Jake - from boy to man

Today, I've been thinking about the painful night that was the 78th Academy Awards, prompted by two new photographs of Jake's rehearsal for the event which can be found at IHeartJake. In the closing weeks of 2005, speculation mounted that Jake Gyllenhaal was not only in with a possible chance for his portrayal of Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain, but also for his Anthony Swofford in Jarhead. As we all know, Jake received the nomination for Jack Twist - and I think we can all remember how it turned out.

We can speculate about the extent to which this was a disappointment to Jake, especially when that night is contrasted to the obvious joy that Jake felt at the BAFTAs when the vote did go his way. However, Jake suggested in an interview at the close of 2005, that an Oscar buzz is an inevitable consequence of working with directors such as Ang Lee and Sam Mendes, indicating a philosophical attitude he may have needed. "There's a lot of talk about things like that when you're working with a director like Ang Lee or when you're working with Sam Mendes because they are inevitably two Oscar winning directors, so it's inevitable that people attach those things to those projects. For me I feel like all that I have as an actor is the process., Peter said something to me after we finished the movie: it's a very odd profession, a profession where you give a performance and then a year later people commend you on the performance but it's really odd to separate yourself from that because it's so far from what you've done."

"All I can speak of is the process and in that both Sam and Ang have changed my life regardless of the result of any of these films, I'm so happy with the response that has happened with Brokeback Mountain so far, just so far, and we're just sort of beginning how people are responding to this movie but to me the processes of both movies have changed my life and that's what I take away with me and everything else is just fun, and it's a laugh kind of sometimes and it feeds the ego."

Elsewhere Jake discusses the transformation that he went during the filming of Jarhead, during which time Sam Mendes said Jake went from boy to man. "Well the main difference is I started the movie with no hair on my body and then I seem to get hair all over my body. With Sam it was like we went through a pretty, I wouldn't say rigorous but it was a long process of him casting me. It wasn't really like rigorous necessarily but at least in my mind, you know I went through a lot of things and I really wanted to do the part from the beginning, so I was into it, and along the way, thought at times I wasn't going to get it."

"So for me, he put me through a long process and by the time he cast me I think he was pretty sure he wanted me to play the part. And in wanting me to play the part, I think he accepted that he wanted me, like for me and for the things I had inside of me, in me and he saw that there were things that probably other people, other directors hadn't seen before and he wanted to push. So I feel that's part of what being or becoming a man is, you know, in knowing that the choices that you make you have a good enough conscious time to do that, what ever you do will be alright."

So, if it hadn't have been for Sam Mendes and Jarhead, we would have a Jake without body hair. For that alone, Sam deserved a Oscar.

Interestingly, elsewhere in the interview, Jake says he's reading Joan Didion's The Year Of Magical Thinking, and listening to Kanye West and Jamie Foxx. [Thanks very much to a friend for the correction on this book title - that makes much more sense!]

Agent Provocateur

On 1 September, Maggie Gyllenhaal steps into the shoes (although perhaps shoes are not the most apposite item of dress here) as model for Agent Provocateur's lingerie. This is great news as it signals a move away from the ridiculously skinny and ethereal to the sexy and intelligent.

Includes pictures from IHJ.

Was Jake speaking metaphically of growing body hair while working on Jarhead? Seems to me in earlier erotic pix his his lovely body hair was a special feature.

Perhaps this is simply TMI for poor pining pia.

Poor pining pia I thought that talk of growing body hair would cheer any poor piners - I'm sorry it reminded you of what is absent... *)

It's true enough that body hair seemed in abundance in some early shots and in Jarhead it appears positively lacking (including on the top of Jake's head). Of course, afterwards (see MV pics!) it burst forth again. Exercise, diet, rage, who knows the reasons?

I hope you rally soon, pia, Rendition is getting closer :D

I guess Im in sorry shape -

But come on WDW - have we no boundaries? Maggie and Jake in their undies is gonna make me feel better? I dont think so!

I'm sorry positively pining pia - for once I'm without words :(

WDW, I'm sure this post is as interesting and insightful as always, but I'm afraid I lost all my powers of concentration at the mere mention of Jake's body hair! I think he must have shaved or waxed his chest at the beginning of the Jarhead shoot cos although he does have some hair on his chest in Jarhead, it's nowhere near as much as in Brokeback. His lovely hairy chest is yet another reason why I love SNIT so much ;) I suppose it could be the lighting or something though. OMG! I'm freaking myself out here with my obsession with Jake's body hair. And last night's Rendition pic isn't helping!

Twistedlogic, I'm so glad Im not the only one who totally lost their concentration wbile reading today's WDW post!

This is a great post, WDW. I'm always amazed at just how well grounded and real Jake can be. I saw some of these 2005 Oscars rehearsal pics on IHJ and thought they were interesting. I love hearing his thoughts on Brokeback and Jarhead, and like to hear about what goes on behind the scenes at the award ceremonies, the making of a film, etc. Jake has a knack for making things look like "just a normal day at work", but we know it's a lot more than that! :)

I know Jake was speaking metaphorically, but he has grown from boy to man so beautifully; if Sam Mendes had anything to do with that, he has my undying gratitude! Jake to me is just about the sexiest man in HW, or at least my idea of beautiful manhood, and the chest hair is very erotic!

Yay for Maggie too, being a model for Agent Provocateur lingerie. She's just as natural and real as Jake is.

Hi positively pia! No worries :D That picture of Rendition Jake yesterday left me with all sorts of emotions, a big one of which was missing him. But hearing Jake talk about the physicality of Jarhead always makes me feel that little bit better ;D I also have a weakness for a hairy chest - sigh!

Twisted Logic - I swear I can feel the heat from here! Jake has to have done something to his chest hair during Jarhead because there was nothing to obscure the muscles, that's for sure.

SNIT was beautiful for many reasons and that was definitely one of them.

Hi Marina - I love to see Jake behind the scenes too, and talking about what life is like working in front of the camera. I suppose it makes him feel part of our world as well as this glamorous HW world.

You say it wonderfully, Marina, Jake has grown from boy to man beautifully and all hail Sam Mendes :D

Feeling happy and with some fine thoughts of Jake in my head, I'm off to bed :D What will tomorrow bring? Thanks so much to you all :D

Hi Pia:) I'm glad too that I'm not the only one who has an appreciation of Jake's chest hair.

I just watched the video of Jake's BAFTA triumph again, and judging by how happy and excited he was I'd say he probably was disappointed not to have won at the Oscars. I know that's not what motivates him but he's only human, so being nominated I think it's only natural that he would have hoped to win. And of course he SHOULD have won (I know I'm biased, but still...)
Having said that,it's clear from what he says about the process and what he took from it, as well as the response to BBM, that what's important to him is his craft not the glitz and glamour. Like Marina says,it shows him to be very grounded and that's one of the things I admire most about him. And I would put money on him winning an Oscar at some point. He certainly has the talent to win himself a sack full of them :)

Twisted Logic - This is what I thought too. Jake's joy an dpride in winning the Bafta was so unadulterated and pure that he must have been disappointed by the Oscars. I just hope that the long-lasting and heartfelt love that so many people feel for Brokeback - can anyone feel like that for Crash? - is a personal compensation. Jake shows time and again that he had countless rewards from Brokeback - and from Jarhead. Definitely well-grounded.

I agree with you all - I would put money on it too that he'll win an Oscar one day. I hope he knows just how much Brokeback Mountain meant to so many people. I haven't seen anything that moving in a long time.

Goodnight to our UK and European friends, and take care WDW and those of you who are experiencing heavy rains and flooding. We'll look forward to more wonderful posts! :*

I'm sure that's the case WDW. From what Jake has said in various interviews and on SNL,I think he's aware of how much Brokeback meant to so many people. He'll have our hearts and minds forever because of Jack Twist, long after everyone's forgotten about the Oscars:)
Anyway, I'm going to look at the Rendition pic for a while in the hope I'll have another Rendition Jake dream ;)
Good night for now everyone:)

Pleasant dreams, TwistedLogic. This time, if Jake shows up? Give him whatever he wants. ;) Sorry! ; lol

Hola WDW...it seems like, once again, I am in the minority...I like the cardigan and I like smooth Jakey...no scruff on the face and not too much other body hair either...that is why I liked SNIT...I know, from earlier pics of shirtless Jake, that he must have shaved for SNIT..he is fairly smooth there...and that is also why I am so thrilled with the Rendition pic..because whilst I do see some chest hair peeking out of the shirt...the boy's face is cleanly shaven...huzzah!!
You know I love this site so so much...keep it coming WDW!! Michele

When I read comments like those Jake made in these interviews, (thanks SO much WDW!) I cannot imagine Jake not being involved with making films! The entire filmmaking process, especially acting, but not limited to acting, seems hardwired into him. He seems very dedicated and very much absorbed by "the process." Jake is very creative and he has indicated he has many interests I am sure he will explore, but I think he is a dedicated performer foremost. And I am very grateful for it!!!

Psst...WDW....

Interestingly, elsewhere in the interview, Jake says he's reading Joan Didion's The Year Of Magical Thinking, and listening to Connie West and Jamie Foxx.

It's KANYE West. I believe you saw him at the Concert for Diana, yeah? Where he sang 'Gold Digger' (which is the song on which Jamie Foxx sings with him).

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everybody, thanks for the comments! I'm flying out of the door so I'll be back to chat later :D And the sun's shining!

Thanks Cyn -I'll change that when I get back. Btw, I wasn't at the Concert for Diana - I was at Live Earth (see previous posts). I'll have a listen out for that song - sounds intriguing and I love Jamie Foxx's voice :D

Hey WDW! That's great news that the sun is shining. I hope the flood waters recede fast. I haven't seen the sun all week here but luckily no heavy rain.

I read your thought-provoking post before leaving this morning for a hectic stint in RL. As usual it has opnened so many unexpected channels in my mind. I will be back after a lie-down and comment

Hi Marina - Jake will definitely win an Oscar one day - a shelf full :D

Thanks for the good wishes for the floods - parts of my village are flooded now and the river should reach its height tonight. It's scarey, frustrating, worrying, beautiful and awkward all at the same time. I think I should be OK but I'm thinking about those not so lucky.

Hey Twisted Logic He'll have our hearts and minds forever because of Jack Twist, long after everyone's forgotten about the Oscars:) Oh most certainly and Jake must be well aware of that, that some judges matter more than the acadaemy, ie audiences.

And I agre with Marina, should you dream of Rendition Jake again - give him the cartridge!

Michele - cleanly shaven Jake is scrumptious that's for sure, but I do like some body fur - not too much, just the Jake amount ;D

hi Bobbyanna - I agree with you that Jake is a dedicated performer above all else - that he does think long and hard about the processes of making a film in order to give his best and take something from each role. I to think he is creative. I can't see him turning his back on this for good - it seems too important a part of him.

Good to see you Incognita and thanks. Hopefully, the floods will startt to go down in the next day or two....

WDW, my prayers and good thoughts are with all of you who are facing all these difficulties from the flooding.

Thanks Beckela, and mine too. It looks tonight that no more houses are going to flood in my village so I'm definitely one of the lucky ones.

O WDW, I hope you and your village
come safetly through this flooding.
But you say, in the midst of worrying that it is also "beautiful" - as storms are.
So I cannot help but notice that wet dark and wild is your name -
keep us posted and keep safe.

Excerpt from the article “The young Hollywood ten most talented actors – do they really have a future?” by David Thomson – ‘Hollywood life’ Magazine – issue summer 2007

“Not that people seem worried about Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s still 26. He’s from Los Angeles and a showbiz/artistic family. But his feet are on the ground and Gyllenhaal has a nice, lazy assurance about revealing himself slowly. From ‘Donnie Darko’ onwards, he seems to take pleasure in hiding or withholding himself. ‘The day after tomorrow’ was a big, silly picture that washed over his calm. ‘Brokeback Mountain’ was a breakthrough, yet one that left us nicely uncertain about his sexual inclinations (and if Hollywood is a very gay place, the US is still scared of that liberty). ‘Jarhead’ was a pretty good team picture in which Gyllenhaal could be seen teaching audiences to see through his eyes. And ‘Zodiac’ was an odd, unexpected thriller in which he slowly established his oddness. Put it all together and the result is a genuine actor who keeps to himself and believes in choosing very carefully.”

Love the way you have tossed those words together so effortlessly. It sums the whole situation up.

It's 2:30 am here and it's - yes - Wet Dark and Wild outside. The stormy and chilly wind are not letting me sleep. So I've crawled into my favourite pub for some warmth and company

Hi pia - thanks. It's strange because the weather has been beautiful today and people have been commenting today on the beauty of the flooded landscape in the sunshine.

Anon Interesting extract - thanks for that. It's certainly difficult to fault Jake's choices or doubt the care that's gone into making them.

Greetings Incognita - weather over there too, eh? Stay dry and safe :D
