Jake can afford to be picky - he's like a fine wine

I suppose if you've been on Mars this week - or commuting more than Jack Twist's four hours a day but on a bus not a horse - then you may not realise that the Bourne Ultimatum has been packing out the cinemas in the US and is about to open in the UK. The first thing to note about this is that the film comes with the possibility of a Rendition trailer - some have seen it, others have not, and who knows if it will accompany the movie to this side of the pond. The second thing of note is that this film, the final in the trilogy, has put Matt Damon in the news as the most bankable star in Hollywood - not the most popular and not the highest paid - just the most cost-effective.

In other words, a studio gets more for its money for Matt Damon than it does with Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise. This also suggests Matt is a safe bet. If I were Matt or his rep I don't think I'd really know how to take this. I might put my rates up. But it also sums up what I think about Matt Damon and his acting - he's undoubtedly a good actor and he's been in some excellent films but I would argue that that's about it. He's dependable and you can usually rely on the film being good (although I can think of some exceptions), but does he have that special, indefinable, stellar like quality that you can find in other actors - let's pick a name at random here... how about Jake Gyllenhaal?

Jake Gyllenhaal and Matt Damon share some patterns in their career - they have both carefully selected their roles and not made the obvious choices. Like Matt, Jake has opted for movies with a lower budget, even taking a paycut - as with Rendition - when he thinks the project merits it. Brokeback Mountain was another relatively inexpensive film; Donnie Darko was made on peanuts. The exception is The Day After Tomorrow which won Jake some much deserved attention, not least for his movie star appeal. Jake Gyllenhaal is not necessarily cost-effective, although I suspect he is for the right project, but he's more than reliable: he tests himself and tests us. I was very interested by this article in the Independent about Matt and the attributes that make a star bankable. Personally, I've never been a fan of Matt Damon because he lacks a certain quality that I find in abundance in Jake, but it is fascinating to compare their careers, with Matt that bit further on and experienced.

This coincides with another feature doing the rounds on the net that studios are desperately trying to sign up the few available stars before a potential writers strike. It seems Jake is one of the few that's available - at least as far as we know. Not all actors are keen to resume work so soon after completing a project - Matt Damon included. Other actors reported to be taking time off include Johhny Depp, leaving Jake, Hugh Grant and Joaquin Phoenix as the available leading men.

Jake himself said in an interview with Backstage, soon after the completion of Brokeback Mountain, that he was concerned about over-exposure, very aware that he was in four films in quick succession: "I didn't mean to be doing this many movies, and I didn't mean for them all to come out at the same time... I'm actually very picky about the work that I choose, and I really feel strongly about it when I end up doing it... When you have John Madden and Ang Lee and Sam Mendes and David Fincher ask you to be in their movies and the movies are good and the parts are amazing, you just can't say no." These circumstances just don't happen very often.

Incidentally, in this same interview, Jake also reflects on that moustache of Jack Twist's - the first time I've heard Jake discuss it! "I spent the entire second half of the movie trying to pull off that mustache, literally and figuratively" - should have tried harder, Jake. That's all I can say on the topic.

Jake and fine wine...

As most of you will know, I am a little partial to the heady combination of Jake Gyllenhaal, a fruity red wine and Dairy Milk. This August, Somerset House in London iselbrating Film 4's summer films. To mark its sponsorship of the event, Campo Viejo carried out a survey among Brits to discover which stars they felt were like mature wines. Jake made the list, which is actually quite surprising, because Jake is no maturing wine - unlike the winners of the male and female polls, George Clooney and Helen Mirren. But Jake did get a full 21% of the vote for the men (Kirsten Dunst coincidentally got 21% of the vote for the female stars). I like to see Jake featured so highly in British polls because it just shows he's on our minds - demonstrating to one and all just how bankable he is.

I think Matt Damon is a very talented actor - Good Will Hunting, I think that was a bit of a weeper for me, and I was so impressed that he and Ben Afleck wrote the screenplay. I really, really liked The Talented Mr. Ripley, he was edgy and scary. The Bourne films are fun, and The Departed was wonderful. Plus he's another homeboy made good! He and Mark W. know how to get a Boston accent down (even tho we're just a little bit unhappy with MW lately about his Brokeback comments). Matt Damon is one of my favorite actors. Then one day, I saw Brokeback Mountain, and Jake . . . and I haven't been the same! He kinda rocked my world. :) I know Rendition is gonna be great, and I don't think he has to worry about his future in films! :)

Love the thought of Jake as a fine wine, and he is so fine. He's like a fine Bordeaux - from a great vintage (1980) enjoyable now and also showing great potential, and will be oh-so-good years from now with maturity! :)

Hi Marina - thanks for the comment. I rfealise I was sticking my head out saying that I'm not a big fan of Matt Dammon but I know I'm more than made up for by everyone else. I am going to see this Bourne film even though I've not seen the others as I've heard so much that's good about it. When I love an actor sometimes I don't know why, there has to be that certain factor, and with me and Matt Damon it's just missing. Until I fell for Jake, the only actor I quite liked was Colin Farrell but it was nothing like this.

I'm not worried about Jake's future either ;D

At the moment Jake is like a young Californian Merlot - in a few years he'll be a rich Australian Shiraz!

I'm watching Zodiac tonight :D

Anonymous said...

Oh Yum, I could go for those too! He is more like a California wine, you are right. A Chateau Margaux, A great California Merlot, or an Australian Shiraz.... (sheesh, two wine tasing classes and she thinks she's an expert lol!) Well, maybe Heath should be the Australian Shiraz? I was a Ralph Fiennes fan before Jake - The English Patien *sigh*. And his version of Wuthering Heights with Juliette Binoche - To.Die.For. Very passionate and romantic. I read his lips described as "looking as if they could breathe life into concrete!" But as I said, then came Brokeback and Jack Twist. Enjoy Zodiac tonight! :)

Hey Marina! - (Ruffalo's looking a little harrassed right now...)

I'm drinking a Californian Merlot right now and each sip is reminding me of my favourite Californian man!

Oh, The English Patient - that film messed me up completely when I first saw it. I know we were talking about weepy movies last night, but the English Patient just hurt! I saw it the once and I don't think I could do it again, even though it had Kevin Whateley in it whom I love from Inspector Morse :D I saw Juliette Binoche at the Zodiac premiere in Cannes - she was very beautiful. For me, Wuthering Heights in the movies will also be Olivier. I've not seen Fiennes' version.

Oh lucky you, a great glass of wine, and Jake. He's my favorite West Coast/East Coast man, that's for sure! He's my second favorite CA man, my hubby is from CA. ;)And lucky, lucky you for being at Cannes. The English Patient was just beautiful in every way. I just loved the cinematography, among other things about it. I loved the character of Kip too. I should probably rent it, as I've forgotten quite a bit of it. Enjoy!

Thaks Marina - I am enjoying Zodiac and my wine (and chocolate) but almost time for bed for me - another long day begins in a few hours. Good for you for being able to see The English patient again - I'm just not able, wow that film hurt! I think the difference between BBM and The English patient is that BBM hurt but it taught me about love and I found love in it, whereas The English Patient showed me the death of love and there was no hope in it. BBM just connected to something in me. Thanks :D

Have to say. I am a huge Matt Damon fan. Started with School Ties.He played a spoiled rotten little creep at a prep school for rich kids. A young Brendan Fraser was the star. LOL!
Can't think of a Matt Damon film I haven't seen. I'm glad Jake is pacing himself with his work to avoid over-exposure...but would someone tell him that it's OK to do like two films a year??? Admittedly, I was spoiled by so much Jake: Donnie Darko, Moonlight Mile, TDAT, Proof, Jarhead, BBM. But frankly, these lulls in between are killing me!!!! Yo, Jake! We need to find a happy medium. And I don't think your fans will ever have enough of you you exposing yourself...that didn't come out the way I meant...I think I will retire now.

The last time I had an honest to God crush on an actor was when I was 18. I had followed this man's career since I was 12 but I figured it was time to grow up so I quit him cold turkey. I had many wonderful scrapbooks that I destroyed because I didn't want anyone to know how much he meant to me. Today, thirty years later, I regret not saving those scrapbooks. I still have a soft spot for this actor even though he is nearly 80 years old now. But he was the first man that I fell for...

And now there is Jake! This guy has kicked all rational, mature thoughts straight out of my head. It can't even be classified as a crush. I am enthralled, enraptured, in LOVE with Jake from his glorious talent, to his delicious beauty, to his magnetic personality. I may not know much about fine wine but I DO know a fine man when I see him. And that's Jake all the way around. This is it. I am done. There won't be another that can personify what Jake has.

Oh, and that actor I loved when I was 12-18 was Clint Eastwood. He was the exact amount of years older than me as I am of Jake!

Anonymous said...

Dani I love that post. How I wish you hadn't destroyed that scrapbook.

I've had lots of crushes along the way possibly from age 10 onwards. But two of these stand out as not being crushes at all but something deep and enduring. The first was Dustin Hoffman whose 70th birthday is today. The second we all know. I think these are "loves that will never grow old" though they wil alter and evolve perhaps into something deeper and more beautiful.

Talking of Dustin Hoffman, our very own Positively Pia has posted a gem of a Birthday Tribute to him(scroll down the page for it) ... the same kind of personal feeling that I talk about.

And yes to come to Matt Damon I too find him very talented based on the one film I've seen him in - Syriana.

And to come back to Jake - he has his place reserved in my heart and I don't bring him into the picture at all when I evaluate the talents of actors.

Anonymous said...

I forgot about Matt Damon in Syriana I enjoyed him in that, and he was wonderful in The Good Shepherd too.

I agree, Incognita, I may comment about actors I enjoy, favorite roles, but Jake is in a class by himself, and has a special place in my heart too, since Brokeback. I can't even really remember any actor I've had a crush on before, really. I mentioned Ralph Fiennes, and I've always liked George Clooney, but it was never like this. Jake has totally erased my memory banks, like a magnet or something! But I'm not complaining, I enjoy him and his films immensely!

OK, I mean it this time, goodnite all! :)

WDW see what you do to us? You make us say "Goodnight" over a four hour period.... we never really want to go! LOL you guys make me want to hit the hay now when I should be heading onto work!

Talk of magnets ... not only Jake but WDW also acts like one.

Special XOXOXOXO from me!

Morning friends! Sorry I missed you last night - time zones, gotta hate them :D

I'm glad Matt got some support here last night to offset my irrational apathy for the man.

Bobbyanna - couldn't agree more. I'm definitely ready for some Jake exposure right now ;D Next time any of us see him, we certainly have to give him a polite nudge :D

Dani - what a wonderful post - a real declaration of love for Jake and I think you speak for many of us there. The closest I've ever been to this before was with the Beatles but that was entirely different and in fact too different to compare. Never with an actor. I am a Colin Farrell appreciator though :D It's the Irish rogue in him I think.

Hi Incognita - thank you for talking to us about the loves that never grow old. Jake is in fine company there with Dustin whom we know Jake admires.

I'm sorry I missed you *)

Marina - Jake has erased my memory banks too and I'm a willing accomplice. We're very lucky - now, if only he would choose that next project - and tell us about it :D

I'm soooo with you all here. A fine wine, indeed! There are many fine actors around the world, young and "mature," and I do enjoy them and their work, but Jake is THE actor that totally owns my mind and heart with just a barely discernible change of expression on that unique, beautiful face of his. And I've never seen anyone's eyes light up quite like his when he smiles. Sigh!

No wonder my friends think I'm nuts.

By the way, that picture of Jake with George is one of my all time faves. Incognita once said they look like they are from the same tribe there. Love that! I do wish those two would do a film together.

"Heady" posts - I feel a song coming on!

You go to my head and you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning 'round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head like a sip of sparkling Burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two
etcetcetec

AND THAT'S THE TRUTH

Pia -- perfect!

Just want to echo what everyone else is saying:There's Jake. Then there's everyone else. There is no one like him. And like Dani and pia and the rest of you, I've stopped questioning myself as to why I am enthralled. Why I can just look at his photos and study his expressions for ....ever! A good part of his beauty is the warmth, the kindness, the intelligence and the emotional accesibility he projects. And it's all very honest, not put on. I hope, as he grows older and experiences more of life, he doesn't lose those qualities.
I can gush about Johnny Depp, Clooney (Love him!) Brad Pitt, DeNiro, Pacino, etc. But as you say, Jake is in a class all by himself. TOtally.

"And like Dani and pia and the rest of you, I've stopped questioning myself as to why I am enthralled"

From the first moment that he "grabbed" me I went headlong into it very willingly. Never questioned anything. RL people think I've become "reclusive"
Probably think I'm into some religious cult or writing my thesis on some esoteric subject matter --- so be it!

A question WDW - are we supposed to go to previous discussions to keep "on topic"? Do people read back discussions?

Wanted to report that I forwarded
the USC newsletter quote to Marijane Meaker who said she hadn't heard this, and was very pleased, as the Fox people "are always plugging away to get this story produced."

And I was assuming Naomi and Marijane were both in constant communication (having been aware they were friends) and oh, yeah, and of course, Jake, too, involved hahaha, although it doesnt sound like there's a part for him.

How little I know about the film business!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

hi all! Texting on bus - had to say please chat away pia, there's no such thing as off topic here! Back soon - I hope!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone - made it back at long last - phew. But I'm glad to report I'm fully stocked on wine and Dairy Milk so the evening should go well from here on, what's left of it... ;D

Beckela - Jake is THE actor that totally owns my mind and heart with just a barely discernible change of expression on that unique, beautiful face of his. And I've never seen anyone's eyes light up quite like his when he smiles. - How I love this :D And I know he lights up my eyes too whenever I see him anywhere.

RL friends have to put up with us. I'm afraid I'm so out of the Jake closet that I have no distinction between RL and Jake friends - all know I love Jake and I suspect that some of my 'RL' friends visit WDW - hmmm. And my dad - hi! Oh yes, they do think I'm nuts ;D My mum even asks me how Jake is when I call her now. Then she asks me how Mr WDW is. I'm rambling on as usual... where was I?

Pia - you are wonderful, you know that? I love the song. And I love that you chatted with Marijane about the story. I really hope it all goes ahead as it sounds like it would be a pleasure for your friend and a good project for Naomi. Go on Fox.

Hi Bobbyanna - it's probably best not to question it and just keep falling headlong, trusting on the safe, soft landing. I love to talk about other actors, although I suspect that I'm interested in comparatively few, but it all comes back to Jake.

Incognita hi! The cult of Jake! And yet I think Jake has actually put my feet on the ground and put me back on the right path. Since Jake I have thrown myself into experiences in a way I'd never done before. And I met all of you! Fab.

Thanks for your comments :D

Are you around WDW? Hi from me!
The mozzies were having a feast off me and serenading me to boot, so I woke up and came here. I'm reminded of the interview where they go for Jake and feast off his blood!

You said it about Jake getting us centered and focussed. I feel much happier, better and able to handle my life. And I so sense myself as being on a good and promising path. I think I've learnt to embrace risks thanks to him. Amen to the "Cult" of Jake!

Anonymous said...

incognita, I love Jake to pieces, too and he certainly is an inspirtion, but give credit to yourself, too, bcz you are a pretty special person. Maybe it's the synergy...like all these forces converging! LOL!

Anonymous said...

A few things.

Speaking of "crushes" and hoping for a soft landing. You know, one of the reasons I feel this is diff'rent, for me, at least, is that I took his drag act on SNL pretty seriously as a pledge to his "fan base" - Im not going away - and Im gonne love you. Maybe this is nuts, but I do believe he will be faithful to - both crowd and camera? -

Also, the song (Im glad you love it too Beckela and WDW) You Go To My Head reminds me of course of Sinatra, and the girls that screamed "Ooooooh Frankie". And so of Beatles, Elvis - and even a sorta distinguished middle aged lawyer I know who is crazy for Bruce Springstein and gets a front row seat at his concerts so he will be sprayed with perspirtion, aka "Bruce juice;"

But Jake, in my (admittedly dazzled) view is the real package, loved by men and women of all ages,
and apparently enjoying every, well almost, every minute of it.

p.s. and loving us back.

Aww Bobbyanna -- we are all special people aren't we? Each of us has that magic one to one link with Jake and with one another as well as a collective sense of belonging together.
Great to be online at this odd hour(3 am for me) and meet up with friends.
Hey Pia just saw your post ... you are right about the SNL words ... how revealing. Would be you to come up with an unusual insight.

Pia, that was beautiful, and I agree. I loved his SNL performance, and I took it to mean he loved his "unique" fanbase too, of which I am proud to be part of! As I said before, I can't remember any other actor that I've had such a crush on, who? Huh? Wha? and I hope I never land!

I am telling you I'm not goin', and You, and You and You, you're gonna love me, yes you are"

Well, Jake, we do love you and we will love you and when others discover your talent, they'll love you too! I love that little "gasp" of breath he takes during the "you're gonna loooooooooooooove me" part! :)

YAY WDW! We are around and I've caught your new post too. I need some chocolate now.

Hey Marina -- I guess it's evening for you?

Those lines from SNL are suddenly meaning all the more to me. And no! **Deep Breath** No Landing ---- it's a forever flight.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Right then...

Get Real Great to see you as always - you've put a smile on my face for saying you get a smile on your face here, so thanks for that :D

Hi Incognita! I'm sorry I missed you in the middle of your night. Also sorry to hear about the mosquitos. Thanks for coming here. I think, as you say, we all have much to be grateful to Jake for but also to each other.

Hi Positively pia - I think Jake's SNL was his celebration of the fandom and it was sincere. I think he really did want to give something back. And here we all are, still here, still loving BBM but also very happy to love whatever other film Jake gives us. I think that was an incredible thing to do. I'm sure he took some teasing for it but he must have thought it worth it. Quite a few of my non-Jake friends loved it too.

But 'Bruce Juice'.... ugh?! 'Jake Juice' sounds better ;D

Hey Marina - you brought the SNL song right into my head there, with those gasps and pauses. Jake is a master of timing, even in song, even in falsetto. I'm definitely proud to be a part of that unique fan base along with you all :D

I hope someone's still around to chat - I've finished all my jobs and have a little time before it all begins again... here or in the new thread I suppose. Everything just carries on - it doesn't matter on which post :)

Incognita - I caught you! I'd better pour some wine...
