Jake - I wanted to see something else and not be the boy in the bubble

The good news is that I actually managed to see my way all the way through the Rendition press conference without it juddering and stalling. So I feel safer posting the link. It worked for me by letting it play a bit and then pausing it and resuming the action. It's well worth a watch and I'm pleased to say that I have now learned the name of the lovely actress Nineb Oukach, who, I think, had a strange time of it in Toronto, a little like Omar Metwally. These are unfamiliar actors being paraded around with their much more famous colleagues and sometimes it seemed like they may have felt left behind. This was almost literally true with Nineb as her car didn't show to pick her up from the press conference and she looked like she was trying to hitch a lift with another of the actors. Interesting that Peter forgot his passport!

There are other videos too - and I hope that these two play successfully on every type of PC and in every country. The first one is from Hello and contains an interesting discussion by Jake Gyllenhaal about the use of colours in Rendition - how, despite the bright colours of North Africa, Jake's character should be dressed in muted colours. The second video is from Entertainment Weekly, and I'm grateful to Nadine for the link. Don't be put off by the title 'Just a minute with George Clooney' - click on the video about the beginning of TIFF and, even though it has Brad Pitt's face on it, the video begins with Rendition. It includes more red carpet interviews with Jake and Reese and a new clip of Jake from the film. This isn't in the trailer - give yourself a treat and watch it, it's only very slightly spoilery and it contains one of my favourite lines from the film.

I was struck by two quotes from Jake today as I was looking through some links - one serious and one delightfully Jake. Jake tells Entertainment Weekly 'Like, people say about Rendition, ''You made a political movie.'' And I'm like, well, I didn't think about that. Like I told you, I wanted to see what it was like when I wasn't the guy in the truck watching the other guy walk away and being torn up. I wanted to be not torn up. I wanted to see what that would feel like. I didn't want to be the boy in the bubble. [Giggles] I wanted to see something else.' I love these references to Jake's earlier films and his awareness that with Rendition he's moving into new territory, but that he still feels the pain of Jack Twist's decision.

Jake is then asked: 'This is maybe the most grown-up role you've ever had to date. Was that also part of your thinking?' to which he replies, 'It's nice to deal with issues a little bit ahead of yourself, you know? Things you don't totally understand. To struggle with those things, yeah, it feels a little bit more mature.' It's also good to hear at the end that Jake is happy to now be an experienced hand at Toronto, to be part of the in crowd, to know some of the journalists and to be aware of what's going on around him.

The other quote - or anecdote really - is to do with Jake's music tastes - one of my favourite Jake subjects. E! Online informs us that Jake is a backpacker! 'Jake Gyllenhaal Is a Backpacker: Don't know what that means? It's a term used to describe die-hard hip-hop fans, and I call him that because he told me he is loving the new Talib Kweli album right now. Our interview for his latest film, Rendition (costarring Reese Witherspoon), got really intense because, let's face it, it's about a suspected terrorist who's detained and tortured. To lighten the mood, I asked Jake if he still had the Indigo Girls on his iPod, something he told me several years back. Didn't see that one coming, did ya!'

Finally today, I read this interesting article in the Toledo Blade about what TIFF is like for the media, running around to get their exclusives while missing what's under their nose, in this case Jake and Reese going into the Intercontinental, the fourth of TIFF's hotels where junkets and parties are held. 'Jake Gyllenhaal climbed from a black SUV and entered the hotel. The reporter, untangling his legs from the cables, didn't notice. But now the crowd did. Gyllenhaal walked without breaking stride through the lobby, entered a bank of elevators, moved to the back of the car, stepped out on the third floor, and passed three more entertainment reporters, who didn't notice him, either.' At the gala itself: 'About 500 people stood behind barricades and stood on the stone wall of a nearby church. Over and over, they shouted "Reeeeeeeese!" and "JAAAAAAKKKKE!" Flashes went off and off and off. For minutes at a time, they held their positions on tip toes, sank down to their heels, then rose back to tip toes, dipping and rising and dipping. A large teenage girl shouted at a police officer to step aside so she could take a picture. He ignored her until she yelled, "I'm going over," and began climbing the fence. "No you're not," he said. "Here I go," she yelled, then climbed down.'

I sympathise, I nearly strained a muscle trying to get a glimpse of Charlize Theron's head and Andre Benjamin. Sienna Miller had the right idea, she walked out of the front door of the Hazelton with a big hat on so hardly anyone recognised her and noone got injured.

Includes photos from IHJ.

Thanks for all these links WDW:) Really appreciate it! Have you managed to get any sleep at all since you got back? I really apreciate all the work you do here, but I hope it's not wearing you out too much.

That EW video is certainly a treat all right!! I totally see what you mean about Jake's new physicality and how he's grown up. He does look older, and meaner, and kinda dishevelled and...OMG!!! I don't know how I'm going to control myself when I see him like that on a big screen!!
Oh, and I LOL at that line:D (I'm assuming I'm thinking of the right one, don't want to say it in case it spoils anything!)

Hi Twisted Logic - yep, that's he line! It got a chuckle at the gala. Believe me, some of the shots of Jake in Rendition will have you in a zombie state for hours - I'm already looking forward to the DVD!

I'm definitely still on Toronto time in so many ways :\

great stuff WDW - so many goodies.
any idea why I cant get the sound on the videos? I liked the interview in Entertainment Weekly, but what does it mean "to get punk'd"?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Positively Pia sorry you can't get sound. I did have some trouble so I paused it and restarted it and it was ok.

As for 'punk'd' - I have absolutely no idea - does anyone?? :)

Anonymous said...

Hey WDw, I have a feeling that DVD is going to be rewound as many times as certtain scenes in BBM (and that's a lot of times, believe me!) I can't stop watching that EW clip! Also, I know this sounds really weird, even for me, but there's something about Jake swearing that makes me weak.

Pia, I'm guessing he's refering to the TV show Punk'd, where they set up celebrities and play pranks on them, kinda like Beadle's About here in the UK.
Bless Jake for even thinking that!!It makes me love him even more *sigh*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I know Twisted Logic - the movie's not even out yet and already I'm thinking DVD and the pause button. I know it's bad but I love to hear Jake swear - he doesn't do it often in Rendition but ehen he does... :P Very sexy.

I've never heard of that showm, but that'd explain a few things.

WDW, welcome back once again, and I too hope your catching up on your rest....don't work yourself too hard though. I too appreciate all the work and dedication you do here, but just don't spread yourself too thin. We will always be here, you can be sure!

Did other people from other parts of the country have a problem watching the Rendition press conference? So glad you were able to get to see it WDW, phew, that's a relief!

I only watched the press conference once a few days ago, but it was very interesting, and I found Gavin Hood said some very profound statements. It was also interesting to hear him say about them being aware of the very similar case here in Canada as well. Like you say, it must be difficult for not so well known actors like Omar Metwally, to feel as included because often the bigger actors would be given more attention. I'm sure though, they understand why that is. I watched a short video interview with Omar, and he mentioned how happy he was to hear all the big actors such as Jake, Reese, Meryl, and also mentioned how he was glad that he would be playing Reese's husband. I find Omar sort of resembles Canadian singer Leonard Cohen's son, Adam Cohen. Guess Peter forgot his passport....AND his socks, LOL! He's such a cutie.

Really great vids, and great to see a new clip of Jake especially. I agree, it is nice to hear Jake make reference to Jack Twist in the EW article. Jake always speaks with so much sensitivity when he speaks about Jack.

I think perhaps Jake got most of his TIFF experience and the "in's and out's" promoting BBM, cause I'm sure that was a whirlwind experience for him. Perhaps for Rendition, he felt the most comfortable and experienced at TIFF this time, and felt he truly belonged.

Can't say I was familiar with the term, "backpacker". I like the Indigo Girls as well.

I guess Jake and Reese are savy at moving quickly to try and elude the reporters. Using all their sprinting and stealth moves.

Yeah, supposedly I heard that Sienna left early from her own party premiering her fashion line. WDW, glad to hear that you didn't get hurt or sprain/break anything during your Jake hunt at the TIFF, LOL. Thanks for giving us such a great play by play on your experience at the TIFF. You do a great job here on WDW, and WDW is #1!

Thanks so much Jantoinette! I don't seem to have caused myself any damage this time - except to the heart, sigh :\

I think a few people have had problems with the press conference, I know I did for a day or two but I'm glad it's working now. I do hope it goes onto YouTube at some popint so I can save it. There were some interesting questions and Jake impressed me wth his maturity and thoughtfulness. I know I;d have a lot of trouble answering questions like that on the spot. And I thought Reese was lovely.

It's interesting that after the press conference Reese was rushed out of a different exit completely. I'd originally thought she'd arrived in the same SUV as Jake but when I look at the photos I can see it's the blonde aide. As is the case, they are very often confused! It was a shame she didn't leave out of the same exit as Jake as there were very few of us, compared to what it was like later on in the weekend when there when the crowds got so much bigger.

Omar was a BIG hit with all of us there. Very kind, humble and gentle. I saw him around a fair bit, just like the wonderful and handsome Kelly Sane.

That will explain Sienna and her hats!

Thanks for that, Jantoinette :)

I too heard (and read) about a certain line that got a chuckle at the gala. So, I think I know what your referring to....

Twistedlogic and WDW - I must shyly admit that I'm in agreement as well about feeling a tingle when Jake swears, LOL! Just don't tell my Mom....LOL

Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher hosted Punk'd. I'm not quite sure if it still airs or not (I don't get it anymore). It was quite funny the pranks he pulled on some really well known actors/actresses. Jake would be so great to get punk'd on his show, cause in Jake's own words, "he'd love that shit"!

Hey WDw! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who likes the swearing thing;D Btw, isn't Jarhead officially the film with the most swear words in the history of films or something?

Jantoinette, I skimmed the bit of your post where you talked about Rendition to avoid anything spoilerish (I'm too weak to resist spoilers about Jake's character but I'm desperately trying to ignore evrything else!) but your mention Leonard Cohen caught my eye. I inherited an appreciation of Leonard Cohen from my mum, but I didn't know he had a son who was a musician! Actually, I didn't know he had a son! I googled him and yeah he does look a bit like Omar (he's hot!!). I'm going to check his music out tomorrow, just wanted to say thanks for mentioning it :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Jantoinette - I think jake would be great! I wonder if he's a pactical joker...

I don't like swearing in any films but Jake's Twisted Logic - that must mean something ;)

Jake's Twisted Logic

Sorry for taking your words out of context WDW, but I couldn't resist;) Yes, I'm his forever!!! Must go and get some sleep now (if I can tear myself away from that clip...) xx

Hey,all!!I'm home! Home at my own tempramental computer! I've tried thru every single path I can think of, and cannot get the TIFF site that plays the news conference to work. Every single time the TIFF site come up, it simply cuts off. and I am no longer even on the internet. That's right. The thing shuts down my computer. I saw the other clips you referred us to WDW, but I cannot get the TIFF conference. I'm very sad. Hope it gets posted on YouTube. (IHJ TIFF and DCForum TIFF don't work either.) But also I'm tired. I drove the Queens Highway 401 from Toronto to the U.S. border and it was two lanes in either direction with at least five long construction zones and a huge amount of truck traffic. Then there was a 40 minute wait to get across the border. I have been reading all these lovely posts and don't really have much to add to WDW's wonderfully thorough account, except that he spoke to me. I was standing at the rope inside the theatre with WDW and a couple of other Jake folk and I was with WDW near the entrance to the tiny hallway leading to the elevator that would bring them to the stage. First, I spotted Chris who seemed to give all of us a shy smile as he rounded the corner and made his way to the elevator. It took me several seconds to process that it was Chris. WDW and I were equally flustered, I think. Then we waited. Another "significant nod" from the volunteer Ladies of the Rope. More people rounded the corner and passed us. Then a "really significant nod" and there was Jake with some other people.I had a chance,(thanks to my daughter) to see a special screening of Rendition early that morning. So I called his name. And he turned and looked right at me. And I said "I saw it this morning and I thought it was wonderful."
And he smiled and nodded and said, "Great. Thanks!" as he was wisked away! LOL!!!! So that was my teeensy Jake moment. (sigh.) WDW, I know what you mean about "heart problems." Oh. And I didn't even need my stillettos bcz no one misbehaved. Oh. and IMHO, Reese is just a little doll!!! Very pretty and sparkly and smiling. I don't recall ever seeing her so smiling and sparkly before.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Welcome home Bobbyanna! I'm glad you're back safe and sound, and please give my love to your lovely daughter :) I hope you'll be able to see the press conference soon - start it up again that might work. I had huge problems with it but now it's OK. It should be for you, too.

Thanks very much for telling us about your special moment with Jake. I'm just so glad I was there to experience it with you. And yes, when Chris came round that corner, so unexpectedly, it was a beautiful shock! He's so hot! Sorry, girlie moment there... As Jake walked by to the lift, he was just beautiful and all hail to the volunteer ladies for knowing what the moment meant to us.

Reese looked stunning, and so small, definitely. I thought she was wonderul. And Peter, and Omar, and Gavin and the rest. I love this cast and their director!

Good to speak to you again, Bobbyanna *)

Thank you, WDW, for more and more from Toronto. Love seeing the movie clip that's not in the trailer. :-) This "new Jake" looks mighty fine!

Oh, and a quick comment about yesterday's post - I put "The Spy Who Came In from the Cold" on the top of my Netflix queue. I like when Jake talks about his roles and how he goes about finding his character, so it should be interesting to compare that movie's character with Jake's, when "Rendition" comes out.

Bobbyanna, what a sweet encounter with Jake! Lucky you. I hope I get one someday. :-)

I had a similar problem with the press conference video. As soon as I clicked on the link, my Internet Explorer would shut down and then restart itself on my homepage. I read the notice that you need the Adobe Flash Player 9, and there is a link there to download it, but my IE would shut down anyway. So I had to go directly to www.adobe.com to download the player. Now I can watch it, but it stutters a LOT like so many others have said.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, neely. I will save downloading Adobe Flash Player until tomorrow. I think I will turn in very soon. Exhausting day. Lots of sweet memories. My encounter with Jake was so very brief and really fairly anonymous. But the thing is, he didn't even have to acknowledge me at all. It was a very hectic, rushed environment. And he did and I think he is just so cool for doing that. I mean it wasn't that it was me. It was that he'd be so kind to a fan.

Anonymous said...

He's a very thoughtful man. It's clear that he appreciates his fans, always ready with a smile or a wave and a greeting. I've read so many encounters from fans who have had a similar experience. I agree - he's very cool. :-)

Good luck with your computer tomorrow. Goodnight, and sweet Jake dreams. :-)

I loved that, I love Jake self-awareness in his professional path and his strong bond with the characters he once played...awww lovely Jake...

And Rendition Jake, well...Sorry for the dirty expression but, I really don't know how to express it otherwise : he makes me horny...*blush*.:)

I would say there is a good chance the press conference will make it on You Tube soon. IHJ will probably have the video too. I'll have to watch it again on the TIFF site. I agree, there were alot of interesting questions and so true, you really have to be quick on your feet to answer right on the spot. Jake never seems to have a problem, and always knows how to articulate so well.

Reese is on the cover of Elle magazine, and supposedly get a bit candid on her break up with Ryan I heard on one of the entertainment shows.

Now, Colin Farrell has quite the potty mouth which sometimes irks me. I wonder if he was swearless at his movies press conference at the TIFF, which I think was today. OH, and I'm Not There was premiering tonight too (12th), and I can't wait to watch that press conference!

Twistedlogic, I heard that too about Jarhead being the movie with I think the most F words/swear words.

WDW, I think Jake is the type that can easily laugh at himself and even makes fun of himself....so, he probably would get a kick out of getting punk'd. I can't say I've ever heard he was a pratcial joker too much I don't think.

Twistedlogic, even though I'm Canadian, I'm not what you would call a huge fan of Leonard Cohen, but I think he's a phenominal songwriter. My most favorite song of his is Hallelujah. Such a gorgeous song. Rufus Wainwright does a beautiful rendition of Hallelujah, check it out on youtube.

I've been a fan of Leonard's son Adam's music since he released his debut album in the late 90's, which is self titles which I have. If your interested, check out Adam Cohen's website and you'll hear some of his music. He speaks fluent french, and also has a french album....and yes, I agree, he is HOT! Do a search on youtube for Adam Cohen vids, and the first 2 that show up are from his late 90's album. The first song, Cry Ophelia he also done a french version. The second vid of him on youtube, must say, he looks pretty good laying on the car, LOL! Adam Cohen is also in an LA based band called Low Millions, and an interesting bit of info is that Adam's label he's with is the same label as Adam Levine from Maroon 5 (who just happen to go to the same high school as Jake!). The Low Millions also toured with Maroon 5. A few years ago, when Adam Cohen's forum on his website was more active, I had asked him a question and he answered me. He use to post himself on his forum.

Anyway, my apologies for going a bit off topic and for also being longwinded. Twistedlogic, let me know what you think of Adam Cohen's music, and your quite welcome!

Hey Bobbyanna!! Thank you for telling us about your moment with Jake- like you say, he didn't have to acknowledge you but it's wonderful that he did.It means a lot to know that he appreciates his fans. Those of us not lucky enough to have met him can feel appreciated by proxy! And to have that smile aimed straight at you...that would've made my year!!

Jantoinette, thanks for all the info about Adam Cohen:) I'm listening to some of his songs right now on his website and will check out the youtube vids later. I have to say, if I didn't know he was Leonard Cohen's son I would never have guessed.I wouldn't say I'm blown away by Adam but I do like what I've heard so far.I think it's the sort of music that needs time to grow on the listener.I wish my French wasn't so rusty! It was one of the few subjects I was half way good at at school, but I've forgotten most of it now (well it was a long time ago!:( I'll also check out Rufus W's Hallelujah, although Jeff Buckley's version will take some beating. My favourite Leonard Cohen song is Suzanne, by a country mile. Apparently as a baby I would stop crying as soon as my mum put it on and it's remained one of my favourite songs of all time to this day. I also love "Hey that's no way to say Goodbye", even more so since BBM cos the lyrics remind me of Jack's "eyes soft with sorrow" when they leave at the end of the summer, and when he's watching Ennis drive away after their final meeting :(
Oh, and the Maroon 5 connection - how weird/spooky/a-MAZE-ing is that?! It all comes back to Jake in the end, doesn't it? Speaking of which, I need to see him talking about pie charts again;D

Sorry about the long OT post.

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Thanks once again for burning the midnight oil after a really hard day to bring us this, another lovely post.

It sounds like Nineb had a raw deal all round at the TIFF,the guy at the Press Conference not bothering to learn how to pronounce her name, struggling against shyness and limited English to speak at the PC (Jake looked as if he really felt for her and was willing her to get the words out) and then she's left stranded outside. I think the publicists etc should have made more of an effort to give equal attention and consideration to the whole cast, regardless of "status".
Not that I think she'd have much trouble getting a lift, she is gorgeous!! Some gentlemen may prefer blondes ;-( ,but let's hear it for sultry brunettes (well I can do the brunette, sultry might be a bit more of a struggle)!

The "Hello" discussion about the use of colour was really interesting and I agreed with Jake's take on it being a good decision to ditch the idea of a phone call taking place between Douglas and Reese's character. One of the most powerful statements of the film must be the struggle of someone in the United States to comprehend what is happening to her husband at the hands of her own countrymen on a different continent, and the devastating affect someone's actions can have on the lives of people they have never met or might not even really consider. Interacting by not interacting as Jake put it so much more succinctly than I did!

I was happy to dig up the EW video for you,WDW,especially for the new glimpse it gave us of Jake's character. And add me to the list of those who get some peculiar thrill from hearing Jake effing and blinding (and as in "Jarhead" reeking of testosterone! Ye gods!).

I laughed out loud at Jake's joke that Meryl Streep wasn't on the end of his phone as he filmed that scene...but he was on the end of hers. Another sweet smidgeon of self-depracation,sort of "I know my place".

In choosing to do "Rendition" it seems Jake was partially motivated by the fact that it was something he'd never tackled before, a more mature role, the challenge of dealing with a subject he didn't fully understand. I felt there was a tacit inference there, which Jake might not have been making intentionally, that in previous roles,"Brokeback" in particular,he understood the subject all too well, because, like the rest of us,he knows all too well what it feels like to be "struggling with love" (as quoted at the 2006 MTV Movie awards where the success of "Brokeback" and "that kiss" winning an award seemed to really draw his emotions very close to the surface).

His reference to Jack being "torn up" really tugged on my heart-strings too. It's heart-warming to me that he,albeit from a different perspective, was as moved and eternally changed by that film as we all are.

I'm so pleased for Bobbyanna that she had that short but sweet exchange with Jake, but most of the time we are interacting without interacting and yet our lives are all the richer for it.

Nicely said, if I fully understand what you are saying, Nadine: that even such brief encounters sweeten our lives - Im pleased for you, also, Bobbyanna - and thrilled for all of you.

But then I also expect Great Things from you guys in the future in the realm of Jakedom.

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Yes,Pia,that's in part what I meant, but also that it is an enriching experience just to know of Jake and to follow his life and career from a distance.

Most of us will never get to meet him even briefly, let alone truly know Jake the private person as his friends and family do,yet he plays a life-affirming part in all our lives and has brought so many disparate people into contact with each other who would otherwise not have met, either virtually or for real.

And I'd like to think that we affect Jake's life for the better too,as hopefully he's to some degree aware of just how much admiration for his talent and love for him as a person (not to mention latent lust for his loveliness)there is "out here".
That's what I meant by stealing Jake's phrase "interacting without interacting".

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone - sorry I've missed you all - having a bit of a work crisis... But some wonderful, wonderful comments here. I'll be back in a few minutes but first I've some postin to do. :)

Now where did I put that beer...

Anonymous said...

Ah, Nadine, I see I did misunderstand you, somewhat, and didnt get the reference to Jake's comments on the film. A more profound thot, O Jake you rascal, and you, too, Nadine. Although I think it's true - even though we're on the phone to Jake and he's not actually on the other end of the wire, we are related in terms of - hah! where is Incognita when I need her? - in terms of karma? - (is "karma" plot?)

Okay I think Ive got it! :):)

"Latent lust for his loveliness"
WOW! as Jake would say. and so say I.

I love Leonard Cohen's songs, TL, thnk I'll play me some Leonard Cohen right now. Documentary about LC, "Im Your Man" is quite wonderful. Lots of Rufus Wainwright on this documentary.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Right, the wine's open aand I'm back :)

Neely - sorry about all the troubles you've had with the press conference. It's like that fr me sometimes but then fine when I restart it. I'm sure there are people out there trying to get this on YouTube so fingers crossed.

Xenia - thank you very much for such a kind comment *) And Rendition Jake has that affect on me too - Rendition Jake/Toronto Jake - just can't get enough of him.

Jantoinette - thanks for the great post - I do love to hear you talk about I'm Not There. Did Heath get over there I wonder. Ahh, Colin Farrll - my second favourite actor (although a million miles behind Jake). it would have been good to see him - instead I had to settle for Brad and Angelina! (Well, Brad's hand, top of his head, and the back of Angelina's head).

I think IHJ is having trouble getting the press conference onto YouTube but I know they're trying.

Thanks for all this Leonard and Adam Cohen chat. I do like it when the music coversations come up as you know :) Leonard is more Mr WDW's thing than mine. I've been listening to the best of Garbage album today for instance. I'll definitely check out Adam Cohen's band. I love Maroon 5 and should be seeing them soon.

Hey Twisted Logic - always love to hear my Spooky Twin talk music!

Nadine thanks for that great comment :) I think with Rendition, Jake is now realising that this is a whole new ballgame. This is another ensemble piece but Jake is the lead and it's a very serious, topical subject. I so want to know where this has led him career wise - I'm hoping for a big lead role in another memorable and mature film. We are going to be in for such a treat ;)

Positively Pia I love this even though we're on the phone to Jake and he's not actually on the other end of the wire, we are related - I love the connection you refer to.
