about Ennis' regret for what might have been, and lament for the loss of Jack, and how he won't be a happy man until he is "reunited" with Jack by his Maker.

It means even more than that to me as well; it sounds like a Spiritual, both lyrics and melody, where slaves used to sing about being "delivered" from their oppression, with song lyrics with hidden meaning. Not unlike the oppression of those like Ennis and Jack, those in homosexual relationships who are also oppressed. The lines "one more chain I break, one more notch I scratch" - one more obstacle overcome, one more day over. Between that and the "get along little doggies", doggies being "motherless calves", it's a very sad interpretation, sorry! Sad, but also uplifting in a way too. It leads to the next song "The Wings" which always reminds me of Jack's spirit.

I guess lyrics can be interpreted so many ways, as you all say. I enjoy doing that as well. I love our great discussions! :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good to see you Marina - Great comment :D

I didn't know the term 'doggies' - that makes so much more sense now. For me, this song is all about Jack - it is interesting how we can approach this song from opposite perspectives and find the struggle of Jack and Ennis in it. Shows what an incredible song it is - full of heart.

Anonymous said...

marina, rufus did say "to Jake", not "Jack" so your interpretation holds just fine, it seems to me.
Rufus is surely as befuddled as the rest of us. :)

Ruby said...

He may have just dedicated The Maker Makes to Jake because it's a BBM song.

I read somewhere (and wish I hadn't because it then made me cry whenever I heard the song), that TMM was about a man who found his homosexuality in conflict with his religious beliefs so he gave up his lover because he thought that would be what God wanted. Or something along those lines. Too sad a prospect for me to contemplate.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That is so sad Ruby - I admire Rufus so much for the way he can turn that raw emotion into lyrics and beautiful melody.

Anonymous said...

Really enjoying all your comments about The Maker Makes:)

I never understood the meaning of "little doggies", so thanks for explaining that, Marina. This blog is so educational for me!
I always thought of TMM as Jack's song. Jack always trying to get closer to Ennis but Ennis keeping him at arm's length, Jack faking smiles for everyone around him, but longing for a smile from Ennis to make him smile for real (always makes me think of the scene where Jack's waiting for Ennis by the fire and the way his face lights up when Ennis finally arrives and gets out of the truck and they both have the most beautiful smiles for each other).

Ruby, that is a very sad interpretation. What sort of loving God would want his followers to deny themselves love? And I know what you mean about "One", it's very personal to me too. There's a very tenuous link to BBM (or at least it's subject matter) with "One", in that apparently Bono wrote it as a deathbed conversation between a gay man dying of Aids and his father, who'd never been able to accept his son's homosexuality :( Oh dear. Someone please pass the tissues. And the chocolate...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Twisted Logic - Thanks for that - I had no idea about that background to 'One' - that's just terrible!

I'm learning so uch from this site too - noone stop talking.

And there's another sad image - Jack faking smiles while waiting for his lover's true smile. Oh lord, now I need chocolate!

Anonymous said...

Oh Ruby that is just so sad, isn't it? I always like to think when people are given the gift of love, it is from God or the Creator, or whatever people believe in, no matter who it is they are in love with. I think we are the ones who mess it up. I remember coming away from Brokeback thinking how wrong it is that two people cannot be together and be happy, without getting those kinds of negative messages from society. It's very upsetting, isn't it? Jack was so beautiful and heroic to me in that film, and Ennis just tore my heart out. I'll be fine; it's just that The Maker Makes just about does me in whenever I hear it! :)

WDW, if it makes you feel any better, I think the father and son came to a kind of understanding in the end, albeit when it was all but too late. The song was used as the official World Aids Day song for that year, and the proceeds from the track went to Aids charities. The video with the buffalo was directed by David Wojnarowicz, an artist friend of Bono's who "created controversy through his uncompromising depiction of (his) homosexuality, his infection by the HIV virus and the political crisis surrounding Aids". I'm not sure if he was the man the song was about though, or even if it was just a fictional man based on him. I wish I could find the interview where Bono talks about it, but I have so many magazines and books about U2 it would take me forever to find it!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Twisted Logic - I had no idea about any of that - and it makes me respect Bono even more. I'm glad that really then the song is positive about ow we can come together and be one family, one partnership, one love.

I definitely feel a little melancholy this evening and very reflective, especially thinking how songs such as TMM and One can tell stories in our own lives - the gift that some writers have - unbelievable. And it makes me feel sad again for Jack - maybe I need more fanfic! :D

And Marina - that's a beautiful comment.

I was just about to go bed, but for some reason I felt compelled to do a google search on David Wojnarowicz, the artist I mentioned in my earlier post about "One". Anyway, imagine my surprise to find that one of his pieces features a cowboy riding a bull! so I just had to post it. Sorry to be so off-topic, I'll shut up now!

I missed all the fun again, though I tried to get over here; my computer slowed to a snails pace yesterday and today...traffic jam maybe. Anyway, I was at iheartjake yesterday, saw the jake/ruf video, stole it with a smile on my face, posted it on Lashers, played it 1000 times, saw Incognito's post to come on over and to listen and post about it, tried to come over, but my computer said NO WAY:(
I hate missing anything, t at least I can read all the responses.
I fell in love with Rufus a few years ago, when I heard one of his songs, Poses, played on a Queer as Folk episodes. I was a QAF freak for a while. I love another of his songs, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk, in which he explains, that all the things he likes, are a little bit dangerous for him.
His dad Loudon and I are contemporaries too, ouch; sass behave:)
I hope I can get this computer fixed real soon; I want to play with everyone here and have loads of fun too!

Hi Sass - It's good to see you. Sorry about your computer troubles, that's a real shame. But I'm glad it didn't stop you enjoying the fabulous Rufus/Jake video!

I'm a fan of the Poses album too. Rufus seems to have done so many songs for TV and film - it's incredible. I hear about new ones all the time.

So yes, get your computer fixed and come out to play :D

All these comments just made me cry. I am able to relate to the perspectives of each one of you here. Life is a kaleidoscope and there are different situations in each of our lives that uncover a new facet of ourselves and the setup around us.
Long ago I had mentioned somewhere about my part-Jack part-Ennis self image.

I always felt that the love of my life, who sadly didn't want my love, was an Ennis locked up inside a Jack. There were some really deceptive externals. And he ended up stuffing my "Jack" down my Ennis "throat" and locking him/her up. A strange way to express it perhaps, but I'm able to do no better. I haven't really articulated it anywhere else before like this. It's as if Jake "came in" stealthily having found the key to those locks, which had fallen across his path somehow, and released my "Jack" from his closet where he was alive and almost choking to death. Jake came in and I "came out". I discovered all the rest and I'm here and there and everywhere because of this happy chance "encounter" with an amazing face and amazing grace.

I'll not forget telling one of my earliest Brokie friends who drew my story out gently, "This Jack is not dead". Those were my first words and then it all came out.

I hope this post was not too personal.

Kim said...

Incognita, I did not think that post was too personal--I thought it was a wonderful way of expressing the very complicated dynamics of our feelings about Jack, and Jake. We've all come to our connection with Jake by various routes, I imagine, but yours is not really too different from mine. I think Jake does release us.

I've been reflecting on "The Maker Makes" and wonder if the chains might be the chains imposed by our cultures as well as by our individual selves. When we try to break free, our societies snap those chains back around us. Release is difficult. I think that's why Jake has touched so many lives. He's found one of the keys to unlock the locks.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Incognita - thanks for sharing that with us. I imagine it was hard. As Kim says, many of us made our profound connections to BBM because of very similar experiences. I know I did. Mine is comparable to your's. And the role of Jake - and Jack - in this process of painful discovery and then hopefully cure, could well be something many of us share.

I know that one led me to the other and then I discovered that it may actually have been the reverse. It's complicated and I think that's why it's been such an ongoing journey for many of us - because it's helped us express some of the most important themes of our lives. No wonder Jake's become a big part of that.

As you say Kim - it is very possible Jake has held the key to a lot of this.

I'm aware I'm not making much sense so I'll shush :D

Kim said...

Oh yes WDW you are making sense!

I sometimes wonder if Jake himself is aware of the complex responses his role as Jack has released. He is so young. Yet he seems to have an old wisdom. So maybe he knows.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Kim - I'm glad you can understand what I'm trying to say. This film really does provoke the most complex and profound thought. And what is wonderful - we seem to all understand each other.

I feel that Jake experienced something of this during the filming and it made him think long and hard about himself - young thing as he was/is. Maybe this film helped to give him that 'old beyond his years' maturity that we all admire so much. Yet it is also so good to see him having fun and being his age :D
